If you've never had good, fresh sushi this place may appeal to you and seem great. We travel for a living and are from florida and this sushi is BLAH. We spent $80 for LUNCH and would have rather been to Panera bread across the street. The tuna and snapper were so dry and chewy it looked like jerky on rice. Some of the rolls were decent but HUGE which makes for very difficult, and shall we say unattractive, eating. Ate at AKA for first time today. This is a small place, so be prepared for it being busy at lunch time. Service was very friendly and the sushi was excellent. We sat at the sushi bar and so it was fun to watch the sushi being made. Prices about average for sushi. I was curious about a Sushi place in Jackson, but it did not dissapoint. We will be back. This is by far the best sushi I have ever had. I've never been to japan so I'm not sure how Americanized it is but regardless it's amazing. I've tried sushi restaurants everywhere I've gone from myrtle beach to Vegas to LA and nothing has even compared to AKA. The maki 7 is a must and everything else I've had there has been something to brag about. Comparable prices as far as sushi goes and service is decent. Met up with some college friends here and absolutely loved it. They have a great atmosphere both inside and out. The place was cleanly and the service was very attentive. Food is great and drinks are awesome. However, the young gals at the hostess stand are absolutely clueless. They do not greet you as you enter - simply ask "How many". This last time I placed a To Go order and sat at the bar. Finally the bartender was aware that I had been there a while and checked the bagged orders sitting next to the hostess stand. I was 10 feet away -- they should have been able to track where I was. I mean there was 3 of them and only 25 people in the whole restaurant. It's more than good food. I was up in Jackson on a business trip and just wanted a simple dinner. I am from the D.C. area which has some amazing sushi restaurants and this place was equal to some of my favorite places back home. It is a small spot but service was good and the food was incredible. I only tried the rolls to start with (Vegas, Salmon) but I am going to try out some other dishes later this week. It is definitely worth a stop here to have some quality sushi. read more

Extremely friendly staff. I liked the atmosphere even though we were there for a pick up. We ordered the spider tempura and spicy tuna tempura. Compared to Ichiban I felt it lacked a bit in flavor. They were 5pcs each which doesn't seem like much but they were cut thicker then the norm. I will definitly give them another try. read more

Sushi tasted good and appeared fresh however the restaurant was dirty, there were many dead flies in the window sills and flying around in the restaurant. Tried AKA Sushi for the first time today. Several fiends had mentioned how great it is so thought we would give it a try. The atmosphere is very nice and nicely decorated. We were seated very quickly during lunch. I was surprised that miso soup and salad do not come with your meal unless you order certain entrees. Almost every sushi restaurant I have been to offers complimentary miso soup and salad. One person in our group ordered an entree that came with the soup and salad. The salad was very saturated in dressing. The bottom of the salad bowl looked like soup itself. There are no soy sauce dishes provided for sushi dipping as lost sushi restaurants offer. Now to the sushi. Not that great. The California rolls are small and the avocado inside did not seem fresh. It was slightly grayish/brown. The shrimp in the tempura roll was tiny and one piece of my sushi didn't even have any shrimp in it. The quality of sushi reminded me of the sushi one can purchase at the sushi counter at Kroger. I don't think we will be back, especially considering we drove almost 30 minutes to try this place out. Our server even commented that an item in our order did not look appetizing. read more

My daughter and I have eaten here a number of times over the past 3 years as she arrived at and left college. The sushi has always been really good. The time before last I tried the beef teriyaki and it was also very good. Last night we had a very different experience. We had a party of 5 with 3 people ordering sushi and two of us getting the beef and chicken teriyaki . The food took a while and the sushi was great but the teryaki was absolutely stone cold. The beef was also very overcooked and looked like it had been cooked at least 20 minutes before. The server offered to have the beef and chicken teriyaki remade which we agreed to and she left the cold ones in front of us (maybe to keep the kitchen from sticking them in the microwave...). The recooks took quite a while and finally arrived with the beef well cooked, but a MUCH smaller portion - the chicken came back warmer but not at all hot. They also came back so late that everyone else was almost done. I was quite shocked that a manager did isn't stop by to at least say something, but there wasn't an obvious manager onsite that we could discern. Overall we were pretty disappointed - given this id stick with the sushi as that seems to be something they can execute well. read more

I'm going to be the only negative review here... I couldn't believe Jackson actually had a sushi place, and had been planning on going for a while. I honestly wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised by the food itself. The sushi rolls were rather good. The nigiri had a ..well, kind of a weird, bitter aftertaste to it, but it was edible. What I did not like was the service. And when I say I didn't like it, I mean I won't be going back. The waitresses were obnoxious. VERY loud for such a small restaurant, patronizing, and so fast I felt like they were staring at my back the whole time I was eating. I had no sooner finished with something than it was whisked away. And I don't mean a leisurely thirty seconds later, I mean within five seconds. I poured out my can of coke into a glass and it barely touched the table before it was taken from me. It was creepy. Really creepy. I had barely finished swallowing my last piece of sushi before they brought our check. And when my husband pulled his card out to pay, they brought it back and addressed him by his first name, which we both find rather invasive. This is, I swear, the first time I have ever found a waiter or waitress to be *too* helpful, but this was incredibly obnoxious. The food was good. The waitresses, not so much. Poor excuse for a Japanese Restaurant. Managed and staffed by unprofessional adolescents. Guests are subjected to obnoxious loud singing and childish banter emanating from staff in the kitchen. I hope the ABSENTEE OWNERS READ this and make changes because AKA has potential! They put a lot of money into decorating the place. The layout is OK but....The floor is haphazardly swabbed smelly sour mop water leaving a dismal stench in the restrooms. The food is decidedly less than authentic. I do not believe they could shave the fish on my drab, uninspired, Chirashi any thinner. The octopus had a strong odor that made it very unappetizing. Its a darn shame they cant deliver solid Japanese fare to the area. Gaijin Maki is not sushi. read more

AHAHAHA bellowing" zone. I won't be returning anytime soon. Meeting a friend for a film in Ann Arbor but was hungry so thought I'd stop for a quick bite. Stressful. We'll eat sushi in Ann Arbor next time. Tried to give you a chance. Easy fix for the design flaw which requires the obnoxious "CORNER IN/CORNER OUT" bit. The sushi is great however I don't think I've ever been to a sushi restaurant where they don't give you soup and salad and charges you for it on top of that. Or certain amount of rolls you order= number of soups and salads you can get. Their concept is promising with their new renovations and added additions to the menu, but I'd probably only stop by here if I'm having a severe craving for sushi. Went here a second time the other day. Service was better this time. Sushi was still good. They obviously had one chef doing the "basic" rolls & one doing the top quality stuff. The chef doing the good stuff was right in front of me. What creativity! He was awesome. I watched him for 30 minutes while I ate. Just amazing presentation. My ONLY knock on this place is that they kinda nickel & dime ya on the extras. It was $3 for hot tea :( The miso soup was pretty cheap. I used to LOVE this place, but ever since the expansion it's went down hill. All of the veteran wait staff I looked forward to seeing are gone, the sizes are smaller & the prices are higher, and the quality has decreased (ex. mushy wasabi). If we had more options for sushi I would completely stop going here. read more
