Normally I would give this place 4 stars but I am going to give it 5 because we are talking about Jackson Michigan. I would be please with this place in Ann Arbor but in Jackson it really is a gem. The inside is very sleek and modern. Exceptionally clean and there are a ton of great windows. The view in is much better than the view out but what can ya do. The sushi was moderately priced for sushi. A spicy tuna roll I believe is $6 and their fancier specialty rolls were $14-$16. The rolls aren't huge but they also aren't small. My dad got one of their noodle bowls. He is the type that doesn't let his mash potatoes touch his green beans and thinks guacamole is unnecessary (how are we even related!?). So the fact that he really enjoyed it and later said "would you be offended if your mom and I came here without you?" Is a pretty big compliment. read more

One of my favorite sushi restaurants. They have so much more, but I come here specifically for the sushi. It is made by professional sushi chefs. Everyone that works here is polite, cheerful and professional. I am beyond impressed with the quality. The price is on par with a normal ethnic restaurant, but you get top-quality instead. As a native of Jackson who moved away and came back years later, this place is a surprise. A trendy sushi bar with a decidedly minimal, modern interior (contemporary white wood walls, black faux-wood flooring, pale white tables), AKA is something you'd expect to find in Ann Arbor. Conveniently located just off 94 and Jackson Crossing adjacent, it's still somewhat hidden in that small strip with Starbucks on an elevated area off to the side of West Ave; you have to know it's there. It was a really interesting experience. They have a variety of saki flavors. It might not have been a good idea to try a $21 saki for our first saki experience, but it was certainly unique (can't recall the flavor, but it was white, creamy, a little sweet and very alcoholic. It came in a adorable black pot with a removable middle section for pouring). I had the ginger salad, the veggie roll and some kind of vegetarian appetizer. The latter consisted of deep-fried veggies, including sweet potato. It came with a dipping sauce that strongly resembled meso soup. The rolls were excellent - firm and crisp. Ginger salad was great. For dessert, we split the tempura green tea ice cream. Essentially, it's ice cream with sweet dough fried around the perimeter of the ice cream. It was amazing. I'm glad this place exists. I have gotten sushi from here many times but today I think will be the last time. Portion of sushi was so small. Sushi tasted incredibly fishy, it was supposed to be a vegetarian roll. "Don't forget the Sake"! Did you know that Sushi is NOT raw fish? Most of Jackson doesn't know this as I've recently found out. In fact, a quick poll of some folks around here seem to have in mind "Sashimi" when the more worldly invoke the term "Sushi". Their loss, I suppose: AKA is a scrumptious, delicious, healthy, and fun place to eat, where customer interaction, ambiance, service, and convenience converge into a Shangri-La not expected in this small town. True, some menu items are in fact just some form of fish, but many others include just vegetables, or a delicious combination of fruit (like Avocado) and Tempura (deep-fried whatever). In fact, if you are a land-lubbing Westerner scared of a little culture, you should try the California roll, which is often Crab meat, Avocado, and Mango and has a zesty, sweet flavor. AKA's California Roll is good, but their Spicy California Roll is great! Even if you are too chicken, that is what you may eat. The Chicken Teriyaki bowl is one of the most Americanized and probably the most familiar item for those of you unable to have a little adventure, and AKA's is delicious. Finally for those of you who DO enjoy some excitement, should order the Sushi Boat sometime, which is a 4-person dish served on a Clipper-style model ship and is always the envy of all who sit nearby. Yummers! I definitely want to come back! It's pretty hard to find a non-chain restaurant in Jackson, not to mention, it's also pretty hard finding ethnic food in Jackson. So it was pretty cool when we came across AKA Sushi. They had a great selection of sushi to choose from (a whole entire 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper!), with a smaller sheet for other items like rice bowls, noodles, etc. I had the tempura shrimp sushi, tried the avocado rolls, and the spicy shrimp rolls, and it was all freaking good. It's a small location (seats about 30?), but that makes it feel more nice and cozy. There's a sushi bar where you can watch your food being made. I wish they had a plum sake, but (and I'm currently living in Cali), it was nice to see Japanese (or at least Asian) workers behind the sushi counter making the sushi. read more

I was trying to convince my mom to come with me for her first sushi experience. I'm so glad that she didn't! They *do* know that sushi us meant to be bite-sized portions, right? These amateur rolls were biscuit-sized and over-stuffed with rice. Almost impossible to eat with one bite. Everything tasted frozen. I caught a glimpse inside one of their freezers, and it looked like it *was* all frozen! The spicy tuna was not spicy, and looked like pink tapioca. It tasted like it too. There was no spiciness involved at all. The spider roll was NOT good. Definitely not fresh crab. I'm not even sure that was fresh this month. Looked and tasted spoiled. You want confirmation of that? For going on two days now, I've been afraid to leave the house and get too far away from a "throne". I've been here before, and on previous trips, I remember kinda digging the place. I've been a somewhat regular at Aka for about 4 years. I LOVE Japanese food, and the food at Aka is some of my favorite out of the places i've tried in the Ann Arbor or Lansing areas. I've rarely tried a roll here that I didn't like. They recently added some ramen dishes to their menu which is super exciting to me. That being said, the service is lacking. This place opened my junior year at Albion, and kind of became a regular haunt for my sorority sisters and me. And then after I graduated, I moved to Ann Arbor, which is burgeoning with sushi options. I still haven't found anywhere I've liked quite as much as this one. Positives: The portions were large. It appears they sacrificed a half a head of lettuce for the obligatory salad. The Saba, hamachi and unagi nigiri all looked great and tasted pretty good too, but didn't quite live up to their appearance. I am sure their international (read sushi rolls with the rice on the outside and various sauces) would have been very good. That said, the nigiri was good enough that I ventured off the sushi menu... Negatives: The gyudon was not bad, but also not good. I don't know how to describe it well. The flavor was weak and the beef didn't look right, too pale. Should have stuck with the sushi menu. The non-sushi menu is the true test of a Japanese restaurant. Also, I don't think the Ikura was fresh. A little mushy and in my experience the eggs should pop with flavor, but these were duds on arrival. Conclusion: Especially for a small town, I'd give thumbs up for the sushi. I would not recommend venturing off the sushi menu. If I lived in Jackson I'd probably go back on occasion. But for my money, I'll likely see if any of the local Mexican joints have good taquitos next time I'm in town. read more

I've visited AKA somewhere between five and seven times and while honestly the sushi has been mediocre in quality, nothing had been so aggravating to be worth reporting in a negative review. Also, some forgiveness is extended as this area is not exactly overflowing with sushi options. However, I had noticed that in past visits takeout orders were consistently and unexpectedly longer waits than relayed on the phone when placing the order. For example, "Ready in 30 minutes" generally translated to 40-50 minutes in reality. Frustrating, but not Earth shattering. Most recently I placed a very simple and small order and was informed that it will be ready in 45 minutes, 50 minutes on the long end. Not wanting to spend time hovering in the small wait area with the standard mass of unmasked customers (credit to AKA for having their staff masked at least), I waited the full 50 minutes before entering to pick up my order. To cut to the chase, I had to wait for another (that's on top of the first 50 min) full HOUR+ before my food, again simple, was prepared. During my wait I of course had the pleasure of watching a fully staffed kitchen work at a snail's pace, miss orders, and generally throw efficiency to the wind. To add insult to injury there were several other patrons in the exact same boat all clearly less than impressed. All the while orders were still being taken over the phone to add to the mess. After trying my best for that hour+ to separate myself from the unmasked horde gathered near the door I was quite T-ed off. It is absolutely not an exaggeration to say that I could have easily drove to more than one grocery store, purchased ingredients, prepared my own food (including starting with cold oil in a pan), eaten, cleaned the kitchen, and taken a nice nap all in less time than it took for this fiasco. Another customer rightfully mentioned that they could have driven to Ann Arbor, placed an order, and returned in less time. There was no excuse for how this was handled, believe me I was trying to find one. read more

My husband and I came here tonight while on our way to Chicago. To our surprise, the rolls and nigiri were really good! We had Volcano II roll, Angel roll, white tuna nigiri, and yellowtail nigiri. Fresh, tasty, and fulfilling. Prices are pretty reasonable; and their service is great as well. So glad we came here instead of going to Panda Express. I met my college buddy for lunch at AKA, who was visiting his wife's family lives in the area. To be honest, I was very skeptical to try Japanese place in Jackson, Michigan. I was like, "Japanese restaurant in Jackson?! " I got more concerned as I noticed sushi chefs were not speaking Japanese... But what a wonderful surprise! Chirashi Sushi and few other rolls I've ordered were prepared right, and tasted great! I always order Chirashi Sushi (various sashimi over a bed of rice) whenever I try out a new Japanese place. It gives you a great indicator of freshness of fish, and how well rice is prepared. AKA was using fairly good grade of rice too. Okay, egg was not done right to be picky. Too sweet and adding yellow food coloring. A buddy of mine ordered a lunch box, which allow you to taste different stuff. On this end (stuff prepared in kitchen) I was not too impressed. Tempura was not done right, Gyoza was frozen stuff, and miso soup was lacking "umami." In quick summary, AKA serves good sushi, but "okay" kitchen stuff. Also bento box for $15.00? That's high. Chirashi Sushi at $19 is not too bad for what I got, but one version for lunch and dinner? It would be a great improvement if AKA could improve menu variety (lunch vs. dinner menu). I went to AKA Sushi as part of a group of 7 to celebrate one of our co-worker's birthday (sushi is her favorite meal). We were stopped in Jackson for the night as part of our children's theatre tour route and had heard great things about the sushi at AKA. I would say that we were more than satisfied with our experience. Our server, Libby, was efficient and had great recommendations which was much appreciated by the sushi virgin in our group. The sushi was artfully crafted and tasted even better than it looked: fresh fish, perfectly cooked rice, and delicious sauces adorned each roll. The atmosphere was terrific too! Very clean and a comfortable size for our larger group. We were pleasantly surprised to encounter a high quality sushi joint during our night out in Jackson. read more

I'm amazed that Jackson has a quality sushi place like this! Normally you'd have to do a bit of driving to get somewhere that would offer quality like this. I think the food and service is very good. However, I docked it a star since it is bit pricey and that I really liked the more private and cozy decor of the original place before they remodeled into the much larger restaurant it has become. Of course, I'm happy that they are doing well, but I think it lost a bit of its charm and seems a little generically modern inside now. Ate at AKA for first time today. This is a small place, so be prepared for it being busy at lunch time. Service was very friendly and the sushi was excellent. We sat at the sushi bar and so it was fun to watch the sushi being made. Prices about average for sushi. I was curious about a Sushi place in Jackson, but it did not dissapoint. We will be back.
