Russell was very helpful. I was looking at gardening boots, but they didn't have my size. Russell called their other store and was able to offer some options. He was engaging and friendly. The store offers an array of grills, power tools, paints and general hardware supplies. The shelves are remarkably well organized and neat. Many shelves were empty as I assume they are preparing for spring inventory. Many items were on clearance including Yetis so there are some great deals. In the entry alcove is a fascinating history of the hardware store's evolution. The history dates back to at least 1889 when the store was located at 110 West Main Street in Carmel. The store has been owned by four families start with O. W. Nutt prior to 1889. Steve White bought the store in 1984 and built the current location on Rangeline Road in 1989. I love that someone took the time to capture the history. There's plenty of parking in their private lot. You can only enter or exit going north in Rangeline, but the roundabouts make going in the right direction easy.

Hedlund's Hardware has to be one of Indy's weirdest little gems. Located in practically the perfect…read morespot on the corner of 62nd and Keystone with a Broad Ripple Avenue address, Hedlund's Hardware looks and feels like a blast from the past precisely because it really is a blast from the past. Established in 1935 by Claude and Mary Hedlund, Hedlund's was at first a General Store but now limits itself to a somewhat broad definition of hardware and a personality that practically defies explanation. I avoided Hedlund's for quite some time. I'm a wheelchair user and Hedlund's Hardware is one of those places that practically screams out "You're going to break me!" as I delicately wheel myself through the aisles (or the ones that are passable, a fact that will change from visit to visit). The truth is that some people will hate a place like Hedlund's. It's a chaotic, eclectic, and seemingly disorganized (It's actually fairly well organized) establishment in a world where we want big box convenience and 19-year-old Tommy pretending he knows everything there is to know about plumbing or house repairs. HINT: Tommy doesn't know. At Hedlund's, though, they do actually know stuff. Hedlund's is not a big box store. In fact, it's not even a particularly big store though it's much bigger than it appears from the outside. Hedlund's is not a Sullivan's Hardware, a nearby behemoth that is also local but is much bigger and more contemporary. Hedlund's is, at least in my view, a bit of a cultural icon. It remains in the Hedlund family and is locally owned. I have no idea if this is the original building, but it's definitely symbolic of the history of the area. As I noted, if you need true accessibility it's not likely to be found here. You can get in the doors (most days) as they're level to the ground. That said, Hedlund's packs stuff in here and aisle passage is hit-and-miss. However, folks are friendly, helpful, and actually knowledgeable here and it's worth it to at least visit the place even if you don't completely fall in love with it. It's a unique space, a unique hardware store, and sort of an outcast right between Lowe's and Sullivan's on Keystone yet it continues to be a beacon of sorts and I'm sure glad it's here.

Last October, I took my door screen to Great Lakes Ace Hardware in Zionsville to have the screen…read morereplaced because of some minor damage. The repair took about three weeks, which was fine since I was done with screens for the season, so I put it away in the basement without thoroughly examining it. Shame on me, or the drama I'm about to describe could have played out during the winter instead of missing this entire spring season when I needed the screen. In early May, when I went to put the screen back into the door, I discovered that the frame had been rescreened such that the width in the middle was 3" less than at the top or the bottom. In other words, instead of being a rectangle, the frame had one side that resembled a crescent moon. Needless to say, this rendered the screen insert totally unusable. I wouldn't have thought it necessary for me to instruct people who fix these things for a living that a screen is supposed to be rectangular. I took the screen back to have it re-screened properly. The people in the store told me that it would be done free of charge but would take about three weeks because it was the busy season. I asked them if since this was a warranty job to correct their error, could it be moved ahead in the queue so that I wouldn't have to wait so long. The response was, yes, they could put a note on the order to that effect, but the people who do the screening (at a different location) would probably ignore it. They were right. 2 1/2 weeks later, I received a call telling me that the screen was ready. When I went into the store, I was shocked - as were the employees - to discover that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING had been done to the screen. It was still misshapen and unusable. The employees prepared to send it back, and put a detailed note on the screen explaining exactly what needed to be done. They also told me they would call "their contact" at the other location to see if the order could be moved up in the queue due to the unusual circumstances. Ha! Yesterday, almost 3 weeks later, I called the store and was told the screen was there. What I went to pick up the screen I discovered that once again ABSOLUTELY NOTHING had been done to the screen. It was still in the same misshapen and unusable condition as it was when I originally brought it back, and when it came back again, and the instruction note was still attached. Even the store manager agreed that something was very wrong here. As the situation had morphed from beyond ridiculous into the surreal, there was no sense in trying to send the screen back a third time. The store gave me a refund for what I paid last fall for the privilege of waiting six weeks to have my screen, which originally had just a small hole, rendered totally unusable. I took the screen elsewhere for proper repair, since I cannot use it in its present condition. Frankly, this megillah does not speak highly of Great Lakes Ace Hardware. The people at the local store were nice enough and tried their best, but that doesn't change the fact that someone at the location where the screening work is done is either a complete idiot or is engaging in a measured exercise in customer contempt. Errors happen, certainly, and the original problem would have been overlooked had it been rectified promptly. But it wasn't - I waited a total of nearly 6 weeks this spring to get my screen fixed, but it was sent back - not once but TWICE - with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING having been done to it either time, despite specific instructions. Great Lakes Ace is the place with the _____. You fill in the blank. I'm done with these people.

He told me he had never seen or heard of anything being online as I was offering to show him the info on my phone. I was confused about this reaction because it was this store that prompted me to sign up for the awards program online in the first place. He seemed agitated and cut me off mid-sentence and walked away from the register. He also said he would 'check with someone.' The cashier and I were both confused by this. She asked him to confirm whether or not he was talking to someone else about it while he was standing 10 feet away noticeably not busy. He scoffed and replied 'I'm not doing that today' while rolling his eyes. The cashier looked uncomfortable and apologized to me. The manager didn't care if I made a purchase or not. I'm not sure if he was in a bad mood before I came in, but he was unnecessarily rude and unprofessional in a situation that could have easily been treated with more grace. The other Sullivan locations nearby have been amazing with their customer service. I recommend shopping with any one of them instead.
