I just moved to Ridgewood and like to walk the five avenue blocks to Akaru on Sunday evenings for sushi and sake. I get to sit by the window and watch the goings-on on Wyckoff. The food is good as is the sake. They also have good lunch specials.

Placed an order for food. Asked for chopsticks and dressing on the side, since this was a delivery. They increased the price of my order . If they're going to cheap out on plastic and ginger dressing imagine what they would do with the fish. Not worth the risk. I would avoid.

This is my usual spot for some good fresh Japanese food. I come here at least twice a month. It's quiet relaxing the decor is cozy. Brick walls with candlelight. Perfect for a date or a run in. The staff is very friendly. They serve the food fast but not to fast, and I never feel rushed. The prices are great and the quality is amazing. Definitely recommend this Japanese restaurant.

New to the area and have been trying out different sushi spots. We ordered off seamless. First off, prices were very good compared to other local spots. Regular rolls were in the $6-$7 range. Specialty rolls mainly ranged from $11-$14. The two regular rolls were solid. Not too much rice (which I prefer) and large pieces of fish. Speciality rolls I also thought were excellent quality. The Phoenix roll had perfectly crisped tempura shrimp. Christmas roll had tons of fish for the price and had a fun chili sauce on top which was unique! Chili oil was very spicy though so don't recommend to those sensitive to spice. We also got the gyoza which came with a sweeter sauce and were great. Overall great quality for the price and the fish tasted very fresh. Would order from here again!

This place cheats you. They didn't send some of the items we ordered. Nothing looks like the photos on the menu. Portions are MUCH smaller than normal. And a lot of the food came crushed. We spent $100+ for dinner for two and when we complained they weren't interested. AWFUL.

Great sushi and sashimi combo! For $49 it has a lot of sush and sashimi and two rolls! The sashimi cut was very generous with the portion and fresh! It also come with two miso soup and two salads. When we don't want to fo to Manhattan, this is Our go-to Sushi place in Ridgewood!

My new go-to for takeout in the area! Coming from Hawai'i, I've been looking for good Japanese cuisine near me. For only $20, I got the Salmon Katsu Dinner Box that came with Shumai, tempura, California roll, soup, salad and white rice. It was sooooo worth the price! I even had enough for leftovers. Definitely recommend if you're ever in the Bushwick area.

It's been open for a few years, so clearly it has a good enough formula to keep the neighborhood happy. I have been here once before, but returned last week after dining several meals at Tomoni in Jackson Heights. Apparently, the owners are friends. Nonetheless, I needed to make the comparison. After my first few bites of their Tora Don and Chirashi Don, it was clear that this restaurant has the better quality seafood. Each slice of sashimi had vibrant colors, clean taste, and the proper texture. Tomoni is not bad, but fall slightly short of this caliber. With that said, there is an even farther gap between their rice quality. Though Tora is very good, Tomoni produces nearly perfect texture and acidity for my taste buds. Other than the best omakase restaurants in NYC, Tomoni shines as one of the best versions of sushi rice in the five boroughs. Service is good and space is cute. If I have a craving for some decent Japanese food, I would drive 20 minutes here for a meal anytime.

While wandering through Bed-Stuy on a weekday evening, my husband and I decided to try out this new…read moresushi spot. It wasn't terrible--but I had a lot of mixed feelings. Food: 3/5 I'm a huge sushi fan, so I was excited when I saw a deluxe sashimi set on the menu. Unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark. The scallop was thinly sliced and lacked the rich texture I was hoping for. The salmon and other cuts were decent, but short and oddly shaped--chunky yet small, which made the whole presentation feel a bit off for something labeled deluxe. We also tried to branch out and ordered the short rib entree. For $21, it was shockingly small--definitely a single-person portion, not sharable. I added extra ikura to a salmon donburi bowl for $2, but it was barely a teaspoon's worth--just enough to say it was there. Oddly, the salmon slices in that bowl were thinner than the sashimi we had just eaten, and overall, it left me still hungry even after sharing a maki roll. Lastly, my husband ordered a green salad, which somehow took the entire meal service to arrive. When it finally came, it was just plain romaine, cucumbers, radish, and dressing. For a dinner that clocked in at over $150 (after tip), we definitely left underwhelmed. Service: 3/5 This part wasn't bad, just confusing. We were seated quickly, but the pacing of the meal was strange. Our seaweed salad and soups came out promptly, but the green salad came last, after the hot dishes and nearly after my husband finished eating. Also, a small thing--but when I'm paying $16 for four oysters, I want to know what kind they are. The menu just said "West Coast oysters," but our server couldn't tell us the variety or origin. Not a huge deal, but it added to a general lack of polish that didn't quite match the pricing. I don't think I'd return. For the price, there are better sushi options in Brooklyn with higher quality, better portions, and clearer service. Still, I appreciate new spots opening up in the neighborhood, and I'm always happy to try something new. Hopefully they refine the menu and service with time.

They'd been on my radar for a while…read moreand we stopped in on a Saturday evening when we wanted dinner but not anything too heavy. This fit the bill exactly. We started with the salmon belly carpaccio which I'd say isn't really a carpaccio because the salmon isn't sliced as thinly as you'd expect. But! I mention that just to set expectations. Nomenclature aside, it's an excellent appetizer. Served in a truffle and ponzu sauce, the salmon is lightly seared which yields two different textures to the fish. It practically melts in your mouth. Highly recommend this dish. For my entree I went with the trio don, which is 6 pieces of sashimi served over your choice of plain or sushi rice (sushi rice for me). The fish was fresh and flavorful. The portion was perfect for me. My boyfriend ordered a yellowtail roll and enjoyed that as well. We also shared a carafe of the cold house sake. I'd definitely come back and try more items on the menu. It's great for sharing and trying new dishes. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the prices were very reasonable.
