Pros: Food is great and service is usually really fast. I've always enjoyed the food and ambiance here. The only downside was that I accidentally spilled my water (of course cleaned it up), but kept getting dirty stares from the staff the entire service. The waitress probably asked 4-5x if my partner and I were finished with our food. Not sure if it was because they were about to close (the 5th time she asked it was 2:15pm and they close at 3). After I paid I had a empty water bottle that I filled with the water jug they give you- and staff gave dirty stares. I admit- it's unusual but it's just water. Mmmm, decent location. It's inside of the Waugh Chapel shopping center so if you're looking to shop before or after eating or go to the movies, all things are within walking distance of Akira. In regard to the restaurant, the language barrier made it a little difficult to order drinks from the bar outside of the pre-set menu. The ramen itself (pictured) was decent. I tried their squid legs and nope... couldn't do it lol, but the sauce that was provided on the side was good (pictured). Honestly, I have had better before and the friend I came with ordered a rice dish (not pictured). Waugh Chapel is becoming my favorite area to catch a movie or shop. It's peaceful and the parking lot is not a hazard zone. This place is your typical ramen spot. They have a great selection. Went for dinner on a Sunday and it was pretty busy but luckily got a table for two. The ramen itself was flavorful but not for me. I got the karraage ramen which was ramen + a side dish of karraage. They asked what we we wanted 10 different times the first 3 minutes of being there before I could read 2 things on the menu another lady came up and asked if I knew what I knew what I wanted yet. Ordered the bao and the menu didn't say it had spicy sauce on it so I had to scrape the sauce off if. I knew it was on there I would have asked for them to not put it on. Finally a ramen place in this area. So happy about this! We usually go for a 30min trek to get decent ramen and now it's just is conveniently located in our major shopping spot. Great ramen base and noodle choices. Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen is my favorite by far here. Another favorite is the karaage ramen, they serve the Karaage as a side outside your soup bowl, so what I do is get the Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen and order the Karate appetizer, to dip into the broth myself. Pork buns are also good appetizer option and takoyaki! Soft-serve matcha is my fave desert here. Glad they have a no-cone option, which I am a fan of! Yeah, my husband thinks I am weird lol. Staff is friendly and attentive. They quickly refill your beverages and check on you frequently. Place is nice and clean with ample seating options. An important tip regarding tips... our bill for a family of five during lunch had gratuity added. I don't know if that is status quo, but it's important for you to read your bill and offer gratuity appropriately. Don't double-dip, so-to-speak. Now that I've got that out of the way, let's get down to the nitty gritty. Better yet, the yummy tummy. Our server, Alex, took excellent care of us. The food was very good for the most part. The Karrage Don rice was a little on the dry and flavor-free side, but they serve it with some flavorful sauces so we can't fault them there... plus, most people who go to a ramen joint know that it's not worth going for the rice bowl. Except my wifey, lol. The ramen was full of flavor, though. The volcano might be a misnomer as it didn't produce any flames (not yet anyway). On a bald-guy-sweaty-head scale of desert to rainforest, it was a misty condensation. Bald guys know what I mean. Nevertheless, it was a tasty little dish and they might have been taking it easy on me. The miso ramen was also good. As a person who eats with my eyes, everything looked fantastic and didn't disappoint. If you give it a try, I hope you'll agree. The inside of the restaurant was really beautiful and trendy. A nice mix of modern decor and traditional Asian elements. Something that set this place apart is the way they serve water in carafes at the table into metal cups. Our water was always cold and filled to the brim thanks to our server. It would be great to see more restaurants doing this. Overall I thought the food here was okay. I was really hyped to have a ramen spot close to the house, but I wasn't blown away during my visit. For a 16.00 bowl of soup I expected more of a portion. Something similar to a portion of Pho. I don't think that it was enough for the money, and the price to add ala carte was crazy. 2.50 for a slice of pork, and 8.00 for a portion of steak. I can literally get a good chuck eye steak for 8 bucks. The staff was okay I guess, they didn't really do anything more then the require stuff, no courtesy check ins or refills. Maybe i'll check in later down the line to see if anything changes down the line. Hit. the. spot. I'd been craving ramen for a bit so I was glad to find this spot not too far from home. I got the Karaage Ramen to go and prayed the noodles wouldn't be overcooked by the time i got home. No need to worry! I got home and, thankfully all components were separate so no overcooked noodles. The broth had appropriate depth. Noodles (thicker than I'm used to but it worked) had a bit of chew. I was a happy woman! I did make changes - no fish cake, egg, bamboo shoots, nor mushrooms. Added shrimp. So they are good about adjustments. The only surprise was I received one shrimp. It was a cutey but...a surprise. I guess you have to tell them how many you want but the server didn't ask and I didn't inquire. Truth, if I was paying attention to the price, I would have guessed it was per shrimp but I didn't *shrug* I was focused on the delicious smells coming from the kitchen. Also, if you are used to western presentation for shrimp, this ain't that! You're in a ramen house. Shrimp are head and shells on. Doesn't bother me when Im eating at home BUT, be warned if eating in the restaurant. No one wants to (watch ya) dig around in their food to shell and remove shrimp heads so be warned that's the charge when ya order steamed shrimp-however many you order. I also got oolong tea (can). Note to southerners- it is wholly unsweetened. Like water and herbs - dats it das all! I visited here mid day on a Tuesday. I went with two others and we were seated immediately. It's quite quaint here, but quick with service. Once seated our drink and appetizer order were taken. Shortly we were asked about ramen selection. My guests both chose beef ramen and I chose seafood ramen with veggie broth minus the squid. The broth was very flavorful, I'm just more of a phô fan and I'm sure I'll be berated for my choice, but it's not a comparison it's a preference. A solid 4.5. I had been praying for a Ramen shop to open in my town and my prayers were answered! I've been here a few times now, and it's such a great meal every time! Most recently my friend and I ordered takeout and it was an extraordinary meal! The ramen is definitely good, but not the best I've ever had. I've tried several of their varieties and they're all good. The chashu pork is succulent. The broth is okay, but could be more flavorful. I love their soft boiled eggs, but not a fan of how much they charge for them. The sides are sooo good too. The seaweed fries are crazy good- definitely give them a try! The chashu bao is off the charts amazing. I crave it on the regular. Gyoza and spring rolls are fairly standard, but still delicious. If you dine-in, the interior is clean and has a cozy atmosphere. If you order take-out or delivery, your order will be nicely packed up, and we've never had an issue of missing or cold items. There are still a ton of items on their menu we need to try and I am definitely looking forward to it! Not that we (Croftonites) need more options to eat because we have plenty of options already...but no complaints here tho...I love me a good Ramen! It was a good experience. The restaurant is small. We had plenty of elbow room but that's because we were there for a late lunch (3pm). I can imagine this place getting crowded quickly at peak hours. The service was subpar. Our server was friendly enough but not as enthusiastic. One server had a hard time understanding my question about the food that she had brought out. But not a dealbreaker. So we watched this place and eagerly awaited the opening. One evening, I was riding around to clear my head and to my surprise they were open! Yes, I had to order take out. There's no way I could put trying this place off! I walked in, it was a bit crowded. The tables are a bit closer than I anticipated too. I believe the thought was to optimize the space. The staff was very attentive as I entered. I was able to order and get my food pretty quick. Takeout is always tricky with ramen. I prefer to eat in vs. takeout but the husband was home. When I got it home, it was still hot and very simple to assemble. The ordered the chashu buns, volcano ramen and the karaage chicken ramen spicy. I LOVE this place! I've been here 2x so this review is long overdue. First off - Akira means bring your own booze if you want (that is how the waiter put it). So they don't serve alcohol but you can buy more food by bringing your own booze! Second (and this is why I am coming back) - they are so kid friendly, especially for picky eaters! I've ordered the Akira ramen with pork belly and all the fixings. My kids love noodles but are so picky on what toppings their bowl has. Akira put all my toppings on the side and divided the broth with noodles between my two boys and me. It was a win-win for all of us! There is also a "reduce salt" option, which is nice but I haven't done it. The waiter said my ramen of choice is not salty and that reducing the salt will change the flavor. But it is nice to have the option! I have had some BP scares! My other favorite was the tempura with shrimp and veggies. It is perfectly crunchy (which my kids love!) and comes with two homemade sauces, a wasabi Dijon and spicy mustard. So so good and added a nice touch! Food, overall, was sub-par. Gyoza was probably the only item that was a smidgen above average. Then again, how difficult is it to mess up gyoza? Tempura veggie + shrimp was stale and a bit chewy. The shrimp in the tempura was dry and you could tell it was old. Ramen was meh -- I had the Akira volcano. Broth lacked flavor and came to me luke warm. The cha siu was dry and overly porky tasting.
