I drove by this place twice yesterday while shopping and it smelled so good I couldn't resist stopping. I was looking at menu, and honestly didn't know what half of it was. This really nice guy came over to offer me help. I didn't want chicken or kabobs, something new. He recommended a lamb dish. I went with the lamb Kabsa. Still no clue what it is. Omg this might be one of the best rice dishes I've ever had!! The flavors are insane. There are also huge chunks of bone in lamb buried in the rice. It came with garlic sauce and this spicy chili looking sauce. If I knew they had garlic sauce I would have asked for a gallon lol. It's also a massive serving, when I opened the lid rice fell all over my counter. I'm going to have to freeze some. Told my friend about it and he's about ready to run to the place. I walked around shop and they had some interesting looking stuff but it was is in Arabic (?) i didn't know what a lot of it was. I did get these cookies that are like Milano cookies but better!! We recently stopped by Al Sultan as I had heard they had completely changed their recipe. They have almost doubled the prices of the shawarma, so we thought this will come with a better quality product. In the past, their meat was usually charred to bitterness. The meat was now cut into slivers, well seasoned, and cooked well. Even though shawarma meat is traditionally cooked on a spit, this was pan cooked. They were generous with the sauces, so I'm happy with that. The Bad: The meat was overcooked to where it was like eating jerky. It was fine at first until our jaws started getting tired. Also, the shawarma was served in a tortilla shell. WHAT??! This is totally unacceptable to not use pita/khubos or samoon/bread. This was essentially an overpriced jerky wrap. They were also small to where ended up going elsewhere to eat. The Good: I grew up in the Middle East, so I am very familiar with the different kinds of shawarma by region. Their food is far from the best in Buffalos Arabic cuisine, but they do have an awesome grocery store. In fact, they sell a few sodas which are hard to find in the States, and which i grew up drinking. Their groceries are also well priced. read more

First time here. Service was good and everyone was friendly The menu had things I was familiar with and some I wasn't. I had the lamb kabsa from the traditional Yemeni section of the menu as the Yemeni section were things I hadn't had before. It was very tasty. Good amount of spices that aren't a lot in American or European dishes, but not too much spice. The lamb was tender. We also shared Baba Ganoush. It, and the bread it came with, were both very good as well. Splitting the checks wasn't an issue. That might seem like a weird thing to point out but a lot of places still give you a hard time when you have 4-5 people and ask for separate checks. read more

Came here with a group of friends and we all had a great meal! We split an order of the baba ganoush which had a great smoky taste to it, and the clay-oven baked bread it came with was AMAZING! For our meals most of us got an entree which came with a salad that had a delicious dressing on it. I got the Saltah entree, which was served sizzling hot in a clay pot and even though it was delicious, I only had room for half of it so I look forward to eating the rest later. Let's start with the grape leaves ... they were some of the best I've had. The filling inside was warm and they were served over fresh lettuce and tomatoes. There was a perfect amount of acidity and herby deliciousness. We also ordered the Saltah. It was served bubbling hot with a generous amount of clay oven bread (4 large pieces). There was a decent amount of vegetables, okra and potatoes, in this stew-like dish. There could have been more meat (choice of chicken or lamb), but overall it was a very satisfying. Saltah seems to be good choice on a cold day. Although I ate this dish as if it were a bowl of soup for one, it would be great to share with friends and family, scooping it up with the warm bread that it was served with. The disappoint with the restaurant was the number of dead flies on the window sill. This is not something you want to see while dining out. I checked out the market that is connected to the restaurant and was super excited to find tahini at a great price, much cheaper than what it sells for at the grocery store. read more

Food is excellent. Very consistent. They take a long time to prepare your food. So order ahead. Give them like 15 minutes for a wrap. 1/2 hour for dinners. Worthy of the wait if you order in house. It's a grocery store with Halal market. They do have a banquet area. Not sure when it's open. read more

Whenever I'm considering eating out or ordering for takeout, my go to option always seem to be Al-Sultan. Their ordering process is uncomplicated, as is their food. However, in simplicity lies beauty in my opinion. This is one of the key reasons why Al-Sultan remains one of my top choices when it comes to restaurants. Another reason is the quality of the food. I've returned here on numerous occasions, and their food has remained consistent in both quality and taste. I'd highly recommend this establishment to anyone who asks. The place was clean and the service was friendly. They have private booths in the back so that ladies do not have to interact with the men. The space can also be used for large gatherings. Happy to have another middle eastern/mediterranean style restaurant nearby, kinda disappointed in the high prices. At $15 an entree and $8 an appetizer it just felt unnecessarily expensive. Flavors were what you'd expect, but the lamb tasted as if it was dirty. It was probably goat, but I cannot verify. Don't know how to explain it. The hummus was tasty and salad dressing was really nice. The pita bread was cold and pretty sure it was just store bought and not made in house like their competitors at "Crave King" on the other side of town, who make it fresh to order. They do feature an awesome dining area and bakery that I didn't yet experience. I think there is a store on the side as well. A friend and I came here two nights ago for a late dinner. We parked on the side street just past the restaurant. We were greeted warmly and told we could sit anywhere we wanted. There were many open tables. Their entrees seemed pricy so I ordered the shish kafta sandwich. Shish kafta is like a grilled beef kebab. It was a small sandwich and was pretty good. I had ordered a small salad with mine, which was good. The waitress had brought out an extra salad for my friend, on the house. I had ordered the Adeni Tea. I wish I would have seen Frank E.'s review ahead of time so I could have asked them to strain it. It wasn't a big deal though. It was good regardless. Besides tea and smoothies, they have bottled water and cans of pop. I didn't have to wait long for my food, which was a pleasant surprise. My friend ordered the Baba Ganoush. It was good with the pita. My friend had a chicken dish. There is a bakery attached to the restaurant. When you enter off of Ridge Road, it's to the right. That's definitely something I'd like to check out in the future. The staff were friendly, the food wasn't bad, and I'm happy with the pricing. We ordered takeout tonight at the counter, and shopped for groceries while we waited. The Lamb was absolutely amazing, and they had a great quality rice. We had really good Baba ghanoush, a mixed grill, and chicken breast. All dishes were served with salad and rice, plus garlic sauce and a seriously spicy pepper sauce (watch out for that). The bread served was so fresh and delicious. I'm currently on the couch in a food coma. On the grocery side, we were able to acquire some groceries that are hard to find in Buffalo. My partner is Persian, and they had some ingredients for Persian dishes we make. I was really happy to find pomegranate molasses, and lots of basmati rice. Wow. Excellent store/bakery. I was sad when the last Middle Eastern store in this spot closed. The building has been vacant for a long time. Now I am happy! I like unusual things and fortunately for me this is a place that I can find some. I am a sesame candy freak - the thin little sesame treats known as "sesame snaps". The last place that I actually found them for sale was in Miami Beach. Since then I have been ordering cases via Amazon. This store stocks these sweet treats as well as a round version known as "Cedar Garden Sesame Crunch". I now have two to choose from!!! I bought baklava, halva (not the kind sold at local grocery stores, a softer variety), frozen artichoke hearts, tahini and so much more! I couldn't find lokum, I guess I'll live. The restaurant. Hubby is in his glory. He bought the lamb chop dinner. Four chops, rice and salad. $21.99. MASSIVE dinner. Well worth the price. I had sides. Baba Ganoush and Fattoush. Delightful! In addition to the meals we received a pack of pita to sweeten the deal! The gentlemen working the store were so helpful and nice. I am so pleased to have discovered this place. One last thing...I attempted to order the Tabboula and the nice man behind the counter would not sell it to me. His reason - he felt that the parsley was starting to turn bad. read more

Quaint little restaurant in South Buffalo. They were a little busy the day we came so service was kind of lacking - but I can't hold that against them! They had tons of hungry soccer players to feed! Lol The food was excellent. The only reason I removed a star is because a lot of the stuff we had hoped to try was a no-go because the baker didn't show up this particular day and they were out of a LOT of stuff. Nice clean place, the stuff are friendly, We talk to the Chef he's really kind. We ordered chicken Kabsa, the rice and chicken needs more spice because no flavor, and for the desserts we tried Baklava, the Baklava is dry and they used cheap nuts. We will be back again to try more food. read more

Very lovely place with friendly staff. Although familiar with Lebanese food, Yemeni food is new to me and the staff was eager to share their knowledge about the food. As plant based (and kids are vegetarian), the staff is also eager to not include meat in the dishes. Tonight, we got to go: veggie platter, fava beans, and falafel shawarma. Enough food to feed three hungry people with leftovers for lunch tomorrow. The bread had to be homemade as still warm in the bag. Will be back for sure! read more

Loved our meal at Al Sultan. Baba ganoush was great with their home-made pita. Chicken Agdah was hearty, yummy comfort food - chicken and veggies in lightly seasoned stew. Lamb Haneeth was a generous portion of tender lamb over lots of wonderfully seasoned rice. Brought home leftovers for tomorrow along with an order of fateh - a beautiful dessert starring dates, honey, and a little cream.
