Love a good Old European style bakery and I think this is as close as we get in Lexington! I ordered a variety of loaves and each was excellent. They bakery staff were kind to offer advice and to offer to slice and/or pack up each loaf separately. The options rotate so I would call if you are looking for a particular item that is not in their regular plan. The pastry selection looked amazing but I would have loved a few more non-meat options since the other breakfast items looked amazing. Had been looking for a good bakery, especially for bread, ever since moving to the area and this bakery did not disappoint. From the breads and baguettes to the quiches and pastries, none of the items have disappointed. The pricing is extremely reasonable, and all the baked goods are incredibly fresh and packed with fantastic flavors and textures. A couple of times a batch of bread has tasted a tad floury, but that was quickly remedied when warmed up in the oven, and every other time the bread has been fantastic. The staff has also always been incredibly friendly offering efficient service (bonus is that there is a sort of open kitchen going on so you can see them working on making the baked goods while you are there which is kind of cool). Ashamed to say I just got around to buying bread, cookies, and pastries from Bluegrass, but it's true. I came in around 1:30pm on a Saturday and bought 3 demi baguettes, 4 Mexican wedding cookies, and a oatmeal coconut almond chocolate chip cookie. It only came out to $12.50-what a steal! The baguettes were delicious with the perfect amount of crunch on the outside and all three cookies were perfection! Will definitely be back to try danishes and other breads and cookies. The friendly folks and easy to view and order system makes it a perfect stop for your baked good needs! FYI: I didn't see donuts, cake, or cupcakes available so you might try going a bit earlier in the day since they probably sell out! read more

I've been looking for a classic local bakery, and I must have literally walked by this one on the way to other things in this shopping center without having registered that it was there. Finally I figured it out. The loaf I ordered was a mild rye flavor and easy to cut (they did offer to slice it for me, but I prefer to wait if I'm not going to share the whole thing the day I buy it). Their variety of breads rotates and is quite respectable. There were some very Old Europe vibes coming off of some of the other breads that definitely seemed worth an experiment to me. The pastry selection was a bit more of a mixed bag; there were a lot of things I didn't care for (surprisingly limited on vegetarian stuff outside of just straight bread), but the chocolate tart I got was as indulgent as it looked. I've eaten a few grocery store breads, but if I'm going to take on the calories, I might sooner come back here in the future. I'd visit more if they were open on Sunday, which they are not. read more

They're good but definitely not consistent in their products. One day they be tall and fluffy and the next day FLAT.

I called ahead at 9am to reserver a loaf of sour dough. My loaf was sitting out on the counter; I should have known right there. I didn't have time to inspect the loaf. When I got home and put out the bread with our meal, it was dried out, burn and had no "sour dough" flavor. It's been very cold, so at 6bucks a loaf I guess that I will feed it to the birds. Another hidden treasure that I found! I walked in and fell in love.... with all the breads n sweet stuff They make fresh bread every day! Every kind imaginable! Their desserts look decadent and taste heavenly. I tried s chocolate tart and OMG! It was out of this world with good quality chocolate with a great after taste! Also had the cherry Linzer... yummy! They even had little cakes... petite ones.. to be had for a few bites and be done with! But the best thing I found there were patties!! No, not beef/meat patties But actual veggie patties as they are called in the rest of the world (European influence!) photo attached for reference! I'd been missing those from back home m frankly, who has the time to bake them at home.. so now that I've found them, my tea time will become soooooo much better! The aromas in there were divine! This is a cute bakery near my house, and we had a great first experience. I appreciated the curbside pickup, so we called and out our order in once we arrived. Someone brought us our goodies and checked us out, making it so quick and easy! We ordered the pecan sticky roll (which was delicious), a chocolate chip cookie, and a loaf of garlic bread. The bread came with heating instructions, and was amazing! We originally tried this place for a cinnamon roll, but we quickly learned that if you don't arrive early, they sell out fast. We are going to visit again (early) so we can get some cinnamon rolls next time :) read more

As is often the case for me at bakeries, some items were great and some not so good. I loved the walnut bread, great flavor and texture with good chew. The mini ciabatta not as much. Flavor was good but did not have the open structure I expect from ciabatta. Also tried two scones and they were good but not great. Seemed a bit on the dry side. read more

My favorite bakery in town. We grab loaves of bread from here, and they always have such a wide variety. The Trail Bread with walnuts and raisins is the newest one I have tried and loved. Their croissants are especially tasty as well. They used to make an Herb 'n Cheese bread that was amazing but I think they stopped making it. I also keep my eye out for these small loaves called Salty Dogs, or another similar loaf that is spicy. You coudl practically eat them in one sitting (leave never last till the next day). So good to snack on. Very friendly staff who love to chat and answer you questions as well. read more

Simply asked if they offered any gluten free items and in return received an unfortunate, rude response along with a sharp comment, regarding the gluten in the air that' we were inhaling. I must have triggered something inside of the woman owner to respond in such an ignorant way. My husband and I were so excited to find a fresh bread and pastry bakery in the area, as he had already spotted an array of items, he would have been happy to purchase. But, due to the uninviting welcome we received, we chose to turn around and leave.. as we did the male owner apologized and thanked us for coming in, his way of acknowledging our "confusion" as to what just happened .. No worries, we said with a smile and headed out. BBC is where it's at, kids. This is the only bakery in Lexington that makes French bread worth eating. Don't get me started on that Sunrise crap. Gross. Full disclosure, I'm a pastry chef and ridiculously particular about bread. If you're a fan of the french bread at say, Kroger, or um the rolls at O'charlies, you're gonna be way out of your element here. Crusty. Chewy. Hearty. Old world style, hearth breads. First and foremost, this is a European style bakery. They have a stone floored, steam injected oven to get their breads all crusty and awesome they way they should be. So when it comes to authentic ciabatta, baguette, volkornbrot, etc, etc, this is it. You can get delicious, crusty, chewy bread made from scratch daily and with no preservatives. For Brian B comparing the bread to Great Harvest, apples to oranges my friend. Great Harvest is a chain, and an American style bakery. They specialize in soft, rich, shelf stable breads. (If you'd like to be scared, read the list of ingredients in GH bread. It's a mile long and pretty scary.) If you want something so soft your toothless gramma can gum it for dinner, BBC is not for you. If you want a honey-rich pillow soft loaf of whole wheat bread, again, that's not what you'll get here. There's nothing wrong with softy, tasty American style breads, but that's not what Bluegrass is making. So don't get mad when that's not what you get here. If you want some crusty french bread to go with your roast chicken, come here! If you want a thick slice of beer bread to accompany a hearty bowl of soup, this is it. Ciabatta for a bowl of pasta? Check. Jewish rye for the perfect sammy? Done. Fresh, hand made bagel? Yup. These guys are bread masters. Bread is the shining star here, so that being said, I'll be the first to admit I'm not wild about the scones or muffins here, or the other sweets (like tarts or cakes). They do have their fans, but I think those items really play second fiddle to the crusty, chewy, perfect batards, boules, and other bread wonders. Anyhow, this is a locally owned independent bakery. They are baking all night long; every loaf is hand shaped, hand cut, and peeled out of the oven on an old wooden peel. They baby their own preferments, biga, poolish, to get just the right flavor for each type of bread. The only real exception is the croissants and Danish- since they are yeasted pastries, I think they get special love and they come out spectacular. Fantastic fresh breads and pastries! I picked up a Chocolate Biscotti (amazing texture), Cheese Danish (perfect flaky, buttery crust) and Demi Baguette (best I've had since Europe). I picked the least adventurous items I know but, I was surprised to see how much variety there is! I envisioned the standard bread & sweets options you'd find anywhere else. Such a nice surprised at the end of a long work day. The employees were very friendly and helpful. They offered samples of the specialty breads on the counter. There were cheesy & spicy varieties. Then there were two large cases of different types of pastry, cookies, tarts etc. Again, So much to choose from given it's a local, small-business. I'm impressed. Finding a great local bakery is a really awesome thing. Panera and Great Harvest are fine and all, but bread is a little like coffee, there's something extra special about the indies. Anyway, so Bluegrass Baking is tucked into that little shopping center on Clay's Mill where there the old grocery store location is now a furniture store. You see it if you go to Fayette mall from this side. Go ahead and stop by, good bread is *much* more worth it than the mall. When you walk in, there's the counter at the front, then you can see all of the bread making magic going on behind. Real bread, people! Kneaded by real hands! They have a schedule where not everything is baked every day (I think the nut breads are usually baked on Thursdays, and seasonal breads once or twice a week) so if there's something specific you like, ask them which days they make it, so you can get it fresh. They always have slices to sample sitting out on the counter (and they give you a whole slice! not a lame little cube!) and they often have multiple different breads available for sampling. And they provide butter as well, so you can have the full bread-tasting experience. After all, how will you know if you like it unless you can test it under real bread conditions? I have a few recommendations: - Their chiabatta is excellent. Very, very crusty, but not so crusty that there's no bread inside. Crunchy *and* you can use it to mop up the last of your pasta sauce. - Mmmm... chala. Buy it on Saturday. Have with your lazy Saturday brunch. Then on Sunday, use the leftovers for french toast. - They rock the seasonal breads. I tried the pumpkin walnut last week, and I swear it melts in your mouth. There wasn't a damn thing about it that was healthy, but wow. yummy. The people who work there are super sweet. One guy even learned a few simple Polish phrases to use with my family and our other Polish friends who shop there. It was sweet.
