My husband and I have been regulars here as of late. Our usual order includes the chicken tiki marsala, garlic naan, rice, salad, and the aloo mater. The combination of the above are all superb. The service is always quick and prompt. The food is always delivered warm and on point. One downside is the parking situation. There is a small lot next to the restaurant but when it's full, street parking on a busy street is the only option. read more

It was my first time trying this restaurant. This is a Halal restaurant. I had the lunch special, which is nice in the sense that you get to have a taste of multiple different things. The nan bread was just the plain kind. It did not have ghee or garlic or anything, but good. I enjoyed everything especially the Seekh kebab and the sabzi. The dessert was gulab jaman, which I always enjoy, I love very rich, decadent things like that. I ordered mango lassie to drink, it was good, medium consistency, not watery, but not the super thick Punjabi style. It was a very nice, friendly, casual, dining experience. I hope to be able to return and try more dishes. This place is a moderately sized restaurant bordering on Inglewood Ave. The width of the interior is about the width of two large hallways/entryway side by side with the length of a semi trailer truck. They had two tvs, and the walls were mirrors and one way glass facing the street. The staff were nice enough, I felt as if some of them had a language barrier but that's no big issue. I ordered the lunch special and a mango lassi. The lunch special comprised of rice and bread, lentils, tandoori chicken, seekh Kabob, spiced vegetables, and chicken korma. The rice was pretty standard, but the bread was served hot and had a nice slight crisp to the soft interior. The bread also had sesame seeds, which amplified the flavor of the bread similar to a sesame seed bun or sesame ball. The lentils had excellent seasoning, a stew like texture and spread well on the bread. The tandoori chicken flavor reminded me of a hot dog with an aftertaste of louisana hot links. The seekh kabob is a nice coarse spiced beef with a spongy texture. The vegetables were cooked nicely with a kick of spiciness, but I don't personally care for veggies. The chicken korma was really tender, but the spices were on the lighter side of flavor. Lastly, the mango lassi was good and creamy, more dairy than mango taste with a thinner texture than expected. All in all, a very flavorful lunch. I was surprised at how well seasoned the food was and how it left a lot of impact on the palate. The lamb karahi was tough - no flavor. The fried chicken - was supposed to be a whole chicken like how it is in Lahore - the server said it's a whole chicken - it came out in pieces and cooked to death! It was so dry. It's not even for human consumption. The Paya had a burnt taste. Seems like the bottom of the pot burned. The brain masala was the only descent one. Naan was ok. Overall - will never go back again. Super bomb food -- Al Watan serves up rich, authentic flavors that hit hard in the best way. Everything is packed with spices and cooked to perfection. I wasn't a big fan of the customer service. I informed them I came to pick up an order and provided my name. One of the men who was there to also pick up an order saw my food on the table and kindly stated it is right here. However, the man working there didn't say much and it's almost as if I had to read his mind. I informed him I never received a receipt and he just looked at me. So I had to pull up my bank account and he was standing over me as I was pulling up my bank info. I stepped to the side so he wouldn't see all of my information. Lawndale and Hawthorne aren't exactly known for the food...except for Indian and Pakastani. Of those there is an unimaginable depth, and Al Watan is said to be one of the leading restaurants to eat. And the food is overall good, and I was fine with it hit I honestly wasn't wowed. The Lamb Khorma has tender meat and is overall a milder dish. The Goat Karahi is nice, with some tang from the tomato and sweet fragrance from the onion. Palak Paneer is always a solid option as well, the perfect vegetable to offset all the meat. The rice in the Chicken Biryani seemed a bit mushy and overcooked, and my preferred carbs were Garlic Naan and Onion Kulcha. Both had great texture - just the right ratio of fluff and chew. This review is for their Sunday buffet. They have a good variety of dishes and the chicken korma is really delicious! The only problem I have is with their paya dish. Their paya dish does not contain any bone cartilage, or bone marrow! They only have paya soup which is absolutely ridiculous! Other Pakistani buffets that have paya always have bone cartilage or bone marrow! When my husband and I confronted the manager when we were paying, he said that "the bones are hard to handle" so that's why there's no bone cartilage or any kind of meat in the paya. When I informed him that other Pakistani buffets have some sort of meat in the paya, all he said was "I know." Honestly, I think his response was just an excuse for them to be cheap. They shouldn't even offer paya if there's not gonna be any kind of meat in there! They should just offer something else in its place! Because of this, won't come back! read more

My boyfriend's family is Pakistani and this is their favorite place to get authentic Pakistani food. I've come here a few times now and completely agree that the food here is delicious! During my last visit, my boyfriend and I got the mixed tandoori plate, which is a mix of beef and chicken and a few pieces of naan on the side. It comes in a sizzling plate so it's super hot and fresh! The meat here is so delicious and I love how flavorful it is. The naan here is also really good and is always so warm and soft. They give complimentary salad and chutney which I also really enjoy. I would say that prices are decent for the quality and quantity of food; my boyfriend and I shared the mixed tandoori plate and were stuffed after our meal and had a good amount of leftovers to take home. The service here is good and they checked up on us throughout our meal. It is a decently sized restaurant and there has never been a wait to get seated whenever I've come. There is a small parking lot, however, it gets full quickly so a lot of the times, you'll be better off trying to find street parking. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in the area and one of the restaurants that got me through Covid. They have delicious lunch and dinner combo plates that will fill you up. I usually ordered these plates to go. But walking in, you're promptly seated and the menu is framed under the glass in the table. The food comes very fast! For my recent visit, we ordered the butter naan, chicken malai, chicken biryani, and mixed tandoori. The butter naan was flaky and soft. A perfect match with the chicken malai. The chicken here is tender and the sauce is sweet and spiced. The rice for the chicken biryani is fluffy and is served with bone in chicken. What I like to do here is mix some of the chicken malai with the biryani. The mix tandoori is piled high with a mix of beef and chicken. This is cooked in a clay oven. It's delicious and for the price you do get a lot of meat. The servers here are friendly and accommodating, and dining area is large. This unassuming building has pretty legit food! Unlike most Pakistani/Indian restaurants in the US, this place does not Americanize the food as much. The food does have a good amount of spice and flavor. I suggest going with their dinner special. It's reasonably priced at $13, and it comes with a smorgasbord of different curries as well as a piece of tandoori chicken, a seekh kebab, and naan. It is more than enough food for one person. We went a little overboard and also ordered their mixed tandoori. This was an insane amount of piled meat that we could not even come close to touching. I will say that their lamb in the lamb korma was a little dry and tough. Overall though, I definitely can see why it is so widely and highly rated. read more

Amazing food, well priced and great portions. I ordered the Friday dinner special through DoorDash it was prepared/picked up fairly quickly by the dasher. Honestly I was expecting a smaller container but was surprised to see the variety and amount of food I got (which by the way is one of the best Pakistani food I've ever had). The Friday dinner special included: Naan, chicken Seekh kabob, Chicken tikka -thigh, chicken korma, goat korma, rice, vegetable-sabzi and daal. I also ordered a mango lassi which was pretty good. Been coming here for 13+ years and every time I've dined here, the service was exceptional. It's been a while since I've returned to Al Watan to dine here with friends, but I don't know what happened to their service. It seems like you order something and they forget to bring 1 or 2 items out to your table. We ordered goat and chicken biriyani, tandoori chicken, naan, salad, water, sweet lassi, coke, and kheer. Food was delicious. There's no complaints about the food. Very tasty and the spicy yogurt sauce was a nice compliment all the dishes. The ambiance was a very desi cafe-like place. Big mirrored walls and the laminated menus encased between the table and the slab of glass. Seemed very 90's Desi restaurant, which I love. It gave me nostalgic vibes. The 2 star deduction was for the service. Seems like everyone is so busy that they forget what people ordered. I had ordered a coke and my friend ordered kheer to-go and they if we didn't ask about it, they wouldn't have overlooked the order. Another thing is none of the drinks had ice in it. The water was room temperature which I don't mind but friends where complaining that the water was warm and had to ask them to add ice. The cokes came out of the fridge cold but usually it's served with a glass of ice but it was served in the can with a straw. I think (especially in the summer months) drink have to be served with ice. There was a younger man there greeting and checking in on the customers which I thought was very nice but our waiter was an older man and he seemed like he would forget a lot. Above all else, good food at a very reasonable price. Just need to work on some aspects of service etiquette. read more

I came back again this past weekend and feel like it was even better this time. I ordered the chicken tikka which was perfectly seasoned along with sides of garlic naan and paratha. I was curious to try the paratha but also wanted the garlic naan so why not both? There was so much chicken I ended up taking most of it home, and it lasted 3-4 extra meals. The workers were all very warm and hospitable and kept checking in to make sure I was enjoying my food. I even ended up coming back later that same day to take an order of seekh kabobs to a friend, and the workers seemed tickled I came back again the same day. The good was that the food is advertised to be halal, and prices weren't insane. But the food was overall so mediocre. Nothing blew our mind and was either average or below average. The mango lassi had a sour taste. The chicken biryani barely had any chicken in it. The seekh kabob should be renamed cumin kabob as that was the only thing we tasted on it. The Chicken Tikka Masala is more like a traditional Chicken Tikka Masala vs what many confused as Butter Chicken. I really liked it, and it's a must have with Naan. The Naan was made fresh and served hot and really helps improve the overall meal. The Seekh Kabobs were served on a sizzling plate with onions, and it was delicious. The only thing I would add is the cilantro into the actual minced meat before they are grilled rather than just as a garnish. Overall, service was professional, seating was quick, and the food came out within 10 mins (although our order was small). I came here for a to go order of the Chicken Tikka and the Vegetarian lunch special. The lunch box included a masoor dal, a spicy chutney on top of the rice, and a side of mixed vegetables and Channa Dal. The Tikka was moist with a hint of smokiness, the vegetable dishes were tasty, and the naan was fresh and fluffy on the sides. I'm definitely coming back with my family for a Chicken Karahi, a Briyani, Dal Mash and an order of the Samosas. Service was good, the ambiance is fine and the place is simple.
