This place is not a fancy place but it is the most authentic Moroccan place I have experienced outside of Africa . Our friend Ilham had a birthday and her wish was to be in Morocco for an evening. And I think Abigail accomplished that wish! Terah and her had the saffron rice with chicken and I ordered the couscous special. It came with a small plate of hummus, beets, potatoes and greens. Just like when I spent some time at the foot of Atlas Mountains. But that couscous brought me back to Marrakech, where Ilham's mom makes a delicious couscous every Friday for lunch. The price was very reasonable. I will recommend this place to everyone I know. The view of San Francisco from there is pretty nice too! Oh and the cookies are to die for. This is a hidden gem we found! It's located in a business building with a great view of the water. Order at the counter first and pick a table to sit indoor or outdoor. I ordered the rice plate with chicken and eggplant which I appreciate that I have the option to choose both. This place on the other hand, was an amazing find with some of the most delicious food and excellent service. From the entree to the dessert and tea - the presentation, the quality, the amount and variety were truly phenomenal. The service was also outstanding - attentive, fast, very friendly, accommodating and beyond our expectations. We had various types of lamb shank special and it was amazing. This restaurant is tucked away in Ballena Bay. I wouldn't have found it if it weren't for Yelp. There's a patio out front with several plastic tables and chairs facing the bay overlooking the city. The view is amazing! We walk in and the place is empty. The menu is written on a big chalk board above the counter and you order your food there. As we browse through the menu, we waited a bit for someone to greet us. We both order the vegetarian plate and Moroccan mint iced tea. It was a beautiful day so we took a seat out in the patio. The food didn't take long and we devoured it. The eggplant was cooked perfectly w/ grilled onions on top. It was very flavorful, and loved the texture. Eggplants get mushy, but this was well done and delicious in my opinion. It came with a side salad w/ a vinaigrette dressing. I was very satisfied with this meal and the portion was just perfect. Upon stepping inside I didn't love the ambiance...very empty and felt a little dingy...some tables were left with dirty dishes with hovering flies (likely due to the amount of staff) We ordered the moroccan rice with chicken, vegetarian house special with couscous and harira soup, lentil soup and hummus plate. The morrocan rice was flavorless and the chicken was dry. Hummus was ok but nothing to write home about. The vegetarian house special had a very high ratio of couscous to vegetable so it felt like I was just eating couscous - good flavor though. Harira soup was good but on the tart side. Another hidden Alameda gem. Abigail's has a lot of flavor and pretty reasonable prices. They're never super busy inside so it's easy to dine-in or takeout. They really came through for my family on Mother's Day when we needed a last minute rez and I enjoyed their lamb shank dish which was so flavorful and tender. Wow! I just discovered this total hidden gem of Alameda. It's a mom and pop type of restaurant, where the furniture is a bit worn and silverware feels cheap. Don't let that deter you. The dining area is full of character, though I think it can benefit from playing a bit of Moroccan music at a reasonable volume. The location is great and the view is fantastic. Go for a walk along the bay after your meal. The chicken isabella (sandwich) was absolutely incredible. The flavor is unique and delicious. Skip the pita bread. The women running the shop are awesome and very sweet! I came with a couple of friends and we had no idea what to order. They were very patient with us, gave us their recommendations and even showed off the big family style platters they made for other tables! I got the chicken and rice.
