Unreliable and untrustworthy. Here is my account of our odyssey with Alabaster SF. 6/13 Alabaster driver picks up 2 big bags of laundry at our home. 6/15 Alabaster driver returns about half of the laundry. We pay $25. I claim that about half is lost to him. He swears that this is all he ever got. I tell him we will wait until the laundry has gone through our own next washing cycle so we know for a fact if something has gotten lost. 6/25 Laundry goes through our own wash cycle and we do indeed find many items are missing. 6/27 I email Alabaster claiming lost laundry including a detailed list and asking for reimbursement. 6/30 Alabster's manager emails me, apologizing for the inconvenience and announcing that they would conduct an internal investigation, for which they would need 1 to 2 days. 7/5 No email from Alabaster has arrived regarding the results of their investigation. I send them a follow-up email 7/7 Alabaster's manager sends me an email in which they agree to reimburse us for $250 for lost laundry, which I reproduce in its entirety below. In cases, though rare, where there is a mix up in the store one customer who received service the same day will receive an entire bundle of laundry that is not theirs. It has never happened that laundry was mixed inadvertently. However, given that the driver can not recall exactly what was picked up we can not verify our accounting either. Because there is still some uncertainty on our end we would like to offer a settlement of $250.00 for your missing items. We work really hard to try to maintain a high level of customer service, and we do appreciate your patience. We are especially saddened that this was your first service with us. In the Wash & Fold industry it is common practice that wash & fold items are "at your own risk" items, meaning that since the items are not counted and tagged like dry cleaning there is no way to validate claims for missing items other than the weight upon receipt, and the memory of those involved in the process. For dry cleaning and laundered shirts replacement costs are deter minded by the age of the item or limited to 10X the cost to clean the item. This is a standard dry cleaning guideline. I call the manager who suddenly reneges on the agreed-upon reimbursement with a slew of excuses (your email accepting the reimbursement was unclear whether you accepter the $250 offer, we never got the second bag of laundry, we can only give you a credit against future business [like we would give them more business before they made good on the damage they caused], you have to produce receipts for all the lost laundry...) I send Alabster an email, setting a 48 hour deadline to deliver the reimbursement check to us. 7/24 No check has arrived. e In the aftermath, I reported them to the BBB, who contacted them repeatedly, but they just played dead. For transplanted New Yorkers or anyone else who generates a lot of laundry, Alabaster cleaners is a godsend for one simple reason - they pick up and deliver between 7am and 9pm for free. Seriously, how great is that? I live in Jackson Square and usually they are able to respond within 15 minutes of calling. They take about a day to turn around the clothes. As far as the cleaning goes, they are fine - I haven't noticed any problems (and I've sent a LOT of clothes there) with either wash and fold or dry cleaning. This review is a bit of a laundry list (get it?... laundry...list...?), but bare with me. Once upon a time, I was a lazy bastard who didn't have time to do my own laundry before hopping on a plane down to LA, to perform my bridesmaid duties in dear friends' wedding. So, after seeing a 20% off door hanger from Alabaster, I called for Same Day Wash & Fold, advertised all over the website & said door hanger. I confirmed twice upon my laundry being picked up at 7:30am, that it would be returned by 8:00pm that night, so I could pack & sleep some decent hours before waking up at 5:30 the next morning and commencing what would be a weekend of satin, sleep deprivation, and too much champagne. At 8:30pm that night, after my laundry STILL had not arrived, I called Alabaster and found out that my laundry had not even been cleaned or taken out of its laundry bag that day! (Horror!) While I was willing to live up to many a bridesmaid cliche that weekend, I refused to be "that bridesmaid" who went commando and/or wore sweat pants throughout the whole festivities. Some of the staff offered to stay late (very kind... but it was after I made a big stink about it), and I waited up that night, till 11:30pm, for my laundry to be delivered, and arrived, sleep-deprived to LAX the next morning. So, I was all poised to write a scathing review of Alabaster... until.... not only did they give me that laundry for free, but they also gave me a $100 credit! AND called me on the phone to apologize a week later. Holy crap! It's not often that people eff something up and then go above and beyond to remedy the situation. Well, I was fine with that, and I asked, "Should I call back tomorrow instead?" and he goes, "No it's fine. I have your information." and I said, "What time should I expect him to come around?" and he went, "Around 10 AM." and that ended the phone conversation. Now it's the next morning and I'm up around 9:15 AM to gather my belongings and I woke up a little early just in case the guy decides to come up a bit earlier too. Fast forward to 10 AM, nobody shows up. I decided to give them a call, and of course, nobody answers. Tried calling again around 10:15, nobody answers. Okay..it's about 10:45 AM now, I'm just gonna give this place one last shot, nobody answers and I'm not gonna waste my time leaving a voicemail. For the Yelpers who get their laundry picked up in a timely manner as promised, or have had good experience with them, kudos to you. It's the same reason I decided to give this place a shot, I figured there were more good reviews then bad and hopefully I wouldn't have to be one of the negative reviewers too. It's a shame (for people like me and others who tried getting service from them but got nothing), because I gladly would've continued service with them every month for my laundry (I'm new to this whole Wash N' Fold thing), if they had just came the first time around like they said they would, even after I offered to call back again the next morning. It saddens me to hear that people have recently had issues with Alabaster. I've used their services off and on now for 3 years and have NEVER had an issue. They've always been on-time when picking up or delivering my laundry, and if they were ever going to be late, I've received a call. Syndey M.'s review on 4/2/2010 is very interesting as just yesterday (4/7/2010) my boyfriend scheduled pick-up service for this morning at 8am with a drop off of 6pm...and he's a NEW customer. Very odd indeed. One word of advice if you use their online scheduling...make sure your requested pick-up time is 6 hours in advance...BUSINESS TIME as the website mentions. I wouldn't use anyone other than Alabaster. Their laundry comes back clean and smells wonderful. Not to mention that it comes neatly folded in blue wrapping. :) read more

I did not know laundry service could be so good! When I switched to this service, I saw a visible improvement in the cleanliness of my whites. The detergent is hypoallergenic and smells wonderful. -- The best part is they will pick up & return laundry to your choice of location & it arrives in small stacks wrapped in paper so the stacks to not tip over. The folding quality is flawless! The owner is a very nice man with a good heart & I feel I happy about choosing his business. Another gentleman has also gone out of his way to expedite and deliver my dry cleaning when I forgot my request interfered with a travel date. I love alabasters. The delivery dude (Anwar) is the best and is so polite. My clothes smell nice :) However, I only gave them 4 stars because of two reasons. 1. Their prices went up from $1.00/lb to $1.25/lb which they didn't mention to me. 2. I've had a few things ruined in the past (when I think it was under different ownership) but not enough to seriously complain. AND for a while I too was getting strange white streaks on my clothes. I think this was while they were transistioning to a new soap. I haven't noticed the problem lately. read more

I had used Alabaster's services for over two years. Once or twice a month, about fifty, sixty pounds to two people, plus $20 - $30 dry cleaning. When I first found them I was in heaven. They have many good points; free delivery, free pick-up, friendly people. I really like them, as people, but as of the last five months or so, not so much as cleaners. I started noticing some slight beach blemishes on my towels, and, I'm no metrosexual, but I was a bit disturbed. Not enough to buy new towels mind you, but enough to mention it. That abated the problem for a while. But my whites weren't white. And they never got any better. The last straw was when I'd sent a brim out for dry cleaning. I wasn't dirty but I'd crumpled it up pretty badly- the kind of crumpling that the three blind mice couldn't miss. It cam back slightly more crumpled. More. I don't think that I should have to give explicit instructions for something so evident. Plus it cost me $4 for the extra wrinkles. read more

What's funny is that I lived around the corner from their store for five years and never realized they were a delivery laundry service, and now that I live ten blocks away, I find them on Yelp. My washer and dryer are in the basement, down a flight of very steep stairs. I tore the meniscus in my left knee and find the stairs very difficult, especially carrying anything. As a consequence, my laundry was piled to the ceiling. So I came to Yelp, searched for "service laundry," and saw a lot of good reviews for Alabaster. They deserve them. I've used them three times now, and my clothes are just so wonderfully clean and folded so well that I can now fit everything into my linen closet and drawers, whereas before, I had overflow into other closets and rooms. The price is affordable for me, and even the one time there was problem (for some reason my web reservation didn't go through), they raced over when I called, and got my laundry back to me -- same day! I came here for dry cleaning and mentioned that I was a first time customer and automatically received a discount off my entire order. Sweeeet! The turnaround was two days. Not Bad. My clothes were clean again after all those drunken nights! =) When I arrived to pick up my order I saw the famous Anwar and chatted with him for a bit. It's not that I hate doing laundry- I actually like it but I have a physical disability which makes routine stuff like laundry hard. I have plenty of offers from friends to help me but for some reason I feel too guilty to make them do my chores even though some of them swear they really want to. I've worked in housekeeping and retail before and I'm secretly a perfectionist in this one particular area of life... so I'm a little worried I'd accidentally melt down on on one of my do-gooder friends if something got folded imperfectly. Update 1/30/14 - they stopped service if you couldn't leave your clothes outside to be picked up and dropped off. So I switched to using Wash1 and have been super happy. Also Wash1 is cheaper. ----------------------- LOVE LOVE LOVE These guys. Hurt my ankle and couldn't walk at all. No laundry in my bldg and I couldn't walk to the laundromat. ALABASTER TO THE RESCUE. Seriously. Now that my ankle's better... I can go back to the laundromat. These guys are so great and it's so convenient. I call - they pick up. Deliver back anytime the next day. If I can get up early and they pick up by 7am - then I get my clothes back the same day. I'm allergic to fragrance and so they wash all my stuff fragrance free every time. Fold my clothes by category. Match my socks. All I do is put the clothes away. Reasonably priced, excellent service, and GREAT guys all around. Alabaster Cleaners is my savior. Well, my laundromat days are over! They pick it up, drop it off, use MY detergents. What more could you ask for? I am however, going to provide them with a key to my garage door as I found them not consistent with my requested pick-up and drop-off times. Who wants to wait around for an hour, never knowing when the doorbell will ring (makes it hard to get ready for work!)? And even though I ordered a 7 pm drop-off, they called at 6:40, when I was not home, and said they were in my neighborhood, then gave up. I think giving them the key will eliminate that issue. We have been using Alabaster for a couple of months now and can not rave enough about the service. The friendly delivery guy comes and takes our laundry once a week and brings it back a few days later (you can have next day if you want) all bundled up in beautiful blue paper ready to put straight back into the closet. We have senstive sin so opt for unscented detergent which has been just fine. And to have someone match your socks up for you I would pay for alone! They also do a pressing service which is expensive, but for times when you are really busy and ironing is the last thing you need, it is a godsend. It does feel indulgent to use this kind of service, but when you add up the time and effort it takes to haul everything back and forth to a laundrymat it is worth it. So until SF apartments catch up with Europe and come WITH a washing machine we will continue to use this service. read more

Our laundry area at home is broken. Some electric crap, and the ll still hasn't fixed it. So we ended up with 70 lbs of laundry and didn't know what (read: didn't want to deal w/ it) to do. Free pickup/delivery during the week (not the weekend), and in many cases, they've been able to pick up the same morning I've called.
