We first learned of Alan Smith Pools through our daughter and son-in law who had hired them to refurbish their pool. I was impressed by the quality of the work done and in the timely manner it was completed. So when we decided to have work done on our pool, we chose Alan Smith as well. What we had done wasn't too complicated or extensive; 200 ft of new border mastic, a pair of modern looking hand rails and new equipment to replace our thirty year old pump and an equally aged heater . Our program manager Jason Stewart, who also worked with our children looked at our filtration system and let us know it had years of service ahead, needing only periodic maintenance . This was a plus, I don't like to be oversold. A time line was agreed to and adhered to. We've noticed a marked reduction in both our electric and gas bills with the new equipment and appreciate that we can operate the pool from our smart phones. Finally , should you need follow up , it's there with a phone call. Our pool man or our pest control tech pulled wires loose leading to the pump from the controller and shut down the system. A call to Jason resulted in their plumbing and electrical manager (Patrick) coming out to personally get us up and running again. In the future, should we decide to do additional improvements to our pool/spa, we know who will do the work. Alan gave us all the info we needed to make the best decision, and did not pressure us into buying anything. My husband is very analytical, and must have time and lots of info to make a decision. Alan was patient and came back multiple times to answer all of our questions without any obligation to give him the job. We had 3 quotes and decided with Alan not because of the cost (although very comparable) but because we felt comfortable with Alan. Our trust paid off. Alan Smith Pool Plastering saved us on a pool deck that we were having issues with. We had sealed a hybrid concrete pool deck with a commercial sealer that made it slippery. There was discussion on replacing over 1,000 sq. ft. of tile because after several days of steam pressure washing and scrubbing with floor machines the slip hazard remained. Alan Smith himself came out and responded to a call on replacing the entire deck. He said that replacement was not needed and that we could rectify the problem. He then gave us the method to correct the slip hazard. But on top of that Alan did not even charge us for his time and potentially saved us tens of thousands of dollars. Stand up guy and a great company. I would not hesitate to call Alan Smith Pool Plastering on any new construction or remodeling of existing pool areas. read more

This is an interesting situation for me. I would love to give Alan Smith pools 5 stars because my pool is perfect. I'm thrilled with the pebble finish, the new tile, and the precast coping is exactly what my wife and I had hoped it would be. Along the way there were a couple of changes that needed to be made and they were made absolutely the way I hoped they would be. The one challenge that ended up taking away a star is some concrete work that was not done by their own in house crew. Alan Smith pools in-house team was spectacular and I believe they all know what is expected of them from Alan. If part of your job requires subcontractors not employed by Alan Smith just be sure that your superintendent is completely on top of what they are doing. As far as refurbishing a pool goes I would highly recommend Alan Smith pools. read more

Our pool was old, the tile was coming off, and there was terrible staining on the tile and plaster. Plus the equipment was old and needing repair. I asked around and everyone said Alan Smith Pools was the best company to use. No other company name was mentioned with a positive recommendation. And they were right. Every step was a positive experience. They were knowledgeable and explained things to me in a way I could understand and make reasonable decisions. Everyone I dealt with had a sense of professionalism, experience, and pride in their work. I never felt sales pressure. They worked with my budget. And everything was done right the first time. They came when they said they would, did what they said they would, and in the time they said they would. Their workmen worked quickly and neatly. I have intricate tile work that their worker took painstaking care to make sure was perfect. And my pool now heats up faster and is more economical to run. Alan Smith is not the cheapest. Our pool was a 1960 pool that was tired and in need of a complete makeover, plumbing, electrical, new plaster and new decking. Found Alan Smith through a local referral and we're very glad we did. Had 6 bids and Alan Smith was priced fair and right in the middle. Job started on time and communication from beginning to end with Alan, Ray our site supervisor and all the various crews was excellent. No problem with tweeking elements of the design as the project moved forward. Alan and Ray were very forthcoming with their ideas. Job took approximately 2 months, mainly because of the rain we got in January. Communication with the team was unbelievable. Every night after 6pm, we received an email informing us that a crew would be on the job the next day and what work to expect. To my amazement, the daily crews were not late one day. Always prompt, courteous, friendly and willing to stay a little longer when the job required it. The finished product is just, "nuts" and beyond our expectations. I called Alan Smith Pool Plastering to come take a look. Alan himself came to look and determined that this was the start of some delamination. He immediately took ownership of the problem and said it was covered under the warranty. He had CJ working with me throughout the process who made it very easy and painless. I would love to give 5 stars but have to be honest about some of the issues we had. Had pool/spa replastered last october. The pool looks beautiful, workmanship was spot on but the process of getting there was a real pain. The crew were always on time, worked hard and did a beautiful job. The problem started when my pool was being drained and received a frantic call from Don Applerose to tell me that the tile we chose was not available. It just wasnt in stock. Second problem.. a good portion of our brick coping needed to be reset. more than what we were quoted for so a change order was in place. After all coping was reset I noticed that there was a space between coping and cement.. I inquired with our pm Richard Leahy about this and he told me that it is an additional cost for that. I guess I just assumed when we receive a quote for this the job would be complete, not left with a big space around the pool that looked absolutely ridiculous. I had to laugh when Richard said that the (forgot his name)gentleman who was in charge of the "tile/coping crew" said that I would take care of the mastic. I never knew what mastic was before all of this. And why would I want to put mastic in myself???? they did end up filling the space with mastic. Third problem... Electrical. we were quoted to run a new jbox for our pool light. Don assured us "oh,,, no problem" Our pool light electrical cord was cut when another company tried to replace it and it was determined that we had a bad kink in the line so a new line would need to be established with new box etc. this was clearly stated to Don and he told us that his guys could do this etc etc. When Richard was over checking on progress he said to me ummm we have an issue with the pool light. something to do with the conduit possibly not properly fitiing, etc. May be another charge for this. blah blah blah.. Ok. am I crazy but I couldve sworn that Don took pictures of this, we clearly stated to him this issue, this is a pool building company.. forgive if I am being a irrational to expect that a pool company should know what they are up against. So after several phone calls and an unscheduled visit to the office manager from my husband we agreed to have an outside company County Leaks come out to assess the situation. Luckily Junior who is an absolute genius was able to break through the kink in the existing line and get the pool light working for a fraction of the cost. Fourth problem.. pool/spa is now full of water. we were running our spa and noticed that one of the jets wasnt working properly.. had our pool guys look at it, spent several hours trying to fix the issue with no luck. so we finally called ASP to come take a look. Jim "the aspirin bottle" who has been to our house several times already.. spent several hours trying to figure out the problem.. and nothing... so he decided to have County leaks come back out. Junior was stumped as well.. we were talking and as I looked at the jacuzzi I noticed that the water pattern of the jets seemed uneven??? Junior and I figured out that there should have been one more jet running.... YES... THEY PLASTERED OVER AN EXISTING JET! this was the icing on the cake... Jim came out and fixed the issue and all is fine now. During all of this not once did we receive a call/email/letter/visit from Don Applerose or anyone else at the office. My husband actually called Dave the office manager and was given the old "well Im sorry we didnt live up to your expectations" Yes everything was fixed to our liking, the pool looks beautiful but maybe a sincere apology would have helped through the frustrating times. I just felt that they just really didnt care that our project was completed with our full satisfaction. We really felt like a thorn in their side. I am thankful to Jim for listening to my rants of frustration. He was really helpful. Richard Leahy was nice enough, he seemed a bit inexperienced and in the end was just a "yes man" One side note.. during this pool project we were also undergoing a full kitchen remodel. The kitchen remodel was effortless compared to the pool remodel. we have referred several friends to our contractors.. we have been asked several times who did our pool but I could not recommend ASP without hesitancy. would not want anyone to go through what we did. read more

Previous Review: We are currently in the process of installing a pool and spa with Alan Smith Pools. Prior to choosing Alan Smith we received 3 other bids. Alan Smith price was fair and we decided to use them because of the excellent customer service. Or so we thought! Fast forward to today. The last time anyone from Alan Smith was at our job was to pour the shotcrete 4 weeks ago. The next phase to be completed is the coping and stacked stone around the spa. Our project schedule had those listed to commence the following week on 4/21. As of today we still have not had anyone show up to install the coping. Look, I get it, schedules change and dates move around but that's where communication should come in. What's the point in having a project manager if they don't follow up on changes with the schedule/job. Our particular project coordinator has never answered the phone when I call and very rarely will return text messages (and when he does its days later). Once we finally do hear from him (which is usually days after we reach out) he has communicated a new date for the coping but when that date rolls around no one shows up and we hear crickets once again from him. The date has now moved 4 times and we still have yet to have anyone show up! I have called the office twice to try and get any information possible (since my project coordinator pretty much completely ignores me) and can't seem to get anywhere with that approach either. As of now I am so completely frustrated and disappointed in the lack of customer service from this company. If you want to be ignored and kept in the dark during your job than Alan Smith is your company. I'm sure once all is said and done we will have a beautiful pool but a company is only as good as their weakest link and that's why I give 2 stars. Beware! read more

I think the people at ASP sit around and HOPE that their business works out. Mondays and Fridays seem to be dedicated to "figuring out the schedule" so don't expect anyone to work on these days. They don't work Saturdays. That leaves 3 workdays, and generally it's all left up to HOPING someone shows up. HOPING on our side, HOPING on their side. I find this a strange way to run a business. We have a large pool (they all seem to comment on this) Maybe it's too big for them? All i can figure out is that they either don't have the expertise to manage their business or they don't have the crews to actually do the work- i do not really care what the reason is- according to them, they are never at fault...but literally days go by with no one working, then someone shows up, works part of one day and we het HOPEFUL again. Don't be fooled, this small amount of work will be followed again by days of no work. This has been an exercise in patience causing significant angst and unfortunately I can never recommend this company. Our pool is not yet done- i have lost HOPE. One reviewer said "utterly useless"...i second this and can hardly wait until this company is out of my life- one can only HOPE the workmanship will be better than the process...stay tuned read more

I would not recommend Alan Smith Pools! we had such a bad experience with them. Our pool was to be retiled and new quartz plaster put in, we started the process with them a year ago march said it would take 3 weeks to complete but the work was not done until 3 months later. We knew something was wrong with the quartz that it had not been done right when it was to be a dark bottom pool but had huge streaks of white every it looked worse then my previous dark bottom plaster pool. They tried to blame it on the rock waterfall then they tried to blame my pool guy for the treatment but they were the only ones who ttreated it. We had a option to either let our pool guy do it or them we choose them thank goodness they couldn't put it off on him. It took 3 months for them to finally come and completely redo the plaster after numerous phone calls and letters. It has been over a year now and the grey drain covers they put on are peeling off and white is showing thru and the plaster still does't look right extremely disappointed in their work, but also believed that Alan Smith was a man of integrity but fell short in my estimation. rose tustin,ca read more

We used Alan Smith Pools for a complete pool, deck and patio remodel. On a positive note, our backyard looks beautiful. However, what started out as an 8 week project in May is still not complete. So unless you are a really patient person, I wouldn't start a project with them. They over book. Their customer service is a nightmare. Our project manager was great, but he could only do so much and since water has gone into the pool, he's disappeared. So the finishing work that needs to be done is still waiting with no end in sight. For this reason, we are very disappointed in Alan Smith Pools and would not recommend them to anyone at this point. read more

Alan Smith pools did a terrific job on my pool/jacuzzi re-plaster. Mr. Smith personally came out to review the condition of my pool, make recommendations and write the proposal, with several options, all of which were discussed. Communication from the company was excellent for every aspect of the work, with regular calls re: scheduling and follow-up calls. The workers showed up mostly right on-time and delivered consistently as promised, and the finished product is like a brand new pool. The only holdback I have was that the final clean-up was not up to my standard, but to their credit, the company did come back out on my request to better complete the clean-up. Overall, I had a terrific experience with this company... I know they have been in the business for decades, and have earned the right to be the 'go-to' company for all things related to pool and spa. read more

After 20 years, it was time to refresh the pool area. We contacted 4 companies of which two told us that they were not bidding new business at the time due to current business on the books. ASP had a good reputation from our pool man, they were quick at returning calls as well as Jeff was prompt and straight forward during the sales visit. The crews were very professional and cleaned up pretty well after each stage (they did have a finish up guy come out after all was done that cleaned up the small details / debris that remained). They are more expensive than other bids but very good quality work. The 4 star is due to scheduling and time to completion as the job took over twice as long as estimated (a few no shows on days where we were notified they would be here) along with observation that only one crew would show up each week (taking a day or two to finish their step and then nobody else the rest of the week). It was impossible to get a revised time line from the project managers as all they would tentatively provide is guesstimate for the next couple of days read more

Update: Alan Smith Pools contacted me concerning this review and apologized for the mis-understanding. They indicated they should have disclosed all charges/estimates up front and were gracious enough to reimburse us for the cost of pulling the permits. I felt that this was a good compromise and we are now much happier with them and would definitely recommend them to others. Overall, the workmanship was very good. What was lacking was full disclosure over what was involved and worse yet, what the true cost of the job was going to be. Their quote looked good, and they did say that we would have to reimburse them for whatever the city charged for permits. However, after we paid in full, they presented us with a bill of almost $600 to pull those permits and a couple of weeks later, another invoice came for over $700 for more work. Maybe all of those charges were justified, but then, they were not add-ons or extra to the original bid, so why did they not just quote those items up front - kind of deceptive, if you ask us. If they always charge for all of these things, put them in the initial bid or at least estimate them so you know what the true cost of your job is going to be. We've had friends use them in years past and this type of behavior did not occur, so it is a bit disconcerting that they have changed their business practices. read more

I will start out to say that we had a good experience with them 7 years ago when we had the pool installed. However, they dropped the ball when it came to repairs. They do not return phone calls, and they do not clean up after themselves. Instead of cleaning up the debris from the pool, they vacuumed it to our filter which caused it to stop working (a substantial amount of debris). They refused to help fix the filter that broke due to their job and supposed "clean up". If you use them, do not rely on customer service. They do not care and they cashed our check that we gave them a day too early because we trusted them. Do not pay them until the entire job is completed. read more

I received daily email updates and calls to inform me of progress and next steps throughout. The office staff and project managers responded quickly and pleasantly in communications. I needed to have my spa re-plastered. I got 4 quotes. Alan Smith Pool Plastering was not cheap, but also not the most expensive. I went with them because I had a good feeling from the conversations: promptly answered my questions, gave me good advice that actually saved me money and pointed me to the pebble color that was exactly what I wanted. They were booked out for a few weeks, but that's a good sign that they are busy because they do a good job. I was really happy with the process from start to finish. They completed the work on schedule with no hitches at all. The end product is a beautiful mini pebble spa. read more

It's tough to give this company a good review. In my opinion, 2 stars is being generous. If I were to write the complete version of how many issues we've experienced this review would be 10 pages long. The short version is we did a complete make over of our pool, spa, decking, concrete, and patio cover. Project was started in Nov 2016 and was stated to be completed in Feb 2017. They finished in June 2017. Yes there was three weeks of rain during this time but would think that we would just be month or two extra to complete our project. Very poor communication between the sales person and the working crew. Salesman forgot to make changes to renderings and contracts. (he never wrote anything down during his in house meetings to discuss issues). I would only recommend you use them for their pool work only. The concrete work (already cracked after 2 months), pavers and drainage completely uneven, patio cover sold without a completed top (patio cover electrical work needed to be re-done by my own electrician). The pool was completed with new plumbing, tiles, and resurfaced with pebble tech. We paid to have the spa enlarged and was designed to be round and raised 18 inches. Came home from work to a new square flat spa. They forgot to look at the plans and renderings before doing the work. To their credit they offered to tear it down and redo or gave us credit to add a baja bench.(reason for the second star) After all said and done the pool is the only thing that added the other star. DO NOT use them for anything other than the pool. Get your own contractors for any decking, landscaping, or patio cover work. read more
