The foreman would answer your questions and explain what they were doing. They left the pool area like they found it, clean. They put plastic sheeting down on the driveway and street so no oil drips or materials would stain and cleaned up everything very well. Alan Smith Pools has a project manager for every project. Mr. Rusty Peterson was the onsite project manager. He was there every step of the way. He met me the first day when they were removing the plaster and tile. Rusty is a courteous, knowledgeable and a true professional in pool construction. He is a bright, articulate BYU graduate. He explained every step of the way and ensured I was completely satisfied with each phase of the project. He assisted me when the city building inspector came to sign off on the permit. From quote to completion, I really have no complaints. The job was done in the timeframe they quoted, for less dollars than quoted, thank you to the project manager for his honesty and the finished pool looked exactly as I had hoped it would. We had 3 estimates to resurface and reconfigure our pool and Allen Smith came in with the best bid and also came up with a good plan on making our pool shallower, repiping and adding a baja shelf. He was recommended to us by a friend who was also very pleased with his service. We also changed out the tile at the water line and went with a pebble tec instead of plaster. They were prompt, got the job done in the time they estiimated. They worked with us on picking the color of the pebble tec and even arranged for us to see some of their customers finished pools. We recently had our pool refurbished by Alan Smith Pools and it was a very good experience. We initially received quotes from 3 companies and selected Alan Smith because the price was fair and the sales experience was much better with them than the other two companies. Choosing a company for a big job like this can be stressful but they spent a lot of time discussing options and making suggestions regarding material choices etc. That helped put us at ease. The other companies just dropped off some brochures and that was about it. During construction they always kept us informed on what was going on and were happy to answer our endless questions. When we encountered the weirdness inevitable in a remodel everything was handled quickly and professionally. In the end we got a beautiful pool that we will enjoy for many years to come. We were very impressed with the entire Alan Smith team, starting with James Cawthorne who did our estimate and informed us of every step along the way. Unfortunately, the team exposed some shoddy work when they removed the old plaster and tile and had to complete additional repairs prior to installing any new tile, etc. The estimate and additional work was able to be completed by the next day in order to keep the project on time. In fact, the original estimate for both the pool and spa was 3 - 5 weeks, and all work was done in less than 3 weeks. This company is not as good as they seem from dealing with the sales staff. They do not show up to make progress for weeks on end. We have had stuff taken out of our garage without asking. Came home to tools left out in our front yard and workers were gone for the day. My wife came home one day to our garden hose streched out across our drivway and out into the street where they left it after using it and went home for the day. They would tell us they would be here then not show up till a week later and never let us know that the schedule had changed. They damaged a new wall that we put in then said they could not fix it. After inspection it took us calling them to get the pool finished and filled. After that we told the project manager about some things that needed to be corrected then they disappeared with no contact. 6 weeks later after we send a email out to the management they finally want to fix it. They still have issues to fix. We have not had our pool all summer cause of there poor scheduling and its been 3 months since they got there final and we still are not completed. My daughter wanted to have a pool party this summer and was not able too. Its been 9 months since this happeded. read more

I had my pool replastered and i used Alan Smith because of their no jackhammer system. In a matter if a few hours, the pool was cleanly stripped of its old plaster and the new plastering had begun. .they had several choices of pebble tech to choose from. The best was that everything went along in perfect schedule. Each crew did their thing in perfect coordination with the crew for the next step. Months later I had a small issue with one of the tiles. We interviewed a lot of companies before selecting Alan Smith Pools. Although they were not the lowest bid, we went with them because of their experience, positive reviews, proprietary processes, high-quality craftsmanship, and superior selection of materials. Although they were mostly very communicative, they did go dark on us for a few weeks as they were scheduling different crews (I'm sure a very challenging task) and it would have been good for them to keep us posted during that time, but, other than that, they are amazing and we highly recommend them for your pool. Before doing my remodel my pool guy told me to get a bid from Alan Smith Pools and said if the price was even close to my other bids, use them. I heard from him and several others that they were the best in the business. The pricing was in line with the other bids I got so I chose to move forward with them. I was extremely impressed with every aspect of the project. Project Manager CJ was on site every day to explain what would be happening and what to expect that day and answer any questions that I had. One of the most impressive aspects was how every worker was a specialist. I didn't see the same crews over and over again, they have a specific crew for each aspect of the project. We called the company to have a pool built and met with Sean. He said he couldn't start the job for a month and told us he'd call us in 4-5 weeks with our drawing. After 6 weeks, we heard nothing so I called to make an appointment and find out the status. Sean was not available so I left a message. After 1 1/2 weeks, there was no call back, so I called again. A week later, still no call. I would never use this company, if this is how the treat their customers before the work even begins!!!! We recently used Alan Smith Pool to resurface our Pebble Tek pool. They did a spectacular job designing the changes to the beach entry to so that pebble tee was not exposed above water. Our pool was 20 years old and all the pebble ten above the water line was cracking. Their design used tile above the water line and the beach entry had some faux rocks that really came out great. This company was highly recommended by our pool guy and all we wanted to do was add a handrail to our spa. So I called to get a quote and spoke to the young lady who answered the phone she told me her manager stated a minimum just to come out would be $850. I didn't want a solid gold handrail all I wanted was a simple handrail installed. The manager then called me back and proceeded to tell me that's what they charge its normally $1,500 as a minimum. The worst pools company on earth. They do nice finish work but they used a electrical connection on a return water line. After they re did the hole pool we where losing water every day. Had to fill the pool every day was about 2 inch down. Called them up they sent a company out to find the leak and they said it was in a pipe they didn't touch. So called our pool man and he digged up and said and showed us it was where they put on the ball on the wall they shaved the pipe down and put on a electrical connection and it was leaking so bad. It cost us $6300 dollars to repair. They said they could do nothing or could help us. It's probably not Allen smiths pools but a sub they used but still has there name on it. And there electrical contractor isn't not nice and is full of his self. Would not use them again. Like i send the work they did themself was very nice but what there subs did makes a bad name for them. Our pool was probably installed in the mid to late 80's, and after having some one acid wash the pool, the plaster looked like the moon, with craters big and small all over. The tile was old, brown and in bad shape. We started looking for a company to redo the plaster and tile, and needed to get it done by the beginning of June because one of our Granddaughters is getting married in June, and some of the wedding activities were to take place at our home. We needed a company we could trust, and one that possessed the experience and integrity to get the job done right, and inside our timeline by early June. We noticed Alan Smith Pools early on and saw that they had numerous and very good reviews over a long period of time. We called and met Rob Penticoff, one of Alan Smith's Remodeling Specialists. Rob came to see us and listened to our problem and our needs within our time frame. Rob did an outstanding job of helping us through the process, including helping select the tile for the pool. One of the important things we learned was that Alan Smith Pools does not use subcontractors. We were then introduced to John Palmieri who would be our Project Manager. John was very responsive to every question or issue always responding our our emails quickly. After engaging Alan Smith Pools, the work began shortly thereafter. This company uses skilled teams for each stage of the process, and the men on these teams were competent and focused on completing their part of the job on schedule or early. The entire Alan Smith team was focused on our need to finish the job no later than early June. They did even better, and finished our pool early! It was completed on May 3rd! If there was less than 1 star, that's what I would give to Alan Smith Pools... We were excited to start...then, they started, removing the old plaster, and we waited and waited. About 3-4 weeks later they eventually began the replaster. We were horrified when we got home to find they had moved all of our potted plants to use as anchors to hold the plastic over the pool as it was filled with water. Not only that, they used our small plants and other items around our yard to tie off their ropes. The topper was finding our dog's poop bucket emptied on the side of the house, filled with plaster to be used as an anchor as well. Phone calls, emails, text messages sent expressing our disappointment and frustration. Apology, apology but nothing really done. Then, we find that there is plaster and debris all over the yard including our walls, roof, concrete deck and plants. Another call, apology, apology, and again, nothing really done. As the pool is being filled, we find that it is our responsibility to monitor the water level and then fill the spa. After it was filled we notified ASP to begin water treatment. It sat for over a week with nothing done til the spa began turning green! Once again, calls, emails, texts, sent. Apology, apology...nothing done. Finally, they begin water treatment. We are on second to the last day when a worker shows up with what I was guessing were the eyeballs to be installed in the spa only after our request. Imagine our surprise when he corrects me and informs me that he is here for an initial water treatment!! WHAT?! What kind of communication is going on with this company! None. We finally paid them their last installment and my husband is finishing the last items including re-wiring the spa and pool lights that one of their workers decided to disconnect. WE STRONGLY DISCOURAGE YOU FROM INVESTING IN ALAN SMITH POOLS. If after reading this review, you still decide to use this company, I strongly suggest you do not allow John Dakota or Darryl Reuter to work on your job...unless you want to hear "I'm sorry" over and over. read more

Initially did not intend to write a review, but after giving it some thought and reading other reviews, I feel compelled to share my Alan Smith Pool story with hopes that it might improve the experience of others considering this company. Not only is pool work expensive, it is something that we expect to last and when we have problems (as others have expressed), we call the same people who did the work to fix the problem and eventually we accept their word as a professional... regardless of whether it is repaired as warranty or we incur additional charges.... and based on their time in business and all the great things ASP says about themselves, we expect good things from them - but alas, don't be fooled (as I was). Went almost 20 years with our initial pool construction before needing a re-plaster. In January 2008 we selected ASP for a complete pool and spa makeover using their recommended Gemstone finish. Although we had a couple of issues (including a color problem) all was resolved amicably in 2008. Skip forward 8 years... plaster was eroding with chips coming loose on the entry steps and along side pool seat ledges - plus there were a couple of hairline cracks on the step and ledge walls. ASP did inspect and agree to a warranty repair in the problem areas. Two years later the problems reappeared, worse than before, but are no longer covered by warranty. Rather than accept their word, we explored other options and after numerous bids (including one from ASP), we learned we had a rebound issue in the plaster and to make a long story short, elected to do an entire plaster removal and pool refinish. This time we did not select ASP. Final chapter - we selected another reputable contractor and in removing the plaster the rebound problem was confirmed in multiple areas, but to our surprise, the rebound issue was not limited to ASP's work --no, some of the plaster deterioration was from our original pool construction some 30 years earlier!! ASP had simply covered over parts of the original plaster we paid them to remove and reapply. How do we know? Well, the original steps and seats had 1x1 inch tiles along the edges and sections of the 1x1 tiles were still there and had to be removed from under the ASP work!! So forget their specialized water jetting process because it didn't get anywhere close to the base Gunite. Last but not least, the new plaster removal also found the spa jet that ASP said wasn't there 14 years ago... Yes, although they denied it wasn't possible, we now have use of the spa jet ASP blocked during their re-plaster job in 2008. So buyer beware --- ASP may be a good company with good intentions, but I submit they will only be as good as you make them.... take good notes and watch their work, because I trusted in them and later found that my trust was misplaced. read more

So we were given lots of good recommendations for Alan Smith and the sales guys Mike was very good an thorough but that's where everything ended. Once the work began there was absolutely no communication, workers showed up whenever they wanted and no updates were given. Our PM was completely absentee. I reached out several times to my sales guy and then the GM of the company and similar to another review they said "we dropped the ball and are so sorry" but no changes were made. I paid 3700 dollars to have my rocks painted and there guy was a rank amateur and had to redo them several times. Still they look terrible (under no circumstance) use them for rock painting. They finally assigned a PM after we were 75% done. He did his best but still the customer service was horrrendous. After the job was done no follow up, no making sure things were to our satisfaction. We paid 22k for this job and I have never had customer service so bad. Buyer beware. BTW the response they gave was untrue. The project started in April and Ended in May. Little follow up was done if any, spa remote broker 30 days after install and lightning has worked right. These guys are definitely not the company they used to be. read more

My experience with Alan Smith was not great. After to getting several bids to re-plaster our pool, we chose Alan Smith Pool. At that time we were assured that it would take two weeks to complete the job. We were very happy with the timing as they started almost immediately after the contract was signed, The demo of our pool was complete within a day. From that point it did not go well. The following day the inspection of the pool found cracks in the gunite that required attention. The following day we made the decision to have our pool slurry coated as opposed to the recommended $11,000 in repairs. Within three days the slurry coat team was out to work on our pool. After another two weeks and several phone calls to the office, the tile crew came out to work on the pool. Everything at that point came to a grinding halt. After another week of a unusable pool, we made several attempts to find out when the job would be complete. Several phone calls were made and either there was no response or told not to worry that we were very soon in line. It seems to me that this is really poor customer service when the customer has to call several times and gets either blown off or calls not returned. We were finally so frustrated with the lack of communication that we emailed the owner, Alan Smith, Of course no response. After another two weeks the plaster crew finally came in to finish the job. It took another two weeks for a crew to come out to repair the coping around the pool. The job finally was finished after two months. I understand Alan Smith Pool is a very big company and have several customers and crews working specific jobs in specific locations. However, communication was so poor with this company and the frustration level was so high that I really felt I needed to write this review. read more

Alan Smith Pools - Five Stars, After deciding to re-plaster and update our thirty-year-old pool, we began looking for companies to do the work. We obtained 3 bids for the project. Alan Smith was awarded the project with a very competitive quote and excellent reviews from satisfied customers. We wanted to get started right away, however we elected to delay the start date for about 6 months. Alan Smith Pools was very accommodating in getting us rescheduled at later date. Once we started the project, I couldn't be happier with the results. One of the deciding factors was Alan Smith Pools using their own employees to do all the work. From the very start of the demo, and throughout the process to completion, their workmanship customer service was excellent. Everyone involved from Alan Smith Pools were courteous, professional, and knowledgeable with their role in the project. They also cleaned up everything in our yard at the end of each day. The most important thing to me was the excellent communication of what is going to happen each step of the way. As a project manager myself, I was very impressed with the scheduling and communication throughout the project. The scope of our project was to re-plaster and update our sports pool and spa. Specifically, demo and replace the plaster, tile, drains, pool lights, and re-grout existing brick around the pool. Overall, Alan Smith Pools did an outstanding job in meeting, and in many cases exceeding, our expectations. We are very happy with the results and enjoying our newly updated pool and spa. We received a nice looking pool in the end. That's what the 3 stars are for. However getting there was less than a stellar experience. The missing two stars are for customer service. We never knew day to day if workers would be at the house; scheduling left a lot to be desired and the process dragged out well past the expected timeline. We also selected materials that did not work well for our pool shape - I would expect that our salesperson would have given us information before purchase on the material we selected for our particular pool shape. This isn't our field of expertise, so I expect a little bit of handholding, which we didn't receive. In the end it all worked out, but it created a big headache once the workers saw our stone for the coping and figuring out how to cut it to work for a curved pool. Additionally, they did not detect a leak in our pool, despite having replaced all of our equipment (minus the pool heater) and resurfacing our entire pool. So now we have a beautiful leaking pool. I had a pool re-plastered almost eight years ago. To this day (6/9/17) the pool looks as good as the day it was completed. I had several quotes back then and there was a price range and Alan Smith Pools was not the least but I felt comfortable with these guys as they were very professional. When I'd come home at the end of the day you barely knew anyone had worked there as the yard was always cleaned up. I emailed first to setup an appt. for a quote on remodeling my pool. I didn't hear back after a few days. Then, I sent a 2nd email. I did hear back from a lady. She asked what kind of pool I had. This, after I had told which kind of pool I had. Then her follow-up emails to me stated what Alan Smith Pool did not do. Since communications can get misconstrued by email, I decided to call their office. When I called a male answered the tel. and screened my phone call. He told me female I was looking for was not at her desk, etc. This, after she had just sent me an email. Then, not even a minute after placing this call, I get a caller-ID call back from this female clerk. This person was not helpful and was unprofessional and unfriendly. Overall, she told me what Alan Smith Pool did not do instead of what they did do. I had never had a prospective company this negative. This, while I was only trying to get more information and to have someone provide a bid for a pool remodel. I couldn't believe what I was experiencing from this person. All this while I wasn't even yet their customer. I had carefully read all the wonderful written reviews here at Yelp. I did learn not to trust the reviews. Clearly this person provided me poor customer service in email and over the telephone. It's nice to have office staff cover other members of the same staff. Surely smart readers will see through this experience. Clearly I explained I wasn't looking for work on a fiberglass pool. I have a fiberglass pool which I wanted to get rid of was what I related in two separate emails. It's fine. This company will continue to be the great customer-service company it is. Alan Smith Pools does do a good job and my pool looks great. The customer service with this company is lacking and so is their attention to details. Alan Smith came out to take the measurements of the pool. He did not do a thorough inspection. Once my pool was finish I noticed I was losing a lot of water due to my piping and filter. Things that I knew Alan had looked at. 2000 dollars later they were refinished by another company. During the pool resurfacing, I would get a call the day before any work, which was nice. They were on time and were quick. The only issue was during the construction of my solar panels. There was an issue with inspections and I would not hear from them for weeks at a time. I didn't know where we were in the process and I found I was being charged by HB for re inspections for screw ups Allan's company made. Totaling my estimated 300-600 inspection fees to 800 dollars. I think my major issue with this is not being told how inspections were going. Living with a ditch in my backyard for months on end. I am a novice when it comes to caring and cleaning a pool. I had already hired a pool guy, but Allan's team began the treatment for the pool. Before checking any of the filters or equipment, they began using the pump and filter. White particles filled my pool due to the poor condition of my filter. I did not know the condition of the filter and was amazed Allan's team did not check this before turning on the pumps. Luckily for me I was able to talk to someone about replacing the filter and was able to do this myself. I had to fix the issue they had created from not advising me of this possible problem. I like Allan and his company. Everyone was very nice and professional. As a new pool owner though I thought I would be advised of things that might need to be done before my pools work was finished. After all the hiccups, my pool is finished and my family is enjoying it thoroughly. The only thing I am still trying to find out is the rebates Allan claimed I could get by installing my solar panels is true. From looking on line with SCE I have only found that there is no funding for this rebate. I hope this is not true but another claim Allan had made about getting a loan for my project was found to be false. We had our pool renovated last year by them and am thoroughly underwhelmed. It looks fine, however, there are so many things they missed and failed on that two stars is being generous. Our project manager was terrible to work with...zero communication and so unprofessional. The company in general is very poorly run and working with them was not enjoyable. I had our pool re-plastered and re-tiled by Alan Smith Pools in 2013. Over the course of the last five years the quartz has become spotted everywhere and the finish is poor. It never had a sparkle like the samples we saw. Starting in early July I have called four times and have emailed twice regarding a warranty inspection. I have yet to receive a call back to schedule an inspection. I have been told by two other pool companies that it requires an acid wash. Since it is under warranty I can do nothing to it until Alan Smith Pools inspects and hopefully rectifies the issue. read more

A friend of ours recently did a pool remodel so when my wife and I decided to re-model our pool, we decided to get a bid from Alan Smith Pools. Alan came to our house within two days of my initial call, and i liked him and he seemed to know what he was talking about. The research I did on them seemed to be all positive so we decided to go with them without getting any other bids. Well, I can only say that the whole process was an absolute pleasure from start to finish. At every stage of the job, I received phone calls from the manager on the job, daily emails telling me what the next step was and who would be at our house the next day and what time. At no time did I not know what was going on, and the work crew were on time every day, and they even cleaned up the yard every day. From our visit to the showroom to pick out materials, all the way through to the final inspection, everything went like clockwork.
