(Posted on behalf of my parents - they do not Yelp but felt their experience needed to be heard, to help others be informed of what they may get into with Alan Smith Pool service). My wife and I had decided to have our swimming pool redone, and it involved re-plastering, re-tiling and replacing the concrete deck. We contacted several local companies and decided to sign a contract with Alan Pools. They appeared to be the best choice because of their length of service record, size of the company, the local office and display area. We were impressed by their punctuality and sticking to promised and scheduled times. We were very impressed by the craftsmanship of their personnel, and the efficiency of how the work was planned and executed. It seemed that their very "substantial" asking price of $48,573.00 would be a good investment after all. The plastering and tiling looked beautiful. The problems started when the concrete decking began. We were told that it had to be done in two sections and on two separate days. When the first section (the border) was poured, we were disappointed that the color was off and the sparkle non-existent. We were told that it was very difficult to match perfectly and that this was the best they could do. Then, when the the rest of the decking was poured the next day, it did not match what was poured the day before and was even duller and more off-color from what we had agreed upon. Unbelievable. Again I was told that it was extremely difficult or impossible to match the other concrete (with today's technology???) I could not believe this. I certainly was not told that before we began. I should not have accepted it and had them tear it out and do it over again but was offered a rebate compensation. Unfortunately I accepted that and tried to live with it. Within a year the real trouble started. The white plaster in the pool started to look like the pool had not been cleaned for weeks. The pool cleaning company I had hired was the one Alan Pools had highly recommended as the best there was. When they investigated the problem, they concluded that something was wrong with the plaster and identified the specific cause. However, when Alan Pools was notified and sent their "expert" to review, they (not unexpectedly) claimed that it was the fault of the pool cleaning company and the local water. Strangely enough, my neighbors (who are serviced by the same pool cleaning company and deal with the exact same water), have no problems, nor did I ever have any with my 30 year old plaster. Acting as if it had not been their fault but that it was my problem and my responsibility, Alan Pools offered to re-plaster the pool for a mere $5,250.00!! Again, unbelievable. There is no other remedy for the dirty looking plaster than to replace it. Then the next, even worse problem occurred. The concrete deck started to go white after any rain or water got on the concrete. This made the deck really look terrible. I can spray-wash the deck and it will look clean, but shortly thereafter or any time after a rain or water gets on it, it comes right back. Nowhere else does the concrete around my house have this problem or has ever had it. See attached photos. Their response to this disaster was a recommendation that I have a concrete company do a thorough blasting of the deck and then seal it. This would cost me several thousands of dollars according to some quotes. This is really an unbelievably arrogant response after having spent $48,000 with these people. The other concrete sections around my house (driveway, front walkway, etc.) are over 30 years old and look far superior than this "new" deck ever did. I wish I had never heard of Alan Pools. My advice to people looking to build or re-build a pool, would be better off to never hear of Alan Pools either. read more

The communication with this company has been terrible. They don't have an organized system and they don't even know who their hiring and sending out to do their projects. No follow up whatsoever. They were supposed to install our light and ended up breaking our light system and now they want to charge us more for the damage they've done and also because they are unable to install the light? Ludicrous. They waited for the pool to be filled with water and then tell us this after. We've asked for a refund and waiting for that payment now. It's honestly been a huge disappointment since we've gone with this company to plaster our pool. I would recommend to not go with this company and do your due diligence in researching around. I want to Thank the whole crew at Alan Smith Pools from Bridget making sure that I'm well aware of the time line of my order for my well needed new handrails. C J the supervisor for the installers that came out to my house several times with different models of handrails to make sure we get the "Perfect" handrails before installation. He was very patient & professional during this process. Then his crew came out to installed the handrails and they were very kind and knew exactly every step of the process to make sure the handrails were installed perfect. Then even over beyond there amazing installation one of the installation crew came out the next day after they wanted the concrete to be completely dry they sweeper up and watered down any sand or dirt they thought might be around so it wouldn't get in the pool. I want to start off by saying, the finished product is beautiful, however, the process and dealing with this company was headache after headache. Communication was not great/almost non existent. The only time we'd hear anything from them was when they wanted to send a bill. The project manager did not have the best customer service skills and honestly came off as rude and cocky from the start. The workers tried to cut corners, and didn't listen to some initial requests, which they ultimately ended up having to take off and redo a few times as I was not going to let them get away with subpar work. They did not fully clean up after themselves. The pebble tek machine they used to fill the pool exploded in front of our garage, which they ended up having to fix, and clean up a large portion of our street. Several neighbors had pebble tek on the side of their houses which had to be cleaned off. I'm still to this day finding multiple pebble tek remnants surrounding the dirt by the pool and other parts of our yard and furniture. It was just a mess. If we ever have to update our pool again, we will be looking at a different company for the work. read more

Per Jeff Smiths post of 12-16-21 (Numbered items are Jeff's list) 1. Alan Smith Pools performed scope of contract for client Did you? A few examples of the failure to complete the scope: A. Over 10' of a long brick step was agreed to be re-bonded. There is still over 6' that is hollow and needs to be removed and replaced. B. Plaster removal exposed PVC of the spa and concerned me and the superintendent, who said a pressure test would be done prior to plaster. It was never done, and I still believe there was damage done to the piping. C. Our Sheer Descent was NOT installed per manufacturers requirements, and because the required filters were not installed and the water is drawn from the bottom of the pool (not from the side per the manufacturer), our waterfall constantly plugs up with debris. D. The pebble finish is raised above the tile along dozens of feet, and the raised pebbles scrape skin off and tears bathing suits. COO Scott Raze said ASP would "polish" the pebble finish. On October 3 2019, COO Scott Raze in an email response, offered to do a pressure test, and said (in regards to the pebble finish), "I will open a quality assurance, and we will send an expert out to determine if it is within industry standards." I accepted both offers. ASP did nothing about it for over a year, which prompted the court case. Two contractors actually saw the poor workmanship and said that "polishing" could not be done. 2. Client not satisfied I tried for over a year to get ASP to come and LOOK at their work performed. NO ONE from ASP ever came to our home. It's impossible for you to make claims when you have NO idea what your work looks like. Would YOU be satisfied? 3. Alan Smith Pools offers resolution COO Scott Raze offered many things, but did NOTHING. Again, THAT is why I took ASP to court. For doing nothing. 4. Client does not agree to resolution Again, said "resolution" was in an email from Scott, which I accepted, yet NOTHING was ever done. So there was in fact NO resolution. I took ASP to court with the understanding the rough finish could be "polished", per Scott Raze. Two contractors said the only way to "fix" the work ASP performed was to remove and replace the tile and the plaster. Because I was lied to about the way to resolve the issue, the costs awarded by the court will not cover tile/plaster removal and replacement. BUT IT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE ASP 10 YEAR WARRANTY! 5. Settlement negotiated in court Yes, after ASP dragged us back into court two more times trying to prove ASP was not at fault. And what did the final judge say? "Alan Smith did not handle this matter in a professional manner." 6. Alan Smith Pools paid settlement amount to cover any current and future claims client might have (Over $9000) The funds received were NOT for future claims, NOR effecting warranty work. But ASP STILL refuses to even LOOK at their work. 7. Client not happy after receiving monies When a contractor leaves your pool in worse condition than before you paid the $30,000, would YOU be happy? 8. Client files complaint with contractors board and bonding company Yes, I did, to go after the Bond in order to get the funds needed to remove and replace the tile/plaster from a SUBSTANDARD INSTALLATION. 9. Contractors board and bonding company investigate claims and finds claims unfounded The claims were NOT unfounded! It was decided that going after the bond would be in effect trying the case twice. CSLB AND the Bonding company AGREED with me, but cited cases that prevented my complaint being awarded. On top of all this, you, Jeff, Scott Raze, Superintendent Darryl, and even Alan Smith himself, spoke untruthfully about so many things, in email, in court filings and appeals, and even here on Yelp. Honesty would have gone a long way in resolving this. We're two months shy of 3 years of this disaster, and not ONE person at ASP has come to our home to speak to us and deal with this on a professional level. read more

Our pool is amazing now and beautiful thanks to Allen Smith Pools. The 22 year old pool needed an update having spa plaster falling apart, beach entry falling apart and a deck that was flagstone( chipping away). ASP was our 4th and final bid. Jason Stewart was our sales guy and he spent so much time with me explaining everything. He was very thorough with his measurements, estimate and always available for questions. I liked that ASP had a showroom to look at samples of every kind of building material. Jason walked us thru the process and was even available on a Saturdays for us! When I wanted to look at more samples of stone Jason would help me with that. Paver samples were dropped off on our driveway asap after our appointment. We were put on the waitlist for an earlier start date if anything became available. Jason called us with good news and we started 3 months before our expected start date! I was very happy with the project manager, CJ. He came up with great ideas turning my beach entry into a Baja step along with adding a few steps into pool, the umbrella sleeves on Baja step, Baja furniture and making the coping around the pool bigger. CJ was always available with any questions and was here daily checking on the crew. I told him I needed the pool done by a certain date and he made it happen! He was even available to take calls after pool construction was done to help fix an issue with damaged coping. He followed through to make sure that it was fixed. When the Baja furniture was delivered and a piece was on back order, CJ followed through to get that piece delivered. The stone and tile guys Leo, Ozzie and I can't remember everyone else's names were all respectful and hard workers. They would show up on time on the days they were scheduled for work. ASP was always good sending out emails the day or night before to say I had a crew showing up. We are very happy we chose ASP because they are a big company and stand behind their work. I feel like we got the "A" team since they finished the pool in a timely manner! The Bahama jewels color for the pebble tech came out beautiful!! I would recommend Alan Smith Pools to anyone and here are a lot of reasons why. First of all we asked around and a lot of our friends, who also live in Mission Viejo, recommended them and we found out that they have been in Business since the eighties. We needed a pool renovation because the contractor that built our pool five years ago did not seal it properly. So we bit the bullet and finally decided to call Alan Smith and we were impressed from the very start with Mike Sickels who came out to give us a price. We had to remove all the plaster, all the tile and all the coping. Basically we needed a new pool. Mike Sickels walked us through the whole process and we met him later at their headquarters in Orange. The showroom was extensive and their people were all top notch. We liked the idea that they hydro blasted our plaster off the pool instead of chipping it off. They apparently specialize in this procedure. They had a virtual tent covering our pool when they hydro blasted it which kept most of the dust down. They even put a visqueen draped wall between the pool and the house to protect everything from dust. I have never seen a company that thought each process through to protect our property and also I loved the fact they cleaned up like "they were never there" everyday. We were so impressed with the fastidious and expert laying of our tile by Salvador and Fermin. They were here every morning at 7 am and worked so hard to do a perfect job. I have never seen such hard workers. They should get a medal. Of course all this would not have happened but for our Superintendent, CJ. He oversaw a lot and and dealt with the permits, the inspectors and just about everything. We were adamant about just getting our pool plastered but CJ suggested we should go with their small-sandstone pebble look which would hold up better and not discolor. We are so happy we did. This company started a spa remodeling project for our condo community in November of 2022. Today is May 13th and the spa is still un-usable. I've been a General Contractor for over 40 yrs and I've heard every excuse you can think of why a project has taken so long. I've also heard every reason why the project is thousands of dollars higher than the original contract because of unforeseen change orders. Allan's company used them all. I actually watched for months 2 or 3 employees would show up in the morning once (if lucky) twice a week, only to have one person work for maybe an hour while the others watched and then leave. Blamed the Building Department when actually the reason was that they had too much work and needed to spread out the workers. I requested a quote from this company for remodeling and adding an in ground spa to my existing pool. Someone came out and gave me a written quote. We discussed everything I wanted done and what it would cost. We took measurements and discussed placement of the spa. I was very clear in what I wanted. He asked me for my budget and I asked him if it was realistic. He gave me a written quote and said it was good for 30 days. He claimed he could not give me a price for redoing my deck bc he can't measure it person, he uses Google earth. The price quoted was $58k for a Baja bench, resurface, adding the spa, and a few other things necessary to make all the changes. I asked if there was any way to get it closer to 50 and he said he would run the numbers and get back to me. It took over a week for him to send me the quote. But magically, it wasn't closer to 50, it was suddenly up to $90k!! When I questioned him on it he claimed it was because of add-ons and upgrades I wanted. However those add-ons and upgrades were clearly discussed in my backyard and part of his original quote of 60k. He then tried to talk to me like I was stupid (typical tactic of contractors with female homeowners) and claim I just had it wrong. No, misogynist, I have your written quote on my counter. I'm not confused or stupid. You're trying to pull a bait and switch. I'm happy to pay the going rate for quality workmanship and I was even willing to wait all the way to October to get my pool done. What I'm not willing to do is get ripped off or lured in at a low price and then get that quote doubled just when I'm ready to put down my deposit. I've been involved in the pool business for 15 years, over the years Alan Smith has offered education classes to all local or companies to help understand the make up and structure of pools. Believe it or not most pool guys have not seen a pool under construction, and are not aware of the building techniques needed to make quality work. I already wrote a review for Alan Smith Pools on another platform, and as a small business owner I don't take writing a poor review lightly, so I wasn't planning on also reviewing here on Yelp. However, about a week ago I received a very transparent follow-up call from this company after writing my review on the other platform, asking what they can do to "maybe get it up to 3 stars?". The reason that this bothered me so much is because, as I told the person who called me, everything that I wrote in the review was already well documented with them and they never did anything to rectify or even try to satisfy us as customers, beyond simply completing the job that they should have done in the first place. Once they did that and got our payment (which we were billed many times prior to the job completion even when things were going poorly), they could have cared less about us......until our review popped up online. If you go to a restaurant, and it is run by management who cares, if you have an issue or a problem, they might comp you a meal or bring you a dessert, which is not about getting the free dessert.....it's about the establishment acknowledging their mistakes and making a good faith effort to try to do a little bit to make it up to the customer. There was none of that with Alan Smith Pools. When they did call me after the other review, I asked if they might have one of the owners or senior managers call me, and was told that they would not. Below is the review from the other platform that details the original experience....................................... Our initial impression of Alan Smith Pools was positive. The consultation was informative, and the project manager seemed knowledgeable. However, our excitement quickly turned into frustration and disappointment as the project got started. Scheduling was a nightmare from the beginning. After being promised a start date, they failed to show up for an entire week, without any communication, due to an apparent oversight in their system. When they finally arrived, the incompetence of the crew became evident. There was a mishap with draining our pool that could have resulted in significant damage to our property if not caught in time by my wife. Communication was another major issue. The lack of updates left us in the dark about the progress of the project. Even when workers were on-site, they entered and exited without notifying us, leading to confusion about the status of the work. The quality of the workmanship was abysmal. From leaving debris in the pool to botching the mastic application, to leaving the pool actuator leaking like a sieve, to finding the tray for our filter thrown in the bushes, it was clear that attention to detail was sorely lacking. They even broke one of our solar lights and never said anything about it. Despite numerous complaints and promises of improvement from the project manager, the situation did not improve until a new manager took over. We also felt like they were less than upfront when suggesting that we have the pool acid washed. What they failed to tell us was that if the surface was older with a shorter remaining life, they wouldn't be able to be as aggressive with the wash. So we paid for the acid wash and pool draining, and the surface looks pretty much as it did before. Overall, the experience with Alan Smith Pools was highly disappointing. We paid a premium price but received poor service and execution in return. I don't take leaving a negative review lightly, yet I don't feel that I can recommend this company at this time. read more

Worst business I've ever dealt with. Thieves basically stole our money and our pool joy. Started redoing our pool in April of 2021 and by January of 2022, less than a year after completion, I started noticing fading and discoloration of the plaster and stone finish. I called and called and no one came to do anything for a long time. Rick the service manager at ASPP kept delaying saying he was waiting for a wet edge guy, this went on for months. When they finally came to check out the problem they basically blamed our water PH when they clearly didn't seal the pool properly causing discoloration and our PH of the pool to be off and of course causing the water levels to read poorly. We also began getting black mold in the pool, this caused my family to fear swimming in our pool. The wet edge guy Kevin finally came and he told us that we needed to get an acid wash, another $1500 later, and it didn't fix the problem. Not to mention the water costs to refill the pool again. And of course the 10 year warranty says they are not responsible for the discoloration of the plaster. Pool & spa interior finishes: ASPP grants Customer a ten year warranty against defective material or workmanship, (i.e. plaster pop-off. Whatever this means). However, due to circumstances which are beyond the control of ASPP, ASPP shall not guarantee or be responsible for any staining,discoloration of plaster, or the unevenness of the curing following completion. ASPP shall not be responsible for spot etching & calcium nodule formation. All this making it very difficult for them to take any form of responsibility. Over $40,000 later and we only got to enjoy the pool we designed for 6 months. Very upsetting and now we have a fear of planning anymore remodels to our home. We purchased our home because it had a pool and now there is a negative feeling every time I look at it. Wish this company would take some responsible and fix the problem. Obviously, in my opionion poor craftsmanship and possibly a lack of supplies since it was during Covid. Something clearly went wrong since the problem arose so quickly after completion. Poor work ethic, poor communication and not a company who cares about its customer service and providing all around quality service. I waited 4 1/2 years before writing my review of Alan Smith Pools. They replastered our pool in white plaster, raised our spa wall and matched the existing tiles for new spa wall. We also got all new equipment (pump, filter and heater.) I researched for weeks before deciding on ASP. We had four different contractors bid the job. I noticed that ASP reviews were either glowing or negative. There weren't too many "middle of the road" reviews. We opted for ASP based on their experience and longevity in the business. The guy that bid our job oversold us on some things and after the down payment was tough to contact. I found out recently that he is no longer with the company. Without going into too much detail, our initial experience wasn't that great. So why the 5 star review? Integrity. Only 4 1/2 years into our 10 year warranty, the plaster in one area began to delaminate. Dario our warranty contact saw the issue immediately. He had a diver come out and check our pool surface. The diver used a grinder to smooth out the defects. We weren't too happy with the aesthetics of the fix but were willing to live with it. Approximately 4 months later, I noticed another delamination in the same area as the original ones. Dario came out again. Saw the spot immediately and without batting an eye gave us two options. One, they would redo the entire pool and spa in white plaster at no charge. Two, they would redo the entire pool and spa in Gemstone pebble which is more durable than white plaster and looks amazing FOR A FRACTION OF THE COST (mostly materials!) There was no trying to weasel out of the warranty. There was no trying to blame me for bad water chemistry. There was only a willingness to honor their word. One of the companies we had bid our job originally is no longer in business. What would've been our recourse had this happened under their watch? I poured over Yelp reviews for ASP and most of the negative reviews complained about things we noticed during our initial experience but in the end said their pool turned out great. I found no reviews talking about warranty experiences. To me, warranty experience and service AFTER the job is just as important as a job well done in the first place. Fast forward to our warranty experience. Raquel and Bridgette emailed me faithfully every day letting me know what crew was coming the day before so we could plan accordingly. Monday Salvador came out to drain the pool and spa. I spoke with him at length and he was friendly and professional. Tuesday a demo crew came out to hydroblast the old plaster. Wednesday a hydro clean up crew arrived followed immediately by a prep crew. Thursday a huge team showed up to plaster the pool. Friday a team showed up to acid wash the aggregate, put on the grates and lights, power wash the entire area to clean up and begin filling the pool. All teams showed up either on time or early. All crew members I interacted with were nice and professional. They patiently fielded my questions. It should be noted that this warranty job was undertaken in the middle of April. I can only imagine how busy ASP's schedule was at this time with folks trying to get their pools replastered and ready for summer. Furthermore, our pool is just a normal, older pool rather than a super fancy, new pool. They didn't put us on the back burner while they prioritized new jobs that would garner income. They honored their word and completed the job way faster than I anticipated. The new pebble pool finish looks amazing and should last for 20 years or more with proper care. In my opinion, if you're looking for a company to replaster your pool, you should just trust ASP. My experiences with most contractors has been negative but I realize that once things get opened up, problems can arise. It should be noted that pool replastering is just as much an art as it is a trade. Alan has more years experience than anyone in the area and he's handed that knowledge down to his sons and employees. No one is subcontracted. All work is done by ASP employees. Most importantly, in the event something does go south with the finished product, they will honor their warranty and give options to rectify the issue. In life you get what you pay for... Alan Smith is not the cheapest option when having your pool remodeled. If pricing is your only factor, keep looking - and good luck! Alan Smith Pools is a real company, it has bricks and mortar, a design center, engineering department, installation department organized by trade specialty, a startup and service department. You can walk in their showroom and see the depth of the organization that stands behind them. Infrastructure costs money, real project management costs money. Fly by night companies that work out of their house or shack, that are here to take your deposit today and are gone tomorrow are a dime a dozen in So. Cal. Caveat emptor with the guy who works out of his house, has a few trucks and is using the deposit from your job to pay for another job because he spent the money on his personal bills. Alan Smith is the real deal, with excellent sales, design, installation, equipment, startup and warranty service guys who know what they are doing. I was truly impressed how they attacked our massive remodel. Our project included the removal of 3000 sq. ft. of old stamped concrete that was cracked and heaving due to tree roots and replacing it with commercial grade artistic pavers. They took our pool down to the gunite shell, shallowed it from 8.5 ft to 5.5 ft. They repaired areas damaged by tree roots from massive palms planted too close to the shell, they extended our reef entry, replaced all the equipment with top of the line Pentair systems and chemical auto injection and ozone systems. All new equipment and pumps. The polished pebble finish is amazing! Shout out to Geoff in sales, who designed it like it was his, to Myles for getting everything done through the City and on the job site and to Patrick who was absolutely tenacious at making sure everything worked as designed. This was a massive job costing more than $225,000. There were times my patience ran thin on scheduling (mostly due to City related issues) but all in all, I chose them for the above reasons and was very happy with the results! I'm the CEO of a large commercial construction and service company. I'm a licensed GC, an engineer, I know what competence looks like! Construction projects are not easy - remodels are ten times worse because usually, the other guy did things to cut corners years ago that have to be redone today and my job was no different. Bottom line, I would choose them again! (and that's the highest compliment a person can give!) Matter of fact, already talking to them about some more paver work I'd like to see done. read more

Met with multiple companies. This company stood out--initially based on what they offered and timeline to start project. Days after paying deposit work was moved out for 5 months. Demo day--guys came very little prep. Plaster was shot everywhere. Damaged many many large succulents we have. Plaster was in the pool cover cavity--they NEVER cleaned even after bringing to their attention. Work lagged after demo. Because of this I held payment--but had paid over 50% of the project at this point. I believe I should not pay for work not done. Interestingly, I was told that the "hold up" was not because of payment but later received email from their billing department telling me that work would begin once the next payment was made--which would make payments at 80% of the project yet the pool replaster had not yet begun. Fast forward. Pool work done. It does look nice. However, now my pool cleaner is having issues maintaining the pool pH. I have reached out to Alan Smith and now that I am paid in full I get no support or help. Would recommend another company. read more

I tried contacting them twice on the internet, no replies at all. I called them and got an appointment 3 days later, they never showed up. I called office and the contacted the field agent. He called me and said some mix up with there appointment system I was not on their schedule. This is how they do business. Don't bother calling them at all. Waste of my time. Your office employee were not of any help either they were rude and not helpful, after the fact that they made a mistake. They blame the computer system for their mistakes, not acceptable, just suck it up and take the hit and not blame the computer, the easy way out. read more

We were looking for someone to renovate a 40-year old pool. We selected Alan Smith because the conversations we had gave us a high level of confidence in their work. During the project we discussed alternatives for fixing various cracks - the pros and cons of various methods were discussed. The pool came out looking outstanding. Job well done. The story doesn't end there. About 3 months later I noticed a large rust spot from nut that had fallen in the pool. I went to a local pool store to buy a pumice stone but they said I couldn't use the pumice on our pool surface type. They suggested a chemical and told me how to use it. I did. Mistake. The chemical removed the rust but it also severely lightened a basketball-sized spot in the pool plaster. I called Alan Smith on Friday and explained what happened. On Monday morning they were out at the house and within 90 minutes the basketball-sized spot was repaired. They didn't charge us and said that they were happy to help us out. So in the end they did a great job and then went above and beyond my expectations by repairing the pool finish. Highly recommend. read more
