Not wanting the boring, Concession Stand food, like cheeseburger or hot dogs we opted for the Alaska Gourmet Subs! Judy and I both got the Fajita Steak Sub on Herb Wheat rolls! So much better than concession food in Den'ina! Totally hit the spot with Vicki's Chips and an Iced Tea! Folks were going where'd you get that as we chowed on our Steak Fajita subs. Ambience is small sub shop. Service is counter service and fairly rapid. The vegetarian sandwich that I got was on the herb bread and toasted. I got lettuce provolone cheese mayonnaise tomatoes, pickles, olives and onion. It was possibly one of the best subs I have ever had. The six inch is huge. This is a small sub shop located in downtown Anchorage. They are only open for lunch and has metered street parking in reasonable walking distance and a commercial parking lot next door. It had a feel like an old Chinese carryout from back home. They have a very small dining area, a couple of tables and bar seating along the windows. The offer exotic subs, a few sides, pizza and drinks. You can get your subs in 6 or 12 inches on white or wheat bread. I ordered a 6 inch reindeer sub with a bag of chips (they don't have fries). I got a bottle drink only because I did not see the fountain drink machine in the back. t took me about 5 to 10 minutes to get my sub and it was delicious. It was very tasty and full of flavor. The sauce they used on it, really set it off. It was also surprisingly filling. I did not even eat my bag of chips. If you are in downtown Anchorage and in the market for a sub, then this should be your spot. They have some very reasonable prices and very delicious food. I recommend checking them out. read more

It has taken me forever to come here! My excuse: I don't work downtown. That seems to be the main clientele here. They are only open for lunch. The menu is pretty simple. Mostly standard subs with some Anchoragian flourishes here and there. (reindeer sausage, Asian-inspired stuff) I got a submarine sandwich classic: roast beef. I was feeling like a big boy, so I decided to take all 12 inches! It came out hot. I was surprised. I didn't specify any toasting (nor did I know it was an option?) As I munched on this girthy sandwich I noticed the warmth absorbing from the enormous trunk of this bread torpedo into my hands was a result of the BREAD being just that FRESH! Fresh from the oven! My partner was not impressed with his sub either. The bread appeared to be old, not enough meat and it was drenched in vinegar. First time eating at this quaint shop located near the Atwood building. Had the lunch special today. The bread had a nice toast to it and the flavors of the Italian sub were superb. Italian sub with chicken noodles soup. Now they dont brag that their bread is fresh baked same dsy and i dont know if ot is BUT. It tasted fresh baked, wow. I'm always skepticsl of soup out because nine times out of ten it is not homemade. I KNOW THIS WAS. it reminded me of my own recipe and maybe e en a hair better. I have visited Alaska Gourmet Subs on multiple occasions and have always been pleased with the food and the service. The place is small so it can get crowded but they are always fast and efficient. Today we ordered for delivery, I was a little hesitant since the sandwiches are toasted sometimes they can end up cold or soggy but these arrived hot, fresh and delicious. The portions are huge and the bread is just the perfect balance between crusty on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. They did forget an item we ordered but when I recieved the receipt via email there was an opportunity to leave feedback. I got a phone call almost immediately with a sincere apology and someone heading out right now to deliver our forgotten item, it was just a soda that was forgot not a meal or anything but AGS went above and beyond to make us happy. So coming from the east coast, where subs are usually excellent, most places are a step or 2 down. The subs here are unexpectedly good. Nice size and substantial. Not the crusty roll of Philly but a good option anyway. We had turkey and ham and roast beef. All were very nicely made. A good change from the cruise food we had for the past week. read more

I came down here for lunch just before putting in some studying time at the Dark Horse Coffee Co. next door. AK's Gourmet Subs are located next door to City Hall and across from the Civic Convention Center at the corner of 7th and F St. The employees behind the counter gave a warm greeting and were quick to take my order. The seating area is fairly small, but it wasn't crowded when I got there and I was able to find a decent table rather than the counters lined up by the window. I decided to try one of their specialty subs called the Skinny Raven which had turkey, avocado, bell pepper, sprouts, feta cheese, and Greek Mediterranean dressing on wheat bread along with a side of macaroni salad and a drink. The sandwich arrived within a few minutes with the bread hot out of the oven and I settled down to eat. The sandwich was alright. I could taste the feta and the avocado, but I didn't notice any bell peppers and the sandwich had too much dressing that drowned out the other ingredients for me to fully enjoy. The macaroni salad was okay. The consistency was a little thick rather than loose which I prefer along with some dill for added crunch. The price for a six-inch sub was okay at $7.95, but the additional $4.00 for the macaroni salad, chips, and soda for a total of $12.00 was kind of steep for the amount of food served. I could've ordered the daily special sub which included soup for a better price at $9.95, but I was told by the girl behind the counter that the Skinny Raven was one of their most popular sandwiches. Despite the mediocre meal, I intend to come back to try some of the more interesting items on their menu. Some of the other specialty subs of note are the Wild Alaska Salmon (FYI I was told that this is a spread, not a fillet with homemade roasted garlic sauce and provolone cheese), Reindeer Sausage (slathered with BBQ sauce and cheddar cheese), the Seafood Melt (a blend of four cheeses, crab, shrimp, herbs, and spices), and the Asian Beef (grilled steak sauteed with onions and bell peppers topped with Asian sesame dressing and provolone cheese). In addition to the subs, they also serve pizzas, gyros, wraps, and salads. Some of the pizzas available are the Northern Lights (artichokes, olives, and feta cheese), Chicken Ranch (chicken, bacon, mushroom, ranch, onion, and fresh tomatoes), and the Alaska Special (salami, pepperoni, ham, reindeer sausage, olive, mushroom, bell peppers, and onions). Other items also include the Cobb Salad (grilled chicken, bacon, avocado, olive, tomato, hard boiled eggs, and blue cheese), the Chef Salad (turkey, ham, onion, tomato, cucumber, olive, cheddar, mozzarella, and hard boiled eggs), and the Lamb Gyro (seasoned lamb strips, tomato, onion, Greek tsatziki sauce, on Greek pita bread). All of these items are good reasons for me to come back for a better-tasting meal and to stick to my philosophy of giving everyone a second chance if the first visit was less than ideal. The excellent service and friendly employees are a big plus for this place as well as the location in downtown away from the chaos of the rush hour traffic on 5th and 6th Ave. Cheap parking is available across the street in the parking garage at $1.00 per hour instead of having to pay $2.50 for two hours with curbside parking. I want to like this place and hopefully I can give a more positive updated review in the near future. read more

This is my second time being in and I really like it. I went today with the chef salad expecting it to be "meh" but instead it was filling and if I can describe a salad as being clean, that is what it was. The lettuce was crisp and had a lot of flavor. It also had red onion, a hard boiled egg and cheese and turkey and ham oh my!! It also had black olives which are the lesser of all the olives but it did not ruin my experience at all. Been one of my fav Anchor-town sub shops for a while. Nice place to mix-it-up if you ever get tired of the same ol' Subway and/or Quiznos cuisine IMHO. Located in the same building as Dark Horse Coffee, on the corner of 7th and F St, it is convenient for the downtown business crowd and/or anyone in the area looking for a quick bite. The space is a bit small, so you can expect it to feel a bit crowded after 8+ people begin to occupy it. Seems like whenever I've been through there it's always been fairly busy. The staff is nice enough; never been overly nice, nor have they been overly distant in my experience. They're efficient in churning out the subs even when it gets busy. I've never had to wait longer than probably 6-8 minutes after my order has been placed. I like their Gyros, bout what you'd expect to get at the price point. Their Reindeer Steak, Asian Beef, and Fajita Steak subs are go-tos as well. I came here around noon on a monday. I seemingly got lucky on timing because there was quite a line behind me. I placed my order at the counter to go and sat down to wait. I waited for probably less than 5 minutes before my name was called. I can't speak for how long of a wait the person at the end of the line would've had, but mine wasn't so bad. I ordered a 12' italian sub and a small cup of the chicken cream broccoli soup. The sub was tasty, but I felt for the size and price it really needed more meat to it. My soup was really good I enjoyed it very much. Despite the food being tasty I'm not sure that id come here that often. I do feel as though for a sub and a small cup of soup it was really pricey. All in all I paid 17 bucks for my meal and that isn't even with a drink. But honestly for most people a 6' should fill you up and it'll save you a few bucks, I'll get a 6' next time. Also I was a little surprised with the place itself. I was expecting something a little more upscale, but it's small and not super fancy. I suppose it doesn't need to be though, it is a sandwich place. I don't have anything positive or negative to say about the staff, my interactions with them were very short and to the point. Gourmet subs!? Get out of here! Came here today because it was conveniently located across from the Dena'ina Center. First time here, asked the cashier what her personal favorites were. She said "the pepper club or if you want something more 'traditional', the meatball sub." So I ordered the 6" meatball. I was so disappointed when I took a bite and there weren't any meatballs, rather processed little meat slices. WTF!? Please don't use the word meatball if you don't use meat balls.
