When we walked I the first door and saw the inside, we almost didn't go in. It had a small "diner-esque" feel. However, we always like to eat at local places (not national chains) when traveling so we gave it a shot. Our booth was comfortable and roomy, the table was spotless. Hubby ordered grilled halibut with fried calamari and fried prawns. I had grilled salmon with fried clam strips. Both of us had shoestring fries for our sides. The fried food seems to be where they excel. Everything fried tasted fresh, not greasy, and delicious. The grilled fish was another story. So most folks think of only salmon when Alaska is mentioned. I did. And when I went, the salmon were even swimming upstream. But the locals I was having lunch with said, try the halibut. I did. Good call. Nothing fancy - battered and deep fried. But super fresh. I also ordered the chowder. Much like the halibut, it was also deep fried - only if that were possible. Meh. I've lived a half block from Momma Os for a decade and always avoided it because it's so damn expensive. I figured since we were moving I should try it at least once. I have no regrets about having only eaten their once. The food was fine and prepared well, but relative to quality and portion and service style and setting it is extremely over-priced. Disgusting. I'm sorry but I can not let this go unshared. Cooks here know nothing about preparing and properly cooking food. See the photo attached. The clans were nearly as bad and my son's halibut was grilled too long. Dry and flavorless. They tried to make it right by frying more up for me only it was delivered saturated in oil. Dripping with oil. Calling yourself a seafood restaurant doesn't make you a seafood restaurant. And how any one gives this did a pass blows me away. If you live in Anchorage, everyone wants to come visit you. They probably ask you the same 'ol questions. One of them probably is "what's the best seafood restaurant in town". Which is frustrating, because I'd argue that that question doesn't have an easy answer, though it should. Momma O's is a decent candidate, for a "quick serve" seafood restaurant. It reminds me of an east coast lobster house on the beach with picnic tables. Except it's in Spenard. They have fresh seafood, most of it fried and served with French fries (although you can get most things grilled and with a trip to the salad bar instead). Prices are reasonable. However, you'd never call it an "event" place or a "sit down" place. It's very good for what it is though: a great place to get a fried fish basket on the go. Give them a shot! read more

I had a thought of having a bowl of Clam Chowder in Seattle. So I thought I would try Momma O's for my craving. I ordered 2 bowls of Clam Chowder to go. It came with 4 bags of Oyster Crackers, and 2 spoons. I brought it home and tasted the Chowder. Boy O boy it is so good. The creaminess with the crunchiness of onions, celery and potatoes. I was craving some sort of chowder, any king, seafood, fish, clam, whatever and found Momma O's. I was not that hungry and went with the bowl of clam chowder and steamed mussels. The chowder taste was good but it was not thick like others described as I found more liquidy than thick. and my bowl was predominantly the broth and not the clams, potatoes or other veggies. Thus a 2 1/2 star for the chowder. The steamed mussels did not have much juice to work with, dipping a steamed and now dry appearing mussel is good when there is ample sauce to dip it into. The appearance was so reminiscent of Lake Mead over the years with only scant liquid. They did taste reasonably fresh but mostly on the dry side. 3 stars. So food is good enough I might try it again but ordering different things. Easy parking and here is massage businesses all around this mall. A diamond in the rough. This place is a great little quick service place--you order at the front, give them your name and they call out your food once it's done. I think it's great for lunch, especially since I work in midtown, but perfect for a quick dinner. Most people come here for a fried fish of some sort, but they have quite a bit of healthy options as well. I tend to order the grilled salmon with stir fry veggies. The salmon is always cooked fresh on a real grill with a flame!! This is quite amazing cause most quick service places use flat top grills. You can also add seasonings to your food-- lemon pepper, blackened, Cajun, etc. my boyfriend usually gets the grilled chicken with Cajun seasoning--which I've tried and the Cajun season is spot on, so much flavor. We do know that momma o's was recently taken over by the owner of winky's wings and they are definitely kicking it up. When we walked in tonight we saw a few new specials on their chalkboard-gumbo and Alfredo. We didn't order either but, while we were eating the owner cane up to our table and asked us if we liked shrimp and bacon, we said yes and the owner told us that he would be back with something for us to try. A few minutes later he brought us over a generous sample size of the gumbo. I say generous because it was a cups worth ad had at least 7/8 shrimp in it. After trying it I wish there was more it was bursting with flavor. We are looking forward to see what else the new owner brings to the restaurant, so far it's going in the right direction! read more

Probably the cheapest (but BEST) fish n chips in town. The amount of cod (my go to order) in the cod and chips is so much I can't finish it. Perfect for my teenage son who can eat multiple orders elsewhere and still be hungry. My toddler loved the tv (she watched Disney while we ate) and it kept her quiet.
