I came as a walk-in and the owner Trevor was so kind and took his time helping me. He is a perfectionist with his lines and made what might seem like a simple tattoo to some very beautiful for me. I came here looking for my first tattoo, and everybody there made me feel at ease. When I got there the mood was very laid back and chill. When I first went into Albatross to consult with Trevor, I told him a concept and within a week, he drew up a design that I was able to critque to my liking. When it was time for the first poke of the needle, Trevor was very precise as to how clean the station was for me, which speaks volume as how professional the shop is. Trevor and Ren both are very detailed oriented in their art work. Its been almost a week since I've had my tattoo and the process is going smoothly. It's healing nicely, all because Trevor walked me through the process of caring for my new tattoo. In the beginning, I had some excellent touch up work by Ren. However, he did either cancel or try to reschedule 2 of the 3 appointments I made. One cancellation was an email to me on the morning of the appointment so I didn't get it until I showed up and he wasn't there. His shop partner finally tracked him down and it sounded like he was basically running an errand. I still made another appointment and tried to work with his busy schedule. Not trusting things from past experience I tried to reach him through email and voice mail, then finally through a mutual aquaintance. He did not respond so I showed up as scheduled only to find out he stood up a client the day before and also did not make it to mine. I gave up. I agree with another (filtered) reviewer who said his work is great but difficult to replicate. I have a half finished memorial piece that I've been interviewing artists to complete for a couple months the piece. Just be aware that Ren has a lot going on and can be flakey. I am giving him 2 stars for excellent artistry and I appreciate the work he started, but as a consumer I feel he could improve on his professionalism. This industry is fraught with creative types who don't have a handle on customer service. It's frustrating because appointments can be weeks or months apart, only to have it treated like it's no big deal to cancel. read more

Sister and I were visiting Portland and entered this shop on a bit of a whim (we were about 85% sure we wanted small pinetree tattoos and 100% sure we didn't want to pay over $60 for them)... We are SO glad we did! What a classy, clean, comfy and professional shop. Joe (aka Joseph III) accepted us kindly as walk-ins and spent the entire evening on our little rib trees. He is conservative as far as honestly with placement, aftercare, etc. which I appreciate - you want your pretty new ink to stay looking pretty. He was so funny, kept us both smiling and as relaxed as possible through the inevitable tattoo pain. There was plenty of water and candy to clear a light head. He was so thorough, patient and just the best. My sis had to be topless for her upper rib area and he totally professional about that too - put up a "fortress of solitude" *lol* as he called it with screens so she had total privacy. Joe spent a good chunk of time between the two (different) tattoos - drawing, set-up, creating perfect tattoos and still only charged us the hourly minimum. So nice! If we lived here, you bet we'd be back for more tattoos by Joe! Have never felt so comfortable in a tattoo parlor before, SO HAPPY we found it! read more

Ren has done all of my tattoos (which, admittedly isn't that many) and this is the third shop I have followed him too. I love that there are only the two artists in the shop and that they are custom. No craptastic flash art lining the walls that are destined to be a huge regret. These gentleman are true artists and it shows in their work. I have people who are die hard 'anti-tattoo, intantly ruins your life' type people compleatly fall in love with my work. The shop minimum is super reasonable for the level of art that you're getting. Definitely worth stopping by to see if it's the right shop for you. read more

My brother was visiting from Australia and wanted to get a tattoo while he was here. He only had a few days and knew the chances were slim to get something good at such short notice. He contacted the shop on Tuesday, we went in on Wednesday and Trevor talked with him briefly and agreed to draw something up. By Friday afternoon he was sitting in Trevor's chair for 3 hours getting both line and color done. He was exhausted but satisfied. I would recommend Trevor to other people because his ability to be flexible and make it happen in a small time frame but also his art work was exactly what my brother wanted it looks amazing. read more

I got half of an arm sleeve done by Ren and let me tell y'all, he is super professional open and makes you feel welcome and I feel like I developed a good relationship with him. I am very happy that my friend recommended him and I'll definetly be going back to him for any future tattoos I'll be getting. I recently got some work done on my back at Albatross and could't be happier. Trevor did a excellent job of taking a mediocre idea and focusing it into a interesting and original piece of work. It has been about a month or so since I went in and everything still looks great. I look forward to continuing to get work done on my current tattoo as well as future work from Albatross. Ren is amazing. I had some drawings of what I thought I wanted for a tattoo, but as soon as I saw his book I threw the drawings out and put myself completely in his hands. He worked up some original drawings based on my general ideas, and he captured exactly what I wanted right away. I'm sad to say that I had a disappointing experience with Ren two years ago at this tattoo shop. I asked for an orca in the native Japanese Ainu style on the inside of my arm. First, back and forth reliable communication was difficult. But, I had been lookin for an artist who did good line work, as my tattoo was mostly that, and he came recommended and his portfolio is impressive. Second, when I was reviewing the final design, I noticed that the design inside the dorsal fin looked like a circumcised penis. When I pointed it out to him, he said he noticed that too but didn't correct it for whatever reason. I told him to modify the design of course because who wants an unintended penis on their body for life? Third, when I sat down to get the tattoo, he told me that I'd need to come back for touch ups once it healed a bit. I was fine with that especially when he guaranteed that it would be free. When it healed a it though it seemed like more than just touch ups. Lines were different thicknesses, the shading was not done well, and he didn't connect lines that I told him to connect after I saw the final drawing (which he assured me he would). Fourth, when I tried to get in touch with him afterwards to get my touch up, he never returned my phone calls or emails. He abandoned his work and left me with a incomplete tattoo that I have to live with and now have to pay someone else to finish. I'll won't go back there again which is sad because he seemed to do a great job with other people's tattoos. read more

Trevor Ward is a wonderful artist and person. I just got my second tattoo from him started yesterday. The shop is Clean, Comfortable, and Professional. I don't hesitate to bring my kids to see Trevor inking me up. He is a very nice guy, extremely friendly, easy to work with, and doesn't complain when I twitch. My first tattoo from Trevor healed very quickly and easily, almost shockingly fast compared to some others I've received elsewhere. After only two sessions almost two years apart, he has a great sense for how I sit, what I can tolerate and for how long. Trevor makes it a very comfortable, easy experience. This is a shoutout to Ren. What an easy going, professional, talented artist, he is a true master of his craft. I originally found Ren when looking to get a small piece done, now we have done a shoulder and the beginning of a sleeve and I couldn't be happier. I admire his style, which is what originally brought me to make an appt. Ren wants your input, he's not that guy who thinks he's gods gift and convinces you to put a spider on your body even though u want a flower simply bc he thinks his spiders are rad. He pays great attention to the little details in the consultation. He is also very time efficient and works fast. It's been a really cool experience to continue working with Ren, bc he listens and cares, every session I have come into is better than the last. When I come in to see what he has drawn up I am always happy and we only make minor changes to his drawings, if any. The shop is clean and small, cool art on the walls. I just finished a half sleeve with Ren and it turned out even better than I expected. I had an idea that was loosely based on some paintings I liked, and I didn't really know how to explain the idea to an artist very well, but when I went in for the consultation he basically read my mind and designed something absolutely perfect for me. His work is so detailed and interesting, and the shading he does is absolutely amazing. I wanted the kind of tattoo that would be more like a painting and less like a standard tattoo, and that's exactly what I got. The art work he drew up on paper before I started getting the tattoo was a kind of basic outline without all the detail filled in, which made me a little nervous at first, but after I got started with it I realized he knows exactly what he's doing and just trusted that I would love whatever he did even if I didn't see all the details on paper first. I can't wait to get something else done. It's a long wait to get in but it was very worth it. Also, the whole shop is really cool. I waited for a long time before ever considering a tatoo. The wait was worth it! Ive watched alot of tatoo shows and seen alot of ink over the years, and yet thought the idea of something permanently inked on my body seemed a little odd. At 54 my life has taken a number of turns and the idea flickered about getting a tat, that might serve as a reminder of how awesome and sometimes trying our lives are. Im fortunate to live so close to an awesome MAN like Ren. Hes just simply one cool down to earth artist whos only intention is honesty, love for family, and hard work. I had planned on something totally different for my first tatoo but my wife had another idea and with Rens input we decided on it. Yes its awesome, and yes I will admit showing it off to others, I couldnt care less if thats cool or not. Rens an artist first, since being a child in fact, and I feel like I have a priceless painting (black-grey-white) on my body. Its too bad that someday when im dead and gone it couldnt be handed down to one of my family members.
