When in Portland, a family member and I decided we wanted to get matching tattoos. We got one during a girl's trip in Vegas, so why not Portland too? We walked in to Atlas Tattoo without an appointment and we were luckily accommodated. They normally let you do "call-ins" to place yourself on a timed slot during the day but one of the artists, Lewis, had time to squeeze us in. We got small matching tulips and wanted a fine line, minimalist design. We showed him exactly what we wanted and he drew it up and got us going. Between the two of us we were there for about an hour ish. Lewis did a fantastic job and he priced us decently - we contacted other spots who were asking upwards of $200 for a design that was going to take 20-30 minutes so we appreciated that Atlas Tattoo quotes accordingly. You can find the red house on the right when coming off the Interstate. It's located in a quiet part of Portland near the PDX. There seems to always have street parking available in front or down the road to the left side near the residential area. My best way to research the artist you want is to look at their work which can easily be seen on their website. Based on the possible idea of what I wanted, I chose Shaun Nel. He is an artist who has had decades of experience. Here at this tattoo establishment, everyone is quite impressive and professional with their work. You mosdef have OGs here who can take care of your tattoo. Cash only...$100 minimum, $180 an hour, and $40 deposit for reserving for large tattoos I presume. I got a relatively small-ish size so after I scheduled my consult, I did not have to put a deposit down. After giving my idea of half pineapple and half pine cone, Shaun gave good insight of removing the idea of shaping it as a grenade since it would take away from the real texture which is shown from shading in. Sunday is the day where they accept walk-ins! Come around 10am so you can get your name on the list! Call in advance to see who works on what day. They actually keep their hours here and are pretty good on time. Shaun was certain that he had the artwork down before he did his final sketch and scan for the outline. He was actual patient on making sure he was on point on where I wanted my tattoo placed. (I chose above the shin). It's a sensitive nerve part IMO. However, my tattoo turned out great! Many locals come here, too! Many repeat customers! That's a good sign. Children not allowed in back so they can chill with another adult at the cafe down the road. Super close! I've been having a summer fling with Atlas Tattoo, and I think it might be getting serious. I mean, this might be switching to long term, commitment, exclusivity. Everyone here is sooo nice to me. I'm greeted like a friend when I walk in, and I always feel welcome. I have noticed that they are that way with everyone. Nobody is too busy to look up and smile, engage in a little how's it going. They take the time to listen to what you want. There is no rush. I've been working with Jerry, and he has been very collaborative and flexible. We started with a specific plan and it kind of grew, he suggested and I agreed, I brought additions and he said "awsome!", and the relationship has developed in that way. I send him photos, he describes his ideas, we agree and then I put on the pretty gown and recline for a while while he does his artsy thing. I've seen this same thing with other artists in the studio. Everyone is excited about what they do, and they want you to get exactly what will please you, be meaningful in the way you intended, and that you will be proud of when you walk out the door. Last note - my husband watched the art on my back developing and decided he was ready for the tattoo he has been planning for, what, more than 10 years? He spoke with Dan, they huddled, Dan drew, and then BAM - the perfect tattoo. It's gorgeous, honestly, and Dan just did it. Just like that. He is amazing. Our tattoo artist was Juan! He did an amazing matching tattoos! I definitely would recommend him as an artist. I knew once he showed me and my best friend the drawing, the tattoo was going to be perfect! He's a chill guy! Love his attitude. The entire shop was friendly! I believe the receptionist's name is Michelle! She's super sweet! I didn't feel uncomfortable while getting my tattoo. This place is popular (for a reason)! I'd been wanting to get a new tattoo for a while and finally decided to pull the plug and go through with it. When I called in, the average wait time to get an appointment with an artist was about a month and a half out. Luckily, this place does call-in appointments on the weekend. I had to try a couple of different weekends calling in because the spots filled up so quickly! Again, I lucked out and was able to come in on a Sunday and had Mav as my artist. He was super sweet and patient as I explained what I wanted. Mav made sure to talk me through everything he was doing and was really efficient with getting the job done (no fun sitting under a sharp, hot needle if you don't have to). The design came out great and I'm very happy with it. Additionally, the shop was really clean; the front desk staff and other artists in the studio were very friendly; and COVID measures were in place. I had an amazing experience at this studio! The staff is extraordinarily friendly and welcoming (something I have not experienced at any other tattoo parlor ever). I ended up doing a walk in with Dan the owner, who exclusively does walk-ins, and boy did I luck out! Dan is not only a brilliant artist, but was very kind and patient with my squirming. He did beautiful and flawless line work in a miraculously short amount of time with minimal pain. (A rib tattoo on a person with ADHD, the man is good). He did a rough sketch directly on my skin and got to work, adding flowers and incorporating them into some pre-existing unfortunate shading that had been done by another artist at a shop in New Orleans. The work that Dan did was set on a beautiful angle of to complement my body. He thought every detail through, like a true professional and overshadowed a previously negative experience with an extraordinarily positive one. I absolutely adore my tattoo now and I am so grateful to have happened upon this wonderful establishment through striking up a conversation with one of Atlas's lovely managers. Y'all rock! About a year and a half ago I made my first appt with Lew to start my back piece. I came to him with a general concept and he drew up a beautiful design. He's put about 16.5 hours into my back and it's nearly finished, with just a few more hours of work left. I absolutely love my tattoo, and get compliments on it every time it's seen. Aside from Lew, i know people who have gotten great work from Dave and Cheyenne as well. I'm pretty sure every artist in the shop is top notch, and they're all really cool people too. I went in for a cover-up of kanji so I was scared I would offend him due to the whole half-Asian thing (read Landon B's review). Then from my offending him, he would tattoo a Hitler mustache on the skull I wanted and darnit I am half-German. Went and got my wrist tattoo last week with Corey. Corey did a great job at listening to my design ideas and suggestions. The only down side was getting an apt, but it was 100% worth it when I saw the finished product. I plan on going back to Corey after the new year to get more tattoos in my sleeve completed. I couldn't have asked for a better tattoo experience! The shop was clean and comfortable and there wasn't even a hint of attitude when I mentioned this was my first tattoo. My tattoo artist was Jerry Ware. Jerry and the rest of the staff were extremely attentive and made me feel comfortable and well taken care of. Half way through the tattoo I did have to take a moment before continuing. Jerry and Dan Gilsdorf were right there for me with candy and water and Jerry even shared stories of his own tattoo experiences. Jerry's line work was exceptionable and his attention to detail was remarkable. Jerry made some small changes to the font I brought in and I could not be happier with the outcome. We finished in one four-ish hour sitting (not sure I'd recommend a four hour sitting to everyone - it was a lot, but Jacob checked in with me throughout and it worked just fine for me)! I'd recommend Jacob specifically and Atlas generally without reservation to friends and family; it's clean, has a great atmosphere and the artists are skilled and consistently demonstrate interest in getting you want you want. Mav did some line work with graphic designs inside on my arm today. I am so so happy with how perfect and precise he did my tattoo. He is great. The shop was clean and the staff professional. They book out far in advance and only do walk ins on Sunday. I would suggest getting there by 915 on a Sunday to get your tattoo done as soon as they open at 11. It's definitely worth it. I'm definitely getting a tattoo from here again. Lew did an amazing job on my intricate compass tattoo. He did exactly what I wanted. Something to note though, if you want to do a walk-in, you need to get there before they even open I would suggest. I ended up just making an appointment because I went in twice and they were already full on their walk-in days. Cheyenne is the worst person I've deal with in the tattoo community not only did he scar my sister because he didn't like the price he quoted her. I got thigh piece and at the time Cheyenne said he was happy to do it because it was me. It stayed uncolored for over a year and then when I did get it colored once again he wasn't happy with the price and complained the entire time he was doing the tattoo.
