Jared answered the phone when I first called before my trip into Portland to visit a friend, because after searching some shops, New Rose seemed like the best! My friend and I were wanting matching plastic vampire teeth tattoos since it'd be Halloween weekend and he was so kind when I told him what we wanted and mentioned he hadn't finished his flash sheet so he'd add in the teeth, (spoiler, they were PERFECT). The day we were planning on coming in was their planned flash day so we knew we had to anticipate a potential wait. The rainy Portland weather was in our favor because, even though we were unable to make our way in at 10:30AM as he recommended, we ventured in at 3PM and still got a spot in line. Jared was great, adding the text I wanted to my flash, and even touching up a small hand/wrist tattoo that was poorly done by someone else in a different state prior. Truly, so thankful he answered the phone that day bc I got a great vibe from him. He was also able to successfully turn my "splotch" knuckle tattoo (my loving nickname for it) to a beautiful black skull that ACTUALLY STAYED PUT (it was the 4th attempt over an old scar I had and he was the only one to successfully have a tattoo stick on it without it looking weird once healed). Since Jared was short on time before an appt, Ali did my friends matching fangs and they both turned out amazingly. Overall, I now fully intend to make the journey from Sacramento to Portland anytime I want something done so I can specifically have him do it or his shop-mate that does phenomenal portrait style flash/tattoos (she was diagonal from us when we were there - blonde long hair and beanie). The shop was super clean, artists were all super friendly, front desk apprentice was easy on the eyes, what's not love? 100/10 could not recommend this place enough! read more

Had a great experience with Jared yesterday. I'd been referred to New Rose by a friend, walked in last week (knowing that I wouldn't get the work done that day) and made an appointment for this last weekend. When I got to New Rose, Jared and I chatted for a few minutes so he could get an idea of what I was looking for. I'd brought in a couple of examples and he told me "no problem", he could work with these and would do a sketch up. A bit later - maybe 20 minutes or so - he showed me what he'd done and we went forward from there. This is my first - and probably only - tattoo and it has a significant meaning to me. Jared took my example and gave me ink that I'm proud to have. We had a pleasant chat while he was working, and I enjoyed the artistry that he provided in interpreting my request. I'm guessing about an hour and a half from walk-in to finish. $160 total. Thanks!!! read more

10/10. I really feel bad for the neighboring tattoo shops. Real competition on this block, the talent in the shop is outstanding. Immediately greeted by Renata (who does insane work). I sat down and explained that I was doing a cover up and it was dark. No hesitation, she immediately recommended numerous things to choose. I chose neither and opted for a patriotic piece. Renata returned with an amazing piece on my appt date. Setting up appointments are as easy as asking when you are available. If you want certain people, please understand that there is a line for good work. I cannot thank this shop enough, I've been denied way too many times to count. The artists here are hilarious, and there is an awesome vibe in the shop. Expect a number of people here, they give great walk in service. I sat in the chair for about 5 hours and I cannot say enough how much these people care for your tolerance of pain. Let your artist work, and you'll be surprised by the service here. Every 10-20 minutes I was reassured that we could stop or take breaks. Never have I been to a shop where I eat lunch with my artist.. You cant pay these people enough in recommendations. Carrie I want to thank you for your shop. You truly look for people that are insanely dedicated to their work. If you dont stop here, you will be sorely upset for missing an appointment. I took me & my three girlfriends here to get tatted and it was truly a 10/10 experience. Three girls were tatted in the span of 4 hours which includes the time spent drawing up the different tatts (we all got horses, but each did our own variation of a horse) and they all turned out soooo good. Yelp, you led me to the right place. I got my first tattoo here two days ago from Carrie. I initially found the shop from Yelp-surfing, and then chose Keri based on her artwork and popularity. It took a couple weeks to be able to schedule a consult, and then a couple more for the appointment. This was all well and fine for me because I wanted to be sure I was making the right decision, but something to keep in mind. Carrie is very popular and thus not exactly a spur of the moment decision booker! All of the artists have their portfolios online you can peruse, and you pick the person based on what and how they can draw as best fits what you're looking for. I picked a design and Carrie made it gorgeous. I'm definitely going to go back for some shading in a month or two, and I'll be going back to her. The shop itself is very comfortable. To be honest, if you're not getting tatted by Marena then you might as well save your money. There's a reason why she's always booked months ahead!! This shop says they take walk ins but when it comes to face tattoos, they fold. Seems like they're too scared to step out of their comfort zone. I called the shop to chat about some ideas, the woman I spoke with on the phone was so kind and helpful, she suggested I come in to talk more and figure out who would be the best fit for my idea. Once there, everyone was very friendly and helpful. We agreed that Renata would be the best fit. I decided to finally get my long awaited tattoo today and perused a few shops in SE. What I discovered after visiting a few places is that although there are a lot of talented shops in the Portland area, none compare to New Rose. They are both professional and warm in the way that they interact with customers. They offered tons of suggestions, were very honest and clear about what they could and couldn't do, and worked with me to obtain the tattoo vision that I wanted! Willis did my tattoo, did an amazing job and gave me extensive info on after care! I was so happy with my results and want to go back to add more asap! :) The only con is that the amount that I would be charged wasn't super clear. At first I was told $100, but I ended up getting charged $155. So double check the price before you get your tattoo! To be clear, I was totally okay with paying that much because I loved my tat and as the saying goes, you get what you pay for! read more

Jared was so kind, patient & accommodating! I've seen Carrie in the past and she's awesome so I was hesitant to jump the gun due to how long her wait list was to get in. Jared was quick, efficient and less intimidating than he looks lol. Just a teddy bear! The only thing I will say (still giving this parlor 5-stars) that each time there's been some conflict with the schedule such as how long my session was supposed to be booked for or confusion on what I was coming in to get done. I'm actually going back today on the books for a few touch ups and possible a few scripts! I know Jared has this in the bag and i'm stoked to see him! so i had been eyeing this place to get my tattoo done for awhile, due to all the positive reviews online. (thanks yelp) my mind was set that i wanted to get a custom totem pole piece in a sort of asian/neotraditional style. i went through each the artist's portfolios on their website /instagrams and found that zachary bailey had just recently done a really rad totem pole piece! i called and scheduled a consultation which didnt take long at all, then went in a day after to get it done! i am more than happy with his work! very clean and nicely done. zachary is a pro at what he does - he was able to take a 5 minute discussion with me and turn it into everything i had in mind (plus more). they mentioned that you get a free retouch within one year i believe, which is great cause who doesnt love that the staff and service is really chill and the overall experience/environment has a very comfortable feel to it. make sure you have aquaphor too, that stuff works wonders read more

i decided to walk in and see if anyone was available to do a traditional style tattoo. On my arm. I wanted it to cover some scars I have there. had two people in mind that i seen on website. One of them happened to be there. I then was approached by an artist named Ali Hawks. i was completely shocked by here judgement, discrimination and rudeness. she agreed to being able to do it for me. Until she seen that my scars were from self harm reasons. so what. She was not honest and tried to tell me she couldn't do it because the scars weren't healed. Even though I explained they weren't new it had been 7months at least. But then I said ok that's ok I'll get something else that I want, somewhere else. Told her what I wanted. she again denied to do it. told me that she didn't want to do one for me in case I was getting it on an impulse. did I tell u I'm tattooed in a lot of places. im not a young person that hasnt experienced being tattooed before. Im 47?yrs old. Then I said are you seriouse? Then I sked politely for her to see if other two artist had an opening. They denied me. i get that they want to back her decision making, up. But she wasn' right to assume that about me. She judged me because I have a mental illness she stubbornly and rudely changed her mind and thought she had an idea about who I was and what I wanted. I've never been so discriminated against by people that im sure have in some way been discriminated against themselves. Don't judge, assume, and act better than or cooler than someone you don't know at all. they shouldn't have treated me that way. what a total crappy environment to get tattooed in or to be in. I don't need decisions made for me by someone half my age. I don't need to be treated and denied service because I might have mental health issues I never did anything wrong.. Don't treat me badly when I get surprised at your way of thinking and don't assume im not able to make my own decisions about a tattoo. if I want to get tattooed impulsively that's my choice my decision. That's ok. I'm tattooed on my hands and most of my arms and other places. she could tell I wasnt the type to change my mind about it. If I did I am ablevto handle it and deal with it. I haven't always had the best experiences trying to do walk-ins with certain tattoo shops here in PDX, but I had a pretty simple piece I wanted done today, and thought I would give New Rose a try, since it's close to where I live and I kept hearing good things about it. From the get go, I really loved this place. Mikal greeted me when we walked in, and was super friendly. They set me up right away with Carrie (realizing of course that this doesn't always happen with walk-ins, at any shop), and she was also extremely welcoming and friendly. I liked the vibes, and whole feel of the space immediately. Everything is as spotless and clean as you would expect from any reputable tattoo shop; very laid back, very unpretentious and non-judgmental. A great recommendation for a place to go for a first tattoo. My tattoo turned out great, exactly how I wanted it! Carrie was awesome the entire time and did a beautiful job. And even though this one was fairly small and simple, I definitely would go there for something more complicated. The artist portfolios are very impressive (check out Leslie's amazing pet portraits!). My favorite thing about New Rose? I came in to get a Calvin and Hobbes tattoo. Based on the artist's portfolios and Yelp reviews, I settled on Mark Ledford at New Rose Tattoo. And boy, am I glad I did. Mark was professional, responsive and enthusiastic in the initial consult. When I came in for the tattoo, he had a couple of sketches worked out, and we picked one and ran with it. I am so happy with the result - Mark nailed it! It turned out even better than I had imagined. I'm so looking forward to getting Calvin done next month. Other than my hand falling asleep while getting my arm work done, sooo comfortable. Gorgeous new shop on about 50th and Division. Easy peasy to get to from public transit! I bought a sexy MercPerk a few months ago($40 for $80) in anticipation for my new ink after reading some glowing Yelp reviews and seeing some great portfolios on their website. I originally planned to work with Mikal based on her portfolio, but after I sent her an image of the piece I wanted, "Lilith" by John Collier, she said that she would recommend Traci because she studied art nouveau in college. I stopped in a few days later for a consultation and set a date for 3 weeks later. Traci sent me a few different versions of the tattoo that she had drawn up and they were all really beautiful and true to my vision. The shop is really clean and professional. Traci had a very light hand and I didn't bleed at all while getting my ink done. It healed in under a week and looks perfect. For a pretty large arm piece, she got done in under an hour and a half. The shop charges $120 an hour, so with my MercPerk it only ended up being $140! Plus a fat tip. I believe in fat tips. My boyfriend came with me and was so impressed that he wanted to get one that day too! Alas, they were all booked for the day. New Rose does try to accommodate walk-ins but there are only 3 or 4 artists in the shop, and they are pretty heavily booked, so it is always best to call ahead. Getting the perfect tattoo for you requires patience! Always get a consultation before getting work done. read more

I'm sure the shop here is good. This is just for our experience with Jared. My husband and I wanted two small spider tattoos. Mine is okay, I still will probably get it fixed by my normal artist in Florida. After leaving and really looking at my husband's, it looks horrible! A bunch of wonky lines that make no sense, and the spider doesn't have 8 legs? Seriously $120 for this joke? We put too much trust in him as an artist, his portfolio looked great, but he seriously couldn't have put less effort into our tattoos. The stencil looked different than what we got, features were removed/altered. These were supposed to be trip mementos, so now we get to drop several more hundred dollars on this small 1 inch behind the ear tattoo to get if fixed. Personally I would never go to him for anything else and would never recommend him. Seriously, so disappointed. read more

Sure it was just words but she was able to incorporate the handwriting of my Family members from some samples too. And she put we at ease from the moment I walked in today, and even gave me a lollipop which is surprisingly very helpful.
