As someone who had struggled with hemorrhoids for years, I finally gathered the courage to schedule a hemorrhoidectomy after an awful month-long flare up. Going in, I had a lot of anxiety as I knew how difficult the recovery from hemorrhoid surgeries could be. I decided to seek out Dr Chung as my surgeon in hopes of a smoother recovery. He provided detailed pre-op and post-op instructions which eased my anxiety a bit. I also like that he uses fancy stuff like laser, botox, and Exparel to aid in the recovery. By all accounts my surgery was successful. Nevertheless, as my luck would have it, I ended up having complications and subsequently had a really difficult months-long recovery. During that time, Dr Chung regularly checked in on me and provided professional guidance on when to get labs, when to start antibiotics, or when to seek additional medical advice. He was knowledgeable and empathetic towards my struggles. He also filled out my SDI application/extension and work accommodation without hesitation. During my times of need, having a surgeon that is easily reachable by phone was beyond helpful. Dr Chung doesn't take insurance and his fees can be a bit steep. However, if you have the means, I highly recommend him as he is truly an outstanding colorectal surgeon who puts a lot of care into his patients. read more

First of all, I have never in my life called a doctor's office and had the actual doctor pick up the phone. Dr. Chung did just that this morning. It was a refreshing, almost unheard-of level of accessibility that immediately put me at ease. He doesn't take insurance, but his fee structure is transparent and fair. I came in with a very painful issue that was causing me a lot of discomfort and bleeding. Instead of having to navigate the maze of ER visits, PCP referrals, and urgent care waiting rooms, Dr. Chung got me in the same day. I saw Dr. Chung during one of the worst health stretches I've had, and I'm really glad I found him. He was able to fit me in the same day I called, which meant a lot considering how rough things were. He was calm, clear, and didn't rush me. I saw Dr. Chung in early March to take care of some hemorrhoids. It first started watching Dr. Chung on his Youtube channel. Then it lead to calling him. He is a very thorough and caring individual. I instantly felt confident that flying from the east coast to southern California was something I had to do to rectify my problem. The person I saw on the Youtube Channel was the same person met at the door of his office. I knew I was in good hands. Surgery was the following day. After surgery , I went back to my Hotel room for next 10 days. During those days, Dr. Chung was calling me 2 times a day to make sure everything was going as planned concerning the healing process. I very much appreciated his honesty. I ended up getting a consult and Dr Chung performed a hemorrhoidectomy. This is a nerve wrecking procedure due to all the stories I've heard but Dr Chung assisted in providing pre and post operative care. He was patient to answer any questions that I had and also called me daily after the surgery to see how I was doing. So here we are again...dealing with another, literal pain in the ass. I literally couldn't move from my bed for days since I was in so much pain from my HEMORRHOIDSSS... Yes, yes, I said that word, and yes, that's plural. Idk why it's such a taboo subject; it's a common issue that haunts many. I hear Voldemort's name referenced to more often than hemorrhoids. That makes it difficult for people to search for appropriate help, which is perplexing cause I know I'm not the only one ailing like so...LOL. Shit happens, life happens. It's good to talk about things so people feel less alone... Anyways, I called Dr. Chung a couple of times again recently before committing to see him - even if I was being annoying with my erratic phone calls and concerns, Dr. Chung was patient. I believe his pricing is very fair and transparent - he disclosed all the details so I wasn't blindsided with a cost. It is $400 for a consultation that's about an hr. Considering that my co-pay would've been $80 for a specialist anyways, it felt like it wasn't that's steep or a cost. (Or maybe that's cause I got a couple of raises recently, and that's the lifestyle creep talking, ahaha. Just kidding; prioritize your health people! Don't let things exacerbate and worsen cause that'll cost more...!) The procedure for removing a hemorrhoid is a separate $400 if it's done in office. The doctor prefers banding for the procedure. Please note if you have multiple hemorrhoids that require attention, that will likely require a separate visit for ease of healing and recovery (to mitigate the risk of infection). Dr. Chung doesn't take insurance but does provide a superbill so you can open a claim with your insurance in hopes of getting reimbursement. This is a gamble, but regardless if I get reimbursed or not, I thought it was still worth the visit to have peace of mind. Dr. Chung was able to see me the same day I called, which is really nice..when I tried calling another provider what was well rated, the first available appotnment would've been 1 week out. In regards to the Dr, he has a good sense of humor and accomodating bedside manners. It's an awkward topic and consultation, but being able to joke about it with some light self-deprecating humor made the experience not so bad. Maybe this part is TMI since I'm putting the Dr on blast...I'm nosy so I asked Dr if he had hemorrhoids before and he has - got it removed by his wife (I think it was grade 3?) and supposedly he shared his experience on YouTube (I didn't watch so not sure if it's actually there). Kinda reassuring to have a doctor who can relate to your pain and better empathize, I suppose. I'm only disclosing cause if he shared his experience online, I'm assuming he wouldn't mind if I mentioned it on Yelp. Makes him seem more relatable and trustworthy as a professional. Overall, highly recommend even though I hope to never have to see Dr Chung again...or any proctologist for that matter...no offense intended, LOL. Dr. Chung is an amazing doctor. I went to him feeling scared and a little hopeless after seeing multiple GI doctors, being admitted to the hospital for 5 days, and getting referred to OB! I knew something was wrong but I was getting no answers. GI did a lot of testing while I was in the hospital but not once did anyone do an actual exam to look at the area. I had a colorectal abscess behind my colon. After asking a few questions an exam was the first thing Dr. Chung did. He immediately knew what was wrong and went over options with me. My pain was excruciating so I scheduled surgery asap. It was the best decision. I was very nervous but Dr. Chung explained everything in detail and assured me he would be there during the healing and recovery process and he was. I'm coming up on one year post op and I feel great. Dr. Chung never made me feel uncomfortable or embarrassed and eased all my fears about what was going on. I highly recommend Dr. Chung. There are a lot of great aspects to how Dr. Albert Chung runs his practice, however, when it comes to surgery, my results are horrific. Things look, feel, and function so much worse. It is worse in every way. There is not a single benefit. This surgery is the absolute worst thing that has ever happened in my life. In my experience, Dr. Chung's hemorrhoidectomy techniques cause a lot of damage; way more than you might think. That damage comes with significant side effects. I have not seen him acknowledge this anywhere, and it needs to be discussed. I am 1 year and 10 months post operation. I've seen 8 colorectal surgeons, 2 pelvic floor specialists, and have been doing everything in my power to reverse the effects of this surgery. I'm at the point where improvement seems unlikely, but if that changes, I'll update this review. It's important to me that it's accurate. read more

He also recommended Pranicura 5 as a treatment, which wokes wonders. My local doctor was interested in checking it out. I went to see Doctor Chung because I developed a very painful perianal abscess after a long bike ride. He correctly diagnosed and treated my problem on the first visit (a prior doctor had mistakenly diagnosed it as a Hemorrhoid). The corrective procedure was carried out with careful and effective use of local anesthesia so the pain I experienced was minimal. He prescribed effective pain medication and antibiotics. My pain was gone the next day and the healing process was 90% complete two weeks later. I highly recommend Doctor Chung. He has a great approach to patient care and is very direct and informative. Dr. Albert Chung is the best! I casually called in to inquire about an appointment, and was surprised to speak to the man himself. Not only that, but he was able to see me immediately! He was extremely polite and very transparent and exact about his fees over the phone before I made the decision to drive over. 30 minutes later, I'm in his office and greeted personally by him! Dr. Chung took his time to explain everything to me and even drew it out for me on his tablet. Having to discuss these types of things can be embarrassing for a lot of people, but Dr. Chung has such a friendly and down to earth demeanor that made me feel comfortable about opening up to him. Plus, I never felt rushed at all, which is extremely rare with a doctor! He made sure to ask me MULTIPLE times throughout the appointment if I had any more questions. He was even able to do the procedure immediately! I was feeling pretty nervous because I tend to be pretty resistant to local anesthesia, but Dr. Chung put me at ease and guaranteed that he would make sure I would feel no pain. I was skeptical because I've heard that promise many times from doctors before and always ended up feeling SOMETHING, but sure enough, I didn't feel a THING AT ALL. That was a first for me! This guy really knows what he's doing. He was very communicative with me and made sure I was comfortable at all times. After a short 20 minutes, it was all over, and I was so pleased with the results! And he must be amazing at stitches or something because once the anesthesia wore off, I only felt a slight amount of soreness for 2 hours at most, and haven't felt anything since then. Seriously, Dr. Chung is honestly one of the coolest doctors I've ever met. He was extremely easy to talk to and we even cracked a lot of jokes, which made for a very comfortable, no-pressure atmosphere. Had an amazing experience with my appointment with Dr Chung. His knowledge in this field is quite extensive and you can see it in his videos. He comes off friendly on screen, but he's even friendlier on the phone and in person. I found Dr Chung from his YouTube Channel, Your Friendly Proctologist. You can get a feel for his knowledge and personality from his videos. Yes, there are other proctologist in the field, but the breakdowns and the passion he exudes is why you want to visit him. I mean, this subject is very dry already and it doesn't help to work with someone robotic. He does an excellent job of explaining the root causes of your problem and how to go about fixing it. If you don't believe it, try calling another office to see if the doctor would personally give you the time of day. He is a true independent and small business in a giant pond. I had an appointment with Dr. Chung this morning. It was 100% worth the cost and I only wish I visited him sooner. I have been dealing with a frustrating issue for nearly a year and a half. I visited other providers that provided minimal support or healing. I found his YouTube channel over a year ago and soaked in all the knowledge he generously offers in his videos. Honestly that alone helped me more than a any of my previous visits to other providers! When I saw that he was local to me I wanted to see him in person, but he does not take insurance. I decided at that time (approx 10 months ago) to do a virtual zoom with him as it was pretty affordable. He helped me a lot, but in retrospect an in person was really needed so he could examine me. Fast forward to today. I decided that even though Dr. Chung doesn't take insurance that I needed to see him. He got me in within 24 hours of reaching out. He was so patient and spoke with me for a full hour about my condition. He offered an explanation of what's going on, why it's happening, and how I've only been treating the symptoms of the condition- not the root cause. I finally feel hope! He answered my many questions and kept me well informed on what he was doing during the examination. I now totally understand and support why Dr. Chung does not take insurance- this means he is able to spend more time with each patient! There are great doctors and then there is Dr. Albert Chung who take his profession to another level. Words are inadequate to describe my experience with this amazing person. My brother and I visited Dr. Chung with my father yesterday as my father was experiencing constipation from taking pain killers after a vascular surgery. In a nutshell, he went to work on my father and let's just say that he took care of the problem. Believe me when I say that the type of procedure that was being performed is something that can be described as being unpleasant at best but Dr. Chung made the experience as good as it could be. We found Dr.. Chung to be extremely knowledgeable, thorough, humble, polite, empathetic ... I can really go on and on. He took time to speak with all of us before and after the procedure.
