Came to ALC for Happy Hour at 5:30. It's a small bar space and a bit loud. All 6 tables were full as were all the seats at the bar but they put us on the wait list for the next table. Get here before 5 if you want a table. After a 35 minute wait we found seats at the bar. I had a house chardonnay ($8 HH price) and companions had a house cab ($8) and a Manhattan ($10). I had a burger ($9) which they allowed me to order med rare and it was tasty. Steakfries ($2.75) were hot and crispy. Others had the Chicken sandwich ($9.50) and Fish and Chips ($10). Onion rings are not on the menu but they have them and they are delicious. Food came out within 15 minutes and we were just able to make our theater time. The waitstaff do a great job here and the food is good. This place seems to have a loyal following and is a nice old school place with solid food and service. read more

I visited ALC Steaks during an a bachelor party trip to Austin. The restaurant accommodated our group of seven quickly and efficiently. Our waiter was quick to take our drink order (we got a couple of bottles of wine) and take our orders. We didn't wait long for anything and we were super impressed with the food. I can honestly say this might be the best steak I've ever had. I cleaned my plate easily. The wine was excellent too. So, why only 4 stars? There's nothing wrong with the restaurant really, but it didn't feel like an upscale place. Maybe, being from the northeast, my expectations are off, steakhouses up here are typically upscale. In Texas I imagine a trip to a steakhouse is more common, so maybe the decor here is normal for the area. Again, it's not bad at all, just much more casual than I'd have expected. read more

A fun goal for me is to eventually try all the great steak restaurants around Austin. I'm a little late to the game, but ALC Steak's reputation can't be ignored. On a cold Sunday night, we arrived to the small shopping center on North Lamar. Parking was abundant and quick. The restaurant was small, relatively quiet, and had a nice causal atmosphere given their price point. Our meal started out with their complimentary bread. Prepare your jaw muscles; the bread was delicious and hot, but you definitely have to chew it a bit to get it down. No matter, I gladly devoured a couple rolls. For appetizers, we were curious about their Prime Beef Sashimi. The presentation of the dish was fantastic, and the beef came out in thin slices, marinated in Asian sauces. The flavor of the beef itself was nice, but all the marinade kind of overpowered it. Made for a nice experience, but probably wouldn't order it again. We were here for their Sunday Prime Rib, and they looked amazing! The lights were a bit dim, but you can tell they were cooked perfectly, medium rare for us. The meat was nicely red from the middle of the steak to the outside edges and tender all the way through. The jalapeno horseradish was a bit too strong for my taste, but the garlic au jus sauce was pretty good. But honestly, I would've been perfectly content eating it without a sauce at all. One of the best prime ribs I've had, especially at their price of $32/$38. For my side, I tried their Flash Fried Spinach. It was essentially eating kale chips on a plate with a fork. Nice for a snack, but I would've preferred regular sauteed spinach for this meal. Service was excellent and while the prime ribs were fantastic, the other dishes were just alright. read more

I am so disappointed to write this review since we've been told for years to do a full dinner here. Pros: Good service, old school steakhouse, excellent wine recommendation, roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes were fine. Cons: All other food. I had the chicken (my stomach doesn't handle steak & I wasnt in the mood for fish) and my husband had the pork chop. I understand not ordering steak at a steakhouse isn't the greatest idea, but I at least expected a good meal (especially for the prices at ALC). I assumed I would get a chicken breast with a nice sauce, but instead received two overcooked hockey pucks of chicken with their sauce in the side. I tried to drown the chicken with the sauce to make it edible but even the sauce was terrible (maybe this is just a personal taste thing), and nothing can fix overcooked shards of chicken. My husband's pork chop was equally overcooked and inedible. We never send food back at a restaurant, but even our waiter seemed to notice we hadn't taken but maybe 3 bites off our plates. He very kindly offered to remake our food but, to be honest, my appetite was gone and I didn't want anything else from the kitchen. He insisted on bringing us a steak sampler since we had wine left on the table. Unfortunately, the steak sampler was even worse than our initial plates. We asked for medium rare and it came out extremely rare. I took four bites and spit out two of them because it was so chewy I couldn't swallow it. Seeing the steak still on the plate when we asked for the tab, our waiter offered us dessert, but I just wanted to get out of there. They did comp our food, which I expect is because we didn't eat any of it except for the vegetables & some potatoes. I'm not sure if we just went when the kitchen was having an off night, or if we have too high of expectations for pricey steakhouses, or if this place is on the cusp of going downhill. ALC Steaks has been serving Austin for about 30 years and that should be "nuff said." There's a reason why they continue to have such great success over such a long time, despite the ever growing "chain" sceen in ATX. ALC is a fantastic spot to sit for a full meal of hand cut, aged beef and wonderful sides (they also offer fish, veg, and other entrée choices). Great for a date night or an evening with friends. Pick your steak (other entrée your desire), and be sure to NOT skip on the crispy, wedge cut potatoes (so good!). The flash fried kale with parm is a fav of mine too. Sitting in the lounge and ordering from the bar menu is just as delightful. ALC has one of the best steakhouse burgers in town imho and getting the 3 steak sampler plate is a must (sirloin, tenderloin, and ribeye; comes with choice of sauce - I highly recommend the gorgonzola butter or chimichurri). The wings and spicy fried chicken sandie are also both stellar choices. Visit Monday through Friday from 4-7pm for discounted bar menu prices. It's quite a deal! Doesn't have the poshy vibe of Perry's or Capital Grille. It's all about the meat here. But I could argue you shouldn't be going to a steakhouse anyways for the atmosphere... maybe if you were trying to impress a hinge date. Anyways, we got the sweet potato clam chowder as a starter. The first few bites were delicious but the dish quickly wore out its welcome as it became a little too rich. I ordered a manhattan cocktail off menu as well and I think it paired great with meat. For the main, my GF and I actually shared the monster 30z porterhouse, which is more like 22-24 ounces of meat once you factor in the bone weight. It was absolutely delicious and definitely satisfied the steak craving that had been consuming me for some time now. My only complaint was the steak was slightly undercooked for medium rare, definitely closer to rare, especially on the strip side. I know many people have strong opinions on putting sauce on quality steak, but f it. I do what I want lol. We ordered the sauce sampler and got to try 4 homemade sauces: the red chimichurri, alc sauce, Bernaise and Makers Mark bourbon. The chimichurri was probably my favorite. For sides we got the asparagus and added the truffled bacon Mac and cheese as an extra side. The steak came with one side, which is nice because I don't like how other steakhouses just give you the meat with nothing else on the plate unless you pay extra. Like come on, I want a complete meal if I'm paying ~$60. Overall, I'd say this was good steakhouse if you're only focus is on the food. read more

This has been an austin institution for a while and it was my first time there! I went for HH and it was a great deal. Be prepared for very dim lighting but the great martinis make up for lack of natural light. We tried the wings, veggie burger, fries, and steak sampler and would recommend any of them on HH! My husband and I came here to celebrate selling our home recently. We knew it was an older establishment (there is popcorn on the walls, etc.) and not to expect the frills of newer Austin dining places. We enjoyed our steaks. He got a New York Strip, and I got a Ribeye. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the sides. I couldn't get enough of the garlic mashed potatoes and also enjoyed the baked potato and the side rolls. We stopped by for an early dinner at 5pm and it was quite empty. We had a reservation, but I didn't see a need to be honest. We did notice that around 6pm the weekend dinner crowd began to come in and the place got busy. There was a small parking lot up front that filled up quickly but seemed to provide some parking. I don't feel a need to come back but if it did I would love to try their happy hour steak sampler that is offered at the bar. The bar seemed quite small though. read more

While the house was pretty full, we recieved excellent and prompt service from Brian. He has helped us on previous visits and really knows how to take care of folks We both enjoyed filet ALC style with Carrots, Asparagus and the Mac & Cheese. They have so many wonderful accompaniments its difficult to choose. I do highly recommend trying one or more of the scratch made steak sauces. I wasn't expecting much from the outside looks of this restaurant, but they definitely delivered on quality and flavor for the appetizers, entrees, and cocktails. It was a very large cut, which was great. My son enjoyed his porterhouse. He really liked everything about it. For me, I still prefer Ruth's Chris. The issue with many steakhouses is they often overlap with menus that are essentially the same - making it a tough choice on where to go specifically. When it comes to ALC Steaks there are a few differentiating factors that may help. - 12 oz. Wagyu Denver: the Denver cut of beef is up and coming and this one is well marbled, flavorful, and relatively tender. It costs $54 which, for upscale dining, is not bad at all since wagyu often retails for $90+ at other establishments I've been to. I also got the Green Chile Creamed Corn which is my favorite side here! -10 oz. New York Strip: this one is a classic, so although nothing particularly special about this one, I did get the Truffled Bacon Mac & Cheese as my side which was also pretty good and something you don't find very often. - Chicken Fried Ahi Tuna: this one is the most unique thing here. I've never heard of fried ahi tuna, but alas it exists and it's topped with jalapeño gravy and comes with an egg roll. It's certainly a different type of vibe from the steaks, but if you love a good chicken fry and a good tuna, this is for you! - New Mexico Green Chiles: who doesn't love a jalapeño popper? Well, these are unique in that they are stuffed with goat cheese rather than cream cheese and I am here for it! - Tres Leches: this is a good way to end the dinner if you want something more refreshing (thanks to the moisture of the cake) - French 75 and Raspberry Lemontini: if you're in the mood for a bubbly lemon/gin blend then the French 75 is for you. If you want something a bit more sweet, the Raspberry Lemontini which has a vodka base is for you. Most steakhouses charge you for the side dish, but here you get one included with your steak. Additionally, I like the vibe here as you can come a bit more casually for a night out with friends or you can come dressed up for an anniversary as it's not "intimidating", but rather welcoming. All in all, I give them a 3.5/5, but round up for being a good spot to come to. They have a parking lot which is also another deciding factor. If you're a steak connoisseur like me, I suggest you come try them out! read more

My husband chose this restaurant for his birthday. He had never eaten there and we've tried a lot of steakhouses. We were intrigued by the independence (not a chain) and the extensive menu. We first visited the bar, which just didn't have the ambiance one would expect from a classy steakhouse. Not a great cocktail program here, but the martinis were good. The host/hostess did not have any information about the guitars displayed, which was disappointing. We liked the onion -- what was it called? It was like a little pizza. Delicious. Wedge was unusual and tasty. My chicken was delicious -- though I was surprised the poblano sauce served with it was cold. But all of that was more or less by the fact that my husband's ribeye was THE WORST HE HAS EVER HAD! It was super tough and gristly. We went yesterday called in a reservation for two... the place was packed we were seated at a table for two that was next to a room cut out for three tables that were all joined together to seat a large group... the group was yelling to be heard and basically drowned out anything I could say to my wife with out yelling... which I refused to do. I ordered the chicken fried steak and was very disappointed... my wife got the tuna in a bed of kale that was good but the dining experience as a whole was miserable due to the screaming folks next to us... we asked the waiter if there was any place else we could be seated but there was none... All in all it was miserable experience... the fried mushrooms were good... but Good, but not enough to change the experience... the only thing that I could see helping the situation out be to hang curtains on the walls and dividers to deaden the noise. read more

Not a fan at all. Driving in the place was run down and dilapidated, never a good sign. They should change the name to AC steaks given that was what was blowing on me and my food the entire time. Was surprised not to see Freon as a side. Mentioned it twice, no one did a thing. Almost famous crab cake is only famous for having caused me digestive issues all night. Crab cakes are tired and these particular ones are exhausted. Caesar was very oily and almost no Parmesan. Ny steak was entirely average. Only bright spot was service although our waiter did have a full beard, something I am surprised is allowed by the health department. read more

Okay, I'm back to loving this place again! Last year we had an experience that wasn't very pleasant and I was kind of surprised that the waiter didn't do a little bit more than he did to resolve it but let's let bygones be bygones. We had a dinner reservation for two of us for our anniversary and we invited a very close friend of ours to join us. The restaurant was not too busy, and our waiter Michael was exceptional tonight. I had the 12 oz ribeye with a loaded baked potato and my husband had the 6 oz filet mignon with sliced carrots. We also shared a bottle of wine with our friends because of this special night. Everything went very well, Michael took such good care of us and we appreciated him checking on us from time to time and making sure we were having a good time. With the appetizer, Caesar salad, and the stuffed peppers, I couldn't finish my steak but I took it home and it was still good the next day. We have always loved going to this Austin restaurant tradition for several years now. And will continue to do so in the future. read more

I love the salads here. I know that's kind of an odd way to start reviewing a place primarily known for its meat, but they serve fresh produce of good quality. I'm not much a salad guy either, so it's much more impressive coming from me. I often go for the Rib Eye and regular mashed potatoes. I'd go for garlic at other places, but their regular mashed are better (you always need more garlic than you think). And I can't control my grabby hands when they bring out their bread and butter - they always crisp it for you if you ask :D I've been a longtime customer there and the owner and staff are very nice and do their best to provide great service.
