The wife and I saw Seinfeld on May 2nd and couldn't find a decent place to eat at 9:30 at night... then we realized we were a block away from ALC. I hadn't been in years, but late on a Saturday night, they were still happy to seat us and treat us to a fantastic dinner and end to our date night. The restaurant was still busy but not crowded, and the experience was top-notch. The service was very cheerful and attentive. My wife doesn't drink but they are thoughtful enough there to serve Kaliber and O'Douls so she could enjoy the evening while I had a great Sierra Nevada Pale Ale on tap in a special pint glass. For appetizers we had the goat-cheese-and-cilantro-stuffed green chiles, and it was delightful. Unique tastes, perfect amount of heat, solid central-Texas flavor. We split a Caesar salad that was unremarkable except for it's size. She had the 10oz filet and I had the 10oz strip. Both were cooked to perfection and both were exceptionally high-quality cuts of meat that were full of flavor without having to be heavy on the seasoning. She had the garlic mashed potatoes for the side, which were solid but nothing exciting, and I had the truffle bacon mac and cheese, which was ANYTHING but average! A must-try at this restaurant. We finished the evening off with a fudge-brownie pie a la mode, and we could not have been happier with the experience when we left. Austin has a lot of steak houses to choose from these days. We were on the hunt for a good lamb chop with mint jelly paired with a good scotch to celebrate my late father's would be 90th birthday. Only able to see a Buffalo Lamb Chop appetizer on their online menu, I called early on a Saturday afternoon and the manager, Jordan, answered my call. Not only did he assure me that if I brought the mint jelly, they would prepare the chop, but he made a last minute reservation for us at our chosen time. When we arrived, the hostess was already aware, as was our server, Maren. The service was absolutely top notch from phone call to final bill and everything tasted marvelous. They even recognized Dad's birthday with a complimentary sweet treat, as if he was with physically with us. This sort of proactive customer service, fantastic food and comfortable environment was exactly what we needed and we are very grateful to ALC for a truly wonderful dinner. read more

The only bad thing was my drink was weak and watered down, but everything else was great. This is a mixed review. My wife and I ate at ALC last night. The service was exemplary. My steak, a 14oz ribeye, was great! It was cooked just the way I ordered it. It was thick, juicy, with just the right amount of marbling. My wife's tomato basil salmon was the worst dish she has ever had. It was so dry she could not eat it and did not ask for a box to bring it home. Her kale was so spicy hot that she could not eat it either. Really great stuff here! I've been here multiple times and have never had a problem getting seated on time and with the wait staff. I've had the surf and turf and regular steak before and both times they were cooked to perfection! I highly recommend the grilled tomato and red onion salad. While it's not a traditional salad it tasted great and looked so pretty. I highly recommend making a reservation on Open Table on busier weekend nights. I'll be going back! read more

I tried the ALC Steak Frittes at trailer food Tuesdays and they were delicious! The chimichirri sauce was bomb and the steak was really juicy. The fries were nice and crisp and the service quick! Next time I'll be sure to go to their restaurant. Would def recommend! read more

Amazing happy hour -- try the buffalo lamp chops and steak sampler. For someone that is not much of a meat-eater, I'm definitely selective and picky when eating the red stuff. They know what they're doing here... Plus the bartenders are very professional and friendly. On another occasion, we went for dinner and my husband ordered the steak and I had the lobster. I wouldn't recommend the lobster as it wasn't what I was expecting. It basically tasted like a very large grilled shrimp. It wasn't bad, but for that price tag, I had something else in mind. My husband loved the NY strip and said it was a quality cut of meat, cooked perfectly and the side sauces were diverse and creative. Back in December, my date and I decided we wanted to have a fancy steak dinner before hitting the town. We scheduled a reservation for 5:30pm, braved the rain and traffic, and arrived right on-time. To my surprise, we pulled into the parking lot and were able to find one of many spots directly in front of the restaurant. I had expected to have to hunt for spots or rely on valet to get in the door, but no! Once in the restaurant, we were greeted with very friendly and helpful staff. The bar area offers a full dinner menu, in addition to a bar menu with burgers, fries, and the like. I was very impressed to discover that ALC offers great prices during happy hour: Mon - Fri, 5-7pm. They're only available in the bar area but, since we got there early, it wasn't an issue. The food is incredible. The Black and Blue Salad is delicious, and was a perfect appetizer to split between the both of us. The New York Strip was cooked perfectly, and was good with their sauce sampler. We paid a little bit more for a "second plate" and split the steak up, getting our own sides. This was a nice way of enjoying high quality food without overeating. One quick note: If you get the sauce sampler, I would recommend getting it first thing so you can try it with all your appetizers in addition to the main course. Loaded baked potato? Yes, please. For dessert, the pumpkin praline [pastry] was amazing! Our server boxed it up to-go and recommended that we heat it up a little and add some vanilla ice cream. She was right! All in all, we had a fantastic experience at ALC, and can't wait to get back out there for round two! read more

We had a great experience from the second we stepped in the door. The manager warmly welcomed us in and the hostess was also very friendly. Once we were seated or waiter was attentive and helpful. This is simply an exquisite location in Austin to get a fine steak. As a local institution, it's pedigree is assured, and the food is reliably superb. I typically get the filet mignon, though at times I may opt for a porterhouse, if I'm feeling particularly peckish. They do a wonderful job of cooking the steak exactly as you order it, which I've found to be a problem at other places. If I have any quarrels to offer, it would be that their draft selection is fairly limited in scope, though they do have a number of excellent bottled beers, and the wine list is substantial enough. read more

After working in Austin for a few months we had a serious hankering for some good steak. A little bit of web searching and we found AL&C. What made it appealing was it being one of the last few family run places . . . must be good to be in business for so long no? We came in on a weekday, probably about 8:30pm and was lucky to get a nice parking space just outside the restaurant. The bar was busy, lots of folks from the Capital (yes, you can tell by how people dress). Was a little disappointed with some of the dipping sauces but they do serve a great steak. Rib Eye was just right and really didn't need anything fancy on it. I thought it was better than Ruth Christi's or Flemings. The tables were a little small but that's what makes it intimate! It would be a great place to take my boss but he would probably joke and say he must be paying me too much ;-) read more

The only time I have had a worse dining experience was when a waitress at a low-rent diner tasted the soda she was handing me to double check whether it was pepsi or coke. A group of colleagues and I met for dinner and drinks at Austin Land and Cattle on a Tuesday evening. Business at the restaurant was clearly slow. All seven of us ordered dinner and drinks. I had the misfortune to order a very sorry excuse for garden salad. Then, no more than a minute after paying our bill to the server, we were approached by the host and quite loudly and rudely informed us, "I'm sorry folks but I'm going to have to ask you to get up and leave right now." Not just leave, but "get up and leave right now." Each of us was shocked and rightly-mortified. None of us had given the staff any reason to be concerned or offended by us as guests. We were having casual dinner conversation and were not loud or boisterous in anyway, nor were we intoxicated as none of us ordered more than a single drink, many had had no drinks at all. Each of us were shocked and embaressed. The host proceeded to inform us that he was doing this because he was expecting our party to be larger and since some of the others did not show up, we needed to get up and be on our way. If a party of seven pleasant customers is not worthy of courtesy and respect, I don't know who is. The host claimed that they were others who were waiting for tables, which was a flat out lie, there were vacant table throughout the restaurant and NO ONE waiting in front for a table. If you want terrible food and horrendous customer service, go to Austin Land and Cattle. read more

Great food and atmosphere. Arrived during happy hour before dinner started and decided to sit at the bar. Our bartender Zach was wonderful! He made great recommendations that complimented my food choices. They have a great Happy Hour menu. Full of food and alcohol, the selection was good. I enjoyed the steak sampler with the Makers Mark Sauce or the Chimichanga sauce recommended by Zach. It was so delicious I ordered it twice! Prices were decent, not overpriced. I come from a family of cattle raisers here in Texas. My taste for steak you could say is pretty picky. I've had Ruth's Chris many times.. $80 steaks that are amazing at Mortons Steakhouse and many many many others here in Austin, Texas, and around the world. I judge my steaks on meat alone. If it can't stand on it's own two feet then it's called something else. No sauces.. Just a good rub and a great way to cook it. With that said.. I would hold Austin Land and Cattle steaks up against any steak in the quoted "top 10" steakhouses. In my eyes, my tummies eyes, and my tasted buds have all had a conference and can agree that steak beats them all. As long as it's NOT based on atmosphere and steak "sauces". This is hands down.... This place has been around forever. But, it is totally amazing food. The steaks are seriously unparalleled and, more importantly, the sides/salads are all also delicious. Unfortunately, i find that some of the steakhouses in austin do a pretty good job on the steak and then totally fall down on the job when it comes to the rest of the meal. ALC is pretty much impeccable all around on the food front. The atmosphere lacks a little bit of swank that is achieved by some of the other steakhouses in town. So, work that into the calculus. If you're going just for food, ALC is your best bet. If it's a super special night out, you may want to pick something that's a little more modern. read more

First off The parking is very limited and tight!! There is good tight and bad tight, this is Rosie O'donnell in a tutu tight!! Not good!! Ding me was my first thought when we parked! When entering you walk through the bar area up to the hostess stand. The bar was very busy and had food selections in it. Next visit we are gonna hang out there only and will update this review. We were seated quickly, but waited 11-12 minutes for a server to show to order our first drink and after the steaks arrived never got asked for another drink! She literally disappeared! This could kill a binge drinker like me!! Not much of a wine selection, but it was fine, the beer was ...well beer! We started with an Ahi appetizer and it was not great. Outback Steakhouse blows it away if that gives you some idea. We shared a large filet and they split it up for us. It was very good! Cooked perfect. We tried several of the steak sauces 4 for $10 and they really were not very good at all. Their salad was ok but the crunchy or crispy spinach was awesome. We added two jumbo shrimp to dinner, and WOW!!! They are 5 star rated!!!! Amazing flavor!! We will go back, but have to admit for the price this cost we had hoped for a much better overall dining experience. Too many misses on our visit for a higher rating. read more

I will start by saying this place has the best seared tuna I have had in Austin. Every time I have had it here it has been perfect. I am not a meat eater so I can't speak for anything other than their seafood or veggie stuff but that stuff is awesome! I am also really impressed with the wine portions. I don't mind spending money on wine as long as it is a decent size glass and it was. After two glasses I really should have gone home. I didn't but I should have. :) Service is excellent too. New year's dinner at Austin Land and Cattle. We had a large group so it could go well or go downhill fast depending on the service. Well I am here to say that ALCC did not disappoint. We arrived on time and it was only a few minutes and we were seated at our table. Our waiter was exceptional got our drink orders fast and had bread and butter on our table in the meantime. To waiter: Thanks for the good service, and thanks for messing with my buddy for wearing that fur collared jacket. He knew he was wrong! I ordered the New York strip, rare, cuz I love it bloody baby! For my topping i ordered the Gorgonzola butter, it was fantastic, my steak was cooked rare just as i ordered. If you are a lover of rare steak, even the best steakhouses can over cook, so it was a pleasant surprise to find that they did not. The Malbec I got complemented the steak wonderfully! The sides left a lot to be desired, the potatoes were ok, I can say the same for the vegetables. The poached pear for desert was divine! No complaints there. I am giving Austin Land and Cattle four stars instead of five for the issue of not up to par sides. That being said, this will not deter my coming back! read more

ALC Steaks, previously known as Austin Land & Cattle, is a blend of 1960s decor and every decade since then. The quality of the food is exceptional, but I don't really rate the preparation, prices, and service at a four. Steaks range from about $30-$40 in price, which is fine if they deserve that. Steak flavor was good, but I ordered mine medium rare and it was a little overcooked, which also meant a little dry. Entrees are served with sides of spinach, julienne carrots, and potatoes. Very nice to go somewhere and get a healthy well-rounded meal. However, dinner salad was $8, guess I was paying for homemade dressing and two homemade french bread/parmesan croutons. I think I still would have rated 4 stars had it not been for the extremely slow service (around 8:30 on an uncrowded Thursday night) and the 1950s style hard wood (but sometime rickety) uncomfortable chairs. My goodness, if you're going to make your patrons wait forever for service, at least make them comfortable while they wait. I won't be going back. I've had better steaks at Texas Land & Cattle, although the atmosphere there is very chain restaurant. But I was definitely not impressed enough to go back and spend $50/person (no alcohol). read more

I've been thinking about whether to write this review or not and finally decided this experience should be told to future potential customers. ALC has been my favorite steak house in Austin for many years. It was my go to place for celebrations, and we raved about it to all our friends. One very good friend even gave me a gift certificate to ALC as a thank you for doing some work for his organization. When some new friends moved to town, we invited them to meet us for dinner at ALC. That dinner took place in June, 2016. It was one of the most embarrassing and unsatisfying dinners I've ever had and much below what I remember as ALC's formerly impeccable service. I did not say much that night in part because we had new friends with us and I didn't want to make any kind of scene. But after sleeping on it and thinking about the experience, I wrote to the manager and to the owners with a detailed story about the evening. I asked for them for another gift card to use at a future dinner at ALC. And they refused. To their credit, they did apologize for the terrible service, but frankly that was not enough. After spending over $200 for dinner that in my case was partially inedible, at a place the supposed quality of ALC, I wanted them to want me to come back for another meal. Apparently the customer experience is no longer important to ALC owners or managers and that is not ok with me for a restaurant that thinks it's a fine dining steakhouse. Here's a brief overview of the offending evening. We arrived for our reservation and were seated in a very noisy small room in the back (only 4 tables fit in this room). We could hardly hear each other. The noise just echoed off the walls. The place was busy and we understood that this was just our bad luck to be seated in the small room. It was clearly foreshadowing the type of dinner we were about to have, but we were excited to be there and didn't heed the warning. My husband had been raving about the chopped steak, and that was his game plan for dinner. Our guests asked the server about the specials and mentioned they were thinking about the chopped steak, at which time the server said "I would not get the chopped steak. It's really just a big hamburger." Well that embarrassed my husband, of course. But he went ahead and ordered the chopped steak, as did the husband of our guests. They both did enjoy it, despite the faux-pas of the server. The wife of our guests didn't order it. She changed to the special pork chop, and said afterwards that it was good, but the chopped steak (which she tasted) was much better. I ordered a steak, and asked for it to be cooked to a pink color. The server seemed confused because I told him the color I wanted the meat...pink...and he asked if that was medium. I replied that I didn't know what the kitchen would call it, but I didn't want it too rare or too well done, but pink. The steak I got was part perfect and mostly rare...and I was not able to eat that part of it. The waiter didn't even notice or ask if it was cooked to the right temperature. For my side dish, I asked about the Brussel Sprouts, one of my favorite veggies, and something I had not had at ALC before. The server told me they were flash fried and delicious. So I ordered them. They came out raw and inedible. We ordered salads w/ dressing on the side, to start. Again, the server must not have been paying attention as the salads came out covered in dressing. After our dinner, we ordered coffee and dessert. We got both in a timely manner (a good thing!), but we had to flag down the server several times for coffee refills. He was no where to be seen. Never, throughout our entire evening, did we see a manager or any other person in charge. No one was around to see if guests were getting what they expected. Now, under normal circumstances, in a less affluent restaurant, most of these issues would have been just 'business as usual'. But ALC was always a place where the service was impeccable, we were made to feel important and cared for, and the food was beyond good. Not that night. I'm really disappointed that the service was mediocre at best, no manager in sight to visit us and see how we were doing, food (in my case) was not edible and the server didn't even notice, and a room that was so noisy we had to yell across the table to be heard. That's why I slept on it and then decided to write the management and ask for a credit for another try. I have never asked for a 'refund' on a dinner before and was reluctant to do so. Apparently the management doesn't care that a long time customer had a bad meal. That's just my bad luck and their new 'business as usual.' So, a warning to future ALC customers...the service and the quality can be great at ALC. But then again you might get an experience like we did. Are you willing to risk a $200++ meal on that uncertainty? read more
