A friend treated me here for dinner the other night for my birthday that went down recently. My NY Strip was cooked the way I ordered it. The service was above average. Although my steak was cooked properly it wasn't $32 quality. It had some stringy bits. I'm truly sorry but for a steak of that price it should practically melt in my mouth. Tip #1: If you're craving a steak and have a flexible date night, go on Sunday night. They have a pre-fixe menu that is $35/per and is much better pricing than the regular menu (includes app, dessert). I tried the steak, salmon, caesar salad, fried mushrooms, berries, chocolate cake. Steak: perfect. just perfect. The salmon was really well flavored, a bit on the sweet side if that isn't quite your thing. The caesar salad portion is a joke...and what's weirder is that the server said it was his favorite. Maybe he likes 4pcs of lettuce + 2 shreds of parmesan. The fried mushrooms were good, but nothing crazy spectacular. The desserts were typical. But the steak is where it's at. I'd hope so for a "signature Austin Steakhouse". read more

Happy hour prices are amazing, but there's not a lot of room at the bar so you'll have to scramble for seats. The beef prime sashimi has always been good and I highly recommend it. The steak sampler is amazing and lets you try a few different tastes. Always get medium rare or rare because the pieces are really small so it cooks more than you'd expect. The ribeye sandwich was amazing. The crowd is always very friendly and conversational and the staff was amazing. They have a lot of patience and kept up with our order flawlessly as well. Everything was good about the dining experience besides how my steak was cooked. Asked for med rare, got med well. I'm not one to complain much so it really wasn't that big of a deal. ALC Steaks - Ribeye & Shrimp - Steakhouses Near Me - Austin, Texas

I was super excited to visit a steakhouse in Austin and went with a large party. We ordered sampler apps (3 of them). The shrimp was good as were the mushrooms. Then the steak came. It had a seasoning on it that tasted good but made my steak look orange and not so appetizing. The sautéed mushrooms that came with it were bland and plain. I cut into the steak, took a few bites and quickly noticed that the steak was cooked blue / rare and not medium rare. I hate sending a steak back but I can't eat a blue steak. Guess what? It came back medium well....seriously?!? It's a shame that a steakhouse in Texas can't seem to cook a steak to order....seems like a sin!!! The steak was initially cooked like an ahi tuna steak with just a char on each side of the steak with the middle completely raw. read more

The last time I visited Austin Land & Cattle Company was in 2007 or 2008, so if it's changed since then that's too bad. One of the best steak experiences I've ever had occurred at Austin Land & Cattle. The year was 2005. I had just finished Marine Corps Boot Camp in San Diego, CA and I was back in Texas on 10 days of leave. I decided to drive down to Austin to visit my best friend, and knowing that I would be in the mood for a hearty, big steak, he suggested we visit Austin Land & Cattle. I was of accord. I ordered the 28 oz. porterhouse steak. 28 oz. is just under two pounds. It's a lot of meat. The steak was huge, and impressively enough, it was cooked expertly. It wasn't too tough, and there wasn't too much cartilage or sinew running through it. Perfect. The side of garlic mashed potatoes was quite good as well. In addition to the food being delicious, the service was professional, attentive, and quick, and the ambiance of the restaurant is nice and refined. I might go as far as saying that Austin Land & Cattle Company is a landmark that all Texans should visit at least once. Well... even if not all Texans, all Austin Texans. If you're a big fan of steak, visit Austin Land & Cattle Company. It may be a little pricey, but I believe it's worth it. Enjoy! read more

Note: A friend pointed out that i had this mistakenly posted for another area steakhouse. I've re-posted for the correct establishment, this was for a experience on 6/2010 I want to love this place, in fact I used too. However my last experience tripped me up, and will likely keep me from returning for quite some time, if ever. My wife and I have long held this as the "nice but affordable place to get a good steak downtown" venue. So when my parents were in town for our wedding we decided to take them there, as we didn't want a lot of pomp and circumstance, just good food. The service was TERRIBLE, we waited about 25 minutes before we ever saw our waiter, then another 10+ before he brought us our water, and even more to bring the alcohol we ordered. Sometime after that we finally got the chance to order. At this point I was already pretty pissed, my last meal as a "free man" and the place wass killing it!!! Well our food finally arrived, except mine was wrong. The waiter promised to bring out the correct sides while I started on my steak. AFTER we had all finished eating and been sitting a few minutes he then brought out my side dishes. Too little, far too late. The part that was infuriating is we watched table after table receive far better service than ours, even those being waited on by our own server. I hate that a single server left such a sour taste in my mouth about the place, sometimes that is just the way the cookie crumbles, sadly. This was a charming, old Austin staple and I just loved it. The service was excellent and the filet out of this world. Our group loved the stuffed hatch chili peppers and the fried mushrooms. Last week my wife and I chose Austin Land and Cattle (aka ALC Steaks) for a 30th-anniversary dinner. Here are the good and the bad of our visit. The good: Our waiter, Michael, was mostly fine: both attentive and helpful (but see below). We asked him for wine recommendations, and the samples he provided persuaded us to order his recommendations Our steaks were excellent; I chose the 16-oz. ribeye, with gorgonzola butter sauce; my wife, the 6 oz. filet mignon. Both steaks were ordered as "medium" and delivered satisfactorily. to that specification. As sides, I had a "fully loaded" baked potato; my wife, the flash-fried spinach. Each of us found our choice delicious. My wife chose the grilled tomato and red onion salad; she found it very tasty, just as I did the small sample of it that she shared with me. For desserts, I had the fudge brownie pie à la mode; my wife, the crème brûlée. Our choices were acceptable, though not great. The bad: Though we had specified in making our reservation that the occasion was for us an anniversary, there was no recognition by the hostess or Michael of our anniversary. We found this disappointing and definitely not up to the standards ordinarily offered by competitive restaurants when we specify a dinner as marking a special occasion for us. The very bad: I chose what the menu identified as a "Caesar Salad". It was NOT A CAESAR SALAD! For nearly a century (see Wikipedia), a caesar salad has been widely understood to be "a salad of romaine lettuce and croutons dressed with parmesan cheese, lemon juice, olive oil, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and black pepper. It is traditionally prepared tableside." For what I have to call an infuriating marketing decision, ALC Steaks has CHOSEN TO LABEL as a "Caesar Salad" a salad consisting of romaine leaves in an ordinary, and very bland, oil-and-vinegar dressing, with two slices of toasted French baguette bread, not croutons. ALC Steaks does NOT prepare this highly disappointing salad tableside. Furthermore, when ordering the salad, I asked Michael to include anchovies. He replied that ALC Steaks does not provide anchovies and had none to offer me. Further still, I think Michael should have taken my question as a clue that I was trying to order something different from what ALC Steaks was going to provide me. He did not clarify the true nature of the restaurant's MISLEADLINGLY LABELLED "Caesar Salad". Had he done so, I would have ordered a different salad, probably the tomato and red onion salad that my wife chose. When I complained after my first bite of the non-caesar salad, Michael said he would comp the salad -- and rightly so. But that did not keep me from being disappointed with part of my wife's and my anniversary dinner. And it does not change my feeling that the restaurant's decision to apply the name "Caesar Salad" to what no first-time patron of the restaurant would rationally expect to bear such a MISLEADING NAME is a seriously wrong and -- to me -- EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING marketing decision! read more

Great place for some real all american steak. On the pricer side without the class to accommodate it, either way, this was some real amazing food. Its priced up there with a Don Pepe or Tao and just as good. Steak flavored and prepared better than most steaks around. Served with your choice of side, mine was the vegetables/carrots. These carrots are sauteed in honey and sprinkled with basil... one of my very own home recipe favorites! The steak was cooked to perfection! I had tried the sweet potato clam chowder.... AMAZING!! I think I enjoyed that more than the actual steak!!! However, beware of the servings. They are very disproportionate. A cup, is the size of your grandmothers tea cup and a bowl is the size of a large dog bowl. It is an amazing soup but if you're a female and fill up easily, this will be a big enough meal in itself for the night. I got the bowl, very bad decision. I wasn't able to enjoy all of my dinner because I filled up on the app! It was amazing however :) The alcoholic mixed beverages however, are worth skipping. They were very sweet with very little alcohol. On Sundays, they have price fixed meals for $25 bucks. It gets you an appetizer, entree and desert. You don't get the fliet however but you do get a porterhouse and other cuts. If you can handle the high fat steaks, they are very good for what they offer. Attire, well, for the price of what these steaks go for, you would think people would come dressed in jacket attired. But oh no, I can't tell you how many people showed up in just tee shirt and jeans. I guess Texas is just a lot more laid back then what us east coasters are used to. Great food though. Best, by far, Happy Hour in ATX. And fantastic food. They age their own beef, which is some of the best in town. But what really counts is the service. These folks just make the dining experince exceptional. On a recent visit, my Rib Eye looked like it had been prepared "black and blue", but was actually more medium well with a hard char. I had just cut into the beast, and was going to ask (politely) to replace said steak when our waitress, from behind me reached over, grabbed my plate, and shrieked "that's not black and blue", and raced off to the kitchen. Never, have I had a meal replaced so fast!!! Without even asking or having to explain. The side dishes are enormous (share a couple, and you'll have plenty left over), the menu selections are varied enough for meat lovers and non meat lovers (you know who are) to dine together and both get some great grub. A few years ago, Scottie and Theresa helped me plan a small (25 people) surprise Birthday Party for my wife. What a fantastic event. The Buffalo Lamb Chops are worth fighting over, and the Shrimp were the size of my fist. With a platter of small sandwiches and a Crudités platter. What a hit. Hands down best steak I've ever had, and this was on multiple occasions. The steak has perfect flavor and doesn't even need the delicious steak sauces they offer. However those are very good as well. The garlic one is my personal fav, but they're all good. The steak is cooked to perfection is and is very tender and juicy. I've gotten the filet each time and always cooked just right. Also the sides are great. I especially love the Julian carrots. So crisp and sweet without being too sugary. The potatoes are large and the toppings are plentiful. My only complaint is the parking. Usually there are no available spots in the small shared parking lot and often you'll have to park across and down the street. read more

Hands down the best customer service we have ever received. Our server, Josh, took care of us from steak suggestions to dessert suggestions. He walked us through our entire meal and we enjoyed every item he suggested. Our ribeyes were cooked perfectly, the mac and cheese was amazing and the asparagus with chimichurri sauce was the perfect complement to my steak. The creme brulee had that oh so satisfying crack. My favorite fine dining restaurant in Austin hands down. I'm a Texas native but have been in Austin close to 10 years. I imagine this place is a relic of Austin past - very fine, lacking pretentiousness. Steaks, chicken, fish, soup, salad, cocktails, desert - all are 5 stars top notch! Never had anything less than delicious. Equally great is the ambiance. Dress to the 9's or come in casual and it's all the same here. GREAT service from waiters, bussers, bar tenders & management. Parking sucks...that's about the only negative. Service was great - nothing over the top but nice friendly service that you would expect. Food was fantastic - between our party we had the escargot, new york strip, filet, and gulf shrimp. All of us were really impressed. I am sure that ALC is quite pricey by local standards, but it's an incredible deal to me. 22 oz bone in ribeye for $40???!! With a delicious side?!! Definitely recommended. I've eaten here several times and have enjoyed almost everything I've tried. I give 4 instead of 5 starts because sometimes I feel the service is a bit lacking considering the prices. The waitstaff is actually very polite and warm, but maybe a little scatterbrained (e.g., they forget to bring you drinks; sometimes they don't come by the table for a long time). Now that I got the negative out of the way, the place really has some pros: -Funky, laid back atmosphere: The decor is eclectic and very Austin. Definitely more charm than the average upscale steakhouse chain. -Try the duck! The chili glaze...the tender, juicy meat...if you're not in the mood for steak, I highly recommend it. Goes great with the sweet potato fries. -Their steaks are more than adequate and not grossly overpriced. -I'm a fan of their tomato-onion salad. Stacks of tomato and mild red onion, with blue cheese layered in the mix, all doused in a tart balsamic dressing. Drool...Best to get in the summer when tomatoes are in season. -Caramel bundt cake. Warm, gooey comfort dessert with a hunk of vanilla ice cream. What can go wrong? I will most likely keep going here for years to come. Not much of an ambiance per-se, but nothing that would turn you off either. Service, absolutely fantastic. Food....that is definitely the star in this establishment. Cooked exactly as it should, the pepper encrusted steak was fantastic. Sides were ok; unfortunately we could hardly move, let alone try the dessert. An absolute outstanding service with a smile that comes from heart! This is how a service in a steakhouse must be everywhere! Always at the right time but never too rushing. We came here for a Saturday evening dinner in a group of 5 and we loved it. The quality of the steaks was simply as it should be. I ordered a medium done Sirloin. And it was great. One side dish is included and well dimensioned. Ask to place the side dish on an extra bowl and not on the plate directly. That way you can share with your mates. The atmosphere is decent and reflects the price level of $$$. Surely a place to recommend for anybody who lives in Austin or plans to travel there! read more

Good place for steak. I had the NY strip. Bummer it doesn't come with salad and potato but most high end steak houses do this ala carte. The place could use a bit better lighting as it's really dark in there. The other weird thing was we went during happy hour but were not allowed to take out happy hour drink into the dining room. We had to sit at a little table and drink it. I found that very odd. There is limited parking in front so make sure you're parking in the right place. read more

Service was good but food was just okay. I sat down & immediately received water & bread. The rolls were the best part of the meal. Crispy on the outside & soft & chewy inside with great flavor! I started with the tomato & onion salad. It would have been perfect if it wasnt drowning in the balsamic dressing. The tomatoes were the perfect ripeness & the blue cheese crumbles added the perfect touch but the flavors were over powered by the excess dressing. For the main course I ordered the trout (of which I am an expert as I catch this fish fresh & cook it as well as order whenever a restaurant has it on the menu). The fish had no flavor until I added butter, salt & pepper & then it was passable. The carrots were cold & the spinach okay. I would come back to give them a second chance based on the rolls, potential of the salad & the service & can hopefully give a higher rating next time read more

Ate here with two others my last time in Austin on 09/24/2014. Food was fantastic. We had the Buffalo lamb chops and Spicy Blue Crab Confit for appetizers. Both were great. I had the sirloin soup which was very good and the bone in rib-eye which was also very good. I highly recommend the truffle bacon mac and cheese. Over all everyone really enjoyed their food and our waiter was fantastic. I would highly recommend giving this place a try. read more

Other restaurants need to learn a thing or 10 about how to have awesome service. Our waiter forgot his name (had 2 full tattoo sleeves) was great. Was recently at ALC with five other folks to celebrate a special occasion. I walked out scolding myself for not coming more often. Food was outstanding. I had the chopped steak and asparagus. Steak was cooked to my liking and the onions piled on top were maybe the best sautéed onions I've ever had. Asparagus was perfect as were the dinner rolls and steak soup. I liked the soup, but was surprised by the level of spiciness. Service was good and the evening was excellent. read more

Put simply, this is the best steak you will find in Austin. I don't eat a lot of beef anymore, so when I do eat a nice steak, it has to be damn good. AL&C seasons the steak just enough to let the real flavor come through. Otherwise, it is always cooked to perfection. On top of this, they offer some delicious appetizers and great veggies. The atmosphere is spot on Austin, with a mix of casual to nice. In essence, come as you are and we'll make sure you're treated well. I've heard the desserts are good, at least my son thinks so. I've just never had enough room after a steak meal to try one. Oh, and please don't confuse this restaurant with Texas Land and Cattle. They are NOT the same thing. read more

This was an unlikely pick for me, as I've been beef free for nine years or so, but when a restaurant is good...it's good. And it was good. The service was great...considering the waiter could have seen us, admittedly underdressed (I'm talking flannel and jeans underdressed), and written us off from the beginning. The other two peeps along for the ride needed some brushing up insofar as cuts of meat and all, and he was more than helpful to steer them in the right direction based on their tastes. I went with the pork chops. They were incredibly tasty, lean, but not too chewy. The sauce was honey based, but had an aftertaste with a serious spicy kick. It was served with a baked potato topped with the works (bacon, sour cream, chives, all the usual suspects), along with spinach and carrots. The latter was great, smothered in butter and with a touch of sweetness (maybe brown sugar?). I didn't get a chance to sample the wine menu as my dinner companions were not so much into dinner drinks...but any restaurant with Real Ale's Vanilla Porter on tap is a-o-k with me. Took a gander at the dessert menu, but nothing special jumped out, so passed. The only things keeping this place from a five star rating is it seemed a little pricey for what you get (although kudos for providing sides with your entree as opposed to a la carte) and it gets pretty noisy in the dining room which can potentially interfere with your conversation if you're company isn't as boisterous as those around you. read more

This was our first time there, and we were really looking forward to it. And ALC certainly didn't disappoint. For our appetizer we had the New Mexico Green Chilis which were stuffed with goat cheese. Nice combination. I would definitely get it again, and I'm usually wary of spicy foods. The complementay rolls were also very good; fresh out of the oven. For our entree we both chose the 8oz Filet Mignon with a baked potato. The spinach and julienne carrots were very good. I added Bernaise sauce for my steak. Dilectable. I also added on 4 shrimp cooked in a Shiner Bock batter. They were huge. Well worth the upsale. They came with a dipping 'sauce' that had, mayo, chipotle, and other ingredients. I asked our waitress Megan about wine pairings, and she suggested two (a Cab and a Malbec) which I got to sample first. I chose the Cab. I can't remember the name but it was very good; no aftertaste. It was $10/glass. Our server took good care of us by checking in several times. She didn't rush us at all. She was well worth her $25 tip. ALC is quite probably my best steak experience in a long time. Can't wait to go back again, maybe for Happy Hour. read more

My second time here proved to be a WINNING experience. I love this place! To define the ambiance; Its a fine dining place without the snootiness. A great, fun, chill vibe at the bar as you walk in, with a nice, relaxed atmosphere in the dining area beyond. Our server Meagan was incredible and took very good care of us. The shiner bach beer battered mushrooms are a great start. I had the ribeye cooked medium rare and was heavenly. Giggity giggity, I wanted to slap somebody it was so delicious! The only possible draw back if there was one, are the mash potatoes. They seemed a little on the thin/runny side as the consistency of instant taters. Perhaps they ran out of the real ones and had to sub. temporarily. All in all, it was a great experience. Wine selection was super as well. I will be a returning customer. read more
