This restaurant has a great vibe, situated in an old home. The food is great, we've been there multiple times and always loved our meals. The service is good, we've been there with our family and with a large group, and they have always been very patient and friendly. Alchemy is in my top 3 favorite places for a dressy dinner when we are visiting Ashland. The only slightly negative thing I have to say is that we were there celebrating a birthday once and at the end of the meal our server brought out a candle on a small, flat ceramic dish. The birthday girl's comment was, "You just spent $300 on dinner and all they brought me for my birthday was a candle?" It seemed a little chintzy since most places will give you an actual dessert, not just a candle, but at least they brought a candle. Other than that tiny little thing, we still love to eat here and will be back when visiting in the future. read more

Nice place for a date night in Ashland, which we stopped by on our drive from Seattle to the Bay Area. I ordered the petit tender and my fiancé ordered the Alchemist's Creation. The latter changes seasonally--in our case it was a dashi broth with a variety of local mushrooms and vegetables. Both dishes were good, with my steak cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes amazingly creamy without tasting too buttery; the dashi broth was delicious as well. We also split the steak tartare, the house bread, and the chips & dip (seasonal special) as appetizers. With the exception of the chips & dip, the appetizers were good but nothing outstanding. The chips & dip, however, were REALLY GOOD! I did not know you could elevate potato chips like that, but their house-made chips are delicious and I would highly recommend trying them. Both my fiancé and I were not a huge fan of the sauce (just a little too creamy, it's really smooth though so if you like creamy sauces you'll probably enjoy it!), but just eating the plain chips was amazing. They even brought us a second serving of chips for free since we hadn't used all of the dip! We also ordered a pear tart for dessert which I would also recommend getting! Trivia: The nomadic Tatars (or Tartars) of this place are credit with the original steak tartare a meat they placed under their saddles to tenderize it and then eat it raw as they traveled. The star of the steak tartare was actually the bread. Most breads I have that look like this one are HARD and CRUNCHY and make a huge MESS. This one, while it looked the part, was soft and delightfully chewy. Perfect for the steak and the roasted garlic oil mix that accompanied the tartare. Service was okay. I felt like I was sort of an afterthought. One of the bartenders and other servers sort of took better care of me than my actual server. He did apologize when the second glass I ordered before my meal arrived as I was eating the last bites of my meal. The filet was a great cut and cooked perfectly. The au jus was barely needed, but good. The bar dining wasn't air conditioned and it was quite toasty. Not sure if the rest of the restaurant was air-conditioned. The patio was high level. read more

I've given some time and thought to writing this review. My parents took us to dinner here on our visit, claiming it would be a great 'Ashland' experience. Three of us ordered the 'petit tender' (after the waitress Claimed it was a 6 oz steak) and dad ordered off the appetizer menu: a rack of lamb and a Caesar salad. Imagine our surprise when the server placed a plate of obviously raw food with potato chips in front of my dad. He says, This isn't what I was expecting. I added, Is the Rack of Lamb raw? But the expeditor just continued to put plates on the table then scurried off. Now my dad's not one to raise a stink in the least so he just ate his STEAK TARTAR while we sawed our tough $56 tenderloins. I've never seen a filet cut in half, leaving two triangular pieces of meat? It couldn't be but maybe 4 ounces. I've also never had a filet that I could not chew and break down. Usually they're melt-in-your-mouth tender. Also. I've never seen a smaller amount of mushrooms served with said filet, like three skinny one inch long beech mushrooms. . Accompanying the 'tender' and mushrooms were whipped potatoes and a blackberry sauce. I found that if I dipped the steak in the potatoes AND the sauce, there was flavor. But I still could barely chew the meat up. Normally I would send it back but I knew it would embarrass my dad, who was over there eating that steak tartar while he ordered a lamb rack, so I just ate my food. Later the three of us $56 steak eaters discussed it and decided that COULD NOT have been a true tenderloin. It might've been a tritip....or... I don't know. My parents now say that's their last visit to the restaurant. I will add, the atmosphere is lovely and our waitress, Molly, was cheerful but never noticed the mess up (steak tartar vs lamb rack!?) . read more

My husband and I booked a table at Alchemy for dinner before we planned to go to a concert. The ambience was so lovely, and the food was so good, that we ended up skipping the concert so we could linger over dessert an a digestif. We had the sourdough and butter trio to start, and we could have just kept ordering more of that and been perfectly happy. The bone marrow butter was especially good. And the bread was pleasingly soft even when toasted and crunchy on the outside. I got the filet mignon and my husband had the duck confit for main. Both were incredibly. The chef's artistry made you want to slow down and consider each bite. And our waiter recommended the perfect bottle of local wine to set them off. Dessert was a pear frangipane tart and a chocolate hazelnut tart; both were very nice and made a lovely close to the meal. There is an extensive list of digestifs, and I got an incredible 1998 Sauternes that truly capped the night. We cannot wait to come back to Alchemy, and would recommend it to anyone looking for an incredible culinary experience. read more

If you're lucky, you will be served by "Hogan." Her skills are manifold: knowledge of the ingredients, patience with a highly picky eater at our table, awareness of our time requirements, and a great sense of humor. Tables are well separated; this encouraged conversation and gives you the feeling that a friend is having you over for dinner. Wine selection is vast and excellent. Cocktails are inventive and not too sweet. Menu items are creative but portions are a bit small. Cheese plate was thoughtful and the crackers appeared homemade. My $35 vegan dish was essentially half a zucchini and some tomato sauce, and served a bit cool. Blackberry salad was tasty and substantial. Duck confit was very well prepared. read more

This gave the impression they were something special, they were not. The butter was oily and flavorless, definitely not the good thick creaminess we were anticipating. The Caesar lacked flavor (when we asked for salt our server validated that it's a common complaint). The Filet and lamb were good, but nothing special. The restaurant is in an old Victorian. It's quaint, a little cramped and in need of some repair. Our server was nice enough. Our interactions with her felt very rushed and yet it took over 2 hours for us to have our meal... We visited Alchemy for a couple drinks and some snacks after work on a Thursday. The bar had a healthy amount of customers with still room for some more Drinks: the drinks were phenomenal. Very unique flavors, clearly not being stingy on the contents. Beautifully crafted and quick as well. Some of the cocktails were reasonably priced but some got a little higher than I believe a cocktail should be. (A few were $12, most were $16, and one was $18 if my memory serves but take that last one with a grain of salt) Food: the pomme frites were delicious with a ketchup that was clearly higher quality and a lemony dip for the second. These were $9 but they had truffles and garlic (?) in them and were very full of flavor so the price was worth it for a nice appetizer Located in a beautiful house like building, I look forward to trying dinner here read more

Can't believe I'm just reviewing alchemy. I've been here 4 times since being in Medford area. The happy hour is great (if you can get a seat). The main menu is also pretty good. Typical upscale place, small menu, dim lighting, great wine list, pricey. I had a ribeye when I went for regular dining and it was great, very juicy but overall typical. The carrot cake dessert was really delicious, ugh I just love carrot cake. I like the happy hour more at alchemy. It's only at the bar area which is small so you may not be able to get a seat but if you can it's great. Reasonable price and delicious steak tartar and pretty good French fries. The bartenders are super nice and friendly. And overall pretty quick as well. Somehow I never took a picture when I ate here but everything I've ate here has been delicious and I've always had great service. read more

Sad, but we need to find a new favorite restaurant when we visit Ashland in rhe future. Their new chef made a sumptuous tuna carpaccio, which was the highlight of our meal. And the foamed potato puree and kale ratatouille served as sides were both very nice. But, and it's a big BUT.....they were "out" of artisanal bread and butter, their signature cheeseplate and panzanella. Really!!?? The caesar salad was almost tasteless with rock hard croutons and the ribeye steak was too thin and tough at $56. A $17 raspberry tart was served with curdled whipped cream and, while it was good, it was not attractive it was not worth the price. Located just blocks from the Shakespeare theaters, the Winchester House and its restaurant fit right into the Ashland vibe. Seating in small spaces outside, in the bar, and in multiple rooms in the house give it an intimate feel. The staff is very friendly and helpful. And the food is excellent. Most of the entrees are relatively heavy (and spendy) but they had an Asian fusion, miso-marinated steak special that was outstanding (and cheaper) on a hot day. read more

My wife and I celebrated our Anniversary at Alchemy and we had an absolutely tremendous experience! The food is on point...the Caesar Salad is tremendous and the Filet Mignon is mouthwatering. Their crafted cocktails and wine menu compliment the food perfectly. The decor and ambiance is well thoughout giving the experience that added extra touch. The best part was our server, David. Restaurants nowadays can fall short when it comes to service. David really delivered, as he was knowledgeable about the food and wine. He was very attentive with a great demeanor and knew that fine balance of not being over attentive. The coursing of the food was perfect and he even fluffed our napkins when we got up to use the wash room. I was in the hospitality industry for over 30 years and have never received better service. I got the curried mussels good but the congee was super salty that I couldn't go in for another bite. My friend got the duck. It was a little tough and she thought the noddles were salty as well. 100% recommend the starters-- mushroom mushroom, the cauliflower-roasted poblano soup, scallops and ravioli was good. Located on the first floor of the historic hotel, the Winchester Inn.... The experience starts with historic charm. Reservations required, as word has gotten out about the magic. Sit outside at a bistro set surrounded by gardens, or inside next to windows that extend to the ceiling so you can still enjoy the beauty of the nature. The soft lighting sets the scene, the atmosphere is lively, and the service makes you feel like royalty. The steak tartare was the best I have ever had. Every bite demanded to be savored. We didn't want each mouth watering course to end, but we were genuinely excited for the next course. The food presentation was art, the flavors were thoughtfully put together, and just when we thought things couldn't get better - our server brought out the next dish. Well done. THis weekend we had a delicious Alchemy-worthy dinner, including thoughtful and tasty gluten-free substitutions for me. Our tablemates and friends went all in on the nonsense the Innkeepers bring to the table with themed individual gifts and hilarious Groucho-worthy puns. The strolling carolers were most impressive, including both sweet traditional songs that bring a tear to the eye and an intricate and funny remake of the 12 Days of Christmas. Two weekends left, Dec 11-13 and 18-20 and hopefully still has openings for you. The ambiance is very charming and warm, which sets you up to think it will be a good dining experience. The service took a long time. The food was lacking in flavor. I had the "mushroom mushroom" for an appetizer: little to no flavor. I had the Osso buco for an entree. It was on the drier side and also lacked in flavor. I am from Redding but was in Ashland for the evening for an audition, so I decided that I wanted to indulge and try a fancy restaurant while I was there. The outside garden was beautiful and a perfect setting to eat, because of Ashland's cooler evenings. The food was fantastic! I also chose this restaurant because I wanted to try some different foods. It was my first time trying duck and it was cooked perfectly. The duck with the cohesive, melt in your mouth croissant pot pie was a magical bite! The salad was also a great touch! The truffle pomme frites (french fries) were absolutely too die for. They were so crispy and quite honestly the best fries I've ever had! I ended my dinner with the chocolate fondant! Do not sleep on this dessert! Absolutely heavenly! The rich chocolate, couple with the caramel and passion fruit drizzle and honeycomb, make you sing with each bite! 10/10 dining experience. The service was also great! Shoutout to Alaine who took great care of me! I would say it did take quite awhile to for the main course to come out, but I am not sure if that is because there was an issue or if that was the normal cook time for the duck. However, other than that the service was impeccable! The best part for me though was that I left the restaurant and didn't feel heavy from the food, and was able to make the 2 hour drive back to Redding without feeling uncomfortable or tired from all the food I eat! IF you are a Foodie, this place is for YOU! Plan on ~2 hours from the time you are seated for a full dinner experience. The outdoor dining option worked out well for us on a warm summer night. Let's get down to the food: I cook A LOT! I pride myself of cooking a wide variety of dishes from all over the world and I like to use unique ingredients, proteins and spices not typically used in the average household. That being said, I don't mind paying a little more for such a unique dining experience done with high end ingredients and unmatched skill. 5 -stars for the FOOD, 4-stars because it's kinda pricey and not great for families or larger groups (in my opinion). A special treat for sure! Things that I could not easily replicate from home: From the charcuterie board: Every item was delicious, but the Chicken Liver & Foie Mousse topped with charred onion compote... Holy smokes! I used my finger to wipe the dish *Wow and YUM* The house-made marmalade also stood out as a table Favorite. Starter: If I had to pick just one thing, I would order the Foie Gras Thunderdome again. It was presented with a glass dome filled with smoke (instagram worthy). The Foie Gras was good (unique and hard to find), but I would say the pairing of the huckleberry sauce was what made this dish stand out for me. More huckleberry sauce please! :D Entrees: Crispy Duck Leg Confit served with oyster mushrooms was outstanding! The attention to detail and balance of flavors were perfect. Not sure what the sauce was, but if I had bread there would not have been so much as a smudge of sauce left on the plate. I'm a big fan of this dish and I would not change a thing. Dry Aged Ribeye Steak was freakin' delicious. I make a lot of ribeye steaks (my favorite cut of steak), but I can't recall any of my steaks having such a unique flavor profile and it was exceptionally tender (no knife needed); the Butcher Shop in Eagle Point comes kind of close, but you have to cook it yourself :P. The bone marrow butter was delicious and would be great as a side dish and served with warm bread. Dessert: After tasting a little of everything, I would re-order the Chocolate Fondant with passion-fruit sauce topped with bits of honeycomb. The description does NOT do this incredibly delectable dessert justice. Super rich, creamy and not overly sweet. I would most definitely pair this with their drip coffee (they use our local Rogue Valley roasting company). If you like chocolate, you will not want to share this dessert! In Summary: Outdoor garden at night is ideal of a warm summer night. Service by Amber was good, nice pace for a small group, might be too slow if you were going to OSF after. A little pricey for a regular night out, but most definitely where I would go for a special occasion, date night, to impress out of town guests OR to treat your foodie friends to a instagram worthy dining experience. *Special note the to pastry chef/artist: DAMN, you need to open your own shop! read more

OK, I have taken some time considering what to say about the last experience here. I have been to Alchemy three times in the last two years. The first was for an event that I planned for a party. On that occasion, everything was exquisite and perfect. The second time I went, it was just two of us for dinner. That was a miserable experience. The waiter clearly did not know what he was doing, made multiple mistakes, disappeared for a great periods of time, and when we got our "bill" it turned out to be his list of notes rather than our bill. The food that time was nothing special, the bill, of course, was quite large, and the whole experience was just laughable. OK, people make mistakes and some days are just not always great even in high-end restaurants, so we wrote it off. Our next experience was the Dickens dinner this Christmas season. I must say I was expecting something more, Dickinsonian, like lots of people all seated at long tables or something, but it was just the regular restaurant setting split between two rooms. Unfortunately for us, we were seated near the split between the two rooms, and there was a large company party in the other, right next to us. Everyone loves a good company party, so they were loud, pretty tipsy, and bordering on obnoxious. That probably would've been excusable, but the meal was absolutely terrible. I mean really! The appetizer was presented in a hard shell that was kind of an inedible, the salad, advertised as a warm winter salad, was simply a bunch of greens out of a bag with a citrus dressing on it. Nothing else was included on the plate, just the greens. And then the main dish arrived, which for us was prime rib. I kid you not, this was the most disgusting prime rib I have ever had in my life. There were a huge slabs of white fat on the plate, and the meat, although in my case, still nicely pink, was a such low quality that it was almost impossible to cut. This probably wasn't helped by the fact that the serrated knives that we were presented with were so dull that a butter knife probably would've been better, but even if you managed to cut off a piece, it was tough and tasteless. My partner literally tried to saw into his prime rib for over 10 minutes and finally gave up. He was never able to eat any of it. The dessert was fine, but certainly none of what we were served had anything to do with Dickens or the kind of food that would've been served at that time. We left terribly disappointed. There was nothing that was Dickinsonian about the evening other than the carolers. The Santa was brusque, sarcastic, and kind of rude, and the whole experience left us with a bad taste in our mouth.
