I'm stuck between 3 & 4 stars. The food was amazing, the service was great, but there are so many incredible restaurants in Ashland. That makes it hard to hand out 5 stars in comparison. Chateau Briand 36 should absolutely be on your list of places to visit while in town. But if I had one evening to spend in Ashland for dinner I would likely choose another restaurant. We were seated rather quickly, told that the restaurant was coming down from a very big dinner rush (when eating in Ashland please be mindful of show times and expect everyone else will be eating before heading to the theater as well). So, we arrived after a rush with a reservation at 7:30. We ordered their Cesar salad to start. 10/10. Simple, crisp, balanced... no notes Here's where things started to dwindle. The restaurant is romantic and intimate too a fault, its lights are dim, the jazz music is at a volume designed for sleepiness... and our main courses took over an hour to come out to us!! (We were so tired I almost asked for a pillow and a blanket... jokes aside...)Which came with no "hey sorry the kitchen is running behind" we actually watched a couple come in, sit down, eat, pay, and leave, all while we were waiting for our main course. All that being said, the food was great. We ordered their steak with a side of mushrooms, and chicken with brussel sprouts. Our server was kind, she even brought us out some cookies to finish our meal off with. This one was a split decision. Kudos to the menu design. Lots of intriguing options and to have it themed as a French steakhouse injected fresh flavors beyond the usual streak, greens, and potato fare of an American steakhouse. I ordered the beef cheeks. My initial thought as I went in was "these people know what they're doing." The meat was so tender and flavorful, and it melded seamlessly with the truffle sauce and cauliflower puree. The broccolini was charred beautifully with just enough crunch. We were off to a strong start! The hanger steak was a different story. A difficult cut of meat to get right. The center was a perfect medium, but the crust was over-charred and giving off bitter, ash-tray tasting vibes. A couple of the center cuts showed the potential of the dish, but as you approached the blackened ends, it wasn't appetizing. The drink list was exciting and I enjoyed the "Rum with a Vieux," a sort of rum-based take on an old fashioned. We got a Caesar salad to start, which was mostly made from the dense lettuce hearts and was again, overly bitter. This was an intriguing restaurant to visit. I won't be rushing back, but given the glimmers of technical mastery, I won't cross it off my list either. At a lower price-point, this place would have been a 4, but when paying premium you can't drop the ball on an entire dish. read more

Filet mignon perfectly seared and medium rare inside, exactly as ordered. I like that it's served sliced open so there's no mystery about it. It came with a few crispy roasted potatoes but we had ordered the pureed potatoes and the asparagus (sides sold separately). Cocktails strong and well-balanced. Only wish would be they put more red wine choices on the by-the-glass list. After tasting a sample of a not-very-tannic Cote de Bordeaux, I opted for the only Cabernet (local Rogue Valley) offered by the glass. How about adding some more full-bodied reds by the glass? My wife enjoyed her mushroom risotto (lots of cheese and butter probably!) and the artichoke heart appetizer was delicious and well-presented. read more

Everything here was absolutely phenomenal. The staff was friendly, all the food delicious, high quality cocktails and wine, what's not to love! And the grilled Cesar salad tastes like summer! First off, I had accidentally set my reservation for a Friday when I meant to do it on Saturday. On Friday they gave me a call 20 minutes after my reservation to see if I was still coming. Most places would not do that level of service. After the host helped me move my reservation, we came in the proper night and all of the staff was incredibly nice and smiles all around. Our waitress was on top of making sure we were aware of what dishes were out so we didn't get our hopes up. All of the dishes were incredible. The frites were crispy, the brined chicken and steaks were juicy; and the crème brûlée was melt in your mouth creamy. The cocktails were all very smooth and well made and the wines were delicious as well. My only "critique" is that it is fairly dim inside the restaurant, so if they would mess with your eyes: be warned. read more

I made a reservation here to celebrate my husbands birthday. It was Mid-week so there were only a few other customers in the entire restaurant. We waited by the front door waiting to be greeted and sat for more than an awkward amount of time. None of the staff knew the specials or the menu it seemed. They were out of the 2 of the things i was most interested in on the menu. The wine list was lovely. We had the filet mignon and mushroom gnocchi which was so good. Overall, the food was delicious but the staff made the experience awkward. I didn't feel like the attitude of the staff aligned with the class and sophistication of the restaurant. read more

Delightful wait-staff. Dining room is on the small side, but it is cozy. Steak tartare was served similar to a raw hamburger patty...very different style of serving than what I have had at other restaurants. Escargot is served in melted butter without the shell in a tray. The butter had more lemon flavor than garlic in my opinion. I have come here before and the escargot tasted way better than tonight's. The burger and fries here is REALLY good here!!! Food was incredible! The fillet mignon melted in your mouth, the pommes purée was impossibly creamy, somehow we found room for a delicious dessert before we rolled out! The host was very pleasant and welcoming. Our server, Bella, was also lovely. Her recommendations suited us well and she checked on us just enough. This is a pleasant room, with very pleasant staff. I had a grilled caesar, hangar steak, with some fingerling potatoes, and grilled broccolini. Flavors generally were pretty good and prices are quite reasonable. The steak was the requested medium rare. It was cut into chunks rather than slices, probably to make presentation a bit more interesting. Unfortunately service was terrible and the entree plate items were served room temp or cool. Nothing was warm, nevermind hot. The steak's garlic sauce was actually chilled. I was not told about specials, and only learned of them by overhearing a different server talking to another customer. After I finished the salad, there was a very long wait before the entree was served, The irony about the server is that they were being shadowed by a trainee. read more

The name of the restaurant sets the expectation - French and Beef Filet! I really want to give a 4th star but there were just too many subtle missteps. My wife and I dined here before catching Twelfth Night at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. As their website suggests, leave urself a good 2hr window to dine. The host (who appeared to also be the owner) was welcoming and able to seat us indoors as my patio reservation would have been painful (it was 100degrees in Ashland that weekend!). Anyways, indoor ambiance was very steakhouse-esq...nothing mind blowing but nothing to complain about. Kudos on the restroom, very clean! The menu was filled with yummy French inspired steakhouse items.... On this night we kept it super simple with the bread basket for two, which was accompanied by a trio of butter spreads - whipped salted butter, schmaltz (my favorite), and tallow (2nd fav). The spreads were a nice touch and the bread warm and grilled but the char was almost too far. Nevertheless, I personally likey bread on the crispy side so this was fine. We started with some craft cocktails which were really tasty and pleasantly unusual. I had the Apple A Day - not overly apple-E which was a good thing. I'll take a moment to acknowledge that there were a variety of attractive starters on the menu - beef tartar, escargot, salads, duck wings, French onion soup, etc. but we were keen on saving our appetite for the Steak. Let's talk service for a moment - staff were all friendly and appeared to be working their butts off. That said, the service could have been better - water glasses were filled way too late (and only refilled at dessert), offer for 2nd round if drinks was delayed, owner kept popping up to help which was cool but felt like could be ruffling the wait staff (think restaurant rescue). Again, everyone was clearly working hard and sounded like some folks were new and I'm sure post-pandemic it's just hard to get all the shifts filled. So I'm not mad at it but just justifying my rating. Wife ordered the filet mignon and I ordered the wagyu NY strip loin ($50) both with the truffled red wine jus. The cook on the steaks were a beautiful medium-rare and truffled jus added an extra umptuousness. As is typical with most steakhouses, the sides are a la carte, though there were a handful of potatoes (they were supposed to be roasted but tasted boiled with no browning) plated with the steaks. We opted for the mushrooms - which were loaded with garlic (not a bad thing but, lots of garlic even for a garlic fan). Switched to some red wine with dinner, a must! For dessert we indulged in the vanilla lavender creme brulee. Almost a tad much on the lavender but keep reading and you'll see where the real mistep was with dessert. I tacked on a glass of port to round out the meal and keep my buzz for the theater. All in all, we had a nice meal and I felt the quality of the food and overall menu (including pricing) were solid. In terms of execution, there's room for improvement - best example is my wife excitedly smashing her spoon into the creme brulee for the signature sugar crack only to be disappointed by a bowl of creme, lol. It was so obviously disappointing we just laughed it off and finished out the meal. I feel like Chateaubriand36 has a solid foundation but needs to refine/mature a bit more. Their just don't se. One star, not for the food, as we did not dine. One star as we had a reservation for two weeks and when my wife went to check in while I parked the car, the kid behind the podium turned to the hostess and said "oh, they get the special table." The "special table" was right next to an open waitress station and the swinging double doors to the kitchen. This was at 5:15 and there were many other tables available. Don't forget we had had a reservation for two weeks. The waitress went back to try and seat us at another table but the smug little twit behind the podium would not let her reseat us. We left! As a side note, you cannot order Chateaubriand unless you are a party of four or more. This is not why we left, however. read more

This is a lovely downtown Ashland restaurant with linen tablecloths and a lot of charm. They aim for the heights, which is wonderful, but need to master consistency -- a key element of a great restaurant. If you hit a good night, your experience will be sublime. If you hit an off night, your experience likely will not be sublime -- but the bill that you pay WILL be consistent. I recommend that when you are placing your order with your server that you are very, very clear about what you want. This will help the kitchen deliver the best results to you that they are capable of delivering. All in all, this is a lovely restaurant with some delightful classic options on the menu. Nice atmosphere and pleasant service but the food was not consistently hitting the mark tonight. Filet mignon was delicious but the onion soup offered minimal cheese and tasted off (burned chemical taste?). Cesar salad was charred (hence, infused with a BBQ smoke-esque taste that strongly split our party's opinions between love/hate). Few dessert options but the silk chocolate cake we had was nice enough. However, the rum-based cocktail was probably the highlight of our meal. Met some friends here for dinner the other night and we were quite happy with the choice. The food was excellent; I had the duck l'orange (sp?) and my wife had the hangar steak. After a long trip in from San Diego this gem was a fantastic welcome into Ashland. It was a quiet night and a bit later so I had the restaurant to myself but this didn't impact the food or service in the negative. My server was attentive but not overbearing and my meal of the Bibb lettuce salad and 8 oz filet was perfectly prepared. The French music was a nice touch and I left full and happy. My husband and I are visiting Ashland for the weekend and after much research settled on Chateaubriand 36 for one of our two nights here. We first ordered drinks. I had a gin cocktail (can't remember the name) my husband had a whiskey sour. Both really good. Next we ordered the bread with three spreads, beef tallow, chicken schmaltz and whipped butter with maldon salt. The spreads were delicious! Could have eaten them with a spoon especially the beef tallow. Next we had the beef tartar. Also really amazing. For our entree's my husband had the fillet with sauteed mushrooms for a side dish. I had the risotto with duck confit. His fillet was perfectly cooked. The potatoes that came with it were tasty. The mushrooms were also good but for some reason arrived a good 5 minutes or more after the steak. My risotto was undercooked. The duck was hard to find. It was a little disappointing. Overall a good experience. Our waitress was knowledgeable and friendly and did a great job. Bar service good, wait staff great, kitchen fell a little flat with the risotto. read more

Y'all. Dang. My husband and I had dinner at Chateaubriand 36 on June 14, and it was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. We were greeted and seated promptly and our server, Pursah, came and introduced herself promptly as well. Pursah is an amazing server -- she is friendly, competent, efficient, and witty. Both of us wished we could have her with us at every restaurant we visit! The food was extraordinary, and Pursah did an excellent job explaining our menu options. She learned what we like and made recommendations that were spot-on. My husband had the filet mignon. He took his first bite and actually shut his eyes in bliss. I had scallops on a bed of vegetables and whoa damn the whole plate was a party. Dessert was a selection of utter pastry artistry and a glass of Sauternes. I've already left a review on Google but figured credit is due where credit is owed. Like my prior review on Google, the experience at Chateaubriand 36 was once again an amazing culinary adventure. After my wife and I's first experience here, it easily became my favorite restaurant I've had the privilege of dining at. I'm sure others have been to a place where the first experience is amazing and then the follow up visits don't meet that initial level; Chateaubriand 36 on the contrary delivered food and service that was of the same magnificent magnitude as it was during our first meal here. My wife and I were celebrating my birthday and the day was off to a rocky start with the loss of an amazing friend. Chef Michael and the staff At Chateaubriand 36 provided such a tantalizing and hope filled dining experience that it helped me to focus on the good that was occurring in front of me. Chef Michael was also kind enough to cover our desert, which if you haven't had the crème brûlée, you're seriously missing out on life!! This amazing gesture wasn't expected and came as an amazing surprise. The dining experience is top notch, the service is beyond magnificent with the waiting staff and manager all being very genuine and humble people. My wife and I look forward to our many meals to come at Chateaubriand 36, and if you took the time to read this whole thing, I hope this has convinced you to go to Chateaubriand 36 and have your life changed for the better! Very disappointed with our experience here. The service was overall very unwelcoming and standoffish. They were very unwilling to do simple requests like substitute fingerling potatoes for fries. Or add a side of bread. They asked if it was a special occasion on the reservation but made zero mention of it in person. The food was good but the attitude for the quality in comparison to other restaurants was uncalled for. Not the best food in town not by a loooong shot. Went to alchemy for desert and digestif and the bar tender lit up the place. Never go to chateaubriand when Alchemy is across the street. read more

We ventured back over here after a very bad experience. But this time we stuck to what we know they do well and only had main courses of steaks. However, this time the sides were beautifully seasoned and the short ribs were nothing short of delicious! However, the restaurant was almost empty, which for a first service on a Saturday night was a little disconcerting. There was no Maitre d' to greet us and when we left no one was around to say thanks and goodbye. What this restaurant lacks is atmosphere and buzz and although we probably would not try other things on the menu from past experience, it desperately needs some lighter summer options on the menu as well as a vegetarian option, even the mushroom side my wife had, although very tasty, is autumnal not summer fare. If I were to give the owner any advice, it would be this: inject some capital, redecorate and do a well-planned relaunch and relaunch party with some effective PR, but that is going to take some sitting down and first working out what the restaurant's identity is and how that is reflected back into the decor, the menu and the staff. And you cannot afford not to have a professional Maitre D'. Other than the decor this is the first impression a customer has of your establishment. Dining out is a whole experience not just a plate of food. $144.00+ for bread, 2 mains and one glass of wine without a tip is a lot of money for a regional restaurant when the entire restaurant experience is lacking. read more

Portions are not huge at this restaurant, so I would recommend adding sides or appetizers to your meal if you're very hungry. Both my wife and I had the 9 oz. hangar steak, which was very flavorful and cooked to perfection. She had the French Onion soup, which had a very strong and satisfying beef flavor and I had the wedge salad (again, not the biggest I've had, but very tasty). Upon arriving, we found that the host mistakenly gave our reservation to another and we had to wait to be seated. We then proceeded to wait for a long enough wait that people who were seated after us received service before we did. We finally were waited on only to then have our order incomplete and an item we had ordered was not put in in time and then was told that is was sold out. At this point, we just drowned ourself in the bottle we had ordered. An apology was gjven but for all the inconveniences, a comp of some sort should have been an obvious gesture. The food we did finally receive was delicious. Front of house could use training and better decorum when mistakes are made. Sadly, the two times I have been in and experienced terrible service. Made a reservation got in very easily on a Thursday night at 6 o'clock ambience was very delightful host very friendly and inviting. Order drinks and an appetizer, appetizer we ordered was the cheeseboard and came out subpar. For 20$ we got a 10$ plate. Our server Sophia was amazing and did a great job at suggesting items and up selling. However we ended up waiting a obnoxious amount of time to get our entrées, The wait time wasn't the problem necessarily, it would've just been nice (especially since it was slow) to be notified why it was taking so long. This restaurant had some good points, but many more negative ones. On the plus side, it is cozy. It is in the middle of town with parking available. It is clean. Staff (waiter) was lovely and attentive. On the negative side, - it is VERY EXPENSIVE. I mean well over what is expected in Ashland, which is known for pricey food. This, however, would have been tolerated if the food was WORTH it. My daughter's plates were the duck a l'orange. It was a tiny amount of food and the price $38.00. The appetizers (a bread basket with various spreads and a cheese plate ) was actually good and priced right. And thank goodness we HAD that because the tiny portions on the actual plate would have left even a light eater hungry. I had the the special. It was ENTIRELY fat - not even a mouthful of actual beef. Inedible if not nauseating. The be FAIR , the waiter took the cost of my meal off of the bill. THE WAITER WAS VERY GOOD AT HIS JOB. Dessert was lovely. And thank goodness we ordered it because we would have left the restaurant hungry without that and the appetizers. Total cost for 4 of us $175.00 before tip. One of the best meals I've had in Ashland in a long time. Started with a French onion soup which was AMAZING, thick with onions and a strong, hearty bone broth flavor. Our party of 4 shared a couple of salads and the chateaubriand, which was obviously the star of the show: a beautiful cut of meat, cooked to moist perfection with a crispy exterior, surrounded by wild mushrooms. The flavors of every mushroom variety stood out and complimented the savory au jus. Special shout out to our waiter, Erin, who recommended the perfect French wine to go with our meal. Last night, my extended family of 7 had a dinner at Chateaubriand. It often happens that, as a vegan, I will be along at restaurants who do not scenically cater vegans. I am not a militant vegan, and know how to navigate challenging restaurant menus. Last night, however, was bad. The restaurant and waiter seemed as if I was the first vegan to enter their doors, and I could not have felt more unwelcome. The waiter was inexperienced, and the kitchen seemed unwilling to do much. I often ask, as I did last night, that the kitchen just prepare an entree plate of ANYTHING they could do. It's not a big ask, especially when our table spent a TON. Most quality restaurants have a Goto entree modification. But here, I just gave up and had a plate of arugula with lemon, and a carrot side dish. Wholly unsatisfactory. Yes, I may have been able to negotiate a better solution. But beaming the "problem" each night at restaurants is tiresome. It's not a big ask for a restaurant to have simple solutions. And my bet, they read this and really don't care. Choose a different place. From my vantage point, the rest of our table was underwhelmed as well with their meals. read more

We went in with high hopes for this place and the food did not meet expectations. On a positive note: the service was great, the cocktails were good, and the soup and salad were delicious. However, the burger that was ordered at medium rare was served beyond well done, and the salmon entree was also extremely overcooked. Additionally, the menu online did not match the menu in person, so many of the dishes were not available to be ordered. Overall, this place has potential but definitely needs a good fine tuning before we would be willing to go back. read more
