I'm really glad I listened to all the good reviews here on Yelp. Cocorico is a great restaurant. I was able to score a reservation for dinner about a week before we traveled to Ashland. Our table was in their patio space, which I actually like better than the indoor part of the restaurant. The patio space feels very open and has a lot of live plants in the planters that make space between tables. It was a little warm on the patio since it was 98 degrees outside, but they keep it relatively cool on this mostly enclosed patio. Our server was great. She was so friendly and fun to talk to. She helped us figure out what we wanted to order and checked in on us just the right amount. You can tell the food here is very fresh and homemade. We started with the Deviled Eggs, which are really special. I love how they serve them over a bed of crushed up potato chips as they give this dish some salty crunch. Next we had the Beet salad, which is marinated beets over a whipped cheese. The beets do have a strong vinegar flavor, but it's balanced out beautifully by the cheese. My wife ordered the Mushroom Bolognese, which was probably the best dish of the evening. This is an incredible, vegetarian dish that is so meaty without any meat. The finely diced mushroom sauce is so good along with the handmade noodles. Also, adding burrata to it gives it a perfect creaminess. I ordered the pork chop, which was also excellent and enormous. It did take me a lot longer to eat since it was a little hard to cut, the compote on top added a great sweetness, but I feel like it could've used more. Also, the polenta and grilled asparagus was awesome. Lastly, we got the Rice Pudding for dessert. It comes with a hazelnut crumble and a dolce de leche sauce. Normally, I feel like rice pudding has a kind of thin, milky consistency, but not this. It is think and has a wonderful texture. It is probably the best rice pudding I've ever had. This place will not disappoint. The food is amazing!!!! The vibe is old person hangout. Like there seemed to be mostly 60+ people eating here but that did not take away from anything just an observation. The decor is bright and funky. The devil eggs as others have stated has broken up chips at the bottom of the dish to add a crunch. At first I did find it off putting because it feels like your eating egg shells but found if I dip the devil eggs in the chips my mind registers that there is a crunch and then it taste amazing! No wonder they keep doing it. Had the special halibut of the day and my husband had a pasta dish but I forget the name and picture. We also had a berry moscow mule and beet salad that was so fresh and paired perfectly with the purée it rested upon. All the food was great but the halibut was so good I had a hard time not scarfing it down. Wow. Best dish. Very bright to look at and taste. It made me feel warm and cozy. We experienced a wonderful dinner service with friends at Cocorico in Ashland the other evening. Of all the dishes we tried, their fresh deviled eggs and a pork chop "special" reigned supreme. The eggs were creamy, seasoned well and had a delicate mouth feel that wasn't rubbery. They were also plated with care and beautifully served as pictured at our table. Caveat: The eggs came over some crushed potato chips for texture. Not a great move IMHO. One of our friends thought she was eating egg shells as she missed hearing the server say what was in the bowl (dining room is noisy at times and dimly lit). They weren't necessary and became a distraction. The thick-cut pork chop (bone-in) was cooked to perfection by a slow & low "sous vide" process, perfect for keeping the meat moist and tender. Reversed seared/grilled to finish, with an herbed crust before plating over a sweet potato mash, au jus and steamed spring asparagus spears. The environment inside was intimate, warm and jovial with many happy diners enjoying their meals as well. It would be a perfect place for "date night". Another excellent visit and a new menu! Randy chose to try the Summer Campanelle (I'll attach a pic of the menus so you can see what's in it) as well as the burrata again for his appetizer. I chose the mushroom bolognese and the asparagus appetizer. The food was excellent although Randy and I switched meals because he didn't enjoy the puree on his dish as much as I did so I ate his summer campanelle and he ate my bolognese and we were both very happy customers. The burrata was very good and I loved (LOVED) my asparagus. Everything was flavorful and fresh - and who doesn't love homemade pasta. For dessert we got the strawberries and cream and the chocolate mousse. We shared both because who doesn't love strawberries with their chocolate mousse! We didn't get a pic of it but Randy got a drink similar to the one he got on our last visit but this one was grapefruit and very refreshing and delish. We sat on the patio again. It was warm when we first got there (5 pm) but definitely cooled down as time went on. Kyle was our server tonight. Man, we had the best dinner yet at Cocorico, closest to a 5 star review they have come. The staff were amazing and on arrival you could feel the passion they had for their restaurant. The owner should give the lady seating guests a raise because she greeted us like we were her best friends and she had held onto the best table in the house for us! We were instantly stoked. The wait staff were also highly attentive and made us feel served in every sense. Tonight the stars of the show were the cocktails and starters. Amazing drinks came out with depth of flavor. I had my usual oaxaca old fashioned, and let my non-existent hair down with another Royale Aviation cocktail. Amazing construction, colors, and flavors that felt like a journey. The grilled octopus starter was a slam dunk. The mildly charred octopus was up-showed by the amazing bed of pinto beans that added a deep savory flavor with a delicious acidic tang at the end of each bite. The burrata also played games using texture with your palate, juxtaposing the rich soft cheese with the crunch of spiced apple bits and candied pecans. What a course! For my main I had the sole market fish, which was a marvelous braid-work of various flavors and textures. A delicate filet with a delicious crust, draped over creamy kohlrabi puree, yellow rice, crunchy parsnip, and even a tangy pickled fennel. Now the only weak spot of the meal was the chickpea tagine. You could tell the chef's aim was to contrast the intense salty halloumi patty with a more modestly seasoned bed of chickpea and rice. However, the chickpea and rice felt like a total void and ratio of halloumi cheese to the rest of these flavorless items was totally off. If you scroll down to one of my prior reviews, you will see this same dish bathing in a rich red sauce, which was sorely missed. The disappointment was real, because this was the entree my wife was craving that inspired our reservation. Overall, a great meal. Really strong construction of flavors in almost every dish, and definitely in the cocktails. This is a spot to try and try again. Gayle and I enjoyed a fabulous meal last Thursday evening at Cocorico. This space housed the former Amuse restaurant for years, before Cocorico took over a few years ago. Cocorico describes itself as festive European-style eatery serving modern Neo-Rustic Mediterranean cuisine by Chef Nat Borsi. Gayle and I had a great time for what we both remember as a perfect cozy date night. Everything in our experience ran on all cylinders starting with a friendly greeting and ushering us to our table. Our deeply experienced wait guy was friendly, engaging, and insightful. Our table was comfortable and at a window. We also appreciated the thank you as we left for the evening. Gayle ordered Trout as her main, while I opted for the Carbonara. For the appetizer table, we ordered Garlic Bread, Asparagus, and Mussels. All choices were rich, delicious, well presented, served promptly, and a good value for the money. The adult beverages for the evening were a Bombay Sapphire Martini (up) and Chardonnay for Gayle and Sparking Water and a nice Oregon Rose for me. We continued on by sharing a really tasty chocolate-heavy dessert and a pot of Noble coffee. With respect to the former New Sammy's Cowboy Bistro, this might be one of the best meals that Gayle and I have enjoyed in the Ashland area over the years. We haven't tried MÄS yet, but that more expensive opportunity can wait until after we visit Cocorico again (and hopefully soon). read more

TL;DR: the service and menu are inconsistent. Some nights really good, some nights not. Mistakes were made by multiple aspects of the restaurant and a member of our party who communicated very clearly that she has Celiac was served a dish with bread. I truly want to like this restaurant, but I have had some really mixed experiences. The ambiance is very nice - it can get a little loud in the dining room, but the tables are comfortable, the lighting is appropriate, and the decor is interesting. The wine list is phenomenal and the reason I brought friends on my most recent visit. The menu is really hit and miss. There are some dishes that are excellent (some things even sell out before the evening is over), but unfortunately, not all. The hostess is absolutely wonderful - she is charming and funny and really has a talent for making you feel welcome and appreciated for dining with them. Unfortunately, the service is really hit and miss. On my last visit, the waitress really didn't seem like she had time for us. She didn't take the time to explain in much detail about menu items or the wine list. She didn't participate in any banter with us or really make us feel welcome. She seemed rushed, which has not been my experience with service here in the past. My biggest concern, though, is about the efforts of the staff and kitchen to keep items allergen-free. The restaurant advertises itself as a place that is Celiac knowledgeable and friendly. We made it clear in our reservation and to the waitress when we sat down at the table that one member of our party had Celiac and needed to be strictly gluten free. All seemed well and we ordered two appetizers marked as gluten free on the menu. One of those appetizers was served with bread. After the food had been delivered, the waitress must have noticed the issue and offered to have the kitchen remake the dish. We agreed (she left the original plate on the table and in the end we were only charged for one, so all good). The re-made dish was brought out, with bread on the side. There should not have been bread at all, it was very confusing. All in all I would return one more time and hope to have a different experience, but if that experience was the same as my recent one, I likely would not return. read more

We arrived at Cocorico Neo Rustic Kitchen in Ashland around 6:45 with a party of four, no reservation, fully prepared for a wait. Instead, we were welcomed with warm smiles and immediate accommodations. That level of hospitality alone puts Cocorico in a different league. From the moment we sat down, everything was executed with intention. Our server gave a thoughtful, knowledgeable breakdown of the wine list, and the cocktails were phenomenal especially the Mexican Jungle Bird, which was perfectly balanced and one of the best cocktails I've had in a long time. As a bar consultant for some of the top brands in the industry, it's rare that a drink stops me in my tracks, but this one did. We started with the deviled eggs and the parmesan garlic bread, both absolute standouts. Then came the entrées: a fall-apart tender lamb shank, a beautifully prepared chicken dish, and a homemade carbonara that tasted like it came straight out of Rome. Every plate was its own moment; comforting, elevated, and crafted with real intention. And then... the dessert menu. This is where Cocorico separates itself from nearly every restaurant in Oregon. During a recent trip to Ashland, I decided to check out Cocorico before an evening show at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. It's walking distance from the theaters, and I was happy I could get a table without a reservation during a popular weekday evening. The service was friendly though there was a delay in getting my entree. However, my cocktail arrived relatively quickly and I thought their version of the Last Word was expertly made. I can't say enough about the warm and welcoming environment from checking in at the front door to our last bite of pistachio tiramisu. If you are lucky enough to have Meg as your server, just follow ALL of her recommendations. The back patio is my favorite space and it is now fully enclosed and has a riot of plants between the tables. You have to order a specialty cocktail and the Monte Cassino didn't disappoint. My husband and I were on our way to the Puget Sound and stayed a night in Ashland. I didn't see on the Yelp review that reservations were recommended for Cocorico, so we blithely went and hoped for a table after seeing all of the great feedback. We were greeted by Grace, the host, who kindly wiggled us into a spot contingent upon our agreeing to wait half an hour or so. We were seated on the enclosed outdoor patio, right next to an attractive and warm propane tower heat source. Our server was Salicia (sp?), who greeted us promptly, suggested NA beverages, and brought my husband the most delicious root beer (locally made) we'd ever tasted. The burrata appetizer special with roasted veggies, pine nuts, and arugula pesto was fantastic with their fluffy and buttery Parmesan garlic bread. We split the green apple and arugula salad with pistachios, lightly dressed and lemony, very good. For entree we split the fish special of halibut, which was served over kohlrabi mash with other roasted root veggies (maybe squash?) and rice. The fish was cooked perfectly, however, I found the base of the dish to be unremarkable. We finished with an exquisite rice pudding dessert special, and blackberry pie with vanilla ice cream. Both well worth saving room for! Salicia was just the right amount of attentive and friendly, with an apparent sixth sense of knowing when to come check on us. Her support staff were quick, efficient and nice. The service and atmosphere were a 5-star experience, if I could I'd give the food 4 1/2 stars. We had a great experience! When my classmates wanted to meet up for our graduation dinner, I suggest here without hesitation! I had the most amazing meal last year and I knew this would be the special place to go to!
