PROS: This place was very clean and obviously had good prices. The staff was very nice and it seemed like they were taking care of the store by restocking things when I was there. Parking was plentiful as well CONS: The prices on some stuff did raise and there was nobody at the cash registers which created a long line. They also aren't as plentiful as other supermarkets since there's no bakery department, pharmacy, fresh meat section, or customer service booth. I don't know how this place "used to be" but as of "Right Now" they don't impress me in the least bit. In fact most of the stuff in here is inexpensive no name brand garbage from parts unknown. Check out the meats that are of questionable origin from far away lands where standards definitely don't apply. The produce that I bought here turned to shit as soon as 1 day later. Totally unacceptable even for a place like this. Listen I like a bargain for sure but how cheap do you want your frozen meatballs to be anyway?? Plus they had the scare with the Horse meat. Horses are majestic beautiful animals and are Not for Human consumption. This Aldi location is the only one in the area. I really love Aldi for their low prices and knock-off brands. I feel like they have pretty good quality vegetables, fruits, meats, etc. There were a few times I saw moldy berries or cucumbers before buying them but that happens at Shoprite too. Workers just need to be more vigilant and shoppers just need to check before buying. Since their remodel, the store is more spacious and things are easier to find. Great deals that I usually go for are their chicken breasts family packs ($1.89/lb), pork chops and beef, aloe drinks for ($0.89/bottle), frozen seafood (love their frozen salmon and shrimp), and bottled water. They usually have good fruits and vegetables but some are prepackaged and you have to buy the whole thing which is usually too much for my fiance and I (garlic, potatoes, apples, oranges, etc). read more

I've shopped at various Aldi stores for more than a decade. This store is clean and well managed. The staff have been there for a while which is always a good sign. They are friendly and professional. As for Aldi in general, go with a quarter and an open mind. Most of the items are Aldi brand; don't expect the same selection as you'd find at a bigger store. Try the Aldi brands. I've liked almost everything I've had. If you don't like it there is a money back guarantee. You literally have nothing to lose. There is a decent selection of organic and gluten free foods, even keto foods. The baked goods are packaged but delicious. There isn't a deli or butcher but the packed meats are good. I buy grass fed beef there. Like others I wish there was loose produce to choose but that's a small issue. Once you're in the right mindset you'll find it refreshing to get everything you need from a store with only a few aisles. You also have to accept that the hours are limited. Don't expect to run in at 10 pm to pick up milk. The only complaint I hear when I'm there is that there is typically only 1 cashier. There are 6 self checks so this shouldn't be a problem unless you truly object to scanning your own items. Things like returning your cart, shorter hours and scanning your groceries keep Aldi prices low. I estimate that I save $25 or more a week shopping here. Try it :) read more

I shopped at Aldi occasionally when I lived in Germany (it's a European chain). Even over there it's lower quality. The Clifton location is disgusting but this store is very clean, bright and welcoming. I just wouldn't buy meat, etc from ANY aldi but for pantry items and spices and hodge podgey type items the deals are unbeatable. For example, the same onion soup mix at shoprite is 1.99 compared to aldis 55 cents. Tips: bring your own bags or you have to purchase bags in the store (European custom) and bring a quarter for a cart. read more

The last few times I stopped by, they were out of ALL of the "produce picks" (produce that is on sale that week). Apparently those deals are only available to shoppers who do not have 9-5 jobs and are able to go grocery shopping in the mornings on weekdays. The manager of this store needs to make sure that the shelves are being restocked throughout the day. I have no issues with the cashiers throwing the stuff in my bag because I place the items on the belt in order I want them be packaged. Last time I went, however, the cashier had a cart next to her (I did not get one for my small shopping trip). I placed my giant reusable bag wide open inside of the cart but the cashier proceeded to throw my items in the "seat" section of the cart. She then told me that the cart "has to stay" and I have to pack my items there, and she began throwing the next customer's items in the same cart. I only had a few things, so I quickly got them into the bag and was out of there. However, this to me was completely improper. read more

I almost don't want to give a good review because I know that will bring crowded aisles and longer lines. I feel confident that I am providing the best foods to my family and saving almost 60% from what I had been spending at other supermarkets. I get fresh produce, meats, organic meals, diapers and dog food for a fraction of the price. When I need help the customer service is great. I'm there every few days for milk/ diapers and I have no issues driving out of the way for these savings and seeing what's in "the middle aisle" for random goodies. After reading previous reviews I see that ALOT of improvements have been made! They accept credit card payments: Bring a quarter for the grocery cart, bring reusable bags or you will be charged, or use the boxes on the shelves :) read more

They just remodeled the entire store and it looks great. A lot more fresh produce, meat and dairy than before. The prices blow shop rite out if the water. Eggs were less than a dollar per dozen, yogurt is 39 cents. Loaf of bread less than a dollar, can of tuna is 69 cents. You get the drift. The quality is the same if not better than shop rites store brands. Mostly everything is private brand so very little brand names. You get in and out pretty quick. They now accept credit cards. They don't provide bags so bring your own. read more

A lot of people assume and decide not to go to Aldi's because they think its an inferior quality store. They are wrong I was pleasantly surprised to find that almost everything they have is of very good quality and the prices are much less expensive than Shop Rite, Foodtown, A@P, Wegmans and all other major stores I go to. Much of the fruit is sold in bags of larger quantities and those fruits I can't buy because we are two people and wont use them fast enough. All their fruit and vegetables that I have bought is top quality and fresh but like any other store you look at it and pick the best. Their cheese is of very good quality as well as some spreads and dips ready made that are great and their frozen fish is very good (most fish sold in most stores is frozen). They always carrry everything you might want to buy so I go to a couple of stores to get the best prices and find all I need or just like. Ready made Italian food at Uncle Gesepies, Aldies for anything they have that I use (I go there first) Trader Joe's for good quality convenience foods at decent prices, (Chopped frozen peppers, some ready made food etc. Flexible and open minded are qualities you need now a days to afford food prices and still indulge. read more

Yay! Aldi is my go-to for cheap unrecognizable brands of chips and sodas which are perfect for big parties on a budget. It's like Germany's version of Trader Joe's. I've never needed a shopping cart until the one time that my dad sent me to buy a stone fire pit (yes, they also sell random odds and ends) which was way too heavy for me to carry through the store. When I went to grab a cart, I discovered that it wants you to put in a quarter in order to borrow the cart. I'm not sure how great this quarter system is at making people return the carts considering you can't even phone someone on a payphone for that much anymore. But in this economy, I guess every penny counts and I'm sure most people want that quarter back. Another quirk is that they don't provide free shopping bags so remember to bring your own or be prepared to pay for them. The grocery stores in DC do this and I actually appreciate that because I'd like to think of myself as somewhat green. I bring my own tote bags when I shop regardless. My biggest complaint, and the reason this review won't get more than 3 stars, is that this particular location always seems to be understaffed and there's never anyone on the floor to help and usually just one cashier tending to a line of customers. When I was there to buy that fire pit, I had to lift this 100 lb package on my own - actually I'm exaggerating, it was probably 60 lbs at the most but it was awkward for me to lift because of my stature. They were laid out on the floor so I had to get it from the floor to my cart which was quite a workout. OH! And don't forget to bring cash or be prepared to use your debit card (make sure your accounts have enough money in them) because they do not accept credit cards here. read more

On my first (and last) visit to the store I was surprised that I could t figure out how to get cart. It's impossible to understand that you need 25 cents to unlock cart and you will get them back when you return it. Fine, but what if you don't have quarter on you, did they even came up with that idea? Then they have four or five rows. Prod its look like products from major brands, but only brand is different. Prices are lower. Now, final thing, checkout. They will sell you a bag for 10 cents. Why nobody told me when I was entering store, that I will need my own bags? Oh, and rude checkout person who was very angry when I asked her to bag products for me. Did I say I wouldn't visit this store ever again? Yes, I won't be. And you shouldn't too. read more

I go to this supermarket to buy strawberries that are on Sale (featured in their weekly circular) When I went to pay, the manager told me there's a limit of two boxes per customer. He then took away the strawberries from my cart. I went in today to get more strawberries Again it was on sale featured on their circular Again they limited customers to two boxes and took them away. I told the cashier this is the second time this has happened and I didn't see a sign He said there is a small sign I told him if there was one it isn't noticeable I think this is false advertising Get the customers in to buy other stuff and then tell them the ones on sale has a limit. ALDI is a cost-efficient alternative to most grocery stores. It is low-frills and budget oriented. This store in Rockaway is one of the cleanest and newest ALDI stores that I have seen to date. ALDI carries mostly its own branded items with very funny names that you would expect from a non-native English speaking German company that sells goods in an American market. Italian Items: Priano, Grandessa German Foods: Deutsche Kueche (I buy all of this) Dairy Items: Happy Valley Farms Healthy Items: Fit & Active (TM) Chocolate Items: Choceur (check the flag for country of origin) Asian Items: Furia Breads: L'oven/Bake House Mexican Items: Benita, Casa Mamita Frozen Items: Bremer Selects Seafood: Sea Queen (I always think of Queen Ursula!) Cosmetics: Lacura Like Trader Joe's, the food is sourced from vendors who produce, package and ship the products. It is unknown if the suppliers overlap, both companies do not make their supplier lists public. The food is generally cheaper than the "branded" names in the supermarkets due to (1) lower overhead and (2) less marketing. ALDI is owned by the German ALDI Sud (South) Group and Trader Joe's is owned by the ALDI Nord (North) group. Many Aldi practices are common in German supermarkets but unique to Aldi in the US market. ALDI makes the shopper deposit a quarter in the shopping cart slot to dislodge the (two seater) shopping cart and ensure its return. ALDI also makes you either buy a shopping bag or utilize an existing bag that you bring with you. ALDI only accepts cash or debit cards. Items are displayed in boxes on top of boxes. Sometimes I regard ALDI items with a bit of skepticism since they are sold/marketed as the "absolute lowest price for the absolute lowest budget." It is a good idea to check the ingredients listed for amounts of artificial coloring, flavoring, preservatives, etc. The imported products usually have less GMO than the domestic. Obviously, GMO amounts are not stated anywhere. ALDI has little to no organic products although I did find a fine organic tomato sauce once. Many bargains are to be had, however. In the past three months I picked up fantastic chocolates (produced in Austria, Germany and Belgium), M&Ms for Valentine's Day, a cross-cut shredder, mini-croissants (L'oven), Plastic garbage bags and freezer bags, Bel Gioso Fontina, Parmesean and Asiago cheeses, German (Deutsche Kueche) spaetzle, tortellini, pastas, CFR light bulbs, assorted spices, Cheez-it (tm) type crackers in the shape of SHARKS (great for Shark Week!), tortillas and Arizona Iced Tea. This is not your main shop, but it is a good source to save on plastic bags (freezer and garbage), aluminum foil, light bulbs, as well as items that are usually overpriced or expensive due to marketing campaigns by Kraft, General Foods and the usual suspects. The household goods are usually manufactured in China, so examine pots and pans for PFOAs, plastic dish ware for BPAs, if you are so inclined. ALDI changes its specials every week, sometimes the emphasis is on Italian, German (with imported foods, I clean out the store then), Asian, Mexican, Healthy, etc. ALDI has an iPad/iPhone app that is incredibly convenient and highlights the weekly specials. As an aside, Trader Joe's, the more "modern" and "consumer oriented" chain refuses to make a TJ's shopping app due to the concern of providing their "shoppers with the lowest prices." Yah, really? When ALDI has a shopping app and Trader Joe's does not, I start wondering what Trader's Tech department is up to... Is Joey in produce also maintaining the web site? Well, I wouldn't be surprised.. Anyway, their sister company, ALDI, is thoroughly modernized in that regard. ALDI also offers appliances (Crofton), medical equipment (Welby), lawn and garden (Gardenline), household goods (St. John/Crofton), etc. on a weekly special basis. This market prices their foods significantly less expensively than even discount grocers. The store has no amenities... everything is out in boxes, there are no shelves... but prices are generally unbeatable. My only gripe is that there are items you can't get that force you to go to a regular market, so this store can only supplement your weekly shopping. For example, although they have great prices on apples and oranges, you can't find a banana. It is mostly grab what you can. Oh, do bring your own bags. read more

The Rockaway aldi has the worst customer service in actual history. Went there today and got just a bag full of stuff. The cashier lady grabbed the bag and said "get over here and hold it open" so my boyfriend did. She threw my GF wraps in the bottom of the bag after I said wait , and continued to pile shit on top of it and broke them all. The last item was a glass jar that I picked up before she can put in the bag because I didn't want it to break, and she ripped it out of my hand and threw it on top of all the stuff in my bag. So now I'm annoyed and trying to slide my card and it said error 3 times and she yelled at me to swipe my card a different way so I did. Then contained to yell at my 25 year old boyfriend for holding the bag a way she didn't like. Long story short every time I go there they have horrible customer service and I will not be going back there ever again.
