I stumbled upon Chrysalis driving to a different vineyard/winery. I found the entire location super cute--I can only imagine the views when the leaves are on the trees and/or changing colors. There's plenty of seating for a bunch of small groups and even space for family groups. Make sure you venture everywhere. I failed to go upstairs... I was greeted by a nice lady and helped by two gentlemen (one took my order and the other one poured my flight). Not being familiar with this location or its wines, I decided on the "can't decide" flight. Should I find myself out that way again, I'll definitely give it another try. My boyfriend and I stopped by for Friday evening dinner and drinks. We ordered 1 white wine flight, the margarita pizza, wasabi deviled eggs, and 1 bottle of the 2023 Albarino Verde. We really enjoyed the Albarino Verde. This wine was crisp, refreshing, and perfect for a summer day. The pineapple and grapefruit were the most noticeable notes. The deviled eggs were good but not quite worth $12. I didn't taste any wasabi which was disappointing. The margarita pizza was great! I would definitely get this again. Simple but delicious. The dough itself was really good and we enjoyed the thinness of the crust. It also came out piping hot. The winery itself is very pretty with a lot of outdoor seating. This particular winery is famous for its Norton wines. I did a flight at the tasting and did not like any of them. My wife did a white flight and found then just okay. But it is not the wine itself that causes the low review, because I know wine is a personal taste. The entire experience was just not very well executed at all. No one there for our lunch and tasting seemed to know much at all about what they were doing. We stopped for lunch and it was okay, but haphazard on their part. You can do a flight with lunch, but not a tasting we were told. I can see that in a crowd that they don't want food mixed with the tasting, but our group of 6 were the only people in the entire place from beginning to end. Because we wanted to sit, we got a server, not anyone who knew much of the wine. Overall, it was just not a good experience. We purchased nothing, which is rare for us at a winery. read more

Pretty outdoor views and quick service, we ordered the first flight option as they told us their roses were sweet. The first Alberto white was great- pretty crisp and almost clear in flavor. However the rest of the wines were progressively worse- the reserva was really acidic, the Viogner tasted like matches, and the rose was just bleh. Perhaps we didn't have the palette for it or we got a bad batch but definitely did not buy any wine. Food menu looked fun- Thai pizza, crab Rangoon pizza, etc so definitely will come back to try that in the future. read more

First of all, we are familiar with the Norton wines and enjoy them immensely. We have visited Chrysalis in the past and had good experiences. However, we will never return. We arrived at approximately 5:30 pm when the posted closing time is 6 pm. Our plan was just to pick up a couple of bottles. We arrived to find the doors locked and two employees sneaking to their vehicles. We spoke to them and asked if they had closed early. We were informed that they were sorry but it was just too nice of an evening. Obviously they were more interested in getting out of there to enjoy their evening than to fulfill their posted time obligations. Thanks for your response. While we were at a side entrance, the employees were leaving through the main entrance, all the lights were turned off, and no one was left in the building. Nice try, but even more indicative of CYA than concern for your customers. read more

We had an amazing time at Chrysalis. The staff was so friendly and welcoming, which really helped. It wasn't super busy during our visit, which was nice. I love that they have a childfree area. We really, really enjoyed the wine. I did the dry flight and my friend went with the Norton flight. I was really impressed by the wine. The few VA wineries I've been to in the past few years have left me unimpressed. But Chrysalis has great wine. My favorite was the alvarinho verde. I got a glass after and then my friend got a glass of her favorite, the Sarah's Patio. They also have great food so you don't need to worry about bringing anything (which isn't allowed anyway). The pizza crust could've used more color, but overall the flavor was on point. I'm looking forward to returning in the spring as they have a gorgeous outdoor area. read more

Food took a while to come. An employee scolded us like naughty schoolchildren for where we put our lawn games and for not calling ahead when we were more than 8 people. We also got a Marguerite pizza. Pretty DISAPPOINTED to be honest. If I could give this place zero stars I definitely would. Immediately coming with a large group of 20 to celebrate our friends birthday, we were all trying to order bottles of wine, food, and cheese; there was an older elderly woman, Laurie, who seems to either be an owner that immediately targeted our friends for being "too drunk" when we only had a few seltzers on the bus we used to safely get to this winery. We were trying to get wine and she immediately told us all to go outside in the 98 degree weather and that we were not welcomed inside due to our large group. Again, we never caused any disruptions to the vibes and it made us feel super unwelcome as a group of Asians. I couldn't help but think that this was a racially profiled interaction. Then we went back downstairs to order pizza and a few bottles of wine. They have 4 tasting flights available for $12. I ended up getting a bottle of their Mariposa (it's a dry rose) and it wasn't bad. The bottles were reasonably priced! The pizza was really good. My review rating is based on how I felt the staff interacted or rather did not. Even when we ordered the pizza and wine, they didn't say anything! Chrysalis is one of only two vineyards that are open in Middleburg on Saturdays past 6. Definitely a hard to find feature among Virginia vineyards. Some bonuses are that they are dog and children/kid friendly. Dogs must remain outdoors. The main house is gorgeous. Two stories, wood, stone, ample space, clean. ... They did a great job with its design. There are plenty of tasting lanes and there's plenty of extras and food to buy as well. To my surprise, they even sell gluten free crackers. The upper deck is reserved for adults and the lower main floor has reserved seating for families with children (if you want to stay inside). But why would you? That's what a vineyard is all about - the VIEWS. This property is also gorgeous and super relaxing. It's secluded between rolling hills and very quiet. You sometimes forget you're 30 miles from the city's hustle n bustle. To my pleasure, it was surprisingly not that busy when I got there a little past 6. The service was great too. You could tell they all got along and enjoyed chatting with one another, but they were also very helpful and courteous with me while trying to decide what to get (as a new patron). One of the best features about this vineyard are the prices. You'd be hard pressed to find glasses of wine for less than $10 at their competitors. I couldn't believe it. It's definitely one strong reason I would recommend them to everyone. Plus the wine was decent. It wasn't a gross cheap $8 glass - it was a casual sipper that could accommodate most palates. I had both the cheaper glass and the most expensive glass (which is comparable to average prices elsewhere). All in all, this place is great. This is a beautiful vineyard and a nice escape from DC. Unfortunately the day we went it was a pretty long line and even longer wait. The staff did their best to move the flow of people in line but it was an unexpected wait for our food. The pizza was good but we probably should have brought our own or ate ahead of arriving. They have a good amount of seating but the day we went (August) it was so beautiful that it was packed. I recommend bringing a blanket just in case. The views at Chrysalis are great! I also love that they have some outdoor tables with built in heaters, which are so helpful on the cold pandemic days! The staff was also super friendly! I got the Norton sampler. Half the wines tasted bad (like wood or too sour) but the other half were really nice. I enjoyed two in particular that were on the slightly sweeter side because they weren't very acidic. I also enjoyed that they sold fresh, hot pizza! It was perfect for warming up and soaking up all the wine haha. Unfortunately, I ordered the chicken Alfredo pizza but it didn't come with any chicken. Toppings were pretty sparse in general. We definitely enjoyed the ones with the alfredo sauce. Something about the cheese and dough in general everything tasted really fresh and we left no slices As for the wine, we had the Albarino, Viognier, Tximeleta, Sarah's Patio white, Snobby Bit$% and the Norton Schitz. We definitely enjoyed the Snobby B the most and bought around 4 bottles. Overall, this is a great winery and its maintained really well. The crowds started to pour in later in the day. But, we didn't wait long for our drinks or pizza. You get great views of Middleburg, but definitely not as nice as the neighboring wineries. Theres plenty of seating for small to large parties and a great upstairs outdoor area. The only complaint I could see is the parking. It's best to come early when it opens. Best Norton wines here! My parents took us to Chrysalis Vineyards, as they're known for their Norton grapes. Many of the surrounding wineries actually get their Norton grapes from Chrysalis. We visited Chrysalis Vineyards in the late afternoon on a weekday right before it was closing and there were still many parties here. The tasting room was nice with green space around it and tables far apart to social distance from one another. Outside food and drinks are not allowed here, as they have their own kitchen, most notably for their pizzas. We ended up doing a flight, which you can choose from any of the wines! This differs from other surrounding wineries, so it was already a win here. The menu had a large selection of various wines, and the most Norton wines that I've seen. My boyfriend and I shared four Norton wines, which wasn't even all of them. Yet all those we tasted were fantastic and the bottle prices were much more affordable than other wineries we visited. I highly recommended visiting Chrysalis Vineyards as part of your Virginia wine tasting experience. read more

They have a large facility with a ton of indoor and outdoor seating areas and a lot of covered outdoor seating. The wines were good and more to my taste than most of the wines in this region. Although I didn't get a chance to try it they also have what I'm told is very good pizza. The set up is more like a brewery in that you get your wine and order food from the main bars rather than go through a guided tasting at a bar. Worst winery I've ever been to; wine is great everything else is awful. Customer service & care for their patrons overall = 0 stars. Where to begin? Their flights are pre-selected (white, red, etc.) and they don't want to deviate so you get what is in that flight (versus choosing what you'd like to sample & potentially buy). Their outdoor tables have a built in heat source and are spaced out for COVID purposes; however, their staff refused to activate the heat source at the table I was seated at, citing that because the tables were too close to one another it wasn't appropriate (tables are spaced 6+ feet apart and have four seats per table). Wha, whaaa whaaaaat?! Their staff will not serve you outside so if you're seated outside so you must go into the main entrance and wait in line with all the other customers. Now, does that make much sense from an ops or safety perspective, folks? I think not. So the lines get long.. just like a take out or grocery store. Not the experience I'd expect for the $$$ you shell out at these places; I want to support local but there are so many other VA wineries that are amazing, treat their customers well (as they should, that's the business you're in). So maybe you folks need to take another look at your business model because there's some serious room to improve. Unless of course all you care about is making a buck.... and I can tell you on a gorgeous Sat (it was cold but a nice day) this place wasn't packed which says a lot. The older gentleman behind the bar was very pushy and made us feel like we were idiots that had never been to a winery before. Nice venue. Pleasant place to hang for an hour or so. If you're drinking red, stick to the Papillon. The rest of the reds are primarily made with the Norton grape. If you enjoy most red wine, you will not likely enjoy anything made with the Norton grape - it is nearly undrinkable. The local Gouda was good though. read more
