TL;DR Quick and reasonably priced service, genuine and thoughtful mechanics, might have issues with timeliness. Would use again for certain types of work. My '87 911 Carrera needed new ball joints, as I heard some occasional clank while driving slow in the Mission. I know - cautious driving in the Mission is unheard of. My plan was to do the job myself, all in the parts and a special tool would be about $480-525 and probably 4-5 hours of my time. Curiously, I wanted to know what a shop would charge. This is where the story begins... Called Aldo (he's a character) on Monday morning and he said the parts would be there in the afternoon and it'd take him a couple of hours on Tuesday afternoon to get it done. All in - $490. Now, if you're following along here and know how this works you might be thinking how is it possible for parts and labor on a car like this to be lower than the parts themselves? Economies of scale for some things and shipping logistics partnerships? I'm still not sure but I verified the parts are the same. So I dropped the car off and checked back a couple of hours later. Aldo informs me that the pin which connects the ball joint to the strut is incorrect that he needs to find the correct one and that the car will be ready Wednesday morning. All good, I was having a root canal re-done Wednesday am and could pick the car up after (exciting week right?). I popped by Wednesday at noon after my procedure and I notice the car is still on the lift, which isn't usually a good sign, and the front suspension was disconnected. He and I chatted and I looked at the balljoint and sure enough, the pin and top portion of the part were a mismatch. I read through all the manuals and forums and noted that the connecting pin required a wedge-shaped notch and this was semi-circular. Aldo said he needed a different pin and I stated he needed a different balljoint with the correct wedge notch. He claimed I didn't know what I was talking about and that everyone I talked to (Porsche as well) didn't either as he has done these since '72. I have respect for this and he said he'd find the correct pin. After a number of phone calls (me to him, me to Porsche, Aldo to various parts sources, Aldo to Porsche, ...) he was able to have a source send him the correct parts... which (drum roll) was a different balljoint (wedge notch) as I originally and continually suggested. I was able to finally get my car on Thursday evening - he and his master mechanic got everything completed. Aldo is a nice guy but got sideways with the part and his ego/experience. These things happen, he's got legacy knowledge (i.e. very set in his ways) and I have respect for that. Just know that going in. The car felt great - solid steering and the clank was gone. I'm a little delayed in this review. I had some "work" done on my 964 by this repair shop but come to find out after having my car for about 9 months for very simple minor repairs Aldo tried to charge me for new parts i already had installed right before he got my car from another shop. After explaining this to him he took those charges off my bill. I went and got my car and once I got home I noticed a couple items on my car missing from the interior. A few years back when I had a 996 C4S with a check engine light on, I called Aldo to see if I could swing by and have him check it out. He said, "sure, come on in." Upon arrival; he ran out to my car and checked the codes and cleared them on the spot and said, "you're good to go." He never tried to up sell me, give any false information about my car or ask for payment. It definitely left a lasting impression on me. Fast forward, after a few years of dabbling around with Audi's, I picked up a 997.2 Turbo S and while driving, I scraped something on a steel slab covering roadwork on a decline; that caused a slight coolant leak. I had to turn back from a 5 day roadtrip barely 50 miles in, due to seeing the "Minimum oil level reached" warning in my Panamera 4S. Through a series of bizarre coincidences i ended up concluding I'd damaged the oil pan n leaked most of the oil. For example, my PDK transmission went out, and although the replacement quoted from the dealer was expensive ($15k), he called around and advised that going with the dealer was the best option despite the high price tag. Additionally, I picked up a nail in my tire on a Friday night, and he accepted my request to hold the car and fix the tire Monday morning after I took it in last second on Saturday afternoon. Can't say enough about how easy my first service was with Aldo. I recently purchased a 1999 C4 and wanted to have Aldo check the clutch and IMS. After a few hassle-free days the car was ready. Aldo checked to make sure the IMS was updated, changed my clutch, then did a full fluid replacement. All under my requested budget! Long due review for Aldo's. Really honest guy and saved me a tons of money for my 951. One of the screws attaching the oil gasket to the engine was broken - with the bottom half still stuck inside the screw hole. Other mechanics said it would need to take off the engine head, a $3000 job for a little piece of, whatever you wanna call it. Aldo said he would try to take it out using a hand drill, but no guarantee it would work, since the space is so tight. It did, and saved me some major $$$. Aldo had a lot of experience, yet still had the heart and soul in his work to think outside the box. He might not appear as the nicest guy in the first sight, but he is a cool down-to-earth person when you get to know him. read more

I no longer bring my Porsche here but used to get fluids changed regularly. Had scheduled brake and rotor replacement but when I drove off I had to push the pedal to floor before braking engaged. Apparently no test drive, definitely no rotor break-in after service. Aldo was ok with this. "They changed your brakes fair and square" he said. Wasn't able to properly bleed the brakes. Wanted to change my master cylinder which somehow failed during the brake service (!?) I spent a few hours bleeding and power flushed the lines and everything was fine. I called on Thursday because I needed to have my brakes looked at, and they told me I could bring it in Friday or Saturday, so I brought it in Saturday and he immediately looked at them. Apparently they're only squeaky because of the weather, and they look nearly new, so he told me nothing to do and didn't charge me at all. The service was very reasonably priced, and much less than what Porsche dealership quoted me at. Among the things I requested was a PDK oil flush. Aldo convinced me that it was to soon to do this given my mileage, even though it would have been money in his pocket. Frankly the peace of mind of having an honest mechanic is invaluable. First, Aldo seems like a nice guy...however, I didn't need to meet a nice guy, I needed my car repaired. I called Aldo about a secondary air injection CEL light on my Porsche 911 Turbo. He said to bring it on in and they could get started right away. I took it in and also asked him to change the plugs and coils since I was at 60,000 miles. He said no problem and give him a couple days. Well...3 weeks later, after many attempts to get an update on the car, and his many promises (on the phone) to both return my calls and get my car fixed, I ended up having to go down to the shop and state that I needed the car done. He promised to get it done (again) in a couple days. Finally, 3 days later (3.5 weeks in), I called him and he said it was done. Great! So I went to pick up the car, he hands me the receipt which only has the coils and plugs on it. I asked about the secondary air issue and he said "Oh, we haven't gotten to that yet". After rolling my eyes and begging him to please please please fix my car, he said he would in a couple days. Finally, two days later (going on 4 weeks now), he said it is done. He was supposed to smoke test the car to try to find the problem, and ended up just changing a couple of valves without doing any smoke testing. I drove the car away, and within about 2 hours the check engine light for the secondary air system was back on. I took the car to another shop, who, in 1 day smoke tested the car and found a big leak...and after waiting a couple days for porsche parts that had to be ordered, had fixed the leak. One of the few remaining old-school mechanics in San Francisco, or indeed anywhere! Aldo is a no-nonsense mechanic who goes for a drive with you, diagnoses the problem with you, gets to the point without beating around the bush, and, above all, is honest! (I know, scandalous!). He tells me when something does not need repair, and even when he does not know what the problem is. In the last case, he usually offers a hunch based on his experience, and they have always been correct! Over the years Aldo has worked on my Porsche and VW. From a gearbox and clutch job, changing the starter motor, ball bearings, to simple oil changes, he is quick, efficient, and very reasonably priced. Be warned, this is not one of those namby-pamby service centers with soft music playing that ply you with coffee and girly magazines while you wait. The place feels like an honest-to-god workshop should - cars on hoists, the clanking of metal to metal, and tecnicians in overalls. Finally, this place has got to be a well-kept secret. I say this because, as you walk in to the shop, you see a bunch of jeeps being repaired. You walk past them and only then get to see the collection of classic Porsche cars in various stages of repair! My first experience with Aldo would prove to be representative of all that have since followed... I was referred to Aldo through a trusted friend and fellow Porsche owner ...I simply needed an oil change for my 968. I came by to drop off the car around lunchtime over the weekend. I walked into the garage and, after a little confusion walking past all the Jeeps (I wasn't certain if I was in the right place - this was at a previous location where Aldo shared garage space with another business), I eventually came across several beautiful Porsche's (mostly 911s) at the back and realized I must have been given the correct address. It was during the 2010 World Cup, which Aldo was watching with two friends, one with four legs, whom I quickly learned was very defensive of Aldo. I had called in previously, so Aldo knew why I was there and was expecting me. He offered me a glass of wine and also to share his cheese plate. I certainly found this unusual, but had no complaints and quickly came to realize that this was not at just another Porsche shop. I enjoyed a glass of wine, some cheese and salami, and watched a little of the World Cup. I shared updates about my friend who had referred me and we discussed other matters that had nothing to do with anything automotive, including how to fend off the occasional, but certain and pending attacks of the four-legged beast. After my glass of wine, I left Aldo and his friends to finish their lunch and went to run errands in the area. When I pick up my car later that day I was surprised how little he had charged me. I didn't think too much of this, however, since I was new to his shop and thought he might want to make a good impression to capture my repeat business (it was only an oil change after all). However, every time I have returned to his shop since, including for some more expensive/serious repairs (most recently a water pump replacement which is not a minor issue on a 968), I have found I spent less money than I had expected, and this given complete satisfaction with the work that was performed (often beyond expectations). More importantly, I left feeling that Aldo had been 110% upfront and honest and that there was full transparency in the work he had billed me for. Every time I leave Aldo's shop my confidence in his work and appreciation for his style of doing business are not only confirmed, but amplified ...and my 968 always somehow seems to run even better than it did previously. This is my first review on Yelp. And I write this with Aldo, holding 5 stars on Yelp with 36 reviews at the time of this writing, not really needing it. When I find another business in the San Francisco Bay Area that I feel this strongly about, and with which I have this level of positive experience with, I will write my second review. Aldo is very honest, hard working, and ethical. When I first started looking for someone to work on my car, his quotes always came in cheaper than other places. Once I trusted him and stopped looking around, he always provided great service and great prices. I owned my Porsche Boxster for 4 years and took it to him for everything - regular maintenance, when I was rear ended, when I needed new tires, everything! When I had scratches/dings on my door, he brought in his friend who specialized in paint. His friend also gave me a significantly lower quote than another place I had checked out first. I took my '87 Porsche there for a simple cat-back exhaust replacement and he was able to find a used part in the East Bay for much cheaper than I could. His shop completed the repair in just a few days, during which I was able to get updates from Aldo on his cell! This never happens, mechanics in this city just don't have the patience for customer service. The exhaust turned out perfect and he was able to fix some other odds and ends for a very low cost. My car actually broke down today and I was able to call Aldo on his cell phone and he met me at his shop even on his day off. Yet another great Yelp find. There's a reason Aldo has a 5 Star Rating from 100% of the reviewers. He's awesome. A solid, stand up guy with a chihuahua that keeps guard over the shop. My Boxter needed it's 7500 mile service, so I Yelped and found Aldo. He greeted me with a warm handshake and it was all uphill from there. He showed me the checklist of what that entailed (basically checking a bunch of things, and an oil change). He quoted the price - and, it's inline with what other reviewers wrote - about 1/4 of the dealer cost. Yay, no Ramen for me this month. When he found out I needed to go back to work about a mile away, he refused to let me take a cab ("I can't let you spend that much money for a ride") and gave me a ride AND offered to come get me when he is done. That's the "wow" and exactly how a service business keeps customers for life - even if they are infrequent. Many reviewers use the term "old school mechanic".
