I have heard so many recommendations about Alex from neighbors, that he was the first person/company I thought of when I needed an appliance repair specialist. In fact I called him for two issues in three months. The first time, I needed Alex to assess my dishwasher, which a plumber (who was installing something different) thought was the cause of my recurring air gap overflows. I have had three handymen and two plumbers get involved with the air gap by disconnecting the tubing from the garbage disposal, cleaning out gunk, it works for a while and then overflows. I put little food down my garbage disposal and pre-wash my dishes/glasses very well before loading the dishwasher so I'm frustrated by the recurring overflows. I had even been talked into getting the kitchen line hydrojetted which Alex told me wasn't related. Alex checked out the dishwasher, assured me it was working correctly and had nothing to do with the air gap issue. Alex focused on how to save me money by showing me what I can do myself. He showed me how to clean out the air gap mechanism from above and even configured a wire hanger that would reach all the way through the opening in the garbage disposal. I have since also ordered some air gap cleaning brushes and tools from Amazon and watched some videos on this. Alex was friendly, reassuring and really didn't want me to fall prey to work people who might be trying to upsell me and not solving a simple issue. A few months later, my dishwasher wouldn't drain at the end of the cycle, so some hot water remained at the bottom. It wouldn't respond to the "drain" button either. I called Alex's office and the lovely lady who does his scheduling looked up my previous records, told me that Alex was just starting to cough and may be getting sick so it would be a couple of days. I explained to her that I'm immunocompromised and really can't risk being around someone who is sick. I asked if she knew someone else. She said they had someone working in my area who could be at my house in about an hour. That technician, Nick, turned out to be very knowledgeable, polite and kept saying his top priority was making customers happy. He assessed the dishwasher, realized there was an issue with the drain pump. He took much of the dishwasher apart and found a large piece of glass stuck in the pump, preventing it from moving. He got everything working well, tested it thoroughly before leaving and never rushed even though it was getting late and he had one more customer on his schedule. I even called Alex a couple of days later to say how pleased I was with Nick and I appreciated that they had someone available so quickly. This is an outstanding service provider and I highly recommend them! Alex had to replace a control board on my hood fan today and we realized this was not going to be an easy job because of the tight fit of the hood (see photo). He took great care and time to ensure that there was no damage to the ceiling while balancing himself on a large ladder....not an easy task and probably could have asked to have it removed by someone else. Found this guy on my Nextdoor app. Alex was very accommodating and had the next day available. My dryer has been screaming since I had the vents cleaned. It was weird cuz it was working before that so I've been doing my laundry at the laundromat. I called in the morning and got a same day appointment with a three hour window. Our GE big monogram refrigerator went out right before Thanksgiving. It's so important to have a local appliance repairperson I can TRUST! There was condensation on the inside of our 20+ year old fridge. Alex came out and identified the problem right away--replace the hinges, and thereby have the door seal again. Really appreciated the "fix-don't-replace" approach. He even pointed out how we could get our washing machine basin to drain better without doing any major repair to it at all! I can't be more grateful for Alex Appliances and started the New Year of right because of Alex. Alex is the most patient, most knowledgeable and most generous appliance repair person I have ever met in my entire life. I have a brand new LG washer that always giving me an LE error code. I went on Yelp, for several quotes from other companies, most of them wanting $65+ to come out, and quoting me about $300+ for parts and labor. After finding out that I live outside his travel radius, Alex spent 30 minutes on the phone with me, he ran some tests, he ran his diagnostics, he helped me diagnose the issue, he helped explain to me what was going on, he helped me order the part and now it works!!! Unfortunately I have to lower my review of Alex Appliances. Alex repaired our older Subzero, a model 561, last November 2018. He came after the previous repair outfit sent by Fidelity Home Insurance (Best Experience Appliance Repair) wrongly installed (according to Alex) a new compressor that shorted out immediately. There is no question that Alex is better for these sorts of repairs than Mike from Best Experience Appliance Repair. However, a few months after Alex did his job, our refrigerator started heating up. For some reason our home insurance couldn't authorize Alex Appliances to come back on this job, so we enlisted C&P Appliance in Escondido, with which we have had good experiences in the past. According to C&P Appliance, Alex had installed the wrong compressor into our refrigerator. As an older Subzero 561, it needs an R12 compressor and Alex had ordered and installed an R134 compressor. I did speak to Alex on the phone after C&P Appliance left, and he said that he had installed a "hotshot" hybrid gas into our refrigerator that would work with both R12 and R134 compressors, but this did not answer why he had installed an R134 compressor into a refrigerator that called for an R12 compressor. I also verified by speaking to a third refrigerator repairman we know from out of town, that my refrigerator needs an R12 compressor, and that putting an R134 compressor into it, even with hotshot gas, would lead to problems. He concurred with C&P Appliance that Alex had installed the wrong compressor. The other reason I believe that it is true that Alex installed the wrong compressor is that from the start, after his repair, adjusting the refrigerator temperature control didn't seem to do much, which seemed strange. In any case, within a few months of Alex's repair job, our refrigerator was failing, and pushing temperatures over 50 degrees. C&P Appliance installed the correct R12 compressor, the same correct hotshot hybrid gas, and also replaced the capacitor set up (which C&P said was jerry rigged by Alex and not factory) and even replaced all the condenser coils because they said a replacement of the entire tubing was necessitated since the wrong compressor had been in the system for a few months, and they needed to take no chances and bring everything back to factory specs. C&P also installed a new freezer evaporator fan because the old one was starting to get noisy, and a new filter for between the new condenser and the coils. Now our refrigerator is cooling beautifully around 35 degrees and quiet, thanks to C&P Appliance. The temp control works properly and does lower or raise the refrigerator temperature. I waited a couple weeks to make sure all was well before I wrote this review of Alex Appliances, to verify by comparing the refrigerator operation before and after, that indeed what Alex had done was wrong, and what C&P had done was right. Because of great customer service as far as being available by phone or text, and because he obviously cares about doing the job right and seems to be honest, I leave Alex Appliance's review at 3 stars, but I can't go any higher than that based on that he did install the wrong compressor into our Subzero - if we hadn't had Fidelity Home Warranty, we would have been in real trouble having to fight with Alex over a new compressor and the other parts that were apparently ruined by his improper install. (We did still have to pay a second deductible payment to Fidelity for this second repair, so this improper Alex repair did cost us some money, and cost us a lot of time dealing with a failing refrigerator that was overheating.) read more

My mom can be a bit difficult to please so I was glad to hear that she found him extremely polite and helpful. She assures me that she wants him to come out of anything else needs repair. I found Alex Appliances online and called at 4:45 with an urgent request for same day service (after several other companies told me they could not come out until the middle of next week). Although they were booked for the day, Alex said that he had some time before his next appointment and was nearby. He was able to come and diagnose the problem within 20 minutes!!! Now that is service!!! He was very communicative about the timing of his arrival, identifying the issue, and reaching out to me as requested with a detailed invoice. He gave me all of the information that I would need to have the manufacturer cover the warrantied part. It is often difficult to know what level of professionalism you will get when you cold call a small business, but Alex was incredibly professional from the beginning. I really wanted to like Alex Appliances after reading all the positive reviews on them. Unfortunately I can't say I had a great experience after calling him. My refrigerator / freezer stopped getting cold. I checked online to see possible problems. I tried cleaning the coils and that seemed to help for a week or two, but then it started warming up again. After reading through some reviews of local repair shops, I decided to call Alex. Seemed fairly reputable based on many reviews. After contacting him, I was able to make an appointment for late that day/ evening. I was grateful that he would schedule something so late in the day. He came in and seemed pleasant enough. Nothing out special though. He came in, opened up the panel and did some tests with the fridge controls and his electric meter. He said it could be one of two things but not both. Either the board or the compressor, but not both. He exchanged the board and said, if it's not making ice in the next 24 hours, call me. I paid a pretty hefty price for a "used" board. He said he gets them refurbished so he can charge customers less than the other guys. That's a plus, but unfortunately I wasn't able to keep the old part to tell if it was indeed not working. Hours later, it wasn't getting cold and things started melting in the fridge. I had just gone to Costco and LOADED UP too. What a bummer! So I called him back and we made another appointment. Unfortunately with a weekend, it wasn't the next day so more food needed to be tossed out. When he arrived for the second appt, he said let me replace the condenser to see if that works. I asked about the board he had replaced previously and he said he sent it back to a repair shop to be refurbished. I wanted to know if the new condenser would work with the old board. However, something was wrong with the one he had. He said he used another brand on many refrigerators and they all worked great. For some reason, this one didn't work. He really couldn't explain it either after telling me he has never had a problem like this before. Still nothing cold coming out of my freezer or fridge. Alex then suggested contacting the manufacturer to see if they would replace the compressor under warranty. He couldn't do warranty work for some reason. Something about him not being an authorized repair tech for the manufacturer. I agreed and the next day, we had another repair tech come out. The new guy diagnosed the problem as being a bad compressor. He replaced it and within hours, we had ice and a cold fridge. I called Alex to figure out what happened with the repair/ diagnosis that he had done. I reiterated to him that he said it could be one or the other, but not both. I couldn't set a time to meet with him for another week. So he initially replaced a board and that didn't fix the problem. Another tech came and replaced the compressor and that fixed it. He actually brought in a board and said it was my old one. He put it in the fridge and it didn't function properly. Kind of sketchy... Anyway, long story short, I was told it would be one of two things, but not both. Both items were replaced which cost me double! When Alex did eventually come back a week later with "my old board" he couldn't explain why it didn't work after he changed out the board and installed a "new" compressor. After some negotiating, I he did agree to a partial refund since the work he did, didn't fix my problem. It still doesn't help that he replaced two parts, charged me for each and my fridge still didn't work. After the first appliance repair guy never showed up, my contractor contacted Alex Appliances and had him come over to check my stovetop. There had been some water damage and two of the knobs wouldn't turn. Alex was right on time, called me 20 minutes before getting here. He completely took the Kitchenaid stovetop apart, down to the wires and connections under the top layer. He checked everything and said it would be about $500 to fix it, because each part that needed to be replaced was around $50-80 dollars, plus labor. My contractor found a replacement stovetop and the guy said it would be $120 to install so we'll see. He only charged me $35 for the initial service call, and he was there over an hour. So I feel his charge is justified and he seems honest. Not very personable, but efficient and honest. What more can you ask. read more

Alex is very communicative- explains what options we have at each stage. I called for my broken ice maker and my dishwasher. He looked at the ice maker and explained why it needed to be replaced (corroded in the places it moves) He worked on my dishwasher and told me the problem could be two different things. He tried the first but it didn't fix the problem so the cost of this work was applied to the other solution which made the final price reasonable. Overall, I thought he is knowledgeable and fair in his pricing. He seems to be pretty busy, so it might be a couple days before you get service if it's a busy time. But apparently there are a lot of flakey people out there too, so he might be able to squeeze you in sooner if people aren't available during their pre-arranged time slot. read more

Alex came to repair our refrigerators ice maker, he said it needed to be replaced. He ordered one and came back a couple of weeks later and installed it. It worked fine again for 8 months then stopped working. When I called I was reminded the ice maker only had a 3 month warranty. They nicely explained they would still charge me a the regular service fee just to check it. I felt I shouldn't be charged to check his own work. I'm going to try some place else and hope for longer lasting results. Both the staff and Alex were nice to deal with though unfortunately the work done was not a long term solution. read more
