I called Alex Appliances after seeing them recommended on NextDoor. He arrived at the beginning of my three-hour window, and quickly figured out why my dryer was not generating any heat. He gave me an estimate to fix the problem, which to my ears sounded like $35, so I agreed. He fixed the dryer, so I'll give him kudos for that. However, when I asked him what I owed him, he told me $285. I told him I thought it was $35, and he just sort of scoffed. All told, he was at my house for maybe an hour. A very expensive hour. If you decide to call him, I recommend you ask for a written estimate before he does the work so as to avoid any misunderstanding about his prices. Update: Although my dryer now has heat, the drum is not spinning. So I take back the kudos on fixing the dryer. read more

What a nice guy! I called because my refrigerator was frozen over. He asked me what kind it was he told me that it would be very rare for that to happen. He gave me some troubleshooting things to try first. And guess what? It is fixed! He spent about 10 minutes with me on the phone no charge of course and never came out and told me what to do over the phone. This guy will be in my Rolodex for years to come. I've used Alex for over 10 years...several calls for my built-in refrigerator and other kitchen issues. He's a little quirky (in a good way) and got the job done. But recently I had a service call (for same refrigerator) where I felt quite a bit overcharged. He came out, looked at it and diagnosed a possibility of 2 issues, and quoted the cost to fix it. I agreed. So nothing underhanded or dishonest. But the repair was a quick plastic bracket and about 15 minutes of time, for $170. I hoped he would cut me a break since it was so quick and the repair was the easier of the 2 potential issues. But no luck. I didn't think much of it, though it bugged me. I recently had a stove go out, and decided to call Michels Appliance repair in Oceanside. The service call was only $30 (vs. $45 for Alex), and the time spent and repair was very fair and reasonable. And after using Alex all these years, I was pleased to have a different experience that kind of opened my eyes. Alex is fine...good work, not dishonest. But maybe his business is strong enough where he appears to be taking advantage of his service calls. read more

I am struggling right now to be honest. We hired Alex to fix our refrigerator ice maker and he has been out to see us 3 times. He has replaced the ice maker and just today the pump. All new equipment and all very expensive. Many different explanations of the problem. After all of this we went from an ice maker that does not work to one we could not turn on to now an ice maker that makes no ice after it was allegedly fixed today... the jury is out. I am not certain if this will work for us or not but will keep you updated. Right now I am none too pleased to have spent this much for less than nothing. read more

I had Alex out in 2013 to repair my broken dryer. He sent a tech who did a quick and courteous repair. $220 felt steep, but if this company is as good as everyone on yelp says, it would be worth it, right? Fast forward a year-and-a-half. The dryer breaks again. I was a little disappointed that the $220 repair didn't last a little longer, but decided to call Alex again. First, he said he doesn't work on my type of dryer. I reminded him that in 2013, his company repaired it, so then he says he does, and we set an appointment for the next day. At our scheduled appointment time, 4:30pm on a Friday, I get a text message from Alex, saying he is 15 minutes away and asking me to confirm my appointment. I immediately text back to confirm that we were still on. 7 minutes later, I get another text from Alex, saying that our appointment is now cancelled. I try calling him and it goes straight to voicemail. When Alex finally picks up, he says he isn't getting texts or calls because he was in a cell 'dead zone'. He says he tried to call me but again blames the 'dead zone'. It is only 4:45pm. I ask if he's planning to come back and he says no...he's moving on to another customer???? I remind alex that we had an appointment. I came home early and sat around for this appointment. We spoke this morning and confirmed the appointment. I am still within your appointment window. I honestly don't know of a dead zone within 15 minutes of West Escondido. I ask if we can reschedule. He says I have to call his office to do that. So basically I'm screwed. An overpriced repair that didn't last, and now stuck without a dryer all weekend. Thanks for nothing. read more

He came right away, and was professional about the appointment. He was quick to diagnose the issue with my washer, which was a switch. However, I think the price is way to steep for a repair that would literally take 15 minutes. My plumber or other trades don't get paid that much per hour. But if you are willing and able to pay for convenience, then I"m sure you'd be happy. read more

First off this is two reviews in one. Our first review was when our refrigerator went out 10 months ago. We tried shopping for a new one, but it did not cost justify just trying to have our broken one fixed. Saw reviews for Alex on both Yelp and Kudzu so we gave Alex a call. He went through some thorough tests and explained what was the problem. Gave an estimate and was cheaper than anybody else. To this date, our refrigerator is working like new. Our second review was for our AC unit that currently went south on us. It is summer and sleeping at night was uncomfortable. Called Alex again and came out the next day. At first, I thought it was the refrigerant was low. Again, Alex ran through some tests and found the problem in no-time. Reasonable repair price and definitely trustworthy in my eyes. Thanks Alex. I called Alex because of the good reviews here and got him immediately. I explained that my frost-free, stand alone freezer stopped freezing, but was still cold. I had unplugged it and needed a repair. To my surprise and great delight Alex explained that sometimes freezers build up ice on the exterior which prevents proper operation. (Thinking back, I HAD noticed a puddle by the freezer after a couple hours of being unplugged.) He suggested I simply plug it back in and see if it works. Sure enough, it does! Now if this happen frequently, Alex explained, I should have the freezer checked out. Most repair persons would have come out to examine the unit and charged me $80 for the trouble. The first two times we had contacted him to schedule an appointment to repair our Bosch dishwasher, he was on the phone for quite awhile helping my husband by walking him through steps to determine if the drain was clogged. What can I tell you, I like being told the truth! And I have to agree with Mark H's review. So far, the work Alex has done (he's been out twice now in last eight months) has been okay. However, I won't hire him again. Here's why. . . We recently had new seals installed on our refrigerator/freezer (someone else installed them). Ice was forming in the freezer and Alex came to see if the seal was the problem. It turns out the door was not closing properly; there was a gap between the frame of the freezer and the door that was letting air seep into the freezer. Alex said it was due to the length of time (18 yrs) the doors had been hanging on this particular side of the box. He said the side of the refer the doors are mounted on weakens over time due to their weight and said that switching the doors to the other side would probably solve the problem. He said it would take an hour to do the job and said he wanted $120 to do it. Frankly, that seemed a little steep - there were no parts involved. But we wanted it fixed so we okayed an hour of labor. Well, it took him less than 25 minutes. I'm all for people making a fair return for their time, but that worked out to $288 per hour (that's five times what my wife, an RN for 30 years, makes per hour). It seems to have taken care of the problem; however, I feel cheated since the time to complete the job was obviously bid at a much higher level than it really took. In my opinion he should have adjusted his rate by 50%. read more

I think I made a big mistake using Alex Appliances! My usual appliance repair who is amazing, DJ Appliances couldn't come until Monday and since I am having guests this weekend, I wanted my dishwasher fixed. It would not drain. Alex Appliances came out and while I was busy working with a client, he determined that I had broken a glass that had broken the pump. He charged me $285 to replace it and I just finally had time to go online and research it and the part cost $85!!!! I will NEVER call them again! read more

Alex and his crew successfully installed my new (replacement) gas range yesterday. I was very impressed with their service and attention to detail. The installation was a bit complicated and involved cutting the granite countertops and adjusting the rough opening so it would fit the larger stove. They were a very harmonious crew, and they were ever so careful in protecting my home from dust from the drilling, putting everything back they way they found it, and to cleaning up afterwards. Alex is a nice person but I would not use Alex Appliances again to fix an appliance. My refrigerator broke. He charged me $180 to defrost and replace the thermostat. This did not fix the problem. The next day, I called him to have him come back and fix it correctly. He said it was the mother board. I called GE and they said it was NOT the motherboard. It was a fan that needed to be replaced. I ordered the fan, had it delivered and he replaced it the following day. He charged me an additional $80 for 15 minutes of work to replace the fan. Had I not taken the initiative to call the manufacture he would have charged me hundreds or more dollars to replace parts that didn't need to be replaced and service charges that weren't necessary. read more

Alex is the best Appliance repair person I have worked with. Is he warm? Not really. He does not need to be because he is great at his job , always willing to explain, and fair. I do not tend to post comments and when I do it is usually because of poor service. But Alex is an exception. read more

First, Alex is a pretty honest man. I am having problems with our washer which has known problems with its main control board. We thought it was the problem, and he ordered the new pricey part, but that was not the problem. He did not charge me, and it was my decision of how to proceed next since this was a unique problem. To troubleshoot the problem from here could get pricey. Some could question his knowledge and experience in this matter, but I do not at all. I think he knew what he was doing, but being honest with me is priceless. I would give him 5 stars but in the end, it was not fixed so 4 stars. read more

My experience with them is really bad. If I have a minus 5 rating I will give them. The guy who came to work was very un professional and rude. He gave false report to warranty company to scam more money and ultimately my claim got denied as the warranty company got confused. Gave different story to me and to the warranty company. I strongly believe they are incapable to repair anything and just make their money by inspection and writing wrong reports. read more

I called Alex to come fix my washer and while he was here I asked him if he could fix my Wolf range. I had purchased a new ignitor and asked him if he could put it in the stove. I did not know where he was located when I received his number and it turned out he came from an hour away. He should have that on the phone when I made my appt. He told me on the phone that he would use the visit cost toward whatever work he was doing, as most repair people do. He replaced a tiny spring in my washer and charged me $135. the washer worked for a couple of days and now has the same problem. To his defense he did say that might happen. After he worked on my stove and charged me an additional $205. in what took him less than 10 minutes to do, he proceeded to leave my home without giving me a receipt or deducting the cost of the visit. My stove now is in much worse condition than before he did anything. I called him and asked why I did not receive a receipt. He proceeded to send me a receipt that just had the price on it. He told me that he should have charged me much more and that he essentially did me a favor! Left me with two broken appliances and out $340. He talks constantly about how much he thinks he knows. I know he wants to come back to "fix" it but I would never have him in my home ever again. BTW my husband replaced the second ignitor is less time and with better results than this guy. Typical appliance repair ripoff. I had him out to repair the ice maker in our refrigerator. He said it needed a new ice maker and the part would be $280. I told him to forget it and found the same part on Amazon for $45. He didn't even diagnose the problem right. It took me 30 min to replace the part and still no ice. read more

Alex has been out to our home a couple of times. The first time he tried to fix the dishwasher, he tried hard to fix but he was very careless. He was hammering away at the dishwasher and bagged up my cabinet door. We have a brand new kitchen too. That was truly careless for a professional. He should of covered the cabinet with cardboard or something. After pointing it out to him he tried to deny it. Good thing he didn't charge me for the service call because I would of never used him again. The second time he came out was several months later for a problem with my washing machine. The washer wouldn't work because the door switch went out. I explained the problem over the phone and he said it might be the timer because the door switch hardly goes out. Sure enough it was the door switch and he replaced it in 5-10 minutes. He charged me $140 for his services. The part online was $15. That's a freakin lot of money for a 10 minute fix.
