This is like local version of Whole Food and a family owned grocery store close to my house. Things I love: *convenient-there are a lot of grocery stores near me but this one is located right near 1-10 and Highland (and Old Perkins). It makes it super easy to run in and grab something. (Especially ice cream late at night ) *It is always immaculate. Unlike other stores in the area, I have never seen this place messy. It always looks like they are about to do a photo shoot in the aisles, with perfectly stacked cans etc. *It is a paradise for people who choose to/have to eat with dietary restrictions. SO MANY OPTIONS for gluten free, dairy free, low carb, low sugar, vegan, organic etc. they have just about everything! *Amazing wine/liquor/beer selection. If they don't have it, they will work with you to order it from their distributor. Things I don't love: *tends to be slightly/moderately more expensive depending on what you're buying. I especially notice the price difference in the non specialty items (think name brand lunch meat, cheese etc) *I have yet to be impressed by the produce. Several Times I've gone and they didn't have/carry what I was looking for. Overall, great option for groceries. I found myself to be in the area and decided to stop by because someone highly recommended that I visit. They have a wide selection of healthy and unique snacks that I picked up and can't wait to try! There is a rather large cooked foods section, but it was the sushi selection that caught my eye. I picked up a chef special roll, which was salmon, tuna, avocado, and crabmeat wrapped in cucumber and omg it was insanely fresh and had the best flavor. I would even say it's better than some sushi I've had at some restaurants in my opinion. I was going to enjoy the sushi at their nice little cafe, but the encountered two different employees who gave me attitude for no reason so I just ate it after I left. Overall Alexander's has a great prepared foods, pre-made food, snacks, crafts beers, and sushi selection. I personally wouldn't come back because of the lack of customer service from 2/3 of employees I've encountered. This seems to be a recurring problem from reading other Yelper's reviews as well. On a cross country road trip and basically "so over" drive up and drive through, you know, eating out of a bag or a box. We pulled off the interstate and saw a grocery store so we were just planning to grab some fruit and drinks to get to the next stop. I was instantly impressed with the cleanliness and everything looked so organized and fresh so we started walking around...that's when we found the deli area- hello. The gals working there were super helpful and the sandwich was like homemade only better because I didn't have to do anything but relax in the seating area and enjoy! I ordered the andouille cornbread dressing for $29.99. The container measured about 12x9x2. They gave me 1/2 an inch of food. I called to complain and the lady {said she was the manager} that I spoke with said she would have to call me back. A few minutes later she called and said her boss would give me a 10% discount or I could go a pick up more dressing. The amount of food in the tray was not worth 10% and that's a 20 minute drive one way for me! I returned the container for a refund. read more

My review is for the bakery. My husband got me a chantilly cake for my 50th birthday. Since we find ourselves unable to have a big party we had to settle for another time...that bring said, my cake was the best part of my birthday. The cake was light and almondy. The berries were sweet and firm and the cream...mmmmmm, airy and just the right amount of sweet. Thank you very much. read more

This is one of my mom's favorite grocery stores so we stopped by after the doctor. When we pulled up I was excited to see they had a Big Squeezy inside . I had already planned to go by there today and didn't have to since they had their store inside Alexander's. They have all types of goodies in this grocery store that you can't usually find in other grocery stores. Like Vegan items, fresh sea bass, fresh lasagna noodles , and local products from the surrounding area. I bought some fresh salmon you couldn't beat the price of $8.99 lb. I also bought my hubby some hog head cheese for only $2.73. Then of course I got my $5.00 sweet greens from the Big Squeezy which was so delicious! I wish I would have bought more but I wasn't sure I would like it . They have a nice selection of everything ! I will be returning for some fresh sea bass! Did I mention they have gelato ?? I really like the Alexander's Steak Night with good choice meats. I also look forward to their prepared & packaged foods. Very easy to go home with prepared meal and not having to worry about washing dishes. I also like Alexander's fine selection of wine: Frank's Family Reserve Vineyard of Fine Wines, i.e. Carneros Chardonnay & Josh's Family Reserve selections of Fine Wine's. Many other fine wines, i.e. Petite Cochon Rouge. Excellent selections of ready to eat dessert, cookies, prepared cups of Parfait i.e. Chocolate & Caramel to name a few. I LOVE THIS STORE!!!! I try to shop local, as much as I can. This store satisfies this desire. They have everything the larger stores have plus great local foods, like alligator sausage. Great hot held homemade soups, chili and gumbo !!! And you can taste test them, before getting a pint or quart. And y'all they are all delicious!!! They have cold prepacked meals, great for picking up for lunch. I found my favorite Brazilian Rum there too! Now, some prices are high, but the freshness a quality more than make up for it. Stopped in for an early lunch after seeing the expanded lunch menu included a Grilled Veggie sandwich that was described on the menu as having grilled eggplant, squash, zucchini, tomato, onion and oven roasted red peppers with pesto aioli unfortunately what I received was a sandwich of left over stir fried veggies that were likely the frozen variety with no grilled eggplant no tomato no onion and no roasted red peppers and a ton of broccoli which I do not eat and shredded carrots which cemented my suspicions of the use of frozen stir fried veggies. The bread was good and nicely grilled and came with a side of either salsa or chips which confused me as I'm not sure what I do with salsa and no chips so I opted for the chips which were plain Zaps and fresh however hidden in my chips was a random piece of dried out ham ugh ! Staff was super nice as always but overall super disappointing lunch. read more

We love Alexander's! For us it's the perfect combination of convenience, value, and selection. Good wine department, high-quality meats and produce, friendly and knowledgeable staff, etc. Not only is it conveniently located, but they are very attentive to checkout line length, i.e. if there is any line at all they will bring in another clerk. This makes for easy in-and-out, which we appreciate. read more

Alexander's is actually a quite darling market with a nice selection. I do find that it doesn't always have the items that I want personally or need though. It's very near to where I live, I stop in there on occasion for that reason only. Convenience. Also, curiosity. They have been open for quite some time, and they do deliver which is convenient for some people. I don't ever have them deliver to me personally so I can't speak to that service at all. It's nice that they offer it. I can speak to the prices. They are HIGH. In fact, very high. It's the main reason that I don't shop there very often. I avoid it. A few times, I've stopped in to just pick up a few random items such as milk, cat food and such, and walked out paying nearly double what I've paid at anyplace else in the nearby vicinity. So sorry Alexander's that's why you don't get my business, or my upvote. read more

"Great breakfast cafe & lunch spot". A large-sized cafe with a breakfast/coffee bar, lunch options, baked goods and high-end grocery store. When cafes in the are area are packed with people, come here and you will not only have elbow room, but a nice, clean space to eat, work on your laptop, chat with friends, have a meeting - whatever it may be. During my first visit here, I was disappointed because my husband and I ordered a burger that not only took about 45 minutes to prepare, but came out raw that my husband had to ask for his money back. Both of us figured it was because they were new and had a some kinks to work out... it was probably their first time making a burger for a customer. All was great during my last visit. I was able to order a double shot espresso over ice without a problem... they knew exactly what to do with that order. After my coffee, I ordered some prepared foods to bring to a lunch meeting - fruit/cheese/chicken salad plate, strawberry/walnut/feta salad, side dishes and cookies. The grocery store seems pretty basic. My favorite part of it is the cafe and prepared foods section. If it was a bit bigger, it would resemble a Wegman's grocery store. I will be making frequent visits here. read more

We used to shop here a lot. The selection is varied, and I could always find what I needed. But we don't shop here any more. Why? A few reasons. 1. Prices. It's ridiculously overpriced compared to other nearby grocers. 2. Staff. They used to have awesome staff. Where'd they go? (There are still a couple good dudes in the meat Dept - one guy is super awesome and he's the reason I give 2-stars). 3. Freshness. Their produce is 1/2 rotten. They don't turn enough inventory and sell stuff that's nearly at the end of its life. We've seen deli-goods way past their sell-by date still in the displays. And dairy goods months past their expiry. This is not how you retain customers. They have a decent wine section and that's nice - but everything is at least a couple more $ than the stores down the street. I was such a fan when they opened, but they've lost us forever. read more

I like Alexander's because they're not to big. I like being able to go in and get what I need and get out. They have a nice bakery department, sushi, pizza and other in store cooked meals. They have fresh cooked breakfast including eggs Benedict they also have gelato and the Main Squeeze is in store so another WOW for me. They have a Enormous and fabulous wine selection and beer selection they also have a good liquor selection. Call me cheesy but I love CHEESE and lots of cheese choices also. The floral area is nice and not as cheap as Trader Joe's but it's nice they also have a nice seasonal gift area that I love to browse in and yes sometimes I buy gifts there. The candle section is wonderful and the produce and seafood area is also a favorite of mine. I also get a lot of meats to cook there. My granddaughter and I love the cooked lobster bisque they sell in the seafood section. The store is always super clean including the bathroom and restaurant area. They have outside seating but of course there is no wait staff inside or outside. read more

Wife and I just picked up 2 - 12oz T-bone steaks from Alexander's Steak Night on the Patio. They were grilled medium, nicely seasoned, and tender. Each steak came with 2 sides. Brought home and enjoyed. Will definitely do it again. read more

It's a bit expensive so I don't do my grocery shopping here but I come here for artisan cheeses, hot food, crawfish, fresh baked bread, celebration cakes etc. On fridays the sushi is $5 and it's amazing! They've partnered with Waitr for deliveries however they're not stating limits on essential items. The system is allowing the orders to be made but the rude owner is not fulfilling full orders. So please beware of making large purchase at a time like this. Alexander's and Waitr both dropped the ball with this situation. They should be ashamed of themselves. My father has a compromised immune system and my son is a diabetic and I wasn't able to get the items needed to keep them safe. Highly disappointed. If the system didn't state limits and my purchase was allowed to go through I should've been able to receive all my items. read more

Since moving back to BR from Dallas Fort Worth, I have been missing the great grocery stores there. I have an urge to drive back JUST for Central Market. To say my standards are high is an understatement. I come from a family of cooks, and as a daughter of a butcher I tend to be picky. To make matters even more complicated I am a Vegan. Now that I've given you my life story, here's my review. When i first noticed Alexander's driving down Highland I nearly flipped my car. Did my eyes deceive me? Is this really a REALLY large fancy grocery store that was not built in 1985 In BR? On my side of town? That does not require that I fight LSU traffic and curse in broken French just to get there? I am overjoyed to say the least. I hang a California U-E ( a U turn for those not in the know) and park the Saturn like a race car driver. I jump out and nearly sprint in the store.. I am literally that excited. My kids follow behind probably hoping I do not do anything crazy that will land them on a Therapist's couch years from now. ( too late) At first glance I am impressed. A little "natural foods" section with the obligatory Gluten Free, and coconut water does not live up to Whole Foods, but lets be honest, what does? The produce is so-so, and definitely has that homegrown market feel to it. Despite this, I feel it is VERY overpriced, and some of it seems to be not so fresh. I grab a few bags of produce to tide me over, and grab a few more things. The kids are delighted to find their fave beverage and I spring for it. ON the way out I grab some cheese for dinner and get to the check out. Three tiny bags of food is 65.00. I tell myself I am supporting a cool store and promise to go back and shop a bit more wisely. Two days later, I realize my veggies had the expiration dates torn off of them, and the Brussels sprouts are WAY past their prime. In addition, the cheese is full of blue mold, and my lettuce made me sick. Steer clear of this overpriced Status symbol on Highland. I'd honestly rather shop at Winn Dixie on Coursey even if I feel I should be rocking Mall bangs and neon when I step in the door.. read more

When other local stores sell out on several occasions Alexanders had still been in stock AND carry many local new & seasonal brands! *Sunday 11am BBQ plates are a MUST! Outdoors they grill ribs, BBQ chicken, pulled pork, burgers, sausage. And come with 2 sides (potato sides, baked beans, cole slaw). I would eat this EVERY Sunday if I could!!! On Thursdays they do $19 steak plate dinners which I will have to go back & check out (filet, t-bone, etc + 2 sides) *They have a BEAUTIFUL florist who will cater to your needs on any specific arrangement of your choosing *There café' is adorable. The country breakfast could feed a small army or just a really hungry belly. My favorite sandwich is the turkey brie with pepper jelly on ciabatta & my favorite soup is the shrimp and corn!!!! read more

This business has no concept of customer service. I don't live in Baton Rouge but spend about 40% of my time here. My family has decades of grocery business experience. The store itself has an interesting selection of foods one doesn't see in most chain stores; that's a positive. I've complained at least half a dozen times about the cashiers and the manager's have always said that my experience was unusual and they would correct the problem. They haven't done that yet. Once the groceries are bagged, even if no one else is in line, the cashiers will turn their back on you and lean against the bagging shelf with no acknowledgement or assistance in getting the bags into the cart. This seems to be a common element of Baton Rouge grocers but it goes to an extreme at Alexander's with a heavy flavor of passive aggressiveness. They either won't or can't fix it and they don't care. A business can't call itself high-end or upscale when they fail on such basic customer service. The failure to deliver groceries to the basket continued today with two additional issues: 1. We asked the person stocking produce where we could find tofu. The appropriate answers, in order of customer service, are: A. Let me show you. B. Over there (with directions). C. I don't know, but I'll help you find it. D. I don't know, but I'll find out. E. I don't know. You can see where this is going. The answer we got was, E. "I don't know." At which point the person turned their back and continued stocking veggies. 2. When passing through the service-deli area there's a pasta bar. It was clear that it had not been serviced in some time as the pasta or pasta salads, I couldn't tell which, looked as if they hadn't been turned or refreshed in days. Less than appetizing is the most polite description I can provide. read more

I'm officially obsessed. Can't believe how long it took me to get over here. Guess we can thank my son's baseball coach for having practice way out Airline! I agree that the prices are a little higher, but the milk was actually cheaper than any other place I shop (albertsons, trader joe's, bet r). Their gluten free section is amazing. Their cheese selection had some cheeses that I can't find other places. I found some unique ravioli combo's. I don't even really eat that but it sounded so interesting that I had to buy (beet, goat cheese, and butternut squash...). They have a full cafe. The menu looks awesome. Can't wait to try it out. They even offer breakfast. I tried one of their fresh salsas and that was enjoyable as well (mango pico). The employees were helpful but every one that I came across was super young. Whatever. Oh Alexander's... We live a few minutes away and now I will be working right around the corner and I anticipate my love affair with Alexander's to just continue to escalate... It's newer, very trendy, and they try to emphasize Louisiana culture and foods. They have an extensive gluten free section, good seafood and meats, GREAT wines and a pretty large selection of craft beers, a salad bar and hot bar, plus they make their own fudge, gelato, and made-to-order sandwiches. (they also carry Kombucha, which is great if you like that sort of thing!) They are a little on the expensive side for some of their special and high-end products, but really it's to be expected, as they are catering to the Country Club and Santa Maria clientele. I've never had a bad experience, and they have great pop-up market and art markets every once in awhile, and sometimes Food-Truck-Round-Ups. read more
