Chance visit on a Friday evening cause my favorite ice cream spot was closed. I was wary I would get the standard few flavors but one step in and the variety more than what I imagined. I ordered butter pecan cashew and salted caramel on a waffle cone and both the flavors were fresh, tasty and generous sizing. Just as always, I fell in love with my husband's flavor - orange pineapple. It was a beauty of summer with such summer like flavors I instantly wanted that too! Service was top notch. Alexander's is a charming 1950s-style ice cream shop/soda fountain located in the heart of downtown Noblesville. While I just came for dessert, I noticed that Alexander's also has a lunch and dinner menu with an extensive array of sandwiches, salads, soups, and burgers. With 36 flavors of ice cream to choose from, I had a hard time making a decision! I ultimately decided on the Buckeye Classic, which was vanilla/chocolate swirled ice cream with brownie bites and peanut butter cups. It was the perfect ice cream for someone who loves Reese's cups! I ordered a single dip, which was way more ice cream than I expected for just $3.50 (not that I'm complaining!) My homemade waffle cone was delicious and added an old-fashioned feel to the dessert. Alexander's has a soda fountain that would rival one at the 1950s sock hop, with several flavoring syrups and floats. My friend ordered a Vanilla Coke, which we can never seem to find at any other restaurant in this area. Alexander's also has Starbucks-esque coffee drinks, like pink drinks and green tea refreshers. I would love to come back and try one! Alexander's is like a Time Machine to a simpler era, and I'm starting to feel nostalgic just writing this review! We've been to Alexander's before and there's no denying their ice cream is the reason to go. They use Velvet brand and have 36 flavors & they rotate some seasonally. Tonight we decided to try the food. They have a lot of options & we narrowed our choices down to the Nachos Supreme, Kids hot dog meal, and 2 jumbo tenderloins with fries. After ordering, we were told the fryer went down so we couldn't do anything fried, so we changed the order to include a spinach salad and cheeseburger instead of the tenderloins. They weren't very busy when we went in, but got busy fast. Alexander's is a popular spot on the square and frequently has a long line for ice cream which is what happened tonight as well for most of the time we were there. The food took a while and when it came out, everything looked good but I have to say it was just ok. The nachos were heavy on tortilla chip but low on toppings and the sour cream was missing. Our kid loved the hot dog. He did like having cottage cheese as his side because he loves it. The burger was bland and extremely greasy - the bun disintegrated while trying to eat it. The spinach salad was low on spinach, but very heavy on toppings. We had to ask for dressing as none was on the salad or brought out with it. The one really good item we did have was the potato salad. It was great & we enjoyed it. After we ate, if we wanted ice cream (which we did) we couldn't order from the table - we had to wait in the LONG line to place our ice cream order. So we saddled up to the line to get our ice cream. The service from our waitress was great & she was super nice, but the delivery is pretty slow. Not her fault, that's just the way they are set up. Ice cream & treats are their specialty, not the food. Personal recommendation is to skip the food & just go for ice cream. Our bill was about $75 after food, ice cream & tip. Not bad for a good dinner, but not good for mediocre food. I'm not sure if we had got the tenderloins if our dining experience would have been better, but alas tonight was just ok. read more

I had this place recommended as a "must go to" place in Noblesville, so maybe I had my expectations a little too high. There is a bit of nostalgia upon walking into the shotgun style establishment; like walking into a soda shop from the past. On the left were the booths for seating. On the right was a bank of display cases for South Bend Chocolates, then the order counter, and finally, the cases of ice cream. What I didn't see was anyone working. There were people seated already, so I was puzzled. I waited a minute or two and since I don't usually just leave, I decided to follow the voices under the pretense of heading towards the restrooms which are across from the kitchen. I startled the lady working on the lunch order for a booth out front when I said hello. It was apparent that on a weekday, there was only one employee who had to cover both front and back. So, I headed back out front and waited until she finished serving the food to the other table and was ready. I kept it simple and got a scoop of Turtle Trails ice cream and dined in. The ice cream was good, but didn't taste like what I expected having had "turtle" ice cream elsewhere. Not bad, just different. Seems like a strange way to run a business having no way to see if customers arrive while working in the kitchen. Maybe a cutout in the wall or a bell that can be heard in the back would help. I looove this place! How in the world have I not reviewed it after all of the times I have been there? What better way to end a busy (hot summer) day than with a drive to beautiful downtown Noblesville for delicious ice cream at Alexander's on the Square? There IS no better way. Alexander's is located in the middle of the town square across from the Hamilton County Courthouse and in a strip with other restaurants and businesses. It is well marked with a round red and green sign on the building that one can see from down or across the street. The front doorway is small and has a little bump so those with mobility challenges just beware, but it is still big enough for anyone to enter with no problems. When you walk inside you will see tables down the middle of the room, the ice cream counter/soda fountain on the right and booths against the wall to your left. It is a somewhat small, old-fashioned parlor with tile (not shiny) floors and pictures and various displays, including glass sizes and cones, on the walls. Now for the food. They have a regular food menu as well as ice cream, although honestly, who goes to an ice cream parlor for anything but ice cream? But you should try their food at least once just to say you tried it. They have salads, wraps, sandwiches (including tenderloins and jumbo tenderloins--to die for), melts, soup, chili and delicious hotdogs and fries, just to name a few local favorites. These can be ordered from the menu while seated at a table. They also have soft drinks, flavored soft drinks, craft lemonade, milk, coffee, hot chocolate and wines/beers/craft beers. Then on to the best part--dessert! You can order one of their 36 flavors of ice cream in a cup or in a cone, or a shake/malt, smoothie, sundae, banana split or a variety of other sweet treats. They also have fine chocolates in a case toward the front of the ordering counter, from the South Bend Chocolate Co., which look delicious! The ice cream is so rich and creamy and there is something for every taste. If you like fruity flavors, try the strawberry, wild black cherry or raspberry fudge cordial. You will not be disappointed. If you like just plain sweet, get the chocolate, mint chocolate chip, peanut butter cup or cookies 'n' cream! They also have Superman and Blue Moon (cinnamon in almond flavored ice cream), a handful of sherbets and sorbets, and a number of other flavors. You really can't go wrong with any of them. The service has always been good when I have been there. Sometimes it is packed and of course takes longer, and sometimes there is hardly anyone waiting to order and we get our order right away. And sometimes we get helped and our orders come right away even when it is packed. All of the employees, mostly young people, have been friendly and helpful. I always look forward to visiting Noblesville and stopping in at this little gem in the middle of the town on a hot summer day! Oh, and if you live near Cicero (and even if you don't) they have a location there--Alexander's on the Water! This place has 16 hand dipped flavors, several soft-serve flavors, dessert packs including ice cream sandwiches, shakes/malts and a regular food menu similar to the one in Noblesville. I went into shock and told her to stop and didnt she have anything other than her fingers to pick up the candy, she said no. I told her, nevermind. How disgusting and stupid. This was definitely above average ice cream shop. It was cute and rustic. Parking was a bit difficult but it was worth it for the rustic flair. It did feel a bit disorganized inside. Evidently the flavors change out frequently though, so if you're unhappy with your experience, you can always go back for a new experience in a month. I happened upon this gem in 2007 when I first moved to Noblesville. Such a quaint charming lil shop that's nestled in the downtown area and not what you would expect to see but when I tell you they made me a happy camper doing things the old fashioned way. The waffle cones are to die for with the whopper insert to keep the ice cream contained. My favorite is the butter pecan cashew ice cream... omg, I can never get enough of it. They are on the tenderloin trail so it is a must try, large portions are to be expected. I couldn't finish my sandwhich but I devoured my wonderfully crispy fries. This parlor brought back so many childhood memories and I was just content sitting there peaking out of the huge window and on to the square.... Stop in sometime, you won't be sorry. read more

This place is really cute. Of course it helps that downtown Noblesville is so charming and what perfect way to enjoy walking up and down the square than to enjoy some ice cream. I imagine this particular ice cream place as a place where memories are made. Such a perfect place for a first date! It's casual and has people mingling in and out all the time. My husband and I came in on a week night and we each had a 2 dip and for the $1 more, had mine in a waffle cone bowl. The portion was large and the ice cream itself was really tasty. I've been to Alexanders many times before and I have never been disappointed! The atmosphere is home-y and welcoming, plus it is in a nice location. I will usually go with my family and the place has lots of seating so we can all sit together. The menu has lots of options and, from what I've had, they're very good. There are tons of ice cream flavors to choose from, but usually just get Cookie-dough. However when I do switch it up there is never a bad option! We were on the square doing a photo session and when finished we decided to come here for lunch. We love to try locally owned diner style places like this. This was a real letdown, however. Normally, these kinds of restaurants have great food and atmosphere. The decor and location was pretty cool, but for us, that's kind of where the "cool" stopped. I know some of the reviews on this place talked about bad service, but we didn't really have an issue there (aside from an overflowing milkshake brought out to us in a glass wadded in paper towels - not a huge deal). The kid was polite, though. What we did have an issue with was the food. It was just terrible. The fries were ok, but we didn't even finish. My husband got a chicken wrap but both sides fell apart and he had to just cut it and eat it like a salad. I got a cheeseburger that was so tough it was like ripping off a piece of beef jerky. I've never really experienced one like it before. Also, as a side note....the restroom is in their kitchen. You literally have to go into their kitchen where they are prepping food. It was super awkward when I went back there and it was occupied. I had to wait until someone came out and I just stood their awkwardly watching the food be made. I guess I can at least say that the kitchen seemed clean other than that? The door literally opens right next to their deep freezer. I don't know if that's a health code thing or not but it kind of seems like it would be. It was weird, at least. Anyway...long story, short....we were disappointed after being excited to try this place. Not a good experience at all. I would give one star except the place was really clean and the kid that served us was polite and was working alone aside from whoever was in the kitchen. Ice cream: yes. Food: hard pass. I would have given it 1 star but the ice cream saved it. I rarely stop eating my food bc it's bad but this burger was disgusting. It was so greasy the bottom bin was mush when they brought it out. It's a gross gray color. We are not ones to send food back because I figure they saw it when they (hopefully) finished cooking it. Plus, there didn't appear to be a manager in the facility. The tenderloin certainly didn't look like the picture. That said, if you are just coming here for ice cream, it's great. I got the buckeye AND elephant ear -since I had no dinner- it was a huge helping. Be aware - the kids' size is also Huge (see strawberry picture).
