Alex Royal Grill - Troy, MI This place has been popping up in my feed on Yelp and Google Maps for a while, and I finally decided to check it out--glad I did. Alex Royal Grill is located in a strip mall, but don't let that deter you. Sometimes those are the best hidden gems. Service was a little on the slow side even though it wasn't very busy, but honestly, I may have noticed it more because I walked in very hungry. That said, my waitress was absolutely delightful--super friendly and attentive, and she made the wait much more pleasant. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with a side of sausage patties and eggs. The portion size was solid and definitely filled me up. The gravy was delicious, the eggs cooked perfectly over medium, and the sausage patties were flavorful. They were just a touch more cooked than I personally prefer--but I can't really judge, as I tend to do the exact same thing when I make sausage at home. Overall, this experience was easily a strong 4.5 out of 5, and close enough to five stars that I'm comfortable giving it one. I'll definitely be coming back to try more of the menu. If you're in Troy and looking for a down‑to‑earth spot with good food and friendly service, this place is worth checking out. read more

What a pleasant place to go have breakfast. The first thing that hit me was how clean and fresh this place felt walking into it. I looked to my left and saw a young lady that was wiping down all of the blinds in the place, something you don't see too often. The food was plentiful and delicious, of course diner fare with lots of choices. My waitress was outstanding kind efficient kept my coffee full to the brim. read more

Table was a bit dirty. Smaller dining area than I had expected. Ordered a large Greek salad, grilled chicken pita, turkey Reuben with side turkey links. $45.87 The wait staff all work in concert together here and help each other out with orders and condiment drop-offs and the like. The Greek salad comes with Mosley iceberg lettuce. Looked rather anemic and lack luster of color. The tomatoes for the Greek and the chicken pita are not ripe. The turkey links are so-so, rather rubbery texture though. The deli turkey is thick cut, salty and the rye bread is soggy. The chicken pita meat is overcooked. The pita fell apart while my husband was eating, so he took the small pitas from my Greek salad to make mini pita sandwiches. Eating at places like this helps me to better appreciate better quality food at other spots. Glad we had a good brunch last weekend. Never knew this place existed until a few weeks ago, so when we were in the mood for a Sunday breakfast, it seemed like the perfect time to give it a try. We got there at around 9:30 and there weren't many people there yet, but it filled up pretty quickly after we got there. It's just one big open space with a diner feel - nothing fancy, but it works. The breakfast menu is gigantic - so many choices! I decided to go for the spinach and feta omelette. It had a ton of spinach in it! I was good, but not particularly flavorful. It also came with a huge hash brown. My wife had the bacon, egg and cheese wrap. It was definitely bigger than she expected, but she liked it. Glad we gave this place a try! read more

Cute, friendly diner! We were in Troy for a concert and visiting friends. This place is near big beaver road by Marriott. There's plenty of parking, it's in a plaza with other businesses. We came for breakfast on Saturday with no waiting. The staff was friendly and attentive. I ordered an omelette with ham, green peppers, onions (forgot the name ) but it was delicious and big portion. I loved the hash browns, cooked perfectly crisp on top! My husband ordered the special mushroom toast and he said it was amazing! My daughter kept eating more of his breakfast instead of her French toast, which was also good. It was clean and good lighting from the big windows. Below are some of the many things we like to order and enjoy if it helps anyone: The eggs benedict is excellent (fantastic Hollandaise sauce). The homemade cornbeef hash is superior to any other homemade one I've tried. The french toast and cinnamon french toast are very good. Pancakes are excellent. Lemon Rice Soup excellent. This is a small family type diner with just a few booths and many friendly faces. We were staying over at the Somerset Inn hotel and it's only about five minutes away from this restaurant on Livernois. I got the veggie omelette made with egg whites and had them switch the Swiss cheese to mozzarella cheese. My friend got the farmers omelette and said it was really delicious. Both omelettes were huge and were stuffed with many many ingredients. We both ended up taking a carry out box. The rye bread is really good and was also cooked just the way I like it (believe it or not many places can't make toast properly!) My hashbrowns were done perfectly but my friend said his were a little too crispy for him. All in all I would definitely go to this restaurant again and highly recommended for breakfast. read more

Watch your bill, these people lack integrity and will not charge you the same prices on the menu. When I noticed the change and asked why I was charged more, I was met with the overused excuse that the manager increased the prices today but hasn't updated the menu. Not only is this unethical and illegal but here's how it works...if you don't change your prices on your menu then you didn't have a price increase. This review is purely principal and I'm fed up with restaurants treating their customers this way. I would have never done that. They don't even put the price for each item on the handwritten bill, then take the menu from the table, hoping you won't notice the difference. Unless someone sits at their table like me who is a former restaurant owner in the area or a savvy numbers person. The woman who came to the table to give me this blatant lie excuse attempted to make me feel like I couldn't afford to pay the price increase when it's clearly obvious they can't afford to have an honest business and feel the need to subtly inflate your bill from the price you agreed to pay on the menu. Also, $1.00 for a side of sour cream? Really? Far better honest businesses to give your money to in the area. If you want an orange juice with your breakfast it'll cost you $4.00 at this very small family diner. I can see paying that for the atmosphere at a high quality brunch - but not here. read more

Both the food and service here were exceptional. In town visiting relatives and looked for a diner for breakfast. Alex's appeared to be a favorite so we decided ti give it a go. Wait staff was prompt, pleasant, and courteous. My partner had a veggie omelet and hash browns ( they called them 'American Fries') and I had corned beef hash with two eggs over medium. Everything was very well prepared: the American fries were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside; the corn beef hash was excellent (quite unlike any I had before); the over medium eggs were cooked perfectly; and the veggie omelette featured, fresh broccoli and mushrooms, and perfectly cooked eggs. You can usually find me here on Sunday mornings for my usual: Alex's famous club and chili fries! Yummm! I've tried just about everything on their menu and I have to admit, everything here is very very good! Lemon rice soup with a twist of lemon is one of my favorites as well. They get very busy on the weekends for breakfast and lunch so be warned! They also have weird closing times to keep that in mind as well :) I highly recommend this place if you're ever in the area! read more

A local staple! I absolutely love this place for breakfast, brunch and lunch. I've had most major items on the menu and everything comes out great. My only complaint is it isn't open 24/7! Our family of four needed a quick breakfast before going. I called and ordered 3 meals of special omelettes. They said 10 minutes! Very quick. I came to pick the order up and it was packed and ready. People can dine in as well with restrictions and capacity of half of people it used ti take. Each omelette came with hashbrown and chosen type of bread. Portions are standard but all the food is lacking flavour. Quick and fresh but i would put some spices or whatever other restaurants add to their breakfast for some flavour. read more

We are always looking for new breakfast places and this restaurant popped up as a recommendation, so I glanced at the pictures and was sold! We've probably driven by this strip mall hundreds of times but the only place that stuck out was the gym; the restaurant is tucked away in the corner. I can't say the same for when we left, people were starting to file in so a word of advice, get there early! We had glanced at the menu and were pretty certain what we were ordering but still took our time glancing over the extensive menu- breakfast and lunch/dinner before ordering. I ordered the Greek Skillet (Greek omelette in skillet form) and my bf ordered the farmers omelette. The food came out within 10 minutes and it looked amazing- tasted even better. My go-to when it comes to skillets is the Greek, so I've ordered it at numerous restaurants and all are a 2-3 out of a 5, none worth eating the whole thing or taking home since I NEVER eat leftovers . This Greek Skillet was way different. The American fries weren't overpowering. Normally restaurants add a ton of the potatoes to take up room on the dish, but this wasn't the case. The fries were sliced so thin, that I wasn't sure if it was a potato or onion, that also was great because i didn't fill up on potatoes. The eggs were fluffy and cooked perfectly, and the gyro mean was perfect bite sizes without being too big or skimped on. Not only did I take my leftovers home, but I also reheated and ate them later in the day . Sorry for no before pics, we were too hungry. I used to grab breakfast or get some take out from this place but not anymore. There for breakfast this morning and the men's room was disgusting. Feces and vomit all over the walls and a terrible smell. You could tell it had been there for at least a day. Never again. The owner was there too (I know him from his days in Southfield and then later Berkley) and he either didn't know it, which is inexcusable or ignored it, also inexusable. read more
