Alfies Inn has been a staple of quality and price for over 30 years but sadly it's not what it use to be. Waitress was great but the food was very disappointing. Alfie's burger was sub-par. Low grade of beef with things un-chewable in it. Bake potatoes were cold. Butter and sour cream old. Please bring back our Alfie's Inn that we all love. Hope it turns back around. read more

I've been eating here since they opened at this location. I've always given 5 stars, but they are slipping. Last night my wife and I were meeting our 2 sons for dinner. We arrived around 8:00 and were seated in the bar area. They were not busy, but our "server" was more concerned with restocking the bar than us or the few others eating in her section. We ordered no appetizers because she took forever to stop at our table. We all ordered Amigo Burgers with fries done medium. They came out rare but edible and still had the great Alfie's flavor. They were either low on fries or cut the portion to 1/3 of what it's always been. Mine were scattered on the plate as if they were trying to cover the class. We received no more visits or drink refills from our "server." I hope this isn't the new normal as the food and service there has always been top notch. read more

Get it straight. Alfies is place to go to eat. NOT to dine. Yes, it's basically a sh!thole with kitschy decor, sometimes cranky waitstaff, and suspect seafood. Quit whining-you dont come to a place like this for seafood. Burgers, Ribs, Grilled Chix sandwiches, Tater skins, and other fried stuff. It's Bar food, made to eat with a beer, and not cost a lot. Basically one step up from a McDonalds, and a step below a good Chicago Greek Coffee shop/Diner. They once had a branch out here in Oswego, and it was kinda like our clubhouse, for the wife and I. You could always count on solid American bar food, and the quality never changed. Is it Kuma's Corner? No, but it doesn't pretend to be, either. It's a Chicago-style bar pretending to be a restaurant. And that ain't a bad thing. The bastards closed the outpost and now the original in Glen Ellyn is the onliest one. I find it funny that this place thrives in the toney environs of Glen Ellyn, with Tony-er Wheaton lurking nearby. But that's the charm. It's a place to "go eat". No dress code, no hushed voices, no specials. It's a great bargain. Three stars, and don't take that as a negative thing. It's a casual joint, middle of the road. The food ain't gourmet, but it far from sucks-so in middle of the ratings it goes. Don't drive there just to visit the place-you'll prolly be disappointed. But if you're out in the WesternBurbs and come over all peckish, pass by the usual suspects, and enter this time slip that serves good workable food. A long-time favorite and we get carry out there (COVID era) about once a month. The hamburgers and cheeseburgers are great, but look elsewhere on the menu as well. The "Low Carb Alley" has two of my favorites: grilled pork chops and sauteed mushrooms and the Aussie chicken, a large grilled chicken breast adorned with Swiss and cheddar cheese, and bacon on a bed of romaine lettuce with a great ranch dressing. They also come with a cup of good chili. It is also the place where a group of my colleagues in a club I belong to eat dinner before our meetings, a group of about 12 people. No complaint, ever, from the wait staff about our requests for separate checks. The decor is pretty kitschy but in winter, when there's no pandemic, it's fun to sit next to the fireplace that opens to two rooms. We walked in on a busy Friday night with a group of seven, including three kiddos. There were a lot of people waiting but mostly smaller groups so we lucked out when first big table (and they have a lot of big tables) quickly became available. The waitress came right away for our drink order but there was a larger retirement party who's food came up just before us and so it took awhile for the drinks to come to the table before we even ordered our food. The staff was very helpful and apologetic of the wait. The food order came very quickly once we did get our order in. Our kids all got the chicken tenders, with fries, huge portions, their own kid cups with lids and free ice cream sandwiches. I ordered the mushroom Swiss burger, with broccolini and I got a half order of onion rings to share with my hubs. I ordered with grilled onions, tomato and lettuce but only got the onions which was a slight disappointment. My husband ordered the French dip. The other couple we were with got the fish and chips. They have local beer on tap which we appreciate but also old favorite and cocktails plus wine. All around we had a good experience. It was a bustling crowd but the tables were moving and people were being seated all while we were there. With kids we appreciate the quick service and if we didn't have an antsy 18 month old we may have stayed for another drink. Nice to find a another kid friendly spot close by. We live less than a mile from Alfie's, and we've heard good things about it. We bought a groupon deal for Alfie's, and decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, this place is a no-go for us. I ordered the chargrilled chicken breast with a baked potato, and it was unbelievably bland. It was also served on a slice of toast that was so soggy from the chicken that I could not eat it. The potato cake with butter and sour cream, which is pretty standard in most places. The Bloody Mary was so subpar that my wife asked for more Worcestershire and Tobasco sauce to put in herself. The place wasn't busy, but the service seemed to be lacking enthusiasm. Our server seemed tired, and gave us the impression that she would rather be anywhere but here. I can't blame her, though. I like 'em plain with lettuce, tomato, ketchup and raw onion, but I like them nearly as much - and my wife likes it better when I do - if I do the mushroom and Swiss burger without the onion. Yum. At the risk of sounding elitist, it is a very middle class restaurant: middle class décor, food for middle class tastes, middle class service (whatever middle class service is!) serving middle class patrons.This is the culinary equivalent of a bowling alley. But that does not mean that Alfie's isn't good. If you don't ask too much of Alfie's you won't be disappointed. Their famous hamburgers are famously good. I often get their butt steak which is good tasting and cheap and a very nice meal when paired with their baked potato. Their house salad dressing, which I had today, is really very good. This is a beer place, not a wine place. Alfie's is a little conscious of being déclassé. So, on every table next to the ketchup is a bottle of that highfalutin Gray Poupon mustard. This was my childhood favorite burger joint. Grew up eating here with my parents, returned during college with friends and today with my own family. Their loin burgers are made fresh daily. Went with the patty melt and upgraded to rings instead of fries. Burger was fresh, onions grilled nicely and the rye was the right texture for a burger. For an app, always liked their fried zucchini. It is served with a ranch sauce that has something different than your regular salad dressing. Used it for the rings afterwards. Im so sad! My dad and i used to go to Alfie's all the time way before they moved to their newest location. First off when we walked in the overwhelming stench of fish made us want to walk out. My daughter said it reminded her of the penguin exhibit at the Shedd. Anyway The Sir Alfie cheeseburger was always a favorite. Idk what they did to their hamburger meat but it was just awful. No flavor at all. They tasted like pre formed patties you can buy in bulk at the grocery store, just not seasoned in any way. I left half the burger on the plate. They supposedly have a gluten free menu, but it was very small and out of date, the food was average at best, my friends chicken dish was was below average. My pork was okay with my friends house dressing, undercooked by the bone, Plus I never heard of a place like this a sit down restuarant with no vinegar and oil choice for a salad, so the house dressing he was given, was bad and rancid. Since we sat outside, we were mostly ignored had to go in to ask for more water. The menu price was wrong, asked to see manager who was rude and disrespectful. Our price was corrected but when I went inside to use restroom, Manager was talking about US to the bartender. It would best they just state they are not a gluten friendly Restaurant, even the I-Hop in Addison is way better, Denny's in Carol Stream is not that far either and really do try to accommodate Gluten Free. So if you do not want to it would be best if you removed your supposed gluten friendly menu. I am so sorry I went here again, last time was 10 years ago, and my friends dish was totally messed up but complementary. Please just let people know so they can go somewhere else rather than get sick from Rancid dressing, I guess we were outside, so this was passed off as safe? I beg to differ. So we Visit Alfies every trip we take Back to Illinois we have moved away. First it was the same old Alfies Appearance wise which is great. The rest went downhill and from the looks of the customers inside or lack of It may explain the reveiw. Food was all cold except for appetizer. Service was Horrible, offered no drink refills. Some things never change and Alfies is one of them, inside and out. From the start wait-staff pleasant, Waiter was right there (to start then disappeared). The water we received taste like well water? on Roosevelt rd in Glen Ellyn? Did they get it from the snow pile in the parking lot? The orders GF-pork chop dinner- she barely ate half of it, dry and no flavor brought the rest home to the dog (I shouldn't be that mean to him). Apple sauce- that ain't apple sauce, fries- greasy. Also came with soup, chicken dumpling- watery, dumpling tasted like rusty fish. Me- garlic French dip- Beef dry, stringy, no flavor to old flavor, thought the au jus would help, Nope, watery au jus, Huh? Guess that's why the are well stocked with salt, pepper and ketchup. This is a great staple Glen Ellyn restaurant, where locals always seem to know someone, and the experience is consistent. My take is that the consistency relies on the regularity of customers to keep from sharpening their service and food. After a few meals here, some have been pretty good, but our last visit highlights the consistency which brings only three stars from me. The service is OK. Friendly, to be sure, but also fairly slow - even when the restaurant is maybe 1/2 full. Coming in for a business lunch, we were seated right away and even ordered when our server came by for drinks. Usually, this indicates an expectation of pace from a table. Our food, however, didn't come for a good 25+ minutes! The food is decent. Solid fare, but not really stellar, unless you consider that the quantity of fries with your meal is abundant! ;-) Our meals came out after our long wait, and everything had been sitting out for quite a while. I ordered the fried fish, and it was just warm. Typically, fried fish needs to be cooled a bit before you take a bite or else you'll find yourself with a burned tongue. Even the fries, down in the middle of the pile, were barely warm. To our server's credit (after she forgot to deliver the food), she replaced the fries right away. She shouldn't have had this opportunity if she only brought the food sooner. Decor is dated but nostalgic. The tables are clean, though everything is dark so I'm not sure how much that is hiding. This is the kind of place I used to come with my grandparents, and has some of that mystique. For a solid good meal, however, they have some stiff competition from some of the other pubs and restaurants in town! read more

My husband has been going to Alfie's for many years and said it has always had outstanding food, service and and exceptionally friendly clientele. When we married last year, he took me there and it was everything he said! I usually order their baked salmon because it is always perfect, but haven't had anything that is not very tasty ! It is now my favorite place to eat out too! We travel 45 minutes just to eat there about once a month. Halt! Dost thou possess an appetite fit for a king? Hast thou the courage and nobility to travel to the Ellyn of Glen? Then travel ye to "Sir" Alfie's Inn, and bask in the bounties of very family friendly-priced sandwiches, dinner baskets and Domaine DuPage from Two Brothers. Seriously, when in medieval suburbia, drink local. According to a local historian (aka, my mother), medieval-themed jaunts used to be all the rage back in the day. This one has remained since 1967, and it's easy to see why. Delicious sandwiches (I had the Down Under Chicken, with no-nonsense cheddar and bacon, on a kaiser bun), and cold beer would've won Sir Gawain's approval, along with the dark, secretive atmosphere. Seriously, there's a wooden sign on the front door that remains warning against cigar and pipe smoking, and still one in the dining room proudly designating the No Smoking section. Throwbacks aplenty with the large booths and the two cozy fireplaces indoors. As Fair Lady Rachel J. noted, not a lot of frilly service, but it is good all-around. I tried the length of our meal to manage a smile out of our server, but to little avail, A barrage of pleases and thank-yous finally made some headway. Next time, maybe I'll put some extra shine on my armor. There's swords and axes and stuff on the wall, interspersed with fading plastic American flags, because everyone knows America hit its peak in the middle ages....wait... The menu is burgers, sandwiches, ribs, and all manner of fried foods. I would say at least 90% of the menu costs less than $12, much of it less than $10. You would be hard-pressed to spend $30 on dinner for two. Including a drink. I did not have what you would consider a healthy dinner here. We shared onion rings and then I had my "seafood basket" -- four fried shrimp, two cod filets and fries. Brown, golden brown, and light brown. Oh, and a pickle. The husband had chicken fingers and fries. It's a lot of fries. Like, basket-o-fries + fish on top. Now, I hear the burgers are the way to go, so maybe next time. But nothing really overly impressed me this time. It was all competent and decent and fine, but no special flavor to the fries, nothing outstanding, just... fine. The food gets three stars. It's the service and price that knock this place up to a fourth one -- our waitress was friendly and very on top of things. And you get a lot of food for the price. No dessert though, none at all save coffee and hot chocolate, or a sweet alcoholic beverage. We wanted something small to knock our bill up high enough to use a coupon ... so hot chocolate it was. Love the burgers! The food is like what you would imagine Steak and Shake to be if you only saw their commercials and never actually ate the food. Alfie's is a Glen Ellyn staple. It's been there longer than I've been alive and you can't be bad and survive for this long as a restaurant. Excellent burgers and ribs, I highly recommend getting the ribs as an appetizer and then going with a round of burgers. The service is strange. They've never been unfriendly but I would never call them warm either. Also they all seem to be Eastern European?? However, my mother and stepfather went here one night and the waitress was tripped by some kid playing on the floor (GD parents) and she spilled BBQ sauce on my stepfather (just a few splatters). My parents were done with their meal already and they were wiping it off (accidents happen) but the waitress was horrified and got the manager right away. The manager comped their whole meal, which totally wasn't necessary. The restaurant itself hasn't changed a bit since the day it opened and I'm not sure if that's a negative or not. Boy do I have a long history w/ this place. A friend & first went here in the middle 80s and loved it! The bldg was in a different location than now but was dimly lit. Swords all over the place. A suit of armor was by the front door place had great character and still does today. Other than meeting women there back then, the great attraction was: first place back then that we we aware of, to carry dark beer. A nice option from Lite beer or bud or the like. Which went great w/ their Roast Beef sandwiches, Burgers and onion rings which are still enjoyed today. Stopped for lunch the other day and Id imagine the kids are probably running it now, Im sure the parents are retired or gone but still has good service. The BBQ sauce has remained tasty and fantastic & although I didn't see onion rings or peruse for dark beers, I had the roast beef sandwich. Still same beef & great recipe w/ lightly toasted buns. Dimly lit w/ a castle type interior. Still remains a good option for a burger or such. The menu has expanded from the old days and yes you can get a steak, ribs, fish n chips in here. Now, I've been eating at Alfie's on & off for decades (since I was pretty young). I will try not to be biased here. I really enjoy the medieval theme (the coats of armor are a nice touch). At times, it could seem a bit dark (lighting) for some but look at the Alfie's theme- it fits to the letter. Solid service all around & family owned. It's pretty straight forward eating. What's the sign of a good place to eat? See where the college students and staff go to eat. Look around and see how many families, kids/young adults and groups eat there. If you have at least 2 of the 5 groups I mentioned, you're safe. Alfie's has all of them and others I didn't list (such as a solo diner during lunch). I LOVE the Sir Alfie Cheeseburger with Swiss or cheddar depending on my mood & grilled onions. The appetizers (aka, the great for munching), pick the onion rings or the fried mushrooms ( the garlic dressing seals the deal). 99% of the time, this is what I get. Every now & then, I'll take a strip steak, t-bone or bone in pork chop. The prices are right all along and the value shows it. This is a VERY worthy place to visit for dinner, especially if you're in the Glen Ellyn/Wheaton area. This place has "welcome" written all over it. Rating: Beast!! read more

I'm amazed that none of the past reviews mentions Alfie's ribs! I suppose they are Alfie's best kept secret. My husband's family has been going for years, just to eat the tasty ribs. Alfie's is a family oriented restaurant. There were people (and children) of all ages. The place is pretty big inside, yet we still had a 30 minute wait because the place is so popular. Now, back to the ribs. The ribs were very meaty and extremely tender. The meat was falling off the bone as I pulled the ribs apart because it was so tender. I really enjoyed their BBQ sauce as well, it was a little sweet and smoky. I'd have to say that the ribs at Alfie's are just as good as the ribs at some of the well known BBQ joints in the city. Great burger. I grew up on these. But I miss the owner. His son runs the place now and is a jerk. Walks around with a scowl on his face never smiles and is simply not friendly. He seems like he's annoyed to even be there. The complete opposite of his dad. You can see what I mean on WGN's Check Please episode when they visited. My last visit however was a rare off night for them. I ordered a medium burger and got well done. It also appears that they only cooked it on one side and forgot to flip it. I have been coming here for years and I'm so disappointed in the take out service. After Covid hit and masks were mandatory, I walked in to pick up my order and the hostess was not wearing a mask. I asked if she had one, she said she did, but refused to put it on. I let it go. Recently I had curb side service and not only did the hostess get the order wrong, but argued with me on what I said on the phone. I always order the same thing and they know me there. I didn't have time to wait for the them to cook the new order, so they gave me a gift card because they said they couldn't refund my credit card. The manager was also rude. I know restaurants are really struggling right now, but when the hostess starts arguing with you, it's time to find a new restaurant. I'm sorry to say, I won't be back. I love the decor, because, as previously mentioned, it reminds me of being a kid and my grandpa. Which is cool. I love the food, because to this day, I still believe that Alfie's has the best burgers around. Seriously, the burgers rock my proverbial world. As do the fried mushrooms in garlic dipping sauce. Like obsessed to the point I'd say I've had over 1000 different ones! So I came here amped up with a small group of 5(odd number really). I told them all that I heard about the burgers and everyone was excited as well. Then comes the burgers.. They are the definition of "meh" like nothing good or great about 'em! The burgers are great and would have gotten at least 4 stars, but the decor alone brings the review down to a dwindling 3 stars (and that's being generous!). Like I said the burger was GREAT! Even my kids ate theirs! Which they almost never eat more than half a burger. Although I'd recommend getting food to go, so you don't have to sit in the nasty dining room. It's dark, old, and musty! Seriously, it was actually muggy in there. Did they flood recently? I'm seeing other reviewers describe the decor as medieval, but it's not like you might imagine. Thinking Medieval Times -ish? Well don't! Think dark wood paneling, dark red/maroon carpeting, super old fashioned tables and booths, just like grandpas old basement. But like I said, the food is good, the decor is secondary. The dining area is pretty casual and very 70's. On the left when you walk in is a bar where you can grab a drink or dine. The price of the entrees are reasonable. I had the pork chop, baked potato, cole slaw for just shy of ten bucks. Wings for app was good. Place was pretty busy for a Saturday night even around 7pm when we got there although there was no wait. Lots of options on the menu although if you are looking to eat real healthy this probably isn't the place. I used to come to Alfie's every time I visited the suburbs, because my uncle loves this place. So do I. It worked out perfectly. Unfortunately, my trips back to Chicagoland have dropped in frequency, so as too have my visits to Alfie's. This past weekend was the opportunity to get back, and I grabbed it. Glad to see nothing has changed at Alfie's over the years. N-O-T-H-I-N-G-G-G-G-G-G. You walk in and it's still clean but dark and somewhat...oddly decorated. Don't expect to actually see out of the windows or get much light in, as per the stained glass designs. The knights armor at the front door is interesting as well. There is also a fireplace which is actually nice on the chillier days. The service has always been fine here. It's efficient and gets the job done, but will never be incredibly memorable. The menu is fairly simple, heavy on the burgers of course, but does have a few other things. That being said, I have never, ever had anything but a burger here. My last burger was the mushroom swiss, medium rare, fries. It was out within 10-15 minutes at most, as is the norm. The burger was large and cooked perfectly - red inside, juicy as heck. The bun is standard. The fries are standard. But that burger...so moist and so flavorful. All of that for less than $8. read more
