I hate giving this review because we've been a long time customer of Alfonso's but over the last year and 1/2 things have changed dramatically. It seems as though they are going through staff more often. Used to be my wife's favorite place to get cheese enchiladas and shredded beef tacos. Huge location filled with family, and great flavors. Nestled off 4th street in Ceres is a hidden gem. This location is perfect for large parties, and even has a full bar. You are warmly greeted as you enter, and I was able to pick my seat. I found a nice one in the bar area, so I could watch the TV. House chips and super fresh salsa greet you soon after sitting. The flavors were fresh, and oh it had a great heat. I wanted to try a couple items, so the combination was the best route. I got the #3 I started with the crispy beef taco, it was well seasoned shredded beef, the lettuce and cheese were fresh and it paired lovely with the table salsa. Next was the chile relleno, the breading did not have a overpowering flavor, and chile was filled with cheddar cheese. There were also a fair amount of seeds, so there was a bit of heat. The excess cheese made for a great dip for my chips. Last was the green salsa cheese enchilada. I could of done with more cheese, but the green sauce was really good. The house rice was nice and went well with all the different flavors on the plate. The beans, sadly had absolutely no flavor, and ended up almost untouched. As many folks have mentioned already, Alfonso's has been a long-time favorite Mexican restaurant in Ceres, CA. My family and I have been dining here for decades - and have never, in over 50+ years, had a bad experience. The food is just as wonderful today as it was when I dined there as a child with my parents and grandparents. What's incredible, is the recipes have seemingly stayed the same all these years - assuming passed down to the next generation of owners of the restaurant. Service is always friendly and attentive. As you would expect, the restaurant is old, but they've kept it up and clean, The shredded beef is amazing here... portions will fill you up. They were out of the beer I wanted. They didn't have the meal I ordered. The small guacamole dip was $14 and tasted terrible, the chips were hard and bland. The salsa was watered down. WY over priced for what it is. The restaurant smelled like pine sol. And the main course, the enchilada was (no lie) as thick as two dimes stacked. Idk why but it's just not the same. Its always been delicious and the servers are nice but for the. Last year or so the food has gotten smaller. Or sometimes they'll be out of something altogether. This has happened a handful of times. They seem to go through cooks, so there will be variations in the food that have never been before. Ive had a really small lil Al's. special lunch. The chips and salsa are non descript and the rice and beans, well how can you mess up rice and beans. Service took forever (on a Wednesday night). I will say, the margarita was very good. Start off by saying we only tired this restaurant because we used our RAD card. There's only two restaurants in Ceres that this card can be used at. Supports local businesses during the pandemic. Family of four we got the fajita family meal $54 not to bad in price so we thought. Rice, beans, chips salsa, and the fajitas. There wasn't much meat given and definitely not enough for the price. But ok is what it is maybe a 3 stars because of the meat issue and rices wasn't really good. In their menu online a pitcher of margaritas is $25. So I added that too. Here's why I'm giving it 2 stars. With my RAD card they person who would scan wasn't there. Ok no biggy. Later on my account was charged more money then my total about $30 more. I called to see what happened. They went over the cost of my meal, proceeded to tell me the extra salsa was $3.25 ok cool, and the margarita pitcher was $35. Ok that's not what their website says. Still not clear why my total was $99. Manager still hasn't refunded the money nor called to explain the added cost. As of today even with me stating their website is false advertising they have not fixed it. I do not recommend just based off the food. Plus it doesn't help with their false advertisement. Still serving the same food from 1985, and not in a good way. Having gotten lost coming off the Whitmore exit I and my mother found ourselves at Alfonso's. Having eaten there decades ago when in the area, delighted we decided to stop and have lunch. This was an epic mistake. We ordered the Chili Colorado, this culinary abomination tasted like the bottom of a burnt pot. It was, fatty meat strewed in a sauce so ancient and reheated that it lacked all spice, The prevailing taste being bottled artificial smoke with just hints of old metal pan. The tortillas were microwaved in the buff, hence being simultaneously hard on as a rock and oddly moist. The beans were bland, the rice crunchy, and liberal application of salsa could cure neither. Wait staff was amazing and the only reason we paid for a meal that had only a few bites taken out of it. read more

I called in my order when starting to go through the North end of Modesto on our way to see family. It was a large order. 6 meals. The lady on the phone repeated everything and made sure I was getting what I wanted. Got to Alfonso's and had no problem parking. This is my first experience with them. They have a round about at the intersection they are located at. Not a single customer in house but they were super friendly to me and said it would be just another few minutes to box everything up. They gave us a huge bag of chips and a drink size thing of salsa too. All was put into a empty beer box and one even helped me to the car where my boyfriend and kids were waiting. She wanted to make sure the one meal on top didn't slide off on me. Got to our destination and started unboxing everything. It smelt delicious. Kids say the chicken quesadillas could've used a little more cheese. My ultimate nachos with the shredded beef was amazing. Grandparents enjoyed sharing the chicken and steak fajitas. I wanted a wet burrito with green chile verde sauce which is a very common request for a Mexican restaurant but apparently the cook at this restaurant didn't want to grant my request. Never in my life have I been thrown out of a restaurant at closing time. Arrived around 7:40pm and closing being 8:30. Around 8:30 they asked if we needed boxes and we said no we were still working on our food but I handed my credit card over to the older woman who wasn't our server to cash us out. A few min later she came over again telling us that they closed at 8:30. She came back at a few min later telling us she wanted to go home and be with her kids. She was so rude and was appalled that i was "raising me voice at her" for telling her how rude it is for her not to let us finish our meal and drinks (8:38). Im not sure what the worst part was, the food or the lack of good customer service. Her name was gabby or brandy? Older white woman who couldn't possibly be a manager. We had the Chile verde and chicken fajitas which was a complete joke! Who puts yellow cheese on beans you ask? A restaurant that uses canned beans. The rice was good and we picked at the food because we needed "food" in our system since we were going to continue drinking elsewhere. Having lived in the area for generations, my Grandparents started taking me here when I was around 5 years old. Every Friday night would start with "Shawna you want to go to dinner?" Do I? They were the one's who got me started off and addicted to the chef's salad and the new york steak dinner medium rare. As a child I would eat almost every single bite. Not much has changed. The taquitos are my go to meal when I'm unsure as its always fantastic. Alfonsos is unique in its flavor. They offer shredded beef... .and nothing beats a flavorful shredded beef taco. They are crispy and juicy all at the same time. The steak is always juicy and comes with too much food. I enjoy the ambiance of the bar as its a little more dimly lit, a little quieter as its a bar and it has 2 large tvs perfect for watching the game. Their blended strawberry daiquiri is yummy...although I get mine w/o alcohol most of the time because it's a delicious blended treat with my meal. The service is always prompt and the ladies are so friendly and always willing to help you. They really work hard as they can be pretty busy on a fri and sat evening. This is a down home, relaxing, family owned restaurant. If you are after a La Morenita flavor or El Rosal flavor, I recommend you go elsewhere as they taste completely different. Give it a try. I've read the reviews below and I suppose it's entirely possible that the food is not authentic, however the food looked and tasted real to me. Personally I'm more concerned that the food taste good, than the fact that an original recipe dating back six generations from Jalisco or Michoacán is followed word for word. The food here is good, I've tried several items on the menu. I have always been satisfied with the efficient and friendly service. In the 1970's, my grandparents used to own this building and it was called T.K.E Restaurant. I never got to meet them due to them passing before my birth, but my mom told me about them and their old business! We are from Sacramento, so we never come to the Modesto area, however, we were driving through on our way to Turlock. I immediately told my husband that we had to find this old building! I called my mom and she gave me the address! Upon arriving, we find that it has turned into Alfonso's and decided to try it out! The place is huge! For a Saturday evening (6:30pm), it was fairly slow, but picked up a little bit after we were seated! I told our waitress about my family history with the building and she let me explore and walk around! I'm not sure the name of our waitress, but she was SO kind and accommodating. Blonde, late 20's maybe early 30's! We were greeted with chips and salsa! The salsa is some of the best I've ever had. Very flavorful. I'm not big on super spicy, but it had a wonderful kick that I could tolerate. My husband swore that he could eat the whole bowl of it alone. For our meal, I ordered the 3 taco truck style carne Asada tacos. The meat was very delicious, however, I think I'll add cheese and sour cream next time. My husband ordered the crunchy shredded beef tacos! They were both really great! OMG, the shredded beef was to die for! So tasty. For 2 drinks and 2 meals, the total was $29.15! The combination order came with and chile rellenos oh, it was so disgusting it was completely hard it was battered the batter was completely hard, inside of it because I decided to cut open to see what the hell was inside of it needless to say it was a disgusting kind of brownish wilted Pepper with nothing inside. No cheese nothing. The sauce on it again disgusting some kind of orangish brown sauce. Needless to say we spent $30 and aren't eating. Started off having to share menus. Then when the food came we had to find our own silverware from other tables. We ordered a Shrimp Fajitas for two $29.95. There were only six shrimps for two people. The shrimp was very overcooked and chewy. Very skimpy on the beans and rice not even a serving for one. The vegetables consisted of mostly grilled onions and two pieces of undercooked green bell peppers. My son order a shrimp burrito $12.95, and asked for extra rice and less beans. It came with four shrimp and a small amount of rice inside a very small tortilla wrapped like an enchilada. All the food except for the chips and salsa was sub par. This is the first time we have walked away from a Mexican restaurant still hungry! Extremely overpriced. The worst food I've ever spent $50+ on.
