While waiting for the Greyhound to Port Angeles, I walked in and talked to the guy (Alfred?) and asked what was on the menu. Decided on something simple, burger and fries. He acknowledged and a waitress seated me and asked if I wanted anything to drink - water. Minutes go by. Half an hour. Nobody speaks to me. Then Alfred comes to my table and asked me to leave because I didn't order anything and was basically loitering. He didn't remember my order for a burger and fries and walked to the bank instead. I told him again and he still showed me the door. Firstly, the waitress never made another round to take my actual order after providing a menu. Secondly, Alfred should pay mind to what's going on in his store while it's open instead of doing errands. Thirdly, you did not make any attempt to fix your mistake. We were there 8 29 at around 10am. This was our son's choice for birthday meal. It has memories of eating here with his grampa. There were a few people there...not a full house. The food served was substandard. Husband had a burger hard as a hockey puck. My Cole slaw was sour tasting. Son's gravy was separating and looked horrible. We were told that there were only 2 people in the kitchen when we showed them the rock hard burger patty. I'm sorry but even a short handed staff can tell something is overcooked and inedible. The worst thing? Bartender who has long blonde hair walking around with her mask off her mouth and nose like she had a right to do so. Putting her customers and fellow staff at risk. Walking through the front door we found a bustling packed house of happy breakfast patrons. 1950's soda counter diner theme to the left, Classic full mirror backed bar to the right and cozy comfortable family seating in the back with booths and tables. We were greeted with menus and seated immediately in a cozy booth in back. Coffee and beverages were on the table in less than 3 minutes. Menu has just enough choices, for breakfast, lunch and dinner , not too many choices, that producing a high quality meal is clearly their goal here. Our server was friendly, incredibly menu knowledgeable and very attentive. Our meals were prepared in a completely acceptable amount of time. Coffee(I am a very particular coffee lover) is dark, rich, smooth and very pleasing. He ordered the Three meat Benedict with hash browns- whomever came up with this should be commended! Delicious pig, three ways, on a crisp English muffin, topped with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Hollandaise, IMO can be tough to get the right consistency and flavor, Alfred's chef this morning knocked it out of the park. She ordered the Monte Cristo with hash browns- this dish is A LOT of food! Thick, Texan toast style egg bread, triple stacked(like a breakfast club sandwich), French toast and layered with ham, turkey and American cheese, served with a side of cranberry jelly. This marvel of breakfast sandwiches is easily 4 1/2 inches thick, cut on a diagonal and standing up on crust end for service, it was impossible to suppress our surprise and amazement at the monument of deliciousness that it is. Alfred's is truly a gem and a must for any visit to Tacoma. read more

Alfreds is a quaint small place and it's very inviting and cute . The service was personable and the decorations were adorable . I ordered the meat lovers Benedict and it was sooo good . The eggs were perfectly poached and the plate had so much food . My dad ordered the bacon and egg plate and was still very impressed with how his egg was cooked . Food is extremely average and I can't imagine it ever being consistent as far as quality goes. This review has nothing to do with service or decor, strictly on the food. I suppose you test the quality of a breakfast joint by how their pancakes are cooked. Being sweet cream pancakes, they sounded delicious. When they came out they were burnt af. Cut a piece and took a bite, yup. Burnt. Sausage links were chosen, stone cold in the center. They were probably prepped night before and put in the fridge, this is fine. Problem is, gotta at least reheat them before serving. I understand what this place is now, not much quality here and obviously the majority of their products are either processed or manufactured. 2 is a bit harsh, 2.5 is what they deserve. read more

I am so overdue for writing a review about this place. This is our go to breakfast place, I have only had a lunch there once and it wasn't memorable. However the breakfasts are off the chart. We had the chicken fried steak with chorizo gravy and a Cuban sandwich. The steak was homemade and tender enough to be cut with a fork. The chorizo gravy was rich and super delicious. Our daughter loved the Cuban sandwich. It was her first and she said it was amazing. The place is quaint and the service was amazing. We wish we had time to try the burgers. American comfort food...and a lot of it. I never hesitate to stop in for breakfast, when I'm in the area or even nowhere in the vicinity. The breakfast menu is full of good skillets and scrambles. I like to dine in the bar area. The booths are nice, but the dark wood bar is immaculate. It really adds to the atmosphere. I have eat here alone. I have met friends here for drinks before Tacoma Dome concerts and events. The parking lot is a bit small, but there is plenty of street and garage parking. read more

We were thinking it might be crowded at 11a, but there were plenty of tables in the bar area and the restaurant tables in the back were even more plentiful. We sat at a bar table and ordered: Meat Lover's Benedict Chicken Fried Steak Our friend ordered his CFS with over-easy eggs, hubby ordered his with over-hard eggs and both hubby and I ordered our hashbrowns extra crispy. The hashbrowns arrived as ordered, but hubby's eggs were over-easy and my eggs (on a benedict, mind you) had soft, but not runny yolks. My benedict, otherwise, was very tasty. The bacon and sausage were great and there was PLENTY of food. Other than my eggs not being runny, it was a perfect entree. Hubby enjoyed his CFS, but would have been happier if his eggs has been over-hard as ordered. Our friend is a regular and his food arrived just as he had ordered, so he was a happy camper. Portions are plentiful and the prices are reasonable. Contrary to prior reviews, however, service was great! Perhaps the service was not as good in the restaurant area, but the bar area, even though somewhat busy, was certainly not lacking in attention from staff. I'd go back! read more

I've driven by this place for a long time and finally stopped in. First off, the place was pretty empty at 8am on Tuesday morning. The service was great and food came out really fast. Biscuits and half sausage gravy - half chorizo gravy. Chorizo gravy was awesome and a little spicy. Why aren't more places making chorizo gravy? The little things that keep people coming back. It's delicious! A lot of other interesting items on the menu. Guess I'll have to come back and explore. read more

I don't usually eat burgers...but when I do, I make sure they're Alfred's burgers. Top notch food and impeccable service, without being pushy. Great atmosphere and great music for all (not too loud). Very clean, very comfortable. Right when you walk into Alfred's you know that the owner/manager takes great pride in his/her business. I don't know how they do it, but they make you feel like you are right at home here. If you're passing through or if you are a local, you must stop by to experience the awesome food and fabulous service. This restaurant could be featured in Diners, Drive-ins and Dives but Alfred's is not a diner, drive-in or a dive. It's upscale food and great service without the high priced façade. I was waiting for the 3:05 train and decided on Alfreds for lunch & to kill a little time. When I walk into a food establishment, I expect to be greeted at the door if I have to wait to be seated. Instead, I had to walk halfway through the restaurant in hopes I would be seen. Why is it that servers can't figure out that you might want a table that's a little more private when there's plenty of seating available? Decor is weird and seems out of place with black lacquer chairs in the middle of a pub atmosphere. I need wood people! The food is mediocre at best. Nothing special about the omelet or the fried potatoes. I certainly wouldn't write home about it. I have to admit, the server was cute, friendly, and went out of her way to accommodate my request for a to-go menu for the folks at the train station. For that, a better tip. If she had immediately led me to the private table, would have been even better for her. I might be back next time I'm passing through. read more

The service was friendly but the food was mediocre and I was very disappointed that in such a presumably eco conscious state, our water came with straws.. even my HOT CHOCOLATE came with TWO straws which I have never had happen in all my life.. Consider this my post covid review of Alfred's These great people have hung in there through thick and thin. Everyday I would wonder which business closed due to the "shut downs" and parameters imposed on them due to covid. Alfred's remained steadfast through all of the challenges, never compromising the quality of their food or service! I was in there the other day and mask mandates have been lifted, (though you're welcome to wear one if you are inclined to do so) the place was packed! Always clean, even before covid, always welcoming and cheery! The food...always as close to homemade as one can get! Took a friend with me, although she's a long time Pierce County resident, she'd never been to Alfred's. She is in love! Her new go to eatery! These are the things I personally love at Alfred's: Blueberry Pancakes, Reuben Sandwich (omg, drooling as I write!) Their omelets ( I had their special..a crab omelet, made with real crab! Yum!) Their clam chowder, Cobb Salad, their Benedict's...ok, just about everything! Their coffee is hot and fresh and they pour a wicked Bloody Mary! We drive past this place often while avoiding the traffic on 16 but on weekends it's always packed so we don't stop. The other day was an off meal time so we decided to give it a try. Their parking lot is also the lot for a shooting range and we weren't sure where to park since there were signs saying gun range only. We parked and no one seemed to care Had a difficult time deciding whether or not to have breakfast or lunch and since it was mid afternoon decided on sandwiches. I had a BLTA and hubby had a Cuban. While both were decent sandwiches and came with a huge side of shoe string fries, there was nothing special about either one. I'm thinking that this place is better for breakfast than any other meal and we plan on going back to try that meal. read more

I like the typical eggs and bacon breakfast or I also really like the French toast. The food usually comes out fast. They also have really good drinks that are usually pretty strong. I love Alfred's. The bloody marys are strong, the servings large and the waitstaff friendly. My boyfriend likes the wide variety of sports that are always playing on the screens. I like the Monte Cristo on the menu, especially with their perfect (and I mean PERFECT) shoestring fries. Well, I guess I was rather snippy and sarcastic towards Alfred's Cafe. I was sort of trying too hard to be funny but not really informative. Let me say...I was WRONG. Pancakes are fabulous, entrees are big and very good/very filling. Yeah, sure, sometimes the place has some questionable patrons (very drunk, very loud and obnoxious), but the wait staff are really good about dealing with those types. I love the homey feel here and the coffee. It's very relaxing but sometimes extremely crowded. I'd advise calling them and finding out when they're busy. read more
