Brutus sandwich - added ham, pep, salami
    Zach T.

Is this place divy AF? 100%, absolutely. Is this the best sandwich I've ever had? Most likely, YES! Ordered the Brutus, added pep, ham, Salami. Totally worth the $4. This sucka is packed with meats. Delicious French roll toasted, and cut in half. You know it's a sandwich of love if it's cut in half. Side Caesar salad just Beautiful! Toasted croutons. Look and taste like they're in house. Toasted oregano. Lemon included. Creamy Caesar on the side! Last. The pickle spear. Boring plain pickle? NO! It's a zesty dill! Perfect. Here's the deal. Is it in a great location? Na braaa. It's not. The people that hang out outside the establishment are not in a good spot. The people that work there are rough around the edges. Typical PNW downtowners. Maybe that's why the food is so good. Everyone loves their last meal. I recommend and wish I had room for all of it. Still give a 5 star.

I want too bad. I was here several months ago and the sandwiches were delicious. Today was so disappointing. The hot pastrami had no taste, as did the red onions. Lots of bread and pickle taste, but I didn't order a pickle sandwich. And I sure didn't order the cheese on my sandwich. I was so sad. Great ambience and waitstaff were so friendly . Let's get back to great sandwiches. I hate leaving less than a five star review.

This is my favorite bar, I found it accidentally when I stopped for a sandwich and the bartender told me about the NA beers they carry. Since then I have been back a few times. The food is always good, the service is always pleasant. And it always passes the vibe check. Love it!

A dive with great craft beer and even better food? I'm in. Can't believe I haven't been here before. Had the 'men's room' by black raven that was super fresh and a Sando I can't recall but it was the most choice of cuts. They make their bread in house so you know they're doing it right. I'll be back...

Always a great experience here! I come here frequently for sandwiches and a couple rounds, but have yet to write a review.. so here goes! I think I've tried every sandwich on the menu and you can't go wrong with any of them! Soups of the day are always good, and I like how they serve Tim's chips instead of fried foo(fries, tots, etc). Adds a nice, local PNW, touch. There has been a turnover in staff recently, but everyone is still very nice, accommodating, and attentive to you and your table. And if you are wanting a clean, fun, but classic bar-style venue then this is the place for you! They have so many cool, nostalgic, vans vintage decor everywhere including Rainer through the decades and some abstract artwork (they even have a tv that ONLY plays old Rainier commercials! ). Definitely come here for a fun night out - plus it's close to several other things and just a short Link ride down to downtown!

Came here on the advice of a friend. We rolled in around 7 and decided on the Friday special of a Lobster Roll and Clam Chowder. Crab Roll was meh, okay--chowder was delicious. We stuck around for a few hours and had a few cocktails. A friend stopped in to hang out for a bit. The place was pretty busy with a change of crowds over the time we were there. Food and drinks were reasonably priced. Ambiance was pretty chill and diverse. Definitely want to come back and try more of the menu.

Had to go to the bar to get service and order which is ok. The drink menu was a QR code, which I appreciate but I also like physical menus. The food menu is minimum and didn't order anything. They don't have anything passed 7pm for food which is unfortunate. Also, it was supposed to be trivia night but I didn't see any games or why it wasn't happening. The ambience is definitely different. Quirky, fun, good instragramable place. Unfortunately, when we arrived although cozy there was a strange smell like burnt candle or burnt something. The candles they have are LED so ruled that out. This is my 2nd time. I would give better review but I am a little disappointed by their overall offerings.

At first glance it appears super tiny, but the bar goes back pretty far and is a good size. We got there before the nighttime crowds and managed to score the cozy couch in front of the fireplace in the back. It filled up quickly after that, though! The mood is moody and cozy, the perfect spot for making this apart of date night. I can't speak much to the food as we did not order any, but the menu is pretty elevated for a bar. I wouldn't say this place is divey at all, but the menu was still surprising. Service was good and they had a great selection of drinks. I got a hazy IPA (as per usual) and it was delicious! We also got a couple of shots here and absolutely adored the shot glasses they use. They look like tiny cocktail glasses! Overall we thought Holy Moly was a vibe and we will definitely include this in our 6th Ave rotation.

The food is my favorite part. I can have a beer anywhere, but the food is actually pretty on point minus the nachos, sad to say. Always overcooked, cheese is hardened and well beyond melted, but a massive portion in size. The sandwiches are amazing, the quesadillas are amazing, have yet to make it there before breakfast ends but I'm betting it's probably pretty good. Staff are friendly, efficient, and do well on checking to make sure you're not waiting too long for service without being too bothersome. It gets a little loud, busy and crowded on nights especially on the weekends, but that's typical bar atmosphere. There are several great tiki bars in Tacoma, with one (Devil's Reef) literally a block away from McMenamin's. But where Devil's Reef leans into the shipwreck aesthetic, Old Hangout reflects more of a tropical cabana. The water feature and fire pit are excellent touches, adding kinetic energy to the bar. Plenty of mood lighting, neon paint, and secluded little booths make this a fantastic date spot. Plus, being able to take your drinks and wander the rest of the building is a neat perk. Their drink presentation is delightful, and they offer more than just the standard tiki fare. After trying several different drinks, I've landed on the Mermaid Spit as my favorite. The sugar on the rim and bright blue color make it a fun treat. The Hawai'i Five-O burger is my favorite dish, with the appetizer sampler a close second. I'd pass on the Banh Mi sandwiches - they're bland, not filled well, and I actually chipped my tooth on one. Occasionally, the bar will flash and a thunderclap will echo through the room. I wish all the bars in McMenamin's were as intricately themed as Old Hangout because I'd spend a lot more time here. As it is, you'll still be spending plenty of money.
