My husband and I went to Alfred's on a Tuesday evening this past June while visiting HHI. One of the best meals I have ever had. I had the Parmesan Crusted Halibut. Excellent!!! My husband had the Veal. Also, excellent!!! Lemon drop martini was delicious and good size. Appetizers were also very good. Service was very good as well, waiter was attentive. The noise level was the only drawback as there were 2 large parties that were sat side by side. The restaurant is small inside. Since it was an anniversary dinner the noise was the only negative for the dinner. Overall, it was a very good experience, as the food was the best ever!!! Tonight, we decided to try out Alfred's... and we were thrilled with the whole experience. The food, ambiance, and service was impeccable! Thanks to Trent's recommendations we tried 2 of the specials; one of which was the veal chop and the potato crusted halibut. BOTH were exquisite and cooked perfectly. We also tried the German platter, and as someone with German family roots who has traveled to Germany throughout my life, I can confidently say everything was authentic and incredibly flavorful. Alfred's Roasted Maple Leaf Duck Natural jus, spätzle, red cabbage We have been fans of Alfred's since 2008, and Alfred's is distinct German dining, which delights us. My Grandmother was 50% German, and her father and mother were German immigrants prior to WWI. Thus my father assumed the family was German; however, the family which immigrated in 1640 to Virginia was English. Thus we have both German and English heritage. Tonight, it shall be Roast Duck, spatzle, and red cabbage. One of the grand things about an autumn visit to Hilton Head is very little need for dinner reservations almost anywhere.... However, it is Saturday evening, and Alfred's is a tiny property, and we do recommend dinner reservations. Alfred's is Not a hidden gem; however, it is to the rear of Sea Grass Grill and near Santa Fe restaurant. Given this restaurant trio, only Alfred's was full at 5:30 PM. Perhaps 80% of diners were locals. Alfred's merits a five star, Chef Alfred and Mauricio are busy preparing delight dinners for guests. Ambience is rather indifferent, and we have a habit of patio dining - there are decent outdoor views and patio heaters. Trent is our highly skilled server, and he provided us with special attention. Roast Duck; It is not chicken, goose, or turkey; it is roast duck, and we highly recommend this classic German dish. We pair it with a California Pinot Noir, and enjoy a delightful dinner. Just returned from Germany and Austria. We wanted to compare Alfred's to what we experienced. Verdict...absolutely spot on German fare with some wonderful additions. We ordered veal chop special...which had outstanding mushroom sauce and spatzle. Absolutely Delicious. Also ordered wiener schnitzel , very comparable to what we just had in Germany and Sauerbraten. There was nothing left on any plate! Go hungry ~ Service was seamless. Trent was our waiter. He knew the menu and gave excellent wine recommendations for the veal chop. We insist on going here every visit to Hilton Head. The food is delicious and classic; we had a very tender veal and bratwurst! Service was good and reservations are a must, even at 5:45, due to intimate size( eating at the bar gives you a ring size seat to the chefs!!) Absolutely excellent. What a gem! This restaurant is not like any other restaurant on HHI. It has a distinctly European feel to it and, although it can get loud at times, the food is stellar. My husband and I called in advance and ordered the Beef Wellington. It was flawless. For dessert we chose their delicious chocolate cake. The waiter, John, was also excellent. Overall we give it a +++++ and highly recommend it if you have not been. Their menu is pervasive and we can't wait to go back and try another dish. read more

First time dining here while in HHI for the week. Really great experience. Wife got the Halibut Provencale and I got the Filet Au Poivre. Both were some of the best entrees we have had anywhere. We love going to Alfred's. It's small and you really need a reservation. We have been coming here for quite awhile and have never had a bad meal or a bad experience. Tonight our server William took excellent care of us as did the chef. We've tried many items on them menu over the years. Tonight I had the 8oz filet mignon which is always the most tender juicy perfectly cooked and delicious steak I've ever had! The Veal Chop was a special and was incredible! As always the Sauerbraten was tender and delicious! Save room for dessert! Those are amazing too! They have about 12-15 tables inside depending on party size and have added some more tables for outside dining too. My one & only issue is if there is a group over 4 people in the room it can get very loud, but that being said we don't care because it's so good! **A must try(and plan on going back many times)! read more

Delicious food and fantastic service. Nary a drink ran dry. The staff took great care of us and our large work group, in spite of us being loud and somewhat annoying! (We took over pretty much the entire inside space for most of an evening's service. Sorry, locals!) Surprising to find a German menu in Hilton Head, but I was very happy with what I had and if you don't like German food, there's other things to enjoy, too. We were visiting friends in Bluffton, SC this week and only about 20 miles from Hilton Head Island. So many great restaurants there but we saved Saturday night for the best....Alfred's. And they did not disappoint. We started the evening off with whiskey sours and requested one of our favorite bottles of red wine....Daou Cabernet, with dinner. The drinks cleansed the palate and let us relax for a few minutes and enjoy the ambiance. This is a relatively small restaurant but there is indoor and outdoor dining. We ate inside this time but if the weather is good, an outside table is just fine! The bottle of Daou Cab was brought to our table and as always, it was full-bodied, smooth, and delicious. We ordered escargot for an appetizer. They were absolutely wonderful . The snails were well-cooked and the sauce demanded bread for sopping it up. Alfred's daily specials are hard to pass up for the entree. Last night, they had halibut, pork chop, and veal chop. We opted for the pork chop and the veal chop. The pork chop was an inch think, perfectly cooked and seasoned, served with spatzle and red cabbage. The veal chop was served with a mushroom and cream sauce along with spatzle and spinach. Wasn't sure we had room for dessert but we had to inquire what was available? The German chocolate cake seemed like a good choice and it was good! read more

We have gone to Alfred's many times. Haven't been in two years, same owner new chefs. The service was good but the food was barely mediocre. The onion soup had about an eighth of a cup broth, no bread and probably one whole onion in it ( horrible in taste and extremely salty). My husband ordered sea bass, barely edible and very very bland. I ordered weinerschnitzel ( also very very bland). I asked for gravy, which amounted to one large tablespoon and they charged me $3.00( ridiculous). New chefs NOT GOING BACK!!! What a hidden gem in Hilton Head! Literally - Alfred's is tucked behind Sea Grass Grille, so it's hard to miss if you're not looking for it - but I definitely urge you to find it! All of the Yelp/Reddit/Facebook reviews we read which rave about Alfred's did not disappoint! We dined here on a Monday night, so took advantage of the made-to-order Pierogis. We liked the potato/onion pierogis over the cheese/potato one, but both were served hot and fresh of the skillet! For entrees, we had the Sauerbraten (short rib and cabbage), Pan Seared Rainbow Trout, and the Potato Crusted Halibut with Crab meat. Portion were generous so we took home leftovers which were finished the next day! I do have to say that the lemon beurre blanc sauce over the mashed potatoes was amazing! Overall 4.5 stars; not quite a 5 because our appetizer order was messed up twice, and the open kitchen made the dining room a bit smokey on the evening we were there. read more

Visited 10/06/2022 After reading all the amazing reviews we had to try Alfred's during out trip down here to HH. Since Alfred's was celebrating Octoberfest, their Schweinhaxen was a special and something both my wife and I had to try. Oh, but before we ordered the schweinhaxen, I ordered a cup of goulash. This was an excellent cup of beef... which also could be ordered as an entree with spätzli. Now the schweinhaxen... was a bit disappointing... not terrible, but not what we expected. We've had it before (in Germany one time) where the skin was REALLY crispy and the meat tender and juicy. We both felt the whole knuckle was a bit overdone and dry. The red cabbage and spätzli that accompanied the meat was very good and made the meal enjoyable. Service was excellent... as were the excellent Octoberfest beers we had. read more

This place was tough to get into! I like to go eat by myself and I tried coming on a Thursday night, they had to turn me away because they couldn't accommodate. I made sure I made a reservation for next time because this place was high on my list. It did not disappoint! I got the German mix platter because I wanted to try a little bit of (mostly) everything, and it was perfect. It came with bratwurst, sauerbraten and sauce, and Wiener schnitzel. All three were amazing, but if I had to pick a favorite I think it's the sauerbraten. It also came with sauerkraut, onions, and mashed potatoes. They let me substitute the mashed potatoes for spaetzle. All three accompaniments were delicious. The spaetzle was a little different than what I'm used to, shape and texture-wise, but I still enjoyed it. There is indoor and outdoor seating, and the atmosphere is a little more formal than I was prepared for, tbh. But overall great experience, and I would highly recommend. read more

We have some friends that come to HHI more frequently than we do, so I always ask them where they like to eat. They brought up Alfred's without any knowledge that we love German food. I made a reservation on Open Table. Small space, located in the same complex as Santa Fe. Indoor and outdoor tables. Owned and operated it seems by Aussies and Kiwis! Don't let their nationality fool you, they have this German food down to a fine art. My husband has been to Germany many times, and we seek out German restaurants when we travel. My husband said of his meal, " This is the best German food I've ever had." Personally I cannot disagree. 1.The German sample platter was exceptional, and I overheard the table next to us say the same thing- so there you go, a two for one recommendation. It comes with the Bratwurst, Wienerschnitzel, sauerkraut, spatzle. 2. My veal chop was mind blowing good- the mushrooms and sauce and spatzle made it extra special. I'd say the spatzle is the best I've ever tasted, in fact I'd kind of gotten to where I avoid it here in the US, most places just don't get it right. I'd have really liked to have licked my plate and chewed all the tender meat off the bone, but I was wearing a pretty new dress and I was in public. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I was able to get a glass of Gruner Veltliner, an Austrian varietal that isn't super common on the average US wine list. We skipped dessert, but the table on the other side of us had a slice of the Black Forest cake, and it certainly looked beautiful. This place is an anachronism - what would have been called a continental restaurant when I was younger. They serve French and German food and do both well. The dining room is intimate, with white-tablecloth tables, and a small working kitchen in the rear where you can see and hear your hot dishes prepared. Fire rolls hypnotically along the ceiling of the wall-mounted salamander. Service is efficient and gracious. Two small rolls are delivered to our table for two, with butter, even as we were perusing the menu. They are everything a baguette should be, only smaller - crunchy on the outside with a chewy crumb, and a classic bread flavor. I couldn't resist the potato pancakes, which were even better than most I've had, due to the addition of leek to the batter. They add a nice onion flavor to the already-delicious pancakes. They are served with a little sour cream and apple sauce. I ordered the pan-seared rainbow trout, served with lemon beurre blanc, mashed potatoes (which I exchanged for spaetzle) and zucchini ribbons. This came with two large trout fillets, perfectly cooked, and complemented deliciously by the lemon beurre blanc. The combination melted in my mouth. The spaetzle had a great texture, and a nice buttery flavor. The zucchini ribbons were nothing more than fairly thin, long slices of zucchini. This was one of the best examples of this dish I have had anywhere, and I was grateful for the generous portion of trout. My wife got the sauerbraten, served with red cabbage and spaetzle. This was a large piece of short rib (no bone), braised slowly until very tender, with the typical sweet and sour sauce. Each bite was unctuous and full of flavor. The red cabbage was also cooked down with the typical sweet and sour preparation. She enjoyed it very much. On a subsequent visit, I got the wienerschnitzel. It was a large portion of perfectly breaded, perfectly fried veal, served with spaetzle, and vegetables (carrots and green beans). The veal was not pounded paper thin, which made each bite a bit chewier than I had expected, but also a better meat to breading ratio. It is topped with a lemon slice, and two anchovies artfully rolled into a circle around some capers. You may add gravy, or a fried egg (called "Holstein" on the menu because this was the way Friedrich von Holstein, a famous historical figure, liked it). I found it a bit boring after a while, but I think that was my fault. Most of the dishes on the menu looked great, and what I could see being delivered to other tables looked fantastic too. It will require more visits to try everything that looked tempting. I'm willing to put in the work. read more
