I learned about A.S.S. about a year ago, and my wife & I order takeout about twice each month. I love the Al Capone & the warm Smokestack while my wife enjoys the Monterey Chicken, but we ask that they remove certain ingredients each time we order. I think we've had about 8 incorrect orders in the year that we've ordered from this place. Four times (including today), the wrong sandwich was made. I ordered the #4 (smokestack), and the #4 was written on the wrapper, but apparently I was given a #14, which is gross. Within the year, they made a #8 instead of a #18 and a #10 instead of a #18. Those were for my wife, and she's allergic to peppers/chili powder, so I had to make the 15 minute trek back to receive my correct order. The owner made it seem like it was my mistake since he showed me that a #10 was written and not a #18. A "Jimmy the Greek" sandwich would never be ordered in my house. Other times, my wife's Monterey Chicken sandwich would not come the way she ordered it, & we would sometimes not be given cheese sauce when it was ordered. The sandwiches, when made correctly, are very good, but I hate wondering if my order was done correctly. I should not have to unpack the bag & individually check each sandwich before leaving the gross brown hut. Maybe I won't go as often any more. The place needs a makeover. read more

I was very exicted to try this place, but it was not nearly as great as people have made it out to be. The major issue with this place is that it's EXTREMEMLY OVERPRICED!! I went there on a Saturday afternoon with my grandpa and we got 2 subs and 2 drinks and it was about $22 bucks! Way too much money..that's just insane!! Any sub over $6 bucks is pushing it. Even Potbelly has cheaper sandwiches and it's much better. Furthermore the sandwich wasn't as wonderful as people make it out to be, it wasn't horrible either but not much of a step above a Subway. Maybe because I grew up near the northside of the city I am used to better places. To be honest you can find an amazing sub in a Italian grocery store over there which is bigger and way better for a fraction of the price. The people working in here were nice, but I probably will not be returning. If you are going to charge over $8 for a sub it better be pretty freaking awesome, and that it definitely wasn't. read more

Let me start off by saying this: I go week to week CRAVING ASS subs!! If you are new to this sub shop, trying to find it may be a little rough.. so keep your eyes open! It is definetly a diamond in the rough shack. Literally a shack. But, it has a home feeling. It is a place where the locals go. Walk in and there are a couple tables, picutres/awards along the walls and a huge menu of all there tasty items. (note that the place doesnt have heat, so in the winter, bring your jacket and keep it on!) My goal is to get through ever sandwich. But right now, I'm on the completely and utterly stuck on the European Club. Oh M GEE!!!! so flippin good. Can't say enough good things about this place. Take a hike JJ's and Subway.... I pretty much could just live here based on how amazing these sandwiches are. Just to prepare you they are HUGE. So you might want to split it or get half to go. My personal favorite is their "Here's the Beef" sandwich. I mean it has horseradish sauce ya'll. Come on. Personal win. The only ONLY thing negative is that the interior is cramped. I'm pretty sure this place is awesome, but I did not like my first experience. I didn't know it was possible to screw up an Italian sub. There #1 sandwich, the Al Capone, was not what I was expecting. It was a hot sandwich. I was expecting a cool, crisp italian sub, with lots of shredded lettuce, thinly sliced white onion, vinaigrette, etc. You know, an Italian sub. I think the meat and cheese was heated up. The meat was also sliced too thick. The deli meat on an italian sub should be really thin. And their fresh squeezed lemonade tasted like Minute Maid. I would not recommend anyone to go here because sandwiches come with more than labeled on the menu, and not the good stuff. Customer service was also really AWFUL. Stopped in to grab a sub and a drink before going to trivia night with my sister-in-law. The place only had two other customers in there, but it was a Thursday at around 5:45 pm. I ordered the Al Capone, and it was made to order while I waited. This was no big deal because I would rather have that than a pre-made sandwich handed to me. What a nice little gem, found this place just by doing a drive by. I saw it and turned around like that looks like a place that night be a little known local secret. I was totally right not reading one review before trying and the food is great. The selection of the menu should be able to support any type of persons palate. I remember going in here a lot way back a couple of years ago and I really enjoyed their good sandwiches. It's been a long time since I last visited the place, and for the very first time in years, I was able to visit it. I really wanted to order it online for pickup, but decided to go to the place and get it inside instead for a much better experience. I was expecting a good experience from the restaurant since I really liked them back then, but right after I went inside, I saw that it was not really that clean. It does not look like a mess, but it is not really clean. I couldn't say it's filthy because that would be too harsh, but it's safe to say it's not well-kept because tables with leftovers from customers who had been gone for a couple of minutes were still there while I sat in my seat waiting. My order also took longer than I expected, even though it was just a simple order of a sandwich and fries. The wait is really long, but what's good about it is that the food is delicious and definitely satisfying. It is well-priced too. I just hope they clean the place well and improve their service, and then it will definitely be one of the best sub shops in Algonquin. read more

Yes, these sandwiches are about $7 each, but they are probably the best subs I've ever had. There are around 3-4 vegetarian options out of their menu of over 20 subs, and I wish there were a few more, but the few they have are fantastic. They've got some coupons out there that allow you to get a free sub when you buy two others, which is useful. The building's not much to look at and is easy to overlook when driving by, but the quality more than makes up for it all, especially because you're probably going to take your order to go anyway. read more

There was nothing remotely "special" about the sandwich. Parking is limited & idiots park every direction in few spaces available. Street parking is also available. I made a mental note to use that next time, but I probably won't stop again. The food was just so 'meh' for the price. And it's dirty. Definitely a hole-in-the wall kind of place (when the weather is nice I prefer to sit outside because it's nicer); although it could use a cosmetic face lift, it is clean. Each time I have come here the employees have been very friendly and hustling to provide good service. Everything is cooked to order so yes, it does take longer to get your sandwich than Subway! If you're in a hurry you can call ahead. As others have said it is slightly more expensive than most places for a sandwich ($8.45) but they use quality ingredients and I think you get a decent amount of food. All the sandwiches I have tried have been good to great and they have some unique sandwiches; personal recommendations would be the Al Capone, Jimmy the Greek, and the Waldorf. Do not pass this place up! You think you know and love your awesome corporate sub shop.....Nope, you have been swindled or your taste buds aren't quite there. The bread they use is amazing and always fresh. I have tried almost every sub but my favorite remains Jimmy the Greek. I have recently been on a low carb diet, had my favorite sandwich turned into a salad....so filling and that's coming from someone that loves their bread. All of their soups are phenomenal. I usually have to adjust seasonings (salt/pepper) with other soups..I don't have to do that with A.S.S.!!! I've never had a better tomato bisque (sorry, mom!) It's always fresh! That's guaranteed. This is THE BEST mom and pop subshop ever. They have tons of options for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. The food is always fresh and delicious. Yes, you may have to wait a bit longer for these sandwiches made with love... as well as awesomely seasoned fries. I do not get this place; the sandwiches were alright, but highly overpriced, the fries were good, but not shoestring, learn the difference, and the potato salad was average, on a good day. So, what's the big deal here? I love to patronize local shops but I just don't get this one, the ingredients aren't special, the taste is not special, the atmosphere is very special in a "tractors and banjos" kind of way and the building this sub shop is in is very rundown. I really don't care about the building and its condition but I do not see this place as the gem everyone makes it out to be, it is not a "diamond in the rough", it is still coal, dammit. This is an amazing restaurant! Such good sandwiches. I am vegetarian and the veggie sub is to die for, I get it every time and it's delicious. Their food is very filling, but always make room for their French fries. They are the perfect amount of seasoned goodness and always are fresh, so they are nice and warm.
