Got the vegetarian sub that had the goat cheese (don't remember the name -#23?) -AMAZING!

Subs are seriously some of the best subs around. The Al Capone is to die for, highly recommended.

i wish i lived closer so i could come here every day - omg, the sandwiches are de-LISH!! i went to visit my sister for lunch and she suggested i pick up from Algonquin Sub Shop. i got the #3 Here's the Beef; she got #18 the Monterey Chicken; both of us opted for Lays chips. I don't care for warm veggies so i skipped the lettuce & tomato, and it was fantastic! loads of meat with a tasty horse radish sauce & melted provolone (ooh, my mouth just watered thinking about it!) the bread was perfection - crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside...all of which i appreciated because i have a lot of dental work so i don't like super-chewy bread. (apologies for the over-share!) my sister didn't need to tell me how super fantastic her sandwich was - it was evident because she was barely talking. if you knew my sister, you would know how telling that is - i say this with love, but she's a blabbermouth! both of us were getting full halfway through, but the food was so good we kept going until the last morsels were gone. i would be remiss if i didn't mention how friendly, attentive, and helpful the staff was. i also appreciated that the place was spotless even during the busy lunch hour - that included the bathroom! you can bet i will be looking forward to my next trip to algonquin! read more

I bought a couple of sub sandwiches from the Sub Shop. I thought food was good but pricey.

We got there today right at 11 when they opened. They are not allowing customers inside the business at this time. An employee came to the door and took our order. We had 2 sub sandwiches and said we would eat them on the outdoor patio. We got to the patio and all of the tables had bird poop and other dirt on them, none had been wiped down. We grabbed a wipe from the car and wiped down our own table (but had nowhere to throw it away because their garbage can was laying upside down with no bag in it). We waited for 40 minutes at the tables (we both ordered hot subs and saw cars coming and going and thought maybe it takes them a while to make the hot subs fresh right at open). We finally asked and they said the order never came through to the kitchen. We asked for a refund on the sandwiches and drove down the street to Jersey Mikes who had our sandwiches ready in 5 minutes. I was a first time customer and all they said was sorry we will refund you (didnt offer to quickly make us sandwiches, or offer anything for us to come back in the future). Nice staff, I order a full sub which was $10. When I got it,I thought they made a mistake and gave me a half. I looked up on yelp half and full subs. Evidently they did give me the full. The sub wasn't even that great. Way overpriced for mediocre sub. Will never go back. read more

OMG!!! I am so lucky to live only a mile away from this wonderful little one of a kind restaurant! I have not met one of their subs I didn't love and they are ALWAYS willing to make it your way (and I have never had additional charges because of it) Try the Jimmy the Greek or the Southwest Chicken... well try anything you will not be sorry! read more

The best sandwiches in the NW burbs. They have several soups daily and these are fantastic. The Monterey Chicken sub is my favorite, but you really can't go wrong with any sub on the menu. The service is okay. They could be a bit friendlier, but I don't go here for service. The building is old and a little dirty looking, but the food is heavenly. I had driven past this place for years but never stopped in. I recently saw this shop on an edition of Chicago's Best on TV. My wife and I took our son fishing by the bridge in downtown Algonquin, so that presented a perfect opportunity to try the subs here. We were there on a Saturday around noon, so the line was pretty long. Although we were the third customer in line, it took about 20 minutes until we were up at the counter to place our order. That was actually OK because it gave us a good chance to read the menu and decide. There were quite a few different subs, and it was quite a decision to make. Pretty much all of the subs are upscale ideas; definately not your run-of-the-mill sandwiches. I had a Southwestern Chicken sub, my wife had the Beefy sub (not the Philly) and my boy had the Al Capone (atta' boy!); we all had our own drinks but we shared an order of fries. We had gotten the order to go since it was standing room only when we arrived, but it cleared out enough by the time we finished ordering to be able to sit and wait for the food. Good thing too, because it took another 25 minutes to get the food, and at least we could sit down. Even though we found seats, we decided to take it all back to the river for some lunchtime scenery. In all fairness it was packed before as I said, and there was only 1 cook actually making the subs, so it understandably took a long time to get our food. I'm sure the service would be faster on a different day or different time, but that's just my luck. The food, however, made up for the wait. My sandwich was tender and juicy, the southwestern flavor was ample yet not overpowering. It wasn't actually hot (spicy) but was full of flavor. My wife's Beefy sub was good, but not anything really special (but personally I don't think a cheesy beef is EVER anything special) however she really liked it. She says she would get it again but wants to try other subs on our next visit. My son loved his Al Capone. He said he wished he orderd two; one to take home for a snack later. He particularly liked that it had pepperoni and olives on it. He said it reminded him of an Italian sub but with a pizza background (this from an eight year old!) If you are used to 5 dollar foot-longs from a different shop, these are definately different. Much better quality and taste, but we had to pay for it. Our bill came to $36.00 and some change. I was at first somewhat surprised, but when we finally were able to dig in I felt much better about the price. We will certainly go back here when we are in the area, and may actually make a special trip (about 50 miles) to try some of the other subs sometime. Although we had a long wait, and it was somewhat more money than I expected; it was understandable considering the time, day and the fact that it was seen on TV shortly before this, as well as the taste and quality of the food. I would definately recommend this place even if there's a long line again. I'm not even going to knock it down to 4 stars, because man, was that cook movin'; I don't think he could've cooked any faster without having a heart attack! read more

My husband and I went here after seeing it on T.V. The inside resembles a hot dog stand. Not too impressive. Just a few tables and chairs. We came for the sandwiches. Food is excellent! There is a huge selection of sandwiches. High quality ingredients. Friendly staff. Definitely worth the drive. read more

I love the fact that you can change any sandwich into a custom salad! I love getting the California salad with extra honey mustard dressing! I also love that they always have a variety of homemade soups, I believe up to five a day! You absolutely need to try this place! I am not a big sandwich person so I tried one of their salads. I got the one with honey glazed chicken, candied walnuts, & goat cheese and It was absolutely amazing. Delicious. We eat here pretty regularly, and the sandwiches are BIG and quite good. They load them up with meat and cheese - definitely never get shorted on ingredients. The fries are good when they're super fresh, which is most of the time. The place itself is very much a local hole in the wall, nothing exciting about it. The staff is hit or miss - never overly friendly, and I don't get the sense they remember regulars. There's one gal in particular who tends to run food and the front counter, she needs a bit of an attitude adjustment. Our favorite sandwiches - Chicken Digs, Monterey Chicken, Gobbler, Californian (?), and the Italian one (Al Capone, maybe?). They have amazing lemon chicken rice soup, too. And fries are a winner. read more

They have the best subs and salads I have ever eaten! They cook all the meat when you order so it is amazingly fresh. I have eaten many fancy salads costing $15 and up but none of them compare to their California Fusion Salad. Their garlic and honey marinated chicken is always tender and super delicious. read more

Severely over-hyped and no fault really to the shop owner. Came in expecting to get my socks blown off but no, not even close. I've had a much better sub at bubs subs off randall in algonquin. Its weird how for the most part your reputation can make a customer predetermine how much they're going to like your place. Its like if you see one star you expect for it to suck and if its 5 oh my gosh it must be awesome. Seriously just go in and try it if you like and don't worry about what others are saying. Love the Algonquin Subshop...have not had a sub that I was not happy with. I find myself craving the corn chowder soup, so I suggest ordering that when it's on special! The daily special sandwiches are also really good if you're having trouble deciding. I personally love the gobbler :) read more

Best sub shop around! Didn't know what all the rave was about until last summer and every trip I've made there since then has been fantastic. The "Al Capone" is one of my favorite's as well as many others. Even their fries and home made soups are great. Definitely recommend going here!
