This review is mainly for the facility itself. The therapist I worked with seemed fine but the facility is outdated and disgusting. And potentially dangerous. I felt like I was entering an episode of hoarders walking in there. You shouldn't feel like you need a shower after leaving a basic PT appointment. The physical therapists at Alhambra Valley Physical Therapy in Pleasant Hill, CA, are outstanding! They are experienced, knowledgeable, dedicated, compassionate, and sincerely care about their patients getting better. When I first walked into their office, I was miserable. I felt like a broken Humpty Dumpty that couldn't be put back together again. I was in incredible pain and had lost all hope that I would ever get better. Within the first 2 sessions, I was already on the mend and feeling incredible. My hope had returned. Other physical therapy establishments treat up to 3-4 patients at a time and seem to be more interested in maximizing their profits than their patient's health, recovery, and rehabilitation. That was my experience at my last physical therapy facility. When I work with the physical therapists at Alhambra Valley Physical Therapy, however, I feel that I have a one-on-one session with a totally dedicated therapist who routinely observes my behavior and continually adjusts my therapy to optimize my rehabilitation. Their facility offers physical therapy options that other physical therapy facilities do not - such as aquatic physical therapy. Their facility has also been family owned and operated since 1986 and I feel that they truly care about my recovery as they would care about a beloved family member's recovery. I will be completing my physical therapy soon and I believe that they have done the impossible. They have not only put Humpty Dumpty back together again, but it as though I was never broken or in such intense pain prior to entering their facility. I strongly recommend Alhambra Valley Physical Therapy. My sister, brother-in-law, and friend had to go to physical therapy at other facilities at the same time that I went to Alhambra Valley Physical Therapy. There was no comparison. All the physical therapists here are wonderful, and very very knowledgeable!! They are very respectful, kind and patient to their clients~ I feel totally cared for here, they are very good people!! I can't recommend them enough!! I've gotten relief here on an injury I feel I couldn't get anywhere else. The modalities they use are very helpful and support healing. First, Joan Arieta is a wonderful therapist. She is thoroughly knowledgeable, and explains things in detail. It's important to me to be part of my recovery - I don't want to be told what to do, but also why. Joan has been able to explain the pain I've had after hip replacement without ever saying don't worry your pretty little head about it. The hydro therapy pool is incredible. It has an underwater treadmill, with 4 cameras. This enables low-impact exercise following surgery, and I always feel better after my session. The different views are all displayed on a large screen TV in front of the pool, so you can watch your gait, posture, etc. This hydro therapy pool is unusual, possibly unique to this area, and it makes a BIG difference. The treadmill can accommodate slow and fast walkers, and there are water jets in the pool that offer resistance for a better workout. The rest of the equipment is what you'd expect to see in a PT facility, but the pool really sets this place apart. I also appreciate the personal attention. This is a small facility, not a PT factory. That was important to me. The staff has always been helpful, and all my appointments have been without waiting. They even accommodated me when I mistakenly came one hour early for one session. Finally, if you're on Medicare, you're probably covered, without any hassles (although you need to be referred by a doctor). read more

Things you do not want to hear while in traction: "I think the machine is broken" "Ooops, this is stuck." "Do you remember what they did last time? I've never used this before." Things that instill trust and confidence in a PT: Consistency and constant communication. Flexibility in treatment (i.e.: If it's not working, change it.) Two stars for a friendly staff who try. I don't care what a place looks like, if they are organized or even if they mess up appointment times. This review is for the level of therapy and pain reduction. The experience of shuffling therapists and routines that failed to help, without adding anything new after the initial intake. Each person I met was nice, but their work didn't help and a manager or owner could have checked in and taken more care. To be fair, I could have been more assertive in communicating that the pain actually got worse. read more

A terrific operation! My wife's aquatherapy has boosted her hope of being able to regain usage of her left side. A devastatinng stroke left her paralyzed. She has worked with two different therapists, both of whom are extremely well qualified but also very compassionate. My wife has been devastated emotionally by the stroke but has eagerly looked forward to her therapy here. read more

I will never go here again I had 6 visits authorized in December, I ONLY did 1 visit then they said my authorization expired and that they were going to get an extension on the other 5. THAT NEVER HAPPENED, they never even called me and today is January 23rd !!! The employees are lazy and just didn't get off their asses and do their jobs !!! read more

I began seeing Joan and Nolan 2 years ago for 12 weeks of Physical Therapy after a head on car crash, the other driver hit me after running a red light. After seeing 2 Chiropractors, and being told to stop, then being told to see an adult spinal specialist immediately, the spinal specialist recommended the PT. I could not find a specialist close to where I lived. I had to do my homework. I was fortunate to find Joan and Nolan. First they both wanted to work on me. I was so sore, and needed a lot of help. I underwent electrode therapy, swimming therapy which was not easy I might add, and much more. I am now back seeing seeing both of them for help as I am having flair ups. Nolan knows his stuff, the office staff remembers me, I am able to get back to back appointments including Saturdays so I don't have to lose time off work. I am very happy with this establishment and I like the assistant Johanna I hope I got her name correct. She saw that I was tired and worn out yesterday while in the "arm bike" but kept my spirits up while I wrapped it up. Thank you everyone in the office for making my PT worth while. read more

She took her time and helped explain everything in depth. 3 stars due to the fact that it takes a very long time to get appointments scheduled, as well as the front staff making it seem like you are an inconvenience to them. I had high hopes after my initial evaluation and first treatments with Joan, but it was very tough to get any continuity (or appointments) after that. The three different therapists that were assigned to me had either not done their homework or had not been briefed as I had to spend a large part of most of these subsequent visits explaining what I needed (and what they should not be doing) and making sure that they treated what I had been referred for. It was tough to do much outside of the facility because each therapist had new and (almost completely) different exercises each time that I came in. I was going to give them another chance after I used up my prescribed visits, but it seemed to be way too much of an inconvenience for the front office staff who did not bother to contact the physician for a new referral. They were most likely herding the other overbooked patients around what is, in essence, a PT FACTORY. read more

It might look easy, but you get a real workout as you move in the water, especially when the jets are turned on! In addition to the pool, the knowledgeable therapists at Alhambra Valley Physical teach you proper body mechanics, challenging exercises on their gym equipment, and a home regimen. After a good workout you can request warm or cold packs and electrical stimulation to relieve soreness, inflammation, and pain. I sent my husband there because an inflamed rotator cuff prevented him from lifting his arm. The therapist did some painless manipulations, gave him stretches, and voila, he's using his arm again! Hopefully he will avoid surgery. Even if surgery is indicated this practice would help him rehabilitate. These professionals help people with various conditions and disabilities. They use discretion and respect while helping you learn how to take care of yourself. I've been to many different PT practices to help me with long-term back problems; but this team has helped me increase my range of motion, stamina. and has reduced pain. This office only pays attention to you when you just start out with them. My experience was bad. They did not help me with my injuries at all, and my experience with them was inconsistent and annoying. The therapy room sheets looked dirty to me, so I brought my own towel to place on top of the sheets. From that day, each time, the staff would call me into the room and force me to watch how they change the sheets. Their receptionist with a crying newborn baby on one hand, once administered ultrasound treatment to me - because my nurse was "busy." Overall, the prescribed time interval for procedures was never followed. For example, I was told to use a stationary bike for 15 minutes, only to get kicked off in 4 minutes because a new patient had arrived. I guess they needed to charm a newer client... When my husband was transferred to a different room, his belongings were moved by a staff member. When my husband was done, he could not find his sweater. Staff were all busy and it took them 15 minutes to locate his sweater in a laundry room with dirty bedding. They did not apologize. I always had to wait for 10-15 minutes to get my appointment, but when I was once 15 minutes late, I was told they could not accommodate me. This is how it happened: Another week, they were overbooked, so Joan scheduled me herself two weeks in advance. I had to take time off my work for this appointment. The appointment was then cancelled upon my arrival, because the receptionist said oh, we are very busy today and will not be able to accommodate you. The receptionist did not even bother to call me ahead of time to cancel the appointment. Truly unbelievable. Overall, they did not help me and I do not recommend them. Proceed at your own risk. read more

AMAZING!!!! The entire staff is personable and friendly and VERY knowledgeable. My spinal specialist as well as my pain manager choose Alhambra Valley PT as their #1 choice for patients. After 2 spinal cord surgeries Alhambra Valley PT got me moving again using the underwater treadmill, interferential, ultrasound, and light massage. I would give it 10 stars if I could. read more

With having a work related injury since 1990 and having 7 surgeries in my right arm and 1 to my left shoulder, I've had chronic pain for 20+ years, I was sent back to PT for my left shoulder. I had been experiencing tingling, pain, and weakness and Dr Isono recommended I see a Physical Therapist. As I live in Brentwood and wanted to see someone close to home, he highly recommended Alhambra Valley Physical Therapy. I was authorized to have 12 sessions. The front desk quickly scheduled me and I started seeing Nolan. I was so amazed with the knowledge he had and how much he taught me in just a few sessions. As I've been in PT for more than 20 years, I've never experienced a more knowledgeable person than Nolan. After just a few sessions, he has helped me strengthen not only my left shoulder, but my right shoulder as well. The expertise he has shown with every appointment and explaining what I was experiencing and where it was coming from, amazed me! He has shown me numerous exercises to do while at home or at my local gym so I can continue my strengthening . When you have such a knowledgeable and professional person such as Nolan, it makes you look forward to getting help since he can answer all of your questions fully and explain in detail where the pain is coming from. The physical therapists here have really helped me! Appointments are for one hour and they sometimes even last longer, compared to 30 minutes at John Muir PT. That extra time is great because they have a small pool with a treadmill. Walking and doing exercises in the pool seemed really good for me, along with the other modalities they use (which seem similar to what I have experienced elsewhere). The place is kind of run down, but I prefer them to use their resources on patient treatment instead of remodeling! Joan gave me an ankle brace to try out, which I appreciated! Staff at the front desk are friendly and helpful. They tend to book up 2-3 weeks in advance. My only complaint is that they switch around and assigned me different therapists sometimes. On the one hand, it is good because I got different perspectives, but it was irritating to have to explain everything again. One time I got a new therapist on the last day of a 12 session referral. But if you say you want the same person, the scheduler will do that. Overall it is excellent. read more

Following knee surgery in October 2012, I chose to complete my rehab at Alhambra Valley Physical Therapy because I had been there in the past for other injuries, and had such a good healing experience. Once again, I highly recommend the team there. They create a comfortable, yet professional and encouraging atmosphere that helps clients relax and do the work they need to do to heal. I really appreciated that, especially when compared with other places where you feel like you get lost in a crowd of people and don't really get that type of personal attention. The staff at this facility are always friendly, always go the extra mile to see that you are taken care of in a timely and professional manner.
