It's been years since I got food from here. I stopped in recently because I was craving doubles and didn't want to make the drive to queens. I should've just made the drive. This was a very sorry excuse for doubles. Flat Barra, with extra oil. Not that light and fluffy texture we know and love. The flavor of both Chan a and barra was definitely lacking. Also, there seemed to be a rift between the back of the house and the front of the house. (I say this because the person serving made sure she told every customer in the line about said tension.) Overall the experience was just sad, and I was very disappointed to see such a long standing Trini spot serving up such poor quality food. Food and service always great. However there is almost always a line to get in! Keep that in mind. Doubles are great! Goat roti and chicken roti great. They also have Bussup and pumpkin! I would just recommend going early because they tend to run out of shrimp before 5pm and the line tends to get a little long. There isn't really a menu but the rotis run from I would say $9-$12, depending on what you get. I also love this spot because though I never choose to indulge, you have the option of getting pumpkin, spinach or two different types of rice in your roti. I've had a taste for a roti for the longest, so today I passed Ali's and decided to go. I usually visit them in the evening hours. Today, by far has been the worst. I ask the server for two veggie buss up($12/each which I was told was the price) and one beef buss up($18 which I was told was the price). The cashier(old short grumpy lady with glasses) proceeds to calculate my total on the calculator( not the register). First . She then tells me that my total is $45. To my dismay I'm wondering what is for $45? Ok, considering that I really wanted the food, I paid. Also, I picked up a $2 Solo drink. I then ask the cashier( old lady) for a receipt cause I like to see what I'm paying for she then proceeds to tell me she can't give me a receipt at the moment. 2nd . I go " I'm buying food for someone else and need the price for everything" se then tells me she can write the price on the bag. At this point I'm getting irritated and say "ok". I walk out of the store, not even 10 seconds pass and the bag pops ( primarily because the "cashier" shoved everything into the small flimsy bags that they give you) I immediately walk back inside and explained to the server what happened. She fixed up my food and was in the process of repacking my food into double bags. Old lady(cashier) comes out from the back and says "what happened" , I explained to her what happened she then says " you must have pelt the bag on the ground". Third. With that I was DONE!!! Get home go on UberEats, and Grubhub and check the prices veggie buss up is $11 and beef roti $13 B buss up $3 Moral of the story: Don't eat/ buy here cause they(the cashier) is rude and they overcharge you and don't give you a receipt and there is no menu so you can't see what your paying for. I've been jonesing for some authentic NY Caribbean food since the last time I visited my hometown. There are always a few things I have to get while I'm in NY. Caribbean food, White Castle, Chinese food, and pizza are always on the menu. I found this place as I do most of my restaurants, randomly perusing Yelp. This place was at the top when I typed in Caribbean restaurant so of course I had to check it out. When I first walked in the smell took over my nostrils. I could smell a little bit of everything, from curry to jerk chicken. It was a mixture of different dishes. I was so excited about the potential greatness that was before me that I didn't even realize that the line was almost out of the door. I stood in that line as anxious as a person waiting on a call from a potential job. As I got to the front I realized that it was set up so you could actually see all of the food while you order. I was intrigued by the curry duck on the menu but they were all out. My woman was upset by this and the fact that they were all out of oxtails as well so she decided not to get anything. It was early in the day so I just looked at that as a way to say that it must be good. I decided to get a curry chicken roti. A pleasant surprise was that they also had a boneless chicken option but I didn't feel it wouldn't be the same without the bones. I sat down at a table and bit into my roti like a savage who had never had a meal and to my delight it was sooooooooo good. The rate bread was hot and was very fresh and soft. I cannot decide if there was a line cause there were "so many" people or that they were on island time/ with one woman serving food and a man just prepping to-go paper bags. I got myself a boneless chicken (without the peas) option...which costs more? It came with a huge portion of roti, boneless chicken, chickpeas and potatoes in a container. I didn't think the food was that amazing..cause all the flavors were...integrated together. My friend did warn me that the one on Fulton street was better, that' the one he frequents. You know if I trek all the way from the Bx to Bk, these rotis MUST be good! My favorite is the conch. Normally conch is too chewy and I won't eat it. The way Ali's prepares it is just right! I love it! Running a close second is the curry shrimp. You can't go wrong with either of the them. The flavors/seasoning are phenomenal! The roti is always generously packed-no skimping here. When I want to fill my belly I head to Ali's. Authentic Trinidadian food made with love. I was introduced to Ali's about 7 years ago and since then I've been a faithful patron. I love the chicken roti. The curry seasoning is ridiculously tasty. It has that homemade island vibe. Like something you would smell your neighbor cooking and you just want to knock on the door to invite yourself in. It's that GOOD. The lines are long but with good reason. When you see a long line... you know the food is outstanding. I was right! I had heard of Ali's Roti shop but surprisingly as a Brooklyn native and Caribbean kid, never had a roti from there. Glad I finally tried it and worth the 15 minute wait. I love the different choices: chicken, boneless chicken, duck, goat etc. They also have a veggie option that looked really good (and I'm a die-hard meat lover). I got the boneless chicken and it was so moist and buttery. The roti tasted homemade and absolutely delicious. I had intentions of sharing but after that first bite, that quickly changed. Their Dhalpuri roti as well as their Bust-up-shot has been very close to their counter part in Trinidad on Backchain st. Their aloo pies are delicious crispy on the outside & soft on the inside, especially w/pepper & tambrin. Their phoulorie is also very good, but I honestly only order them when there's no doubles. Yum yum yum... When I first found this spot I was a vegetarian and the rotis were the greatest. The channa with the saag and curry spices makes it all good. Then I started eating chicken again and I tried their chicken curry roti. This was so good, not spicy but flavorful with many layers of taste. Especially the tamarind sauce which adds a little bit of heat and sweetness. The service is not the best but I just love the food so much that it out shines their sometimes rudeness. I believe it's just there for some sort of legality requirements, because it never works. They never call out what they're out of either. They'll have you wait on the LONG line, get to the front, place your order and then say "where out of pumpkin". AND... Will they discount your meal because they don't have one of the key ingredients? The Roti's here are good but there is ALWAYS a line. Unfortunately, It's not because the Roti is so popular but because the staff is so SLOW. The average wait time for food here is about 20mins. One time I was 4th on line with 3 people behind the counter and my wait was over 15mins before I walked out. Like I said the Roti's are GOOD but you have to decide if it is worth the wait. Rushed in here one night for my wife's roti fix.....Wow!!!! The best I've had in years. The boneless chicken roti was excellent. Juicey tender well seasoned chicken. I've been here twice in a week. I love the buss up shot. Get the beef or the goat. I've had the regular roti with boneless chicken and it really didn't do it for me. I think I just don't like the boneless chicken. I've also had the regular chicken roti with the bones and that was much better. However the buss up shot with the some pumpkin...Awww man. Ali's is hands down the best roti shop in NYC...matter of fact...it's the best roti shop on the East Coast. The first time I had Ali's was about ten years ago after the West Indian Labor Day parade. After jumping up on the Parkway, I needed fuel for my body. The boneless chicken roti from Ali's hit the spot. When I moved to Queens, I would drive all the way to Crown Heights just to get a roti from Ali's. That's how good it is. The roti skin is done just right, and everything is seasoned well. I've tried many roti spots in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx and nothing compares to Ali's. When I go to Ali's, I always get the boneless chicken roti because it saves me the time of having to pick out the bones. The shrimp looks good.
