What a great place. Let's just start with how friendly everyone there is! We came in and were greeted like family. We got biscuits and gravy-the thing we get at every breakfast place to establish a baseline-and they were fluffy biscuits with creamy sausage gravy-definitely a 5 out of 5! Perhaps the breakfast is why people have given this place such high reviews, but today we showed up at 11:30 and we were told breakfast stops at 11. Which is fine, since this is a diner and should have some good burgers and sandwiches, but we were wrong. I had the Scotty, which was okay but way too much sauce that made the bread mushy, my son's hot dog buns were semi cold, the same for my daughters cheeseburger. The fries though plentiful weren't anything to write home about...Yelp yes, but not home. :) Food took quite a while to come out, server was friendly and seemed to know many people that were in the cramped areas. I had to move to another table because the person behind me wouldn't be able to get out unless my son and I got up during our meals and let them out. Was in the area for a wedding and decided to try Alice's Restaurant based on the reviews. My only comment is that the reviews don't say enough good things! The food is fresh and amazing, the hash browns are incredible and the people- well, they made the whole experience. So friendly and helpful! This is a plain, old, nondescript restaurant with no ambience, but I enjoyed my first meal there! There are only seven tables and if you go at a busy time, you will be waiting in the tiny entranceway which is not separated from the dining area. I arrived a little before 11 AM on a weekday, which worked out perfectly: no waiting and the restaurant was almost empty. The chef was willing to prepare upon my request the preceding day's special, a Reuben sandwich, and it was excellent. I ate my wife's potato salad and it was delicious. We both loved the homemade potato soup. My wife felt that her meatball hoagie special was so-so. I sampled it and thought it was very good. Prices are fair. It was $24+ for two quite ample meals. We stopped for the night in Canonsburg PA heading to VA Beach. Woke up and were starving so we found this cute little diner just 7 tenths from our hotel. Walked in and we were warmly greeted by everyone in the place. The menu is simple for breakfast but what do you need other than good ole American Breakfast food? Well I will tell you what you need and that is Alice's Hash Browns. They aren't your run of the mill hash browns they are fresh hand cut potato's shredded into a nice crispy meaty piece of potato fried to perfection. I ordered the sausage gravy as we are from the north and gravy goes on taters of all kinds. GET THE GRAVY!! It is delicious with tons of sausage and the flavor keeps you wanting another bite. The eggs and toast were good also. Our waitress was so nice, and explained all our options. We also were talking with another guest at the table next to us. He previously helped them with the Brick of Fries! I WILL BE BACK FOR THOSE!! LOADED POTATO RIBBONS loaded with bacon cheese green onion and I can't remember everything else, but they sold 3000 pounds of potatoes at their last event. What a fantastic breakfast. We found this gem via Yelp and was a little worried when we walked in. We saw paper plates, a cash only sign, and a simple menu and was perplexed why this place had such a high rating. Then came our food came and we were blown away. My so had the kitchen sink and loved every bite of it... how he finished it is beyond me. My oldest said his French toast was the best he has ever had. The fries are simply amazing and we enjoyed them a lot! Service was friendly and prompt. Prices were decent (I wish the ATM charge was less). Overall... AWESOME! My family was in the area for a basketball tournament and attempted to go here in between basketball games. We ate here one other time when in the area and the food is great. When I walked in, the tables were full. The girl behind the counter said it would be a while. I walked back outside to wait till someone left. While waiting, additional people started to come. Someone asked If there was a list. I volunteered to go ask. The same girl behind the counter was extremely rude!! She loudly tells me that they do not take reservations and it is a first come first serve basis as if I was a complete idiot for asking the question. There wasn't a wait the last time and I wasn't sure how it worked. I walked out of the restaurant and will never return. The food is great but service and staff are not worth the trouble. This place feels small and almost run down but the food and service are great, for very good prices. I had the meat and cheese omelet with bacon with white bread and the hash browns, accompanied by a fine cup of diner coffee, but the conversations I hear coming from the back is my favorite part, at one point the topic of skiing came up, one of the ladies said "I would love to try skiing someday" then the other rebuttals "I'd rather sit and drink by the fire, too cold for me". I was not sure what to expect with this place. When I walked it is was tight and not a lot of room to get around, it was very busy not sure if this is normal for around 1130. I came here to try the breakfast but sadly breakfast stops at 11. I ended up just having a hot dog with cheese fries and I was impressed with the quality of meat and the bun was toasted perfectly. The fries where great and seemed fresh cut and the cheese was a perfect amount I even had a little left over to dip my hot dog in! I will definitely be back to try the breakfast! read more

I stopped here for a breakfast date with my cousin over the weekend after hearing alot of great reviews from friends who live in the area. We walked into Alice's and it was a small but quaint restaurant. Less than 10 tables and it was busy but we found a spot in the back corner. Everything was very clean and organized. Our waitress, who never introduced herself, made it obvious that she didnt want to be there and wasnt friendly at all. She took our drink order, food order and delivered the check without so much as a hello or smile the entire time. Never checked on us either, so I took off a star due to her bad customer service. Now the food, it was fantastic. We both had eggs overeasy with toast which were made perfectly. I added hash browns which came in a massive pile. Love love love the breakfasts here! They are consistently excellent in quality, portion size and speed of service even on their busiest of Sunday brunches. They serve what have to be the 'best' pancakes in the area. So light and fluffy with the right Amount of crisp on the edges. One hardly needs syrup they are that good! The sausage is really a perfect breakfast blend of spices. I love the attentive Nature of the service staff and the prices are fair and reasonable. As far as diners go in this area, Alice's is top notch. You would be hard pressed to find a better place for breakfast in Canonsburg, PA. Something as simple as a western omelette with hash browns is so well done and delicious here, and the service is always very attentive and friendly. You never have to ask for a refill on your coffee or soda. It's a small restaurant and can get fairly overcrowded on weekends, but it's run well and they keep people moving in and out at a good speed, without making you feel like they're rushing you. They don't. I've never had a bad meal here. It's delicious and special every time, and the staff has a great work ethic that speaks volumes every dining experience. It's always completely packed when you walk in, it is pretty small, but people are always there because it is SO good!! I love the steak and cheddar wrap, and all of the omelets are killer too. I know it's strange given a diner a four star review but I happen to love breakfast and they had an awesome breakfast. We were headed to IHOP for pancakes and my 13-year-old kept telling me that chain restaurants are just no good so on a whim I found Alice's diner on yelp and thought let's give it a try. It was so good. The pancakes were exceptional big and fluffy just like you'd want them. Really all we had besides pancakes were eggs, sausage, some bacon, toast and home fries but it came out so fast and so warm. The one thing that I love is when I ask for lemon in my water the waitress actually brought me out several pieces of nice big, juicy lemon that alone in my book will get your four stars. My only complaint is I love home fries done in a skillet and these ones were deep fried they were still really good but not as healthy as maybe a panfried version would be. Also real butter is a necessity for any breakfast. read more
