Good Food and good service. When I visit Pittsburgh, I always come here multiple times. They have an extensive menu. I recommend the Central Chicken Sandwich and the Greek Salad. The french fries use to be better but are still ok. I recommend substituting and getting the sweet potato fries these days. The restaurant is very lively. Lots of families, depending on the time of day. Service has almost always been good, even when they are busy. I'm pretty sure the owner (& or manager) walks around to check on how things are going. Places, a large, modern, Family restaurant with the thriving business. Prices are intermediate at Best or high for diner food. Bread is good, Services prompt. Food is typically at least average, was the glaring exception of how they prepare their breakfast meats been there twice, and each time receive bacon that could only have been warmed up in the chef's hands. It could not have hit any hotter surface for more than a few seconds. Forgive me for being particular, but I don't want to eat raw meat in the parasites that they contain. It will be a long time before I'm willing to come back to this place. There are far too many local establishments that are more reliable and just care more. I liked the hometown charm of the place, and the servers were experienced and attentive. The food, though, was utterly forgettable. The "home fries" were a bland cross between scalloped and mashed potatoes. The avocado toast came with a pile of raw greens on the side without any dressing whatsoever, and the avocado didn't have any seasoning or topping. Not bad for a diner with a small bar. I had a beer while I waited for my food and another when I was eating. The waitress was polite but didn't say much. The hostess, while on down time because no one was at her stand, would wait by the nearby kitchen looking at her phone or talking to the waitresses waiting for their food. A lot. The food wasn't bad. I had two eggs over medium, sausage, home fries and Italian toast. My breakfast was good, I wasn't blown away but it was good. Restaurant is clean, menu is huge. I can only give this place a 3/5. I have heard great things and wanted to give it a try for breakfast. My mother and I went around 10:30 on a Wednesday. We were greeted warmly and sat right away. Our server Sunni was quick, efficient and knew the menu well. She recommended the skillet as one of her favorites. My mother and I both ordered the Western Skillets. I was underwhelmed. It was very under cooked in my opinion. I asked for my eggs well done. They were not. The onion were close to raw and well as the hash browns. My mother's was the same way. It seems that all the ingredients are cooked ahead of time and then assembled onto our plates. I say this because our meals came out in under 10 minutes. It was also not seasoned at all. A group of former retired co-workers meeting up for a get together. She didn't mind that we sat at her table a little longer than we probably should have. Most recently, I had the western omelet and it was delicious--perfectly cooked and full of flavor. They even loaded us up on lemons for our water, which was top notch and such a nice touch. During a recent trip to Pittsburgh, my friends and I wanted to find a good local place for brunch, where we could also order cocktails. We were shocked that our local friends were struggling to suggest a restaurant. After a long Yelp search, we found Central Diner & Grille. When we arrived around 9:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning, on a Steeler's home game day, the restaurant was packed. The wait went quickly and we were seated in a large, comfortable booth. We checked out the specials board before placing orders. I ordered a fried chicken sandwich while my friends ordered pancakes and a gyro omelet. My sandwich was homemade and fresh. My friends all enjoyed their food as well. Everything was scratch made and super delicious. It was all made better by our cocktails. Mine was a peach Bellini which was sweet and delicious. All of this, on top of the friendly, patient and prompt service made the experience outstanding. I will definitely return to Central Diner & Grille during future trips to Pittsburgh. read more

A nice alternative to the chain restaurants in a crowded area. Food (4/5): The portions are really large here. I came in on a Saturday and ordered the prime rib (served on the weekends). I ordered the steak medium which was probably a mistake. It came out made to order. They didn't list the portion size but I would say it was well over 16oz. The side salad that came with it was a good size, nothing special though. Service (3/5): My server was friendly and prompt. However, he never stopped at the table. As soon as his feet got to the table he would start to back away to make his way to another table. This is a busy place. That said, taking an additional 5 seconds to at least make eye contact would have been nice. Price (3/5): This is not a greasy spoon diner where the portions are large and the price is low. You get a lot of food here but you pay for it. The prime rib dinner was $35+ and with only one side besides a soup or salad, that's pricey. Kids meals start at $9.95 and go up from there. I was pleasantly surprised by the expansive menu and the quality of the food here. Im apprehensive when places have such a wide selection, but what they are putting out is excellent. The French onion soup was flavorful and comforting, salad was fresh, and the chicken piccata was all that it should be. Came here with my sisters for a birthday celebration and was pleasantly surprised to see the parking lot packed, for starters. I just moved to the area and we were looking for a non-chain restaurant which is hard to come by in the Robinson area. Besides, I adore diners. My sisters got shrimp dishes which they enjoyed and I got the roast beef which was a huge serving. Service was excellent. If you're looking for a brunch spot in Pittsburgh, look no further, Central Diner and Grille has everything you could want for brunch and more. For short, the CDG is a busy weekend spot and sometimes the wait can be over an hour. TIP1: Make sure that all of your party are in attendance, or you will not be seated. The many circular tables in the dining room can accommodate large groups of up to 8 which is fantastic as no tables need to be combined to seat everyone. If your group is smaller, there are smaller tables and booths. While I am not a fan of big menus, CDG, has a big menu, there are a lot of options, and you will need to read and review the menu to find what you're looking for to eat for brunch. There are no straight-out vegan options, so most items need to be veganized for vegans. I chose the Grilled Panini with Vegetables minus the pesto and mozzarella. TIP2: Our server and the kitchen team did not have any issues with the bevy of substitutions and add-ons from our table including the late request for grape jelly. My Grilled Panini with Vegetables was good but needed a sauce as it was dry. CDG did not have any salsa or spicy sauce that was vegan as per my request but they did have Frank's Red Hot on the table. The pancakes are about the same size as a tire on a Tesla. They are simply gigantic, Godzilla-sized. The Waffles were large as well. The Eggs Benedict with the sauce on the side and the hash browns were well done was made to order and the diner did enjoy his breakfast. Hurray!
