Earlier in the week, we added our names (four of us) to the wait list. We heard late the evening before that there was a late cancellation and we were in! We showed up 15 minutes before departure and were issued paddles and given a quick lesson on how to use them. We were lucky that the weather was perfect and the paddling was not difficult (and we were told we could take a break whenever we wanted/needed to). We had 2 boats of 4 and had the BEST TIME. We made our reservation about 2 weeks in advance. They can fill up quickly. The price was fair. We did give a tip to the 4 men who took us on the boat. They were great and so fun to be with. We talked a ton (especially Jamie LOL) and HIGHLY RECOMMEND to do this as an excursion. My husband and I had an amazing time with Ali'i Maui OC previously, so when we came back to Maui this year, we knew we had to book an excursion again. Both trips were so much fun, learning about the area, the culture, and seeing a lot of sea life. This time, we took off by the Westin KOR Villas North at 8AM. We were able to canoe around Black Rock and even saw monk seals! You don't need any experience, but just make sure you pay attention to the instructions before you head out and while you're in the canoe. The important thing is to stay in sync with them as you paddle. The staff are all so friendly, fun, and knowledgeable. The owners, Jamie and Jeni, are wonderful. Jeni even took video and photos of us taking off which was a nice surprise. You really don't need to bring much with you, just please be on time so that you can take off when you're supposed to and not hold up other guests. read more

My family and I have gone out with these guys twice, and both times we were very pleased with our experience. The first time, they took us out to lay some of my mom's ashes to rest in the ocean, and they could not have been more lovely about it. I won't go into the details, but we really felt like they honored my mom, even though they had never met her. I was really touched by their kindness. This last time we put some flowers in the water for her, and once again they were so kind and indulgent of us. Highly recommended if you have a loved one you'd like to honor in this way. When checking in , everyone was very friendly and receptive . We met the crew for our outrigger excursion . Zeus and Asher were both friendly , professional and informative . We got to know them very well because me and Mo were the only 2 people in the outrigger . We got good historical info as well facts about the neighboring Islands . In between all that we got to see Honu (sea turtles) . Now as far as the paddling...it was easy because of their instruction prior to launching and then there coaching as far as cadence during the excursion . Our family of 4 had an awesome time with Isaiah and Fahi (I'm guessing on spelling for both). Guides did their best to have fun with each other - joking and splashing during the ride with other canoes. No mention of the cultural aspects of Outrigger Canoes in the Hawaiian history. We have done this activity before and loved it - but the experience if definitely decided by the guides and we got a live one. All 3 canoes stupidly guided their canoes amidst snorklers and then screamed at the snorklers to move. Why? Rude? Destination of the canoes is easily walkable so the view was not special. No special critters to marvel over - just guides who were more interested in their own fun and laughs at the expense of paying customers and snorklers who were in the area. read more

The best family activity in Maui . Their location is great and there is easy parking either at the Westin or at Kahekili Beach Park. If you park at Kahekili just walk towards the boardwalk then head towards Dukes restaurant. It's way before dukes but I'm just using that as a point of reference. It's a couple mile paddle towards black rock and back . You have time to dip in for a swim or swim to black rock to jump off . Make sure your wearing water shoes if your jumping off . It's our 3rd time with them and have a great time every time . Highly recommend. read more

I had an amazing time on this tour. Uncle Jamie was obviously experienced and made us feel completely comfortable in his care. And trust me that's a big deal for me since I can't swim and being in open water was a concern for me before getting on the canoe. But after meeting Uncle Jamie and getting started on the canoe I felt totally safe and comfortable. While the sun was blazing the views we saw while in the water were absolutely gorgeous. I'm sure you could get a similar view if you did a boat tour but there was something great about paddling yourself. And Uncle Jamie was sure to share a wealth of Hawaiian history which made the experience even more meaningful then just hoping onto a boat. There really isn't anything that can beat breathtaking views, some cultural history, good company, and the adventure of doing something you've never done before. It was a once in a life time experience and even I (who can't swim) felt comfortable enough to strap on a life vest and hop into the water. I don't think I'll ever be able to be that far out into open water again (not without fearing for my life). If you want to learn how to paddle a canoe, see the island from a completely different perspective, and maybe even get a crash course in swimming make sure to look for Uncle Jamie. Awesome experience! From the moment we approached the meeting point we felt like we were part of the family. The guys quickly introduced themselves and with self depreciating jokes set about making us comfortable and excited to get out on the water. It is evident through the care they take with preparing the canoe and equipment that they are not only knowledgable and proficient, but they also care and respect the tradition and sport. We hit the water in one of the newer carbon fiber canoes top of the line and state of the art in the racing world. These guys were AWESOME! My family of 7 all had a blast when we visited Maui last month. They were so patient with my elderly mom who has dementia and my teenage daughter who has autism...they even let my daughter lead one of the canoes we rented!
