I got a quote to put some new mufflers on my car from Larry. He charged me the same price as I could have purchased a whole new catback exhaust. I figured for the price he was charging he would do good work. After he was done I inspected the job. Besides the subpar welds, I noticed he didn't even cutout the rusted exhaust next to the muffler that had a whole in it. I showed Larry the gaping hole next to the muffler that was impossible to miss and he looked annoyed and said that would cost me extra. Like seriously you wouldn't even have said anything unless I brought it up? Shady dude for sure. Way to expensive, quality of work lacking, and zero pride. I brought my 72 Jaguar xj6 conversion to this guy. What happened is this car which I bought is a V 8 conversion and it only had 2 mufflers. So I need to add more mufflers to quiet it down. He recommended me to add 2 more mufflers to guiet it down. Guess what? He quoted me $890 to add mufflers!!!! I immediately rejected his offer and went to Golden Auto Brake and Muffler service in San Francisco and they quoted me only $240 for the entire job. So Golden Auto did it for me while I waited. Now my car got 2 more mufflers and Golden Auto did a great jobh. So think about this guys. This guys asked for $890 and Golden Auto of Ssn Francisco did the same job for me for just $240.; Is this guy over charging me? You be the judge. All I can say is when I went to Pacifica Muffler and Volvo repair shot, it was completely empty. There are no cars there for him to repair. Then he quoted me this whopping $890 repair cost for just 2 mufflers. I guess that's the way how he operates. I decided to try this place out for my 2006 Volvo V50's 37, 500 mile scheduled maintenance, mainly because its just down the street from where I live. I got a quote of $110 from a guy on the phone the day before I took it in and I had my wife drop it off after she took me to work. When she dropped it off they gave her an estimate of $110. About an hour later they called her at home and told her that it would be $220 because she needed some "fluids". So my wife called me and I called them and asked what it needs. They put me on hold for a few minutes and told me that they just recommended some fluids to my wife. So the price was back down to $110. I went to pick it up after work and ended up paying about $180 because my wife asked them to rotate our tires. The most expensive tire rotation ever. I dont even know if he put synthetic oil in like Volvo recommends. I don't know ifhe's ever worked on a Volvo from this decade. The customer service wasn't that great. The owner was talking to some guy who wasn't even picking up a vehicle. If I remember right they were talking about their new computers. He totally ignored me for like 5 minutes. Didn't even acknowledge my presence. I had to wait for the other guy to leave before he pretended to just notice I was standing 3 feet away from him on the other side of the counter. I don't know why this place has "Volvo" in their name. My car was the only Volvo there - in the shop and in the lot, including all the photos of cars on the wall in the office. Seemed like a muscle/race car place. Their prices are cheaper than most, but I don't know if I want to take my car there again. If I do, it will only be because its so close to home, or if I'm tight on cash at the time. read more

Larry is local. I like to keep my business local as much as possible and Larry and the people at Pacifica Muffler & Volvo make it easy to continue doing so. Brought my late 70's El Camino in last week after I suspected my head gasket blew. Larry told me they would check and have an answer by the end of the day. When I got back home (about 15 mins) I got a call from the shop saying they performed a chemical check on my radiator fluid and it tested positive for exhaust gases. I immediately gave a green light for the open heart surgery on my motor to begin. A day or so later, another call from the shop was about my poorly seating valves and a cracked cylinder head. I was lucky that someone down at the shop had a spare set of cylinder heads and they brought them down for my car for NO CHARGE! The car was done in under a week for the head gasket, cylinder heads, and some valve machine shop work. I was out of town for picking it up but Larry had no problem keeping it over the weekend. Monday morning I paid up and he even showed me how my old valves didn't sit flush in the old heads. Above and beyond the old shop I used while in college for a similar job. Quick turn around and great customer service. I trust this place with my classic car. read more

Great service. Larry (the owner, I think) was very honest and knowledgable. He charged me far less than what I had been paying in SF for the same service, he gave me several updates throughout the day, and he did a tune-up, replaced a tire, fixed my gas cap, and had everything done the same day. I had flowmaster super 44's mufflers installed on my 2013 Challenger and he did a great job. The welds look good and he had it up on the rack for me when I picked it up so I could see the work. Larry also picked me up from my house when it was ready. I also had my sons Jetta worked on and he also did a good job. He replaced the water pump and did an oil change. read more

My wife recently brought her Volvo S60R into Larry for a simple engine light check. He had the car in his shop for over 6 hours. When she finally went to pick it up he charged $270 for troubleshooting the light. This involved plugging the car into his machine and reading two codes which took at most 5 minutes. I later read the codes on my own machine and only one of them matched the codes he said he got. He then wanted to charge us to replace two parts which would have cost $1200. To fix the car I only had to replace the one part that related to the one code I got. This completely solved the problem and cost less than $90. Larry wanted to charge us a lot of money for unnecessary parts and work. We tried to call him to resolve the matter but he would not return our calls. He says he can charge whatever he wants even $270 for 5 minutes. While waiting in line in his office, I have also noticed that most of his customers seem to be women and I've heard him charging them way too much them for simple services also. Our long term mechanic is at Daly City Auto Repair. Check out their reviews. I learned it's worth a little longer drive than having to deal with someone like Larry. read more

Time back ten years (no idea if ownership has changed). My mother needed her mustang serviced. Nothing other then normal service calls. Got quoted for $600... Dropped off the car. NO calls to pick up the car (which lets the shop give the impression to the customer that they have been working on the car the whole time, and then charge fees the whole time). Then get the call we need to have "spark plug cables changed ". Ends up that the $600 tune up " had changed to $2300. My mother paid. But granted, it might have happened 10 years ago... Go elsewhere. They take advantage of those who know not better and are dependent on getting to where they have to. (to the shop, I have documents) (be aware of the "unknown" users with 5 star ratings whom are trying to counter the registered users with negative ratings.. It speaks volumes) read more

I took our '95 Volvo wagon to Larry when I noticed that oil was smoking on the engine block. He diagnosed the problem and quoted what seemed like a fair price to correct it. He also quoted a very fair price for some optional work on another vehicle. Circumstances changed so that neither work will be done, and he remained affable and very helpful throughout. Took my car here and had my brake pads replaced 3 times in 2 years. Replaced my rotors within a year and a half of buying them. Asked for two brake inspections, and they said they were perfect, and some cars just eat up brakes. Took my car to another mechanic, and they said my right rear caliper was completely frozen and my other brakes were being worn down from sharing the load. Also, they said I needed a new air conditioning band. They didn't fasten it correctly, and it slipped off the block. When I asked them to fix it they reused the same band (now warped) so now it screeches when I turn. read more

I first started to bring my vehicles to this shop after a few of my friends had told me that this was their shop. The owner, Larry, is friendly and willing to share a few stories if you are in the mood to socialize. His prices are about what the other shops around Pacifica are charging and he always backs up his repairs. The reason I am writing this review is that 2 times, my repairs were SIMPLE for him but baffled me. He could very easily have charged me for the small amount of time it took him to fix my problems. Then we called them back to see how much it would cost to install a new thermastat for coolant. Took until next day for them to call back and said it would be $376.00. I have been going to Larry for several years now and happy to say I have been very happy with him. He used to service my wife's old Jeep Liberty which we have since sold and now services her newish Subara Outback and my late model Chevy Impala. We have never had a problem getting a prompt appointment and the work was always completed quickly along with good communications about the work. The last review had me scratching my head wondering if he was referring to a different Pac. Muffler than the one that I know. I lived in SF for years and tried dozens of shops with minimal satisfaction. The Pac Muffler that I know goes out of their way to accommodate my work and life schedule. (They've stayed open as late as 8:00pm when I got stuck in a meeting.) They have always gone the extra mile in regards to customer service, communication and quality of work. I recently brought my 1979 Volvo here for my muffler, I wanted to support my local businesses seeing how we live here. My husband had crawled under my car so I knew where the problem was. The muffler guy put my car on the lift to take a look, he told me what I already knew about the pipe being disconnected at the bracket.He also told me there was "a big hole" and he would have to replace the whole system for $300! He said he would order the parts and I could come back in a couple of days, which after I thought better of I did not do. After listening to my tale, my friend recommended "Discount Muffler" in SF, they were great. The gentleman there put my car on the lift, inspected it and told they could wield the pipe at the bracket, $40! I asked him about the hole, he said "What hole?" I pointed to wear the other muffler guy said there was a hole and he shook his head no saying there was in fact no hole. DO NOT take your car to this crook, he's dishonest and thought he saw easy money when I rolled in with my old, loud car. My car now purrs like a kitten after taking her to the HONEST muffler guy in SF. Shame on you Pacifica Muffler for trying to screw over the locals! read more

My trusty Volvo was stalling in the middle of traffic, so I called Pacifica Volvo & Muffler to see if they could diagnose the problem while I waited. "Sure," they said. "Bring it in at 1:00." So there I was at 1:00. My car disappeared into the service bay, and I took a seat in the office. I'd brought a magazine to read. 1:30. 1:45. I asked the receptionist if she could check on the progress. She ventured out to the service bay and returned with the information, "They're working on it." 2:00. 2:15. I got up and wandered into the service bay. There's my car. The shop owner and another mechanic are bent over the engine, attaching wires to things. Looks complicated. "How're we doing?" I asked as I sauntered up to them. "What's your problem!?!" demanded the shop owner. "Just wondering how we're doing," I answered, taken aback. "That's it!" Ripping the his test wires out of the engine. "Take your car and go!" Okay, this really isn't an exaggeration. I was not aggressive or rude, not even a little -- actually, I was grateful that he'd been willing to help on such short notice. But the guy just flew off the handle. I tried to defuse the situation, but he wasn't buying it. He hopped into my car, backed it out of the service bay, and parked it in the driveway. Wow. Pretty disturbing experience. But this story has an interesting coda. Later that afternoon, I took the car to my regular shop, Professional Auto Care in HMB, which necessitated a 25-minute drive each way that I'd been trying to avoid. From the time I got there, it took Kim ten minutes to drive the car into his shop, diagnose the problem, and return to tell me. (A faulty "air-mass meter," which subsequently cost several hundred dollars to replace.) So what went wrong at Pacifica Volvo? Was the guy incompetent? Was he out there for an hour, trying unsuccessfully to figure out what was wrong with my car? When I asked how he was doing, did I provide him with a much-needed excuse to throw in the towel? I do not know. But I ain't never, ever going back there again! read more

I wish I could say something nice but I just can't after our last dealings with Larry. Brought my 73 Camaro in for an alignment and after picking it up on a Friday went blasting up over Sharp Park road to get my son in Millbrae. Came back on the highway and all seemed fine, with the exception that he didn't give the car the alignment specs I'd asked for, at least according to the print out he gave me. Next morning I crawl under the car to check things out, (do you do that after getting work done?) and I find three cotter pins missing from my steering linkage! One each on the tie rods and one gone on the center link. One of the castle nuts was already loose. If just one castle nut had come off, I would have lost the ability to steer and certainly crashed. So now I'm pissed and don't trust his work and need to check everything. I jack it up to remove the wheels and find he's cross threaded a lug nut onto it's wheel stud - and won't come off. He obviously drove it on with an air tool instead of hand starting it. I end up snapping off the stud to remove the wheel, remove the hub myself, have a new stud pressed in, and reassemble it all myself - why? Because I obviously can't trust Larry! (And also I know how to do that stuff) I call and leave a message Monday morning - and I was very polite. That afternoon his office secretary calls me and apologizes profusely. She clearly understands the severity of the situation, that if the castle nut fell out, we could have died, like Jerry Titus did. She said Larry would call me the next day. Next day comes and he does call and leaves a message. Here's what he said: "I guess all you want to do is hear me own up to the cotter pin situation, and that's what I'm doing." "The lug nut deal, I'm not owning up to that, cause that's just, a 30 year old car, who knows what ya got going on there, if you got enough lug nuts sticking out of the wheel to start with, but they screwed on, they worked for me." "Anyways, if you want to call me back and hear me own up to the cotter pins, go ahead, I'll be here, otherwise I'll talk to you later, bye." That's exactly what he said to my voice mail. is there an apology there? If so, I can't find it. Larry is extremely expensive for shoddy quality work and a poor customer service approach. Also, if you have a Volvo, don't bring him one if it has a computer, as he doesn't know how to work on new ones read more

Don't go here! I brought my car in to get the brakes checked, and they told me they had to replaces the rotors and pads on both the front and back brakes, said they would charge me about $700. I then took it to my dad's mechanic and he said my brake pads were more than 50% there, nothing needed to be fixed. And I paid 30 bucks for Pacifica Volvo and Muffler to tell me a lie! All I can say is, you can change the name, you can move, you can paint the building, but the results will be the same, not good. I ignored multiple warnings because I wanted to support a local business and they were convenient. I seriously thought about taking them to small claims court due to having an expensive and unnecessary repair done to my car, decided not to waste more of my time dealing with this situation. Everyone makes mistakes, but I ended up paying for the labor to install and the cost of a very expensive fuel pump I didn't need when all that was wrong was a bad sensor and the car was out of gas. I have the documentation to prove my claim. I wonder what he did with my working pump? To top all this terrible service off, because of my HONEST Yelp review I was told I am not welcome there anymore, as if I would ever go back! read more

I have not been in this place for years, but prior to that it is where my dad brought all of our family cars and I have always wanted to say that I consistently felt like my dad, who knew about as much about cars as he did about astrophysics, was getting taken to the cleaners every time he walked in the door. My main problem is that EVERY time we brought the cars in for ANYTHING, they would ALWAYS end up having something else wrong with them, something else which, ironically, was always considerably more expensive than the original issue. For example, when I was in high school the transmission got stuck in neutral in a parking lot. It turns out that this was a common problem with that volvo (the neutral safety switch), so obviously we took it in. Well, this same thing seemed to happen every six months after that, and every single time it cost us something like a grand to fix. It was ridiculous. It's possible that particular car was just a lemon (it was), but we had other cars that all seemed to have these same repeats of issues, and my dad dutifully take them to Pacifica Muffler. I always felt like we were one step away from being told that we had to have our jupiter belts changed. The service here is not particularly good or friendly, and I totally agree with other comments that they don't really understand the important of promptly acknowledging a customer. When my dad passed away, my sister and I agreed that we would never go to these guys again, and we don't. I doubt they miss our business because they should have been able to purchase a golf course with the sheer volume of treasure we handed to them over the years. On the brighter side, I will say that they kept my car working (to a degree). read more

Larry treated me great!. My 2002 v70 died at the tunnel on the day after Christmas. Had to be towed to Larry's without even talking with him because of the holiday weekend. He looked at the car on Monday and determined the throttle body electronic fuel system was bad. He and I worked together by phone, and sent the part to Canada, FedEX, and it was back on New Year's Eve. He got it in and I picked the car up on Monday. Very happy with his service. I have been a customer at Pacifica Muffler and Volvo for several years. However, in the past two years, I found that the price quoted didn't match the bill. I recently took my car in to change the alternator. I was told that a refurbished alternator would be put in. I checked with a couple of other shops to get an idea of price, the highest quote was $200. The cost of the alternator at Pacifica Muffler came to $ 377 .. I feel ripped off ... Well, color me gone. I've been bringing my volvo here for 8 years. Spent a serious amount of money every time but felt that it was worth investing in my car. Lat month my key got stuck in the ignition - crazy! - so I brought it in. Asked for the scheduled service while he had it. I get a call that the brakes need replacing, too, so I say go ahead. $2400 later, I pick up the car and drive home. By the next day I notice oil leaking under the car -- from about 5-6 spots. I can't bring it back in because of an out of town work trip, so I tell him we'll get together when I get back in town. Fast forward, I bring the car in and he has no idea what the problem is, but he replaced a fuel filter ring. Car comes home, and continues to leak. by now I've added a quart of oil (and there's a quart on my carport). Bring it in and here's the outcome: "FOUND OIL BREATHER HOSE @ VALVE COVER LEAKING, RESECURE HOSE AND CLAMP". Whaaat? Sorry, This doesn't pass the smell test. Something happened when they did the service - either putting in the wrong filter or leaving something loose or knocking this hose off or ??. But no one can admit a simple human error. This is all coincidence? Yeah right. REVIEW: stuck key turns into $2400 service turns into new oil leak turns into another $368. I hope that last bill gets put to something really memorable, because this customer of 8 years is done and gone. read more
