After missing out on the most well known vegan spot in Pittsburgh due to the days of the week we were in town, I wanted to hit this spot. It seems too far for most people staying in downtown but it just so happens that we were on a road trip and therefore....had a car. Less than 10 min from downtown was all it took. No seating inside actually which gave me an excuse to wolf this shit down in the comfort of our rental car. Breakfast sandwiches were a given but I was struck by the adorable and enticing pastries and breads on display. There were a number of appealing contestants for my sandwich but the ubiquitous presence of my arch nemesis onions made it slightly challenging. We had spent the preceding few days in Cleveland and then Pittsburgh and while sauerkraut has a lot of nutritional benefits, it is somewhat lacking in protein so I felt comfortable with the "breakfast" with chickpea tofu egg scramble, roasted tomato mayo, vegan sausage and pickles on a nice, juicy bun. I admire the chickpea tofu egg it was a very nice replica for eggs. The sausage patty was gigantic and that mayo was so good. GF ordered the seitan melt with sauerkraut, red onion, oat cheese, pickles, toum, and roasted tomatoes. I tried some of the seitan which was doused in sauce and EXCELLENT. Our road trip bread supply was dwindling so we also got one of their whole grain sourdough loaves which is fantastic and still kicking 5 days later. Paired wonderfully with soup So good read more

I was so sad when Allegro closed but so happy when they reopened in 2020. The bakery of all bakeries, yinz guys! It's a vegan shop and I'm not even vegan but it doesn't matter. The goodness that comes from their ovens is beyond compare. The ingredients they use are things like oat milk, sunflower butter, and more. Everything is handmade on a daily basis. In addition to baked goods, they offer fresh salads and sandwiches on their in-house breads. I absolutely love the chocolate rugelach, chocolate chip cookies (best ever!), blueberry muffins, chocolate croissant, French batard bread, and sourdough bread. Allegro Hearth Bakery sits on Murray Avenue, one of the main business places for Squirrel Hill Residents. When I lived here I hadn't gone to this place but decided to check it out now that I was a tourist. It was a good option as my wife is vegan. We had the seitan bacon melt sandwich with the oat cheese. Took about 15 minutes, so we ended up dumpster diving for records at Jerry's doing that time. I would say the sandwich was really filling and seitan well seasoned and juicy. There is fresh bread available to purchase and, it's a nice corner spot. It's a more pick up and go place. But, it was such a nice day that we ate outside. I would give 4.5 stars, but round it to 5. For vegetarians/vegans- definitely a place to check out. I think it's worth it. This is a hidden gem in squrriel hill. This is a grab-n-go bakery with no seating or tables inside. Once you walk in, you are greeted with the sweet smell of pastries and breed. We tried their seasonal hot crossed buns and rugelach. I was not a big fan of the pastries that I got since they were a bit spice heavy but that's just according to my taste. However, I would've love to try their other pastries. Their seitan melt was amazing and so well flavored but I wish their bread was a bit more toasted. Ordered pick up from this location. We ordered the seitan steak sandwich and the tofu sandwich. The seitan sandwich was a little too tomatoey for me. I really liked the freshness of the tofu sandwich. Both sandwiches used sourdough bread, the bread was soft and fresh. If I would come back I would get the tofu sandwich again. You could just ever so slightly tell it's plant based. Soft on the inside and has a nice crunch on the outside. A nice coating of sugar, and not bad. Reasonable price and portion. The chocolate chip cookie was good as well. Very large portion for the price! Tasty, rich chocolate that's not too sweet. A nice saltiness on top. Pretty good. The staff is always so friendly. They greet you with a smile and make sure you're being attended. I normally don't go for vegan spots but I decided to get the seitan melt one day and the flavor on it is so outstanding. You do have to wait 10-15 minutes because they make it fresh on demand. It was tart and sweet, tender and crisp. The crust was SO good. The flavoring and sweetness was literal perfection. The pumpkin pie was the best pumpkin pie too. Smooth and silky, perfectly spiced. I have been vegan for 9 years, and have never tasted baking like this before (for reference I live in NYC and spend a lot of time in LA). I had given up on croissants years ago, as I had never seen a plant based version until visiting Allegro Hearth. Though nothing will exactly mimic the buttery classic - the Allegro version is light, flaky and the perfect amount of chewy heft in the center, in an incredible feat of baking genius. Truly, the recipe they have developed deserves awards. It is so difficult to accomplish this kind of nuance with plant based ingredients people! I feel lucky to have experienced it. The mouthwatering showstopper, however is the cinnamon roll which is a textural extravaganza from it's two-handed size, decadent frosting, not-too-dense but still a hefty mouthful pastry, to the way the bottom layer has become gooey and caramelized in the pan. It's worth noting that I ate a croissant AND a giant cinnamon roll and did not get a stomachache which is a testament to the quality of ingredients used. I've been wanting to try this bakery for so long since I heard it was all plant based. My girlfriend and I took the day off from work and decided to come and pick up some pastries for breakfast. When I think about bakeries, Allegro is always first in my mind. When they reopened as an all vegan bakery, they showed me the possibilities of what you can do with just plants. There are baked goods here that haunt my dreams like their chocolate cake or their seasonal fruit danishes. Sometimes, I think about flying all the way from the west coast just to get a sandwich. On my most recent visit, they revived their B52 seitan shwarma special and it was absolutely delicious. The focaccia flavors here are always inventive and just taste so good. The bakers here are geniuses. I wish I had photos to share of the all the amazing treats I've eaten over the years, but something always comes over me, and the food is in my mouth before the camera can come out.
