I ordered two shrimp tacos and I honestly wish I hadn't. The shrimp was completely overcooked -- dry, rubbery, and lacking any real flavor. On top of that, the tortillas were soggy and falling apart before I could even pick them up. For something as simple as shrimp tacos, this was really disappointing. It's that time of year. There are no shortage of places I've been meaning to share. So I shall begin here. First, I had no idea these guys were related to Nick's. None. Second, I only started visiting here after Pico Paco left. I loved Pico Paco and it was but a block away and the mom and pop that ran it were swell so me being a creature of habits never ventured further. Then Pico Paco closed and I was all what now. Off here I went. And. If Pico Paco were still around I'd have to have more than one burrito a week and I would become a snowman bc La Calaca Loca so delicious that I'd have to go to both. But now I don't. All I've had are their burritos and sometimes a nacho. The burritos are super good and super generous with the fillings. What makes this always worth the visit, over and above the yummy vittles, are the folks feeding you and the folks taking care of business at the register. They can turn even the hardest frown upside down. Gracious, welcoming, pretty. Senor Guapo is outnumbered most of the time but he doesn't seem to mind. Showed up after a long dmv wait. The tacos here are a bit big. Carnitas tacos don't usually come with beans and pico de gallo but their taco placero interpretation of it was quite good. Service was friendly, rock in Spanish by mana was playing in the background. A bit of boxes hanging by the back door but it didn't take much space. The best shrimp tacos I've ever had! Crispy shrimp tacos with guacamole and mango salsa. The flavors are incredible and the taco is the size of a small sandwich. You only need two. Wow. Got takeout from here, and it really wasn't good. Like, I would have been so much happier if I'd nuked Amy's frozen burritos. Which is what I had to do for my kid, who had one bite of her taco and wasn't having it. My husband and I ate a few more bites of ours, except for the salad. I wanted to like this place. I'd seen it on Check Please and I was excited to try the food here. The pluses: the people were very nice. The ambiance is pretty cool with a Dia de Los Muertos vibe. Parking was easy. The chips were very good and they brought 3 different salsas to the table. Problems: the food was bland. No salt or pepper. No garlic or smokiness. The fish taco had little flavor and the second tortilla was unnecessary. Elote had way too much mayonnaise. The rice and pinto beans were also flavorless. La Calaca is a great taqueria tucked away in the Temescal neighborhood. They have a colorful dining space to seat about 20 - 30 people and their food is delicious! LaCalaca catered for a teacher training at work and they did a beautiful job! The food was delicious and there was plenty of it for a great price. We ordered their taco bar with two different meat choices, rice, beans, salsa, chips and all the fixings! Kevin was wonderful to work with. It was so good, I have stopped in for lunch several times. The ambience is there but the food leaves much to be desired. Very little authenticity here. While I don't mind a good Americanized Mexican meal once every blue moon, La Colaca Loca was underwhelming and overpriced for what they're offering. I've actually been here about 3 times over the years. I feel like I forget how underwhelming it is every time, so I decide to give them another try. Welp, this last visit was just as disappointing as the others. Their restaurant is located in a tiny strip mall off of Telegraph. As you can imagine, parking can be a pain and it's also pretty tight. From the outside, this place looks like a hole in the wall. However, one thing that I can say is that it's super festive and inviting inside. The interior is just as lovely as the service. The people working here were super attentive and cordial. But unfortunately, that's really all that this place has going for themselves in my opinion. I dropped by for lunch during the work week and decided to try their cheese enchiladas plate after perusing their menu. They don't really have a lunch menu, but they do have specials and specialty plates. Now mind you, this plate was about $15. If the food had actually tasted authentic and the enchiladas were filled with meat, it wouldn't really be a huge deal. But when I can get a plate like this for $10 that has much better quality and that actually comes with chips and salsa, then we kinda sorta have a lil' problem. First off, they use pinto beans instead of refried beans. I don't mind pinto beans, but these tasted like they came from a can. The rice was pretty flavorless. They loaded the enchiladas with hella cheese, but ironically it still tasted pretty bland. Also, there was so much cheese on top that I couldn't even taste the red sauce. What I also found odd is that provided tons of different salsas to use, but no complimentary chips. Chips and salsa costs $6+ here. Now, what in the hell am I going to do with 17 different salsas and no chips?! I can only put so much on the enchilada, and it's a cheese enchilada so... yeah, ain't gonna work. I learned later on that this is the sister restaurant of Nick's Crispy Tacos in SF. Not a fan of that place either, so it makes sense. Anyways, I'm glad that I gave them another try. It really just confirmed that this place isn't worth coming back for. read more

Been coming here once in a while for years for adequete, if not particuarly good, food in a nice-enough space but really upset tonight because they gave us completely the wrong order for pickup -- with meats we can't eat and much cheaper items -- and when we realized it and called them they blew off the call, answering but saying that since they were closed they couldn't do anything. I've been meaning to try this place. It's a little hidden but worth checking out. The chicken taco was really good. Shredded chicken that had been simmered in a seasoned broth with pinto beans and pico. The fish taco you can get grilled or fried and was also really good. The wet burrito we got with beef. It was just ok. The red sauce wasn't my favorite. Overall I will go again because the tacos were really good. They were also really fast. Came with some salsas but not chips. read more

I'm rather embarrassed to share the back story behind my visit here, but confession is good for the soul or so they tell me, whoever "they" may be. AA perhaps. Anyway, I was out with colleagues for libations after work. OK, cocktails. OK, Happy Hour well drinks at $3 a glass. Fortunately I just had a slight buzz, so I ended up in the familiar parking lot at Telegraph and 51st that I've passed by thousands of time. OK, hundreds. OK, dozens. My thought was that I would grab a bite at Juhu Beach Club because Anthony Bourdain had raved about it, so I wanted to see what was so special about the new wave Indian food served there. I kept staring at the overhead menu for an incredibly long time why Indian food would cross over to Mexican food. Is that where the new wave part comes in? So believe it or not, I still thought I was in Juhu Beach Club because the decor was kinda beachy (granted it was by way of Ensenada) and well, who am I to judge what fashion forward Indian-Mexican hybrid cuisine should be like? In this delusional state, I ordered a couple of things, first the $3.95 Elote, the familiar corn on the cob with crumbled queso fresco, mayo, and chili powder (photo: http://bit.ly/2vVbjkG). It was decent, kinda gloopy as the mayo struck me as overkill on that little cob. Still thinking this was Juhu because clearly corn on the cob is a stable on the beach. Besides, they have quesadillas on Indian beaches? Wow, what an adventurous chef this must be. When I looked at my receipt when I got home, it finally dawned on me that I was in the wrong place. Don't drink and drive. First time here, I've been wanting to try this place out. Glad I did, the burrito carne Asada is inconceivably juicy & flavorful. Wasn't salty or less on the meat like other places. They actually gave a good balance of all the ingredients and manage to stuffed it without it ripping. In house They got a couple sauces to go with your burrito but not many. The portion was pretty massive for me, so I got to take some home. All and I like the food, the service, and the environment. They also got some pretty cool decor in this shop however I lost the images I've taken of this place because it was on my old phone. But you should go check it out yourself. Area: The parking is small but can't expect much from this area. Atleast they got free parking in this small plaza. read more
