Spent a few days visiting the area near Slaty Fork - most of the food places are a fair drive away...fortunately Almost Heaven was there to fill the bill for some great smoked brisket! We stopped in twice during our stay ..there were a number of items unavailable (some of the sides) but I was more than happy with the choice of Brisket & Bacon-Wrapped Asparagus - ordered the same both times! The Mac & Cheese was good, too! No dine-in, but there are a few picnic tables to sit and enjoy. Prices were a tad higher than expected, but it sure was tasty - smoker is right outside! If I'm in the area again - I'll be there again! PS - had some great sauces, too! read more

From the food to the atmosphere, this place all around is fantastic! Best place to eat down the mountain, family owned and the family running it are great and fun to talk to! Just found this gem of a place at the base of Snowshoe Mountain. The pulled pork is phenomenal. It is not the preprocessed junk you found elsewhere it is smoked at their place on site. They have s good menu with lots of options but popular items can sell out. They also run cool specials. Today they had fresh smoked oysters. The food wasn't bad! I hate giving 2 star reviews for small family run businesses, especially when the food wasn't that bad, but hopefully very few people ever see this as most people don't have cell reception in the area. Me and a buddy stopped by here on the way back from staying at Snowshoe for the weekend. The young guy out front was cleaning up his smoke rig from some pioneer days festival, said he had worked hard that weekend and I believe him. He seemed pretty young to be a "pit master", but I assume he took the gig from his dad and possibly even a family tradition. We went inside to see a younger than expected girl working the counter. We looked at the board and the prices seemed a hair high, but close to a resort, not all that bad once you count that it came with sides. My buddy asked is that half a rack of ribs, as I think it was about $20. She replied no, it's a full rack. We looked at each other and both said wow, that's a great deal. Almost too good to be true.... I almost order the same thing just to have food for the ride back to NC, but I wasn't hungry yet and didn't need much so I just got 6 smoked wings for $12. My buddy was a pretty big guy and was curious about the sausages as well, so he ordered one of the game sausages, I think venison maybe and it was like $8-10. He was surprised that it didn't come with sides as the menu somewhat suggested for that price, but is what it is. His total was well over $30 with a drink. We sat outside on the picnic tables for a little bit and they came out and said that they were out of stock on his sausage, but offered my buddy 2 others instead, that seems fair. They weren't hot per se though, but taste wasn't too bad. My friend then opened his container of ribs and it was literally 3 ribs. We totally got hustled. I hope the young girl just didn't know what she was talking about when she said it was a whole rack and not a half rack, but she shouldn't have been the one taking orders if so and she shouldn't have been scared to ask if she didn't know. My wings came out and they were literally the tiniest little wings I have ever seen and at $2 a pop! The food wasn't bad, the smoke flavor and the sauces were pretty good, but we definitely felt like we got ripped off. I've been to overpriced BBQ in Asheville like Buxton Hall and even extremely overpriced BBQ in NYC like Blue Smoke and thought I got more food per $. Is what it is, but I won't be stopping there again on my next visit. FYI, at least 2 of the very few reviews on here look kind of fake, hopefully they'll get taken down. All the food we got was SO good. For meats we got brisket and pulled pork. I liked how the option to add sauce was up to you, bc that's why I often don't like bbq/smoke houses. They had a variety of sauces. My fav was the sweet chili! The potatoes salad was different than anything we've had before in a great way. There's some special taste that makes it's very yummy. I regret not getting seconds to go for our trip back home! Looking forward to when we come to eat here again. For dessert, we got the coconut creme pie. Best I've ever had, we tried to order a whole pie after that slice! Everyone here was so incredibly nice and welcoming. I felt like I was at family dinner. We even got a sample of a new menu item they're looking to release, and it was delicious. We left very happy :) and I look forward to bringing my friends back to try this place! read more

Absolutely amazing. One of the best smokehouses I've ever been too. Including Texas and Memphis. The brisket was incredible. Met the owner who was an awesome guy. I highly recommend this place if you're up in snowshoe (also incredibly reasonably priced). The server/cashier gave incredible service too. I'll 100% be back. read more

This was my second time coming here once in the off season and once on our way out after a snowboarding trip. It is definitely a place we will eat at every trip to snowshoe. My 9 year son and I took a trip to Snowshoe for a long weekend. On third night we decided to drive down the mountain to get away from the crowds and long wait at the Village restaurants and try out the smokehouse we passed on our way in. We were not disappointed! The pulled pork was amazing and the wide ranging choices of BBQ sauces were all a nice touch! The smoked Mac and cheese was great and the bacon wrapped asparagus was delicious! My only regret was not ordering three servings of the asparagus! All the other meat looked and smelled legit. On top of the amazing food, the service was great. Everyone was very friendly and treated us like we were family in for a long weekend. If you are at Snowshoe, do yourself a favor and get away from the long lines and expensive prices and take the short trip down the mountain to Almost Heaven BBQ. You will not regret it! read more

We have enjoyed eating here many times! There aren't very many choices in the area but this place is one of our favorites. The food is always great but they can sell out of the more popular items on a busy day. So it helps to call ahead to make sure they have what you are looking for. You are served on paper and plastic, not a lot or seating inside but there is more seating outside. It's just like eating at a backyard barbecue. There nothing wrong with this joint, it's family owed and ran and they make some killer food! We are looking forward to its expansion in the future. I didn't think to take any pictures of the food. I think the restaurant has potential; maybe we just went too late in the evening. A very nice young man was working and apologized for our wait ( which was not long at all). He said he was by himself. I ordered pulled chicken sandwich with slaw and macaroni and cheese. There was a very large bun sized piece of chicken skin in my sandwich. I pulled it out. After that the sandwich was good. I bit into my mac and cheese and my mouth was on fire (I'm not a fan of spicy food). The young man came out to the smoker and I asked him what was in the macaroni and cheese that was so spicy. He explained all the cheeses that went into it, one of them being jalapeño! He apologized for not telling me it was in there. I don't blame him, but that really should be put on the menu because normally that's a kid friendly food. So there went a $3 side in the trash. It would have been delicious without the jalapeño spice. So my suggestion would be to list "spicy mac & cheese" on the menu so people like me won't order it. My boyfriend ordered the brisket sandwich and he said part of it was good, and the other part was hard like jerky. He ate his mac and cheese, and enjoyed it, but he likes spicy food. We got the house sauce and we both really liked it. It was really good. There was a fire pit outside and there was a slight chill in it air, but it wasn't lit. We were staying in the area and looking for a place to pick up dinner. Based on the reviews, we weren't sure about this place. Our innkeeper recommended it, so we took the plunge. The food and service was outstanding. I had the smoked chicken which was delicious. My wife had the pulled pork which she said was the best she has ever eaten. They had a multitude of sauces available for the barbecue. As for sides, you should definitely go for the mac and cheese. They should rename it cheese and mac. It was great. We stopped by looking for something different, not just regular staple restaurant items. The owner was there and recommended the brisket. It was the best we ever had. It was very moist and flavorful. We also had the duck brat and plan to try one of the others on our next trip. The baked beans were also very flavorful-- looking forward to our next visit. Ordered dinner to go 3 hours in advance. 4 platters, 3 rib dinners and a brisket dinner. Arrived to pick up order and was informed they ran out of brisket. The brisket I paid for three hours earlier. I substituted Brats and brought our diners back to the cabin. The ribs were too tough to remove from the bone, clearly pulled from the smoker too soon. We almost drove past but thank goodness we didn't - this was the best find of the weekend! We loved it so much, that we had it for two meals and took wings to go the second time. Everything was delicious from the brisket sandwiches to the ribs to the pulled chicken to the bacon-wrapped asparagus and more. The food was great! Then why the 1 star rating? They overcharged me by almost $20.00, and when I called them on it they "promised" to refund the difference later that evening when not so busy. With hot carry out in a bag I wasn't eager to stand around any longer and told them OK... fine. Now I'm home a week later, 900 miles away, and no refund..... My fault for actually trusting their word without actually seeing an adjustment on my credit card..... not worth disputing, but worth a few words here. read more
