Açaí cravings brought us to ALO CAFE HAWAII in Waikiki! What initially piqued my interest was the name. Is this cafe related to the yoga clothing brand "alo"?? Nope! :-) We decided to check it out anyway due to the rave reviews on their coffee and customer service. It was only 1-mile away from our resort, so we walked. ALO is situated in a building which was under construction, but the business is open. The cafe itself is on the smaller side...just enough room to place your order at the counter. There is a bar with maybe 3 seats available, but it certainly got crowded once we sat down to wait for our order. Don't let this deter from trying them out! We opted for the "Happy Bowl + Drink Combo" for a 10% discount. So, we ordered a Lilikoi Bowl + Iced Americano. Wow!!! I looked at my +1 and said, "We should've ordered two!" The bowl was so refreshing, fruits were crisp, the Lilikoi base was delicious!! Not very sweet. Nice compliment for the toppings. When in Hawaii, one has to have fruit bowls! My boyfriend and I got the lilikoi bowl for breakfast and loved it. The passionfruit flavor is so tart and so real! The base has a perfect icy texture that pairs well with the fresh fruit on top. It's not too sweet at all. We sat at the bar to eat it together, and the large is definitely enough to share between two people. I enjoyed it so much. read more

Very small establishment with a counter to order plus four high top seats along the window. (Some of the photos on Yelp with arm chairs are not representative of this location). Overall the inside is super meh. More of a grab and go location. Anyway the three stars are because the açaí bowl wasn't all that great. The texture of the açaí itself was pretty icy and the flavor was strange...like it had an ever so slight after taste of mint or something herbal mixed into it which I did not like. The fruits on top were okay, but seemed less compared to other places. The almond butter was also added in clumps which made it pretty unpleasant to eat - as opposed to other places that coat the inside of the bowl or use a nozzle to evenly distribute the almond butter so it's easier to eat with the other ingredients. Anyway I'd much prefer the açaí bowls at either Honolulu coffee co or sunrise shack which are just a couple blocks away from here. read more

I was craving açaí and found this place I'd never tried before. The barista was super friendly and gave me the run down on all the different bowls. I tried the lilikoi bowl which is a bit more tart than traditional açaí and I really liked it. The fruit was super fresh and the agave syrup paired really well with the tartness of the base. They also give out free banana bread samples and repeat passes (15% or 20% off if you go again in 48 hrs). I highly recommend checking them out! read more

On my last visit, I searched high and low for an acai bowl to rival Da Cove, trying popular spots like Leahi, Lanikai Juice, and Nalu. All were just too sweet for my taste, making me wonder if they use those pre-made Costco packets. Enter Alo Cafe Waikiki, a small gem run by two lovely ladies, Aya and Christina. (There is a second location in Kakaako - I will being visiting again soon!). They even offered me samples of their delicious homemade banana bread (which I regretted not purchasing) and were happy to custom-make a mango smoothie (I would skip the smoothie next time personally, as it was nothing special?) The true highlight was their acai bowl, crafted from a homemade recipe. The texture was perfect - delightfully icy and, finally, not too sweet! We got the medium acai bowl and they kindly let us substitute cacao nibs for kiwi! It is only $1 to upgrade so I would probably recommend upgrading. The acai bowls are a little bit more expensive than other places around here but more health focused (icier blend and less sweet and smooth). Comes with lots of yummy fruits and macadamia toppings. This location of ALO is more of a takeout place, not much seating! They also have a vegan banana bread that is made without added sugar, $7/ slice. My husband got the medium açaí bowl which was good but pretty small for $15. And I got the island breeze smoothie which was $11 again pretty pricey but it is Waikiki so it's kinda expected. Fairly okay prices for the portions. They lack a lot into these. It's about $13 for a small one. The Açaí Bowl is the classic flavor, topped with bananas, blueberries, cacao nibs, granola, honey, macadamia nuts, pineapple, and strawberries. Honey can be changed to agave for no extra charge. The menu isn't huge, it has all of your basics including açaí bowl options. The staff here was friendly. She was by herself, but pretty attentive and made sure to greet us and let us know she'll get to us. We got two bowls here. The basic berry açaí bowl, and a peanut butter one. So let's rate both. The peanut butter chocolate one, while okay in small doses, was just way too much in practice. I mean, it was good for maybe the first 4 or 5 spoons of it, but then it became clear there was no chance for me to keep eating it. Just way too rich. The berry version was better and felt more refreshing. I could certainly keep eating that berry blended stuff they had in there. Felt more like a bowl of eat as a snack or smaller meal as opposed to the PB and death bowl. All in all, nice spot with some good açaí bowls. I do wish the prices were slightly lower though as these açaí bowls were certainly not cheap. Wow! What a warm, welcoming vibe upon entering this beautiful Kaka'ako location. Staff were professional and friendly. Love the plant-based, local ingredients. We ordered the Hawaiian Roll & Kale Salad and the Coconut Curry Bowl. A-MAZING flavors. The acai bowls come in small or large size, with the large being only $1 more. I still went for the small, and it was plenty big enough for lunch. It was packed generously with organic acai, granola, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, pineapple, mac nuts, raw honey, pineapple, & cacao nibs. I added homemade peanut butter, which was very yummy, but the peanut butter does overtake all other flavors in the bowl. It's probably best to order to-go as there isn't much seating. The server was super friendly and even told us to try Nalu, another acai bowl place, which I found very odd to mention their competition. We stumbled on this place right next to our hotel and it's definitely a hidden gem! There are so many acai/breakfast places to choose from in Wakiki, but ALO cafe is great! We got the lilikoi bowl, perfect for the hot Hawaii weather. The base doesn't have much lilikoi flavor but is predominantly banana, which isn't bad but not what we expected. I don't write reviews much now but I had to for this amazing place! The barista went above and beyond to offer customers free samples of their homemade banana bread and ensured one of the customers waiting for their drink that they were happy with their "splash of milk" in their coffee. The barista personally went to the customer with their coffee and creamer ready to add more until the customer was satisfied and even mentioned that they'd make it right if the customer still wasn't happy later. I ordered the tropical breeze smoothie with added vegan (!!) protein powder. Really yummy and perfect for the weather. I found the recommendation of this place on a youtube video. This place is absolutely exaggerated with its bowl, overpriced for a very basic fruit bowl in the name of acai bowl, no cleanliness inside the small shop, not even one comfortable seat to sit. But most importantly, I gave 1 star because the server was absolutely rude on one of my requests. I was simply checking to get change for 10$, I understand they could not fulfill it, but there is no need to be rude to your customers who are visitors here. It doesn't take much to be a bit grounded, you get paid because of the customers. I regret tipping them generously. :( read more

Açaí bowl was good but the experience was completely tainted due to bad customer service from the girl at the front desk. The gentleman in the back that helped make the açaí bowl was good and attentive but the girl in the front was difficult. There is a yelp checkin discount and I asked to redeem it but was told that the discount was for a different location. When I confirmed the address I was then told that it cannot be honored at this location because the owners didn't say anything about it. I was then told that they don't really use yelp. My advice to the business owner is to 1. Remove the checkin discount from yelp or 2. Better train the staff. Açaí bowl - 4/5: good flavor and textures with crunchy texture. Came here because of the good reviews but portions are very small. Almost $20 for a cup of Acai. They only fill the cup halfway with Acai and use the rest of the space for toppings. Also the Acai is veryy icy. It tastes like a watered down Acai mix. Doesn't taste like real quality Acai. Also the toppings look pretty but it's about 1 strawberry thinly slivered. By far my absolute favorite and only juice and smoothie stop on Waikiki side. Love everything they have going on in their menu and want to try more. Smoothies were definitely made from fully fresh ingredients, but took awhile because there was already a line and only one person working. She was a trooper and doing her best though.
